This review is supplemental to my review of three years ago. It seems like I wrote that more than three years ago but Yelp said it was so and I no longer have any concept of long time. I mean on a daily basis, I am correct within 15-20 minutes of the time of day. But ask me something which happened in the past, and I am fumbling to recall if it happened five years ago or fifteen years ago. I don't know what is warping my mind but my mental time dilation is severely deficient. I wonder what will go next. They say it's the legs that go first but I seem ro be starting from the other end. Oh, anyway, this review of Maile's is more about it being a neighborhood watering hole than a Thai restaurant. My previous review was for Maile's as a restaurant, and I had to chuckle upon rereading it. In the last three? years, my friend Maris, who lives in Hawaii Kai, has invited me to join her and her other drunkard friends in going to Maile's for Happy Hour. And by hour, I mean hours. The bar at Maile's has maybe 10 seats, and while we have never had problems getting seated at the bar, it seems all the seats are occupied most of the time. Is that a temporal anomaly or a paradox? I still have not seen Maile in the flesh but from recent references made by other guys and her photo on the menu, it seems she is still a hot chick !! Maybe one of these days I will experience that vista. Anyway, the French fries are still really good, and the beef pad siew is as good as at any other Thai restaurant around town. Was recommended to try out Maile's following my scuba dive. Maile's did not disappoint! Staff were friendly and knowledgeable about menu. Very accommodating! I wanted both the curry and pad siew so I got both! The portions are huge and I had plenty of left overs to take away with me. The resturant is nestled in a shopping center. The parking is shared with other establishments but there is plenty of room for everyone. read more

Boy, we hadn't been to Maile's in 15 years! It is at the east end of Oahu in a Hawaii Kai strip mall and we find ourselves here again. That previous time, we had stopped in for lunch and they had some really good lunch specials. I remember the Thai Loco Moco had really good flavor with ground pork (instead of beef) topped with a fried egg over rice. This time for dinner, the 3 of us over ordered because we came in time for happy hour, so got a few extra appetizers. The fried calamari was extra crispy with a thai chili dipping sauce. I was really surprised by the edamame. It's not just plain salted like at Japanese restaurants. This Thai style has a heavy garlic oyster sauce that was really tasty. The sauce would be great on the jasmine rice! The green papaya salad was refreshing but the spicy was a little much, even though I asked for medium heat. For entrees, our eyes again were bigger than our stomachs because the portions are generous. The Chicken Massaman Curry was not too spicy and I love drenching the sauce over jasmine rice. We also had the Thai Fried Rice with Shrimp and the Spicy Seafood Combo. The fried rice was great and the seafood combo did start very spicy but the heat built up to a good burn. read more

Having Thai lunch in Hawaii Kai. Was recommended to try this Thai restaurant by Costco. Walking in we where greeted right away and fitted. Ambiance is classy but yet comfortable because we where dressed in shorts. Ordered the red curry with sticky rice, spring rolls and the soy cheese fun. Red curry: Tasty and mild with coconut milk. Spring rolls: Came hot with roman lettuce, cucumber, mint and sauce. Crunchy and tasty. Just enough filling. Chow fun soy: Nice flavorful with broccoli. Pros: Alot of food and tasty. Cons: Kinda pricey. For just the two of us. Three dishes and two Thai coffees. Can out about $100 include tip. Would I go back? Maybe. read more

We've been regular takeout customers at Maile's Thai Bistro and have always loved their food -- consistently flavorful and well-prepared. Unfortunately, our most recent order was completely different from what we've come to expect. We ordered the Thai lechon and the pork larb, both of which are normally excellent. This time, though, the lechon, the few pieces in the dish seemed breaded, with an oily, soft texture and almost no meat inside -- mostly fat -- and it lacked the usual sauce and flavor balance that make the dish so good. The pork larb, while looking similar, was extremely salty, watery, and missing its usual brightness and spice. It honestly tasted like a completely different recipe or chef. We're not asking for a refund -- just wanted to share this feedback in case something changed in the kitchen or preparation process. We really hope this was just an off day, because Maile's has always been one of our favorites, and we'd love to see it return to the quality we've known and enjoyed. read more

