This is the most "9th and 9th" little shop you'll ever find! It fits in perfectly with the area and I'm glad I stumbled across it. Yesterday, my wife and I were in the area looking for some local goodies as Christmas presents and made our way into Hip & Humble. The outside is very inviting-I love the color of the house-turned-retail building. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by Mabe, the beautiful resident dog. She happily sniffed us, let us pet her and then she went back to her duties of wandering the store. Any place that has a dog is A-OK in my book! Each item in the shop appears to have been carefully curated to be here. Nothing seems out of place or odd. I love every item and how cohesive everything feels. Up front, you'll find an assortment of knick-knacks, home goods, soaps & lotions, etc. Toward the back is a room full of unique women's clothing and accessories. The owner visited with us briefly and we felt very welcome to be there. It's a fun atmosphere with adorable items. I look forward to returning for additional gift items in the future. read more

Hip and Humble is basically the best gift shop ever (Or at least in Utah). I'd previously been to their Sandy location before it had closed, and while I liked it I wasn't blown away. This one is much more fun. They have such a fantastic mix of products: Clothing, jewelry, kitchen items (aprons, cookbooks, dishes, utensils), beauty products, decorations, really funny socks, even doormats. It's one of those places you can go when you need a gift for someone and have no idea what to give them, and you'll definitely leave with a treasure. It's housed in an old home, painted turquoise blue, and the whole set up is really lovely. I visited with a friend, and I wouldn't have thought it would be her cup of tea, but she actually loved it. They didn't have what we were searching for, but we ended up spending a good twenty minutes just wandering around checking everything out because it was so fun! Prices are reasonable to pricey, depending on what you're looking at. I think this is to be expected at a gift shop, as part of what you're paying for is the work their buyer does in finding really creative and cool items, and bringing them together in a cohesive way that inspires you. We didn't end up buying anything (shock!), but only because we agreed we'd be back shortly. If I had made a purchase I would have gotten the cutest green mermaid mug, a dog print apron, and some La Cucina dish soap. Oh and Agave body oil that smelled like a dream. And a cookbook... The only negative I can give is that we were never greeted or spoken to by any employee, but maybe they were just busy. I will forgive this time, and see what the experience is when I actually make a purchase. read more

Located in the radness that is the 9th & 9th neighborhood, it's one of those old homes turned into shops that I absolutely adore. Thtat's squeeworhty right there, but then you pack it full of treasures for your home, gifts for friends, and classy but hip clothes in the back and you've got a recipe for exsqueem cute overload. Come here for inspiration. Find that little something for your friends that they never knew they wanted and don't know how they could ever live without it. I've walked past this place so many times with my dog thinking "I'm gunna stop in there some time." Well I finally did it and this little boutique is the cutest! They have some of the funniest, cutest, most unique gifts I've ever seen. Prices are boutique prices...you're not really gunna get a "deal" unless you go to the clearance section. I didn't look at the apparel too much, but what I did peek at was a striped jumpsuit type of thing and it was $210, so yeah boutique prices. However, I've heard this shop, as well as many others around 9th & 9th are female owned, so hell yeah! Women empowering other women, love it. I ended up just getting a cute card (which I needed) and a funny little pack of gum. Will definitely be back at some point. read more

The staff treats you like a thief until you show that you're actually going to make a purchase. Literally following me around, eying me suspiciously, snobbishly staring me down, and asking me if I'm "finding everything ok?" every 5-6 minutes isn't customer service, it's telling me you want me out of your store as fast as possible. It was not subtle. I was unfortunately still dressed from work. Their attitude completely shifted when I showed I was, in fact, purchasing $200 of gifts. To be fair, many stores do this, but is still an unfortunate symptom of chic consumerism in a thin wrapper of "humble" trendiness in a mixed neighborhood. Y'all need to humble yourselves and be less presumptuous. read more

Each year I visit family in SLC, they always take me here. It's one of my favorite places to stimulate the Utah economy with California dollars. The shop is adorable with wood floors and a cosy feel. Sometimes the quarters can be a bit close especially if there are more than a few people shopping. They always have an eclectic mix of housewares, stationery, perfume and jewelry. Beautiful & Bountiful. The interior of this store is fun and arty. They've converted elements of a residential home like a vintage refigerator or sink into cute little showcases for merch. Things are arranged in sensible groupings like makeup, clothing, stationary etc. The store is much bigger than you'd expect, and it's very relaxing to stroll among the natural light and hardwoods. The gift items in the store seem about 2/3 higher end mass market stuff and 1/3 localish and or smal run. I don't tend to like giftshop gifts, but I found the trend here towards more thoughtful, unique and useful items. Customer service is excellent. Was warmly greeted and given all the attention I needed trying to find a Mother's Day gift. read more

