Edible. The egg rolls are exactly like Costco's. The duck sauce is diluted. My first visit I didn't get welcoming vibes. My second visit they had a customer complaining about an order on speakerphone by the entrance, and (I assume) an owner telling the receptionist what to say to them in Chinese. So rude. It's the only Chinese food for miles, it's edible, but not good food. That's why they are still in business. read more

We ordered $50 worth of food and almost nothing in our order except for the crab Rangoon's was what we ordered. I ordered chow mein, which is usually brown, and I got some sort of white noodle with carrots in a clear snot like substance, and it has no flavor. My brother got some thing that was completely unidentifiable, a pile of something fried? He ordered chicken and got one large glob of something fried. My father ordered chicken fingers and received nothing but sauces and chicken on a stick. The crab Rangoon's had absolutely no crab in it, they were just fried balls of cream cheese. I also ordered fried rice, but received some sort of crispy noodle stick instead. All in all, absolute worst restaurant ever. Side note, my father was friends with the person who did the health inspection last year, and they had rats/mice, running over where they prepared the food. read more

Hing's looks a little iffy on the outside so we decided to do a trial run with some usual standards - Fried dumplings and fried rice - before we committed to a full meal. We were disappointed with both. The fried dumplings were not your usual pot stickers but deep fried pockets of lighter (sort of flaky), anemic dough and heavy on the oil (plenty of dregs at the bottom of the container. The filling was pork, but there was no sign of the typical cabbage or shrimp or ginger. Pork fried rice was our choice in this category. There were the usual cubes of pork with reddened surface. Of course there was rice, but really nothing else except a few flakes of onion here or there. No signs of egg or any kind of veg. Except for the style of the pork, I would not have identified it as Chinese. Blindfolded, you would not be able to identify it as at all Asian. Needless to say, this was disappointing and we are not likely to return. read more

Food was okay, but customer service is deplorable. They are take out phone order only, and there were no menus available. We knocked on the door and a surly person came to the door to wave us away. Told him we needed a menu, and he pointed at an empty bucket outside the door. When he saw it was empty be begrugingly put some fresh menus in the bucket. He then went back inside and shut the door behind them. We ordered by phone, and waited for our food. They did not let us know it was ready, we had to ask for it. Food was ok, not great. Most disappointing however was they did not give us silverware with our meals. We are staying in a hotel, had nothing. Fried rice as finger food does not cut it. Overall, would avoid. read more

Do not eat here. The dumplings look like they are filled with Kidney meet. I tried sweet and sour chicken that looked like mini corn dogs and the sauce was not close to normal! Only Chinese place in town. Customer service was middle of the road. Food was not very flavorful. In particular, lo mein was basically spaghetti noodles with scattered veggies. Soy sauce was a necessary addition. Fried rice was similarly unseasoned. Which was fine. But not what you would expect going to a Chinese restaurant. Of note, entrees do not include rice. Considering the location, I am grading Hing Garden on a bit of a curve. We went in on V-Day and the place was hopping. We were the second party of 10 to walk through the door in about 2 minutes and we were seated after just a few minutes wait. Even though it took a little while for the waitress to take our order, the food started coming almost immediately-- we were eating family style so we just passed each plate around as it arrived and chowed down. It was pretty good food, actually and so were the cocktails-- which are "traditional" in the tiki sense. A number of people ordered drinks and we had those family style too! We all left full and some of us lightweights (ok, me) even had a buzz. read more

Greasy Chinese food comes to Downeast. This place opened when I was still living in Jonesboro, so around 2002 or 2001. Iv'e been a few times over the years, mostly for take out. In terms of price it was pretty cheap to feed 4 people, came to around $30 and we had a good selection of food. The fried rice was not too greasy, crab rangoon perfectly done, and other assorted entrees we good too. Now when I had gone in the past to eat in we'd order drinks. They have a rule that you can't just order drinks, so my friend learned that you can order a bowl of white rice and get a drink. So at one point we did just that, the 2 of us with a bowl of white rice and strong drinks. Because we weren't eating the rice the waitress came by and told us if we weren't going to eat the rice we'd have to leave. So we made a show of eating some rice. (Her liquor license was the sort for an eating establishment and she could have lost it if we hadn't eaten. Got to love Maine law.) For greasy Chinese food Hing garden is just like any greasy Chinese food place, but pretty well done for the woods of Maine. Even if this place were near my home here in Mass I'd give it 4 stars. Well worth a visit if your driving through Machias and crave Chinese food. If there is no parking in front of the place you can go across the street and park in the bank lot if it's after their hours. read more