Was it our lucky day? Haven't been back to Maile's in a few years and after reading reviews was a little hesitant. However, we were pleasantly surprised to see it was exactly how we remembered it. Food and service were excellent. We ordered 5 dishes and a couple of desserts. The dishes came out quickly and were nice sized portions. We even had some leftover. Lunch for 5 well travelled ladies went quite well. As requested, our selections were spaced out well such that we enjoyed each others' stories without feeling rushed to eat while the food was hot. The Thai fishcake, pork jerky, and yellow pork curry were delicious choices, although the curry was a bit too sweet for me. The chicken larb was not seasoned well....could have used more herbs. (Donʻt be so stingy with the cabbage wedge, after all those leaves should be cut large enough to wrap at least a spoonful of the filling. 1" slices will not do! ) This is a great place for leisurely dining in Hawaii Kai Town Center. Absolutely terrible experience at Maile's. I ordered takeout and specifically requested beef loco moco because I do not eat pork. What I received was blatantly ground pork (or chicken) with chunks of spam. When I called to address the issue, the person on the phone not only refused to acknowledge the mistake but argued with me, claiming it was beef--even though it was white. Since when is beef white? She demanded that I bring it back in person so she could "inspect it," insisting the kitchen aunties swore it was beef. I explained it was too late to drive back because I have kids to put to bed, but she refused to offer any other resolution--not even allowing me to send a photo for proof. Her tone was rude, argumentative, and dismissive, making an already frustrating situation even worse. As if that wasn't bad enough, the curry I ordered was gelatinous and separated, like it had been sitting out all day. For $50, I expected decent food and at least a shred of customer service. Instead, I got disgusting food, a wrong order, and a staff that clearly doesn't care about their customers. This place has gone completely downhill, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I recently went to Mailes Thai bistro and I ordered the pad ki mao beef, house fried rice, and Thai scetta. I was a little off put by the prices but when I saw the food in person it was a lot more food then I thought. The portions can definetely serve 1-3 people per dish. The service was great from a young blonde hair guy. He was quick and easy and answered all my questions fast which is what I like. I've lived in Hawaii Kai all my life but never tried this place until recently but I will definetely be coming back!!! If you haven't tried this place I would definitely recommend especially if you are already shopping at Costco! read more

I really wanted to give Malie's Thai a higher rating because the ambiance was lovely and the service was warm and attentive. The yellow curry was absolutely phenomenal! It was probably the best I've ever had. Rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. However, I was extremely disappointed (and honestly, alarmed) to learn that items listed as "gluten-free" are cooked in a shared fryer. As someone with a serious gluten intolerance, this could have made me extremely ill. I'm very grateful I asked the server to double-check or it would've been a disaster. Cross-contact in fryers is no small issue for those of us with celiac or gluten sensitivity, and it's really important that restaurants label and handle these items with more care. If you don't have dietary restrictions, you'll probably love this place. But for anyone who needs to eat gluten-free for medical reasons please be cautious and ask questions before ordering. read more

So lucky to have this restaurant in Hawaii Kai. The chicken Penang was one of the best I've eaten on the island. Drunken noodles and shrimp phad Thai were the bomb. Wish I could eat here more often. Our family has celebrated countless birthdays and special occasions at Maile's since it opened in 2008. We've always enjoyed memorable meals paired with excellent service, and the restaurant has long held a special place in our hearts. Tonight, we ordered food from Maile to celebrate my husband's birthday--his favorite dishes at his favorite restaurant. Unfortunately, the food was noticeably off. The food was spoiled, overcooked and inedible. We tried calling the restaurant, but no one answered so drove down to return the food in person. A staff member opened the container when we explained why we were there. She opened the first container and immediately smelled the spoiled food and called the manager. While he offered to remake the items, I was already feeling unwell and declined. I requested a refund for the items we brought back. However, the manager only refunded part of the order--insisting that the returned food was edible and that I was being unreasonable. It was disappointing, especially given that he recognized us from previous visits. Sadly, we'll be looking for a new favorite restaurant. read more

