May 2023 My husband placed an order for to go. This was the first time trying the chicken from this location. It was also the worst chicken and fries we've had of all their locations that we have tried. The chicken looked old and stale even though my husband saw them take it out of the fryer. The fries didn't taste fresh either and perhaps was overcooked. Maybe the oil they used was bad. I found this place during my recent trip to Baltimore, while trying to find somewhere to grab a decent dinner around 9pm. It's a no frills, straight forward joint. Bottom line... they're legit. Fast service, great prices, and good food. The cake slices are huge and delicious. I love that they also offer a huge fruit salad for only $2.50, filled with grapes and honeydew. Oh God the fried chicken is so good here and it is so cheap!! Let's see...the wings seem to shrink every time I go...smaller, and smaller, and smaller...BUT, I love it! The chicken here is really good. The lemon pepper they put on all of their foods really brings out the flavor. The wings and catfish are my favorite. When they first opened the guys that worked there would talk to you and carry on a conversation, but now that they are so busy, it's all business. Not much interaction with their customers. If you haven't read my earlier reviews, well, as a result of the HBO series, the Wire; I'm on the hunt for the best in Baltimore phenomenon, LAKE TROUT. It seems that I can't even find the true definition of what exactly is considered Baltimore's fried Lake Trout. With that said, I love fried foods--america's comfort food! You should know that I also LOVE fried chicken. Tipped off by a neighbor that Randallstown and vicinity was jammed packed with chicken and fish joints, my wingman and I set out on a mission to stop at every joint we saw and compare/contrast the fare. While technically not in the "City", I deemed it close enough to B-more to be authentic. We stopped on in at HHFC as a second stop on our Lake Trout mission. With their prominent signage, its hard to miss it from the road. One of the interesting things about this place is that they have a giant menu in their window, so you could prep your order from the outside or parking lot. The place is mainly a carryout joint with a few small tables for quick eat n go. They have a small display counter with some deserts and side orders behind the windowed glass. Reading their newspaper plaque, HHFC hails from the Windy City, Chicago. So definitely, this place is not going to be a B-more original, however...it might become a B-more favorite nonetheless!! HHFC has a wide selection of different species of fish you can choose to fry from such as Ocean Perch, Whiting, Trout, Catfish, Tilapia, and Shrimp. They also have an urban chicken offering from wings to livers and gizzards, and nuggets to boot. You will also find some other uncommon dishes (especially in the 'burbs) like Okra and Corn Nuggets. They have various platter offerings. We selected the "Choose 2" platter and got whiting and trout since these were the most common fish in the City to benchmark against. HHFC served up some healthy portions of fish and fries plus slices of Wonder bread (probably some other institutional brand but tastes the same). The batter has a very unique flavor. My wingman and I couldn't quite figure out what exact spices were in their recipe. Its a bit salty, sweet, spicy, and tangy...nothing too dramatic nor overpowering. They use the same seasoning on the fries which proved delightfully interesting. VERDICT: TASTY, would definitely not hesitate to return if convenient but not go way outta my way to eat here. It gets crowded in the evening and on the weekends, so it's best to call in your order. If you call it in before you hop in your car, then it will be ready by the time you get there (about 10-15 minutes). You know, Thugnificent really had me fooled. Ever since moving to this area, I would occasionally drive by this "hood spot." Liberty Rd. is full of questionably edible, poorly titled, and "don't get caught up here after a certain hr." type food joints so you know, what could possibly separate "Hip Hop Chicken" from all the other ones? Well, thanks to Thug's review I was sold when I discovered the restaurant name was actually relevant to their meals, or so I thought. Before I got the fuck outta Baltimore, I said I would stop by this place and I did....on a date! Yes, that's right, I am one classy broad! But the day I would decide to try Hip Hop Chicken's food, would be the day that I did not willingly pay for it, sooooo (Kayne shrug). Anywho, I suggested this place for a cheap meal and Yelp said it was good. To our disappointment, they DO NOT have meals named after rappers lol. The disappointment was CRUSHINGGGGG, but honestly this was the ONLY disappointment. I was *shocked* at how good this food was and how cheap it was. For example, you could get a $5 meal that includes TWO meaty chicken breasts, fries, bread underneath, and a half 'n half. I don't even think you can get 2/3 of that for $5 at Popeyes! Other menu items I've tried: catfish and hush puppies. They are soooooo what the dr. ordered! Listen, do not sleep on HHF&C!!! The chicken/fish is crisp and the meat very succulent for being deep-fried. They have so much on their menu, so there is lots of variety to choose from. The first time I had HHF&C, I went back 2 more times in one week!!!! To date, I've been there like 7x now, which is even worse because it's fried 100% in vegetable oil. I'm risking my life for this shit, but it sooo worth it! I've even converted four friends of mine onto Hip Hop. With that said, I think they are putting crack on their food, no honestly, I see them sprinkle this salt on all the food, but it's a special salt....crack salt. You heard it hear first ppl!! I absolutely love the cheap prices and the large portions that you get. The food is cooked well. Sometimes when I get the chicken breast it is close to dry, but it's huge too so I guess they try to ensure that it's done all the way through. I enjoy the chicken tenders because it is all fresh breast meat, meaty tenders, and never dry. The whiting is cooked the same, but in my opinion they are cut a little thin and lack meat. I've had thicker whiting elsewhere. The fries are good and don't forget your two slices of white bread buried under your mountain of fried goodies. I love the hot sauce it's pretty spicy you only need a little bit. My biggest peeve is that they have No SALT! I was shocked and confused when I asked if they had any salt packets and the guy said they don't ever have it.