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Combination plates were cheap, but hey...you get what you pay for, right? Pork fried rice was simply white rice doused in some soy sauce with a few cubes of pork thrown in. It was the most bland Chinese food I've ever eaten. Three final words. Crap Chinese. The only Chinese place around for miles, and I think they know it. Any plates with just veggies are fresh and tasty. If you want to get meat on the other hand, it has been much better elsewhere. The service is rude. If you have a problem with an order, forget about them putting the customer first. The last and final time we came to this restaurant for carry-out, I had a beef dish that made me gag with the first forkful. The meat tasted like it had been sitting out all day. We drove back to Hing Garden and let them know we thought the meat was bad. Instead of asking us if we wanted anything else or just giving us our money back, the lady behind the front desk scowled and became defensive, and insisted I was lying or being malicious, "I don't know why you say that! My meat is good!". Knowing bad food happens, I threw her a bone, "It's okay. I've worked in restaurants before. It happens once in a while." "I don't know why you say that meat is bad! I check the meat everyday!" This went on for a few more minutes while other customers were gathering at the counter. I was being discreet and keeping my voice low, but the lady insisted on making a show and arguing instead of providing a solution for her customer. I took my wife here to have dinner. Definitely know what is supposed to be in your order. They tried serving me something that was not what I ordered. After asking the waitress about it, she said they didn't have ingredients to make what I ordered. So they tried pulling a fast one and just brought out a dish containing some of the ingredients specified. When confronted again about having to pay for it, she was very rude stating that I was making a big deal over it! I had to pay for a meal I did not even eat. I LOVE this place! It has a really great lunch buffet M-F from 11-2 and I think on Sundays. Definitely no buffet on Saturday, as we found out this past weekend. The buffet is fairly small, but the food is fresh, fresh, fresh. It just tastes better than most Chinese food I've had, and we have quite a good comparison range from Dallas, New York City, Florida, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. I give Hing Garden high marks for having an excellent lunch buffet and we eat there often. We'll have to try dinner or ordering off of the menu sometime. Parking can be a problem during a busy lunch, so get their either early or a little later. Good service, too. Very nice, attentive, and friendly staff. read more

Decided to try the Cashew Chicken and it was about 70% what I assume was bok choy and 5% chicken, along with only being okay at best. The fried rice looked old and the only thing decent about my meal was the chicken wing and the crab rangoons. On top of all this, the prices must have gone up a lot because our 4 combo meals and side of rangoons came to about $10 more than they usually are. All around very unimpressed. read more

I'm generally not inclined to write restaurant reviews, but this has to be said. This is the worst Chinese I have ever eaten. I ordered Schezwan Pork. Although the bok choy had a decent crunch, the pork was a bit tough and tasteless; the mushrooms were canned and it wasn't spicy, as Schezwan should be. But worse than that, I had eaten a few bites and as I was getting ready to spear a water chestnut, I spied a staple on top of the water chestnut. Although the manager offered a weak apology, he was more focused on explaining why the staple was there. Apparently when it gets busy in the kitchen with take-out orders, 'the staples go flying'. They staple the receipts to the paper bags in the kitchen near open food so sometimes you get a staple with your Chow Mein, but they don't charge extra! The manager offered to prepare another dish of the same, but I declined. My two companions were now concerned about what they might find in there food, and I asked about compensating their meals as well. That wasn't an option. After trying to explain our concerns with their kitchen practices, without success, we were asked to leave and never come back. Of course there was never a consideration we would go back, but it's the first time I've ever been asked to leave a restaurant. read more