It's now 1941 and was told ten more minutes and that they prioritize the people who are dining there. Loved the one at Ward center so decide to try the Hawaii Kai location. Arrived at 5pm and was seated immediately by a friendly hostess. Server came by to go through the happy hour specials. They have a full bar. Had a cocktail and calamari for appetizers and Pad kee mao and yellow curry. Everything tasted good and service was very friendly. A co-worker and I were at Ward Centre and decided to have lunch at Maile's Thai Bistro as our original choices were busy. We sat inside in a pretty empty restaurant and shared two dishes. Sizzling Basil with beef and Panang Curry with fish. I'm still on a diet so I passed on rice but ended up having two Empress gin and tonics. Some diet. The basil beef dish was very good even if the beef was somewhat tough. The flavor of the sauce and the use of stir-fried green beans made the dish excellent for us. The Panang Curry was excellent; large pieces of Basa, onions and red bell peppers in a coconut milk / peanut based sauce. As we were walking out we saw the special's board. The "to die for" stuffed chicken wings are back! We missed out! A very satisfying and tasty lunch. Recommended! read more

Hanging out in the area, we decided to stop into Maile's Thai Bistro for lunch. We were warmly greeted and seated by the bartender/hostess Jaymie. Good Thai food is hard to find here on Oahu and I'm happy to say that Maile's Bistro has some of the best Thai food on the island. We ordered and enjoyed - Chicken pad Thai Spring rolls (crispy) Thai salad Mild yellow curry Sticky rice We could not get enough of these dishes! All of the dishes were flavorful, savory and made with fresh ingredients. Beautiful views, great service and delicious food, I'm a fan! I look forward to dining here again in the future. read more

I'm from the Big Island and we don't have many Thai food options. When I was visiting O'ahu, I wanted to try some good Thai food-- Maile's did not disappoint. With local friends, we walked-in and the restaurant was quite busy, but the hostess was able to fit us in. We started off with some cocktails. The favorite of the night has to be POG martini, it was a refreshing sweet drink! For food we shared the pad siew noodles, thai chicken salad, scetta, house fried rice, and the thai short ribs. These dishes were large portions and perfect to share. The thai chicken salad is my favorite dish because it had fresh ingredients and I LOVE the egg dressing. The pad siew is better than any i've had recently, and was very flavorful. The other dishes were as expected :) I would recommend this place for casual group outings or hanging out at the bar. The service overall was good, specifically our server (tall asian gentlemen) had great recommendations and was very friendly. But, the bar/bartender got a little rowdy/loud at some points just FYI. We were too full for dessert, but will definitely be back to try again! I read some other reviews before going to this place and saw some mixed reviews. However, I would definitely encourage you all to try it yourselves! read more