I really do love this store and I usually find something fun in there, but I always feel like I should have found more once I leave the store. It's a very cute little bungalow full of gifts, jewelry, clothes and kitchen gadgets, but I always feel like I can't quite find what I'm looking for. It's in the trendy area of 9th and 9th in Salt Lake and I love that it's in a remodeled home, but it's also full to the brim and I frequently feel a bit claustrophobic and like I might brush by something and break it. All that being said, it's bright and cheery and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I do feel it's a bit overpriced, but that might be just me. Let me begin by saying I adore this store and have bought a wide range of adorable clothes here - including my favorite "dressy" jacket, which is black with green polka dots and totally looks like something French and so, tres, tres chic - cute and beloved jewelery items, stationary, and other wee gift items, both for friends and family, who have all oohed and ahhed over the quirky/cute. I love their selection, though I do agree with an earlier poster who said they wish there was more local artist's goods instead of stuff from China... ahem. I know it would bring the prices up some, but I think many would be willing to pay. That being said, I do have some constructive feedback regarding customer service. While I have always found it to be friendly and always helpful and attentive (I have been coming to the store sine 2007), I have recently found it to be more keyed up and just plain pushy, something I really don't expect - or want - in most boutiques in Salt Lake, especially in a hip neighborhood which I tend to imagine gets enough traffic that it doesn't need this kind of sales pitch. I can't assume though. I know the economy hasn't been so awesome these days. Are they working on commission or expected to meet quotas? Is this why? Or is it simply the directive from higher up? I understand, you need to keep your business up and running, you have to be competitive. But at a certain point, it doesn't feel like personalized service but simply a push to make sure you buy SOMETHING. I don't want to have something shoved in my hands just so you can take my money. We both know that is the end goal here, but please help me walk away with something I actually want. You will pretty much guarantee my return patronage that way. I was once in here and watched one of the salespeople try to sell a woman a pair of white skinny jeans (ok, no thanks) that she clearly didn't like or want and explicitly said "you know, I realize they look ok on my, but honestly, I probably wouldn't ever wear these." Honest and to the point. The saleswoman, instead of saying something along the lines of "ok, lets find you something else you love instead!" proceeded to explain to her where, how and why she would wear them ALL THE TIME like she just didn't know it yet.... The customer looked uncomfortable. I felt uncomfortable for her, and made a note to dodge this salesperson. If I was her, I probably wouldn't have wanted to come back... Yeah, I know that sounded scathing, but overall I love what these guys have to offer, the store is very attractive with cute stuff. Hence the four stars. Just please take it down a notch? read more

So basically if you want to give a gift to someone, no matter what kind of person the gift is for, stick with the shops around 9th&9th. I love Cahoots, but Hip & Humble is just as wonderful, but for a different type of gift. This is great for finding little knickknacks for the home, from tea infusers to aprons to books or jewelry. There are a lot of cute journals and notepads for specific types of writing (I bought a gratitude journal here a while back and it's been a great way to reflect on things I'm blessed with). There's a lot of cute novelty items, and I regularly stop in here when looking for a housewarming gift for a friend. The staff is friendly and does not probe at all the way many do in a smaller gift shop, which just makes shopping here an even more enjoyable experience! read more

A store in the 9th & 9th area in a little cottage. It's hip & humble in a Salt Lake City sort of way (which is ok, because, well...it's in SLC), but it had mostly things that I've already seen a ton of in San Francisco--same candles, soaps, accessories, etc. they did have some handbags, though, that I've not seen before that were kind of cool and really reasonably priced. I would have loved to have seen some locally made 'hip & humble' crafty type of things rather than just more tchoschky manfactured in China. What I thought was really a nice touch was that the owner was there, offering fresh baked cookies and bottled water to people as they came in the door. read more

I work right across the street from H&H as a barista so I get to chat with some of the employees before they go in to work. Rachel and Sheridan are so sweet to me, even if I come in wearing my dirty coffee clothes and ugly shoes. The store is perfect, so charming and full of options for anyone on your gift list. (Even yourself) I've honestly never gone in and left empty handed. I've almost been in tears over gifts for people and with the help of any member of their staff or a lap around the store I've turned my mood around, found some great stuff, and have had a great conversation. The thing I love most about this site is that you have a chance to see an outsiders perspective. For the most part, i agree with the reviews and also learn a thing or two. However, this girl couldn't be more wrong about Hip & Humble. I've lived in California as well and rarely could find the same gifts that they sell at this store. It is owned and operated by two sisters with great taste. They are consistently changing their product. And, sell multiple LOCAL artists merchandise. Hip and Humble's buyers have a unique and seasoned curatorial eye that I depend on for the majority of my gifting and fashion needs. Stepping inside is like walking into your oldest friend's colorful, artistic and deliciously scented home--and don't forget that there's a giant, walk-in closet in the back! The store is fond of several hard-to-find international lines, like Fly London shoes, and I can always spot well-tailored basics on their racks. My favorite recent purchase has to be the golden shift dress that I wore for New Year's Eve, and I currently have my eye on a few of their flowy, bohemian skirts. Much like a home, the store is divided into room-specific areas. While browsing the living room, bathroom and kitchen I've discovered gifts for baby showers, weddings, housewarming parties--and even Father's Day. Also, my girlfriends have come to expect Hip and Humble jewelry boxes on their birthdays each year. Their selection is ever-changing, and the store stocks local artists, which I love.
