I give this a 1-star only because I had to give it something! What started out last spring as a great visit to this business turned not so great 10 months later. Let me begin: Last June our XMark decided to quit, right at mowing season. We reached out to Hilltop for what we thought was going to have to be a new mower. The staff kindly suggested a new motor was a better route, we did appreciate the info. We ordered the motor for $3000 and did the install ourselves. The reason we are questioning the honesty of this company, (we are now not sure this was really the true cost of the motor-read on), we also needed to order a PTO clutch. The products worked fine for the summer. Fast forward to now, I have mowed 3 times this current year, 2025, and started my 4th mowing only for the mower to completely shut down. Problem-the PTO clutch. We called Hilltop for information on returning the PTO clutch since it was only 10 months old only to be told the guarantee was only good for 30 days! What?? OK, what is the cost of a new one? Now keep in mind the old one for last year cost $270, we all know prices have increased, right? The current price for the new one is currently $212. It decreased in price? WOW! We questioned the clerk he said 'Oh yea"? What a wonderful response! DUH! How could the price be less a year later? Or perhaps maybe they overcharged us to start with? Oh, and by the way, we called the distributor of the parts company that supplies Hilltop and was told the part will be $170 from them AND there is always a 1 year warranty on these items and should have been thru Hilltop! So the supplier is backing up their where Hilltop is not. Of course the supplier is upset Now my question: Would Hilltop have taken the old clutch to return for the warranty themselves? Could we have been overcharged for the new motor? We will never know. What we do know it that we learned a valuable lesson: research before you buy from anyone! Check the internet for every supplier! Nice folks to deal with and incredible service. After 6 years, we had a bagger system installed on our Cub Cadet zero-turn. Bob (the owner), picked up our mower with his rollback, installed the bagger, changed the oil, installed a new battery, greased the zerk fittings, installed new blades, sharpened & balanced the old ones, and pressure washed it - for a total of $550 - with zero labor charge. The bagger alone listed for $800+. There's an old adage that the sales department sells the first one, the service department sells every one after. BTW, our elderly neighbor bought a Cub Cadet garden tractor from a large box store. His Kohler engine blew up (plastic oil pump gears) 2 months later. (Our Kawasaki engine has never skipped a beat.) The box store has no service/repair department so the neighbor had to remove his engine and bring it to a outside repair shop. A month + later, he re-installed it; and it promptly blew up again (bad keyway on the crankshaft). He discovered that the models sold by the box stores are not the same grade as those at the specialty shops (like Hilltop). Hilltop is THE place; we are very satisfied. read more