Reading all the reviews from my fellow Yelpers decided check this joint out. Located in the Hawaii Kai shopping center with Costco. Had lunch with my sister and brother-in-law at Maile's Thai Bistro we ordered fried calamari which was good their chicken wings not bad and spring roll was ok . We also had pad Thai noodles it was ok as well plus my brother-in-law wanted to eat some curry. So he ordered their Pineapple curry. That was good but hardly any pineapple which was fine because I'm not to keen of pineapple inside curry. To my understanding the owner Maile has another location inside the Ward Villages . Thai cuisine in Hawaii Kai, Honolulu, Hawaii... I won a gift card from an Instagram contest and asked Peter Y. how to spend it. He recommended the Hawaii Kai location over the Ward location. He also suggested that Paul C. join in the Foodie Adventure! Okay! Maile's Thai Bistro at Hawaii Kai Towne Center is near Costco and Ross. There's lots of free shared parking and the atmosphere is casual/trendy. Reservations were easily made via Open Table online. Service was EXCELLENT. Sabrina was wearing a lei. When asked, she explained that it was her last day of employment as she was going to return home to California because she just graduated from college and landed her dream job! CONGRATULATIONS! Hawaii will surely miss you and we wish you all the best! We ordered appetizers: Calamari, crunchy Spring Rolls, and intriguing Fish Patties. Our entrees were: Panang curry, pad gra pow (stir-fried basil, beef, onions, and long beans), and pad see ew (like chow funn). I was able to eat everything (even the spicy items) with sticky rice. I recently came here with some friends when I was extended an invite and I graciously accepted. I enjoy spending my leisure time with family and good friends, especially when food is involved. It was a busy day for me running errands with my sister and BIL, and then squeezing in a hike prior to this early dinner. Located inside Hawaii Kai Town Centre near Costco, Maile Thai Bistro (MTB) has been serving Thai food since 2008 and opened its second location in Ward Village in 2017. I've heard some positive experiences from friends but never tried them until recently. It's amazing when you have friends like Auntie (aka Nadine C.) who plans ahead (reservations and transportation) and all you do is show up at the agreed time. We all arrived earlier than our reservation and soon escorted to our table after checking in with the host. Our meal started off on a good note when Sabrina, our server for the evening, introduced herself to us. She was informative, attentive, and cheerful. We took advantage of her suggestion of their HH menu (reasonable but smaller portion) and several other dishes. We also dined with Thai food expert Peter Y., who has dined at MTB previously. It didn't take long before our appetizers arrived. THE VERDICT: I was surprisingly pleased with the overall quality and presentation of the food. Here's a summary of what we ordered. HH Spring Rolls (5/5) Served with romaine lettuce, sliced cucumber, fresh mint and a ramekin of dipping sauce, the spring rolls were piping hot, just the way I like it. It was crispy and tasty. I really enjoyed eating this in a lettuce wrap with cucumber and fresh mint. HH Fried Fish Patties (4.5/5) Another appetizer that started our meal on a high note, the fish patties were infused with lemongrass. I appreciated the chopped green beans inside for that texture contrast. Not a fan of the commercialized sweet Thai chili sauce, I ate this with the vinegar sauce that complimented well. HH Fried Calamari (2/5) This dish looked promising in the Yelp photos, but it didn't make the grade with me. The calamari lacked the crispy exterior that I was looking for and one of the pieces I ate wasn't fully cooked - - the batter was still raw. I saw across Auntie and didn't have the courage to spit it out, so I swallowed it down with water. Not a fan of their calamari. Penanag Curry w/ Chicken (4.5/5) After consulting with Auntie and Peter, we felt Penang curry would be the mildest of all Thai curries. I personally enjoy spicy, but Nadine has a sensitive palate. This dish was indeed flavorful and rich. You could taste the coconut milk and peanuts/peanut butter. I also appreciated that skinless chicken breast meat was used, and it was tender. This dish paired well with my sticky rice. I only wished for this curry to have a kick. Sizzling Basil with Beef (4.5/5) This was also another memorable dish for me. I really enjoyed the flavors and texture contrast of this dish - - the Thai basil, green beans and onions. However, some of the beef lacked tenderness. Pad Siew with Shrimp (4/5) I like to order this dish as I call it "Thai Chow Funn Noodles". This dish tests the chef's skill and ability to cook with high heat, preferably a gas stove. Flavoring was good but it seems that frozen peeled white shrimps were used and the noodles didn't have the smoky flavor nor char that I was looking for. The dish is usually served with GAI LAN (Chinese broccoli) but broccoli florets were used. It was good but I've had better. The amazing service and positive energy from Sabrina left a great impression during my first experience at MTB. She was so hospitable as she followed up on us multiple occasions. We understand it was her last day as she's graduating from college and heading back to her hometown as she landed her dream job in the hotel industry. Overall, a positive first experience at MTB where I wouldn't hesitate to come back again. As a townie, the drive to Hawaii Kai may seem far but for tasty food, ambience, and great service, making your way to MTB is worth it. The restaurant had good foot traffic of dine-in and carry out so I highly recommend making reservations. read more
