Place is kind of grungy but usually places like that have the best food lol. There's absolutely no parking because it's downtown. So you gotta find a parking structure or street park and walk over. The walk will help you with hunger and help with digesting after. We've tried most of the Indian places on the island and hands down they have the BEST butter chicken and baigan baharta (egg plant dish). Update on the missed Mango Lassi - they were out of it at the time of my order on my first visit so it did not register on my order. The owner recognized me from my original review and explained what happened. (Thank you). I returned to eat a few more times and they had the mango lassi available a couple of times (delicious and thick like it should be!) I also tried the Chicken Tandoori and Lamb Biryani and for my last day in Honolulu - Lamb Vindalu once again. All the dishes were excellent, flavorful and plentiful! There was a large party already there that took most of the seating (~10) which left smaller tables near and next to the group. Service was ok, quick but hard to understand server as he spoke quietly and rushed his speaking. Ordered the Chicken Marsala, Garlic Naan Bread and another portion of Rice. This easily fed two ppl. The chicken was wonderful, a little dry as they used breast meat, full of flavor and the right amount of heat. The rice was delicious and could be eaten by itself. The amount of Chicken to a single portion of rice was a lot which is why we ordered another portion. The bread was tough but good. Not sure if it would have been better eating onsite rather than to go. It was larger than expected, but the server did say it was the size of a plate of food. Clearly we were looking at different plate sizes. Overall, the pricing was reasonable and I will go back again when I am in the area. The inside is definitely on the dingy side and vibes that say "we care more about flavor than feng shui." But once the food lands, you stop caring and start plotting your return. The Thali is the star. Fluffy rice, naan warm and perfectly chewy, and papadum so crispy it might file for crunch rights. The curries? The butter chicken was creamy and rich, the daal tasted like comfort in a ladle, and the lamb curry had the kind of depth that only happens when spices marinate for hours. Full honesty: the chicken itself leaned a little rubbery but that sauce? Enough to make you forgive and forget. You'll end up chasing every last drop with naan anyway, so who's really mad? Kamana is the kind of joint where you look around, think "did I just walk into a cafeteria?" and then get absolutely blown away by the food. Sometimes there are inconsistencies in spice level when ordering the same - we love spicy and always order spicy but sometimes it is prepared quite mild. Tonight, the Palak Paneer (our favorite dish - we always order 2 so we can each have our own) was perfection!!! We actually called to ask who the chef of the night was so we could give kudos (and only order on those nights lol), but they wouldn't give us a name. Ahhhh! Been eager to try this place so decided to come here for lunch. We were greeted and seated right away. The place is small and casual. The staff were all friendly and always checked up on us throughout the meal. The food here was perfectly seasoned. However, the complimentary rice tasted like Uncle Ben's instant rice (lol). I took off from work today to take care of some urgent business. We finally ended up in the Fort Street Mall area to turn in our paperwork. It was lunchtime and at first we thought about grabbing a burger at McDonald's. But once inside, it all seemed a bit too familiar, with folks standing around for their orders, and the unimaginative menu choices. I suggested we try another place I used to frequent, but when we got there and inquired, they said, "No, we don't make sandwiches, what you see on the menu is what you get." As we walked down Bishop Street, I called out the types of food as we passed, "Greek food" (Leo's Taverna), "Indian food" (Kamana Indian Cuisine)... My wife stopped and seemed interested. We looked at the menu outside. She wasn't in the mood for meats, so decided to try some naan. We walked in and the place seemed packed, except there were a couple of empty tables near the entrance, so we sat there. I asked for two orders of Cheese Garlic Naan (naan topped with garlic and cilantro and stuffed with cheese) and one drink to try, Masala Chai (special creamed tea with Indian herbs and spices), since it looked interesting. After a while, the naan arrived. It tasted pretty good. It reminded my wife of a simple bread she prepared in her youth, which she enjoyed as well. I wasn't sure what to make of the drink, but it wasn't bad. However, I was sure it wasn't something I would be craving later. We were done eating and I wondered how they handled payments, would they leave the check, or would we go up to the register and pay. I was pleased when the server came around with one of those handheld card readers. I used Google Wallet to pay. I was glad I didn't have to handle my physical card with my greasy hands. Always so delicious! Swung by for dinner. They're always lovely to me, in spite of being a table of one (not the case everywhere one eats). The Non-Vegetarian Thali is a FEAST. One of the best values and delicious meals on the island. BURSTING. The baignan bartha is also delicious. So delicious that I ordered it and some chicken tikka for tomorrow. My wife and I frequent Kamana's Bishop Street location (at least once a week), and have been coming for years. The food is always excellent, and the portions generous. Some of our favorite dishes are the lamb vandalu, saag paneer (Indian style cheese cubes in creamy spinach, and the baigan bartah (seasoned grilled eggplant crushed). We also love the service here, especially Maria who is our server most of the time. She is always very warm and friendly, even during lunch or dinner time rush when it is busy (and many times, she is servicing on her own, juggling waiting on dine-in guests as well as take-away orders; for those of use who have worked in food service, we can attest to how stressful this can be). Nevertheless, Maria is always accommodating and she always remembers our personal preferences. She is a big part of the dining experience here. read more

And it had absolutely everything I wanted and craved and honestly I was stuffed to the gills after all that food. Aside from the main dish there was basmati rice, perfect buttery naan, yellow dal, and a curry with aloo and matar which just all *perfectly* hit the spot. There was something else spicy and sweet that I have no idea what it was but it also mixed in perfectly and just an all-around home run meal -- no, a grand slam! Service was excellent, they were super on it with the rhythm and refilling waters and everything, super duper nice too. The patrons at lunch were all smiles with the kind and attentive servers. It's a small cozy restaurant but oddly enough it never felt cramped, they had the space laid out perfectly in my opinion. Any empty tables (not many at lunchtime!) had upturned glasses atop a paper placemat with silverware set ready for the next customer. I really wanted to get that so maybe their new space on kapahulu has it. Ambiance: the space is small but cozy. It can get packed at lunch time so come early. Parking: there are some stalls outside on bishop street that if you are lucky would be the easiest place to park. The next cheapest place is Alii place off Alakea Street. The rates are good for lunch time $1.50 for 2 hours. But make sure you have cash for it. Also, don't recommend taking any large or nice vehicles because the parking is tight! read more

I really liked the food the first time I ate here. The lunch special was on point, especially enjoyed the daal. I had the same waitress this time, and she is impatient and kind of rude which I find strange for someone working in service for tips. Would it hurt you to make someone feel welcome or smile? You would undoubtedly get better tips if you did. I also work in service and know and work with a similar type of person with this unwelcoming attitude. Is it selective towards certain people? Anyway I will say that it wasn't quite as good this second time, and to avoid having any more unpleasant interactions and feeling unwelcome I'll go to the new kamana or somewhere else instead where they actually are nice.
