What was once the butt of a national joke, this place is truly a relic of Portland that keeps on living. Even some of the staff seem like relics and will help you reestablish some earthly soul into your "fixer upper". Turn of the century plumbing, lighting, and fixtures add character for which to personalize who you are. I couldn't find a lighting fixture as my Wife and I thought the choices were a little spendy. Couldn't find anything for our clawfoot tub, either. Since the housing market has been busy, seems like the choices are becoming smaller. I truly hope that they can keep the Portland spirit alive. Ok. I'm changing my original review. I have grown to really like this place. I still think it's unfortunate that I wasn't able to strike a deal to get my original lighting fixtures back because I see that they are still there but that's not what I'm writing about. I'm updating because despite that incident, I really like this place and the people that work there. I have been here on a few other occasions for various items and recently came to have 2 lamps rewired. The lady who works on the 1st floor is always awesome along with the other people that work there. Depending on what you are going there for you can fight a good deal and they do good work. They even gave me a name for someone to fix my pocket doors. So yes, they were not willing to sell me back my original lights that came from my house or even let me put them on layaway or make payments to afford their asking price, but aside from that, they are A-Ok. Who knows? Maybe once I continue to go there I might strike up a deal with them. read more

A great place to find vintage fixtures but be warned its at sky high prices. A museum and a treasure trove all at once. This is a very nice business that specializes in vintage hardware, such as door knobs, hinges, locks, bathroom fixtures, etc. They sell very elegant and historical products, some new, and many antique. It is a cool store to look around in, and to compare the quality of materials from early times to the cheap junk that companies sell nowadays. Their hardware department put a lot of effort in helping me find nice vintage door knobs and back plates, and they even prepared them beautifully for me. I am very impressed with the product select, knowlege, and helpfulness of the staff. I don't remember the name of the man who helped me (it may be Tom, with the shaved head), but he spent a lot of time to get me exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much. I have been shopping here with my parents since I was a kid. Fast forward to now and my husband and I own a 1910 craftsman. We come here often to pick up picture molding hooks (I should have just bought 50 to begin with) and just poke around. Recently we had our bathroom lock degreased and restored for the not so expensive fee of $20. We have also bought random replacement items for our house that can not be found in a regular hardware store. We plan to buy a claw foot tub eventually and this will be my first stop. Now to my complaint. The store is not very clean. Especially the lighting, honestly it's a little sketchy, and it's expensive. No thanks. I have been trying to get to Hippo Hardware for quite awhile despite the fact that my apt is less than half a mile away. I am moving out of state in a few days so last weekend I finally made the treacherous pilgrimage up the street. I'm so glad I did. This building is like a rickety old wagon pieced together with old latches and yet somehow remains to stand firmly. There are multiple levels and stairways to magically take you to another place in time. Latches and hinges (which was my reason for going), lighting, bathroom showers, sinks, shelves, ...and then don't forget about the basement where you will find door frames, window frames and so much more. There are hard hats to actually crawl under the floors of the basement where you will find molding and other trimings. The icing on the cake was the customer service. Bobby was busy talking with a customer when I walked in but after over an hour of me roaming the store and digging thru multiple bins to find matching hinges for my latch I picked out ....he found me. He wanted to take a look at the latch to make sure it was working properly. It wasnt. He took that thing apart and gave it a complete overhaul and then gave me matching screws. It was super rad and probably the best customer service I have received in my 4.5 years of living in Portland. I took pics of Bobby working on the latch that I will post, he is a true gem. Genuine and truly himslef. He's not trying to be hip or cool, but by default he totally is. Do yourself a favor and shop at Hippo. Forget the big box chain stores. read more

Hippo Hardware, oh yeah they're Hip, as in Too Cool for School. They're too Hip to search the sales floor for the item you're interested in and when you ask how much a used one might be, they snap "the same as a new one." And you don't even know how much that is because they circumvented that question too. And you have to ask how much everything *might* be because nothing is tagged. Then when you say how you intend to repurpose the item they throw you this look of disdain that says they are recalculating how they *should* have quoted that price, based on how much profit *could* have been had if only their brains would have foreseen such ingenius creativity. Although I haven't bought anything at Hippo Hardware (yet), I loved wandering around in there. It's like a funhouse for lovers of house parts. Stairs going up, ramps going down, a basement full of old doors and fireplace screens. A floor with every kind of hanging light you can imagine (if you like imagining old-style hanging lights...no IKEA here folks). I love walking around this store and getting ideas. The staff here is super nice. If they don't have what you're looking for, they will use their network to find it. Really great selection of old light fixtures upstairs as well, don't forget to check it out. Bought a bunch of new (made in Taiwan) cast iron coat hooks. What amazing customer service! First let me start by saying that I have never stepped foot in Portland (much to my chagrin), BUT I have spent some time working with them on the phone regarding the lock to my antique security door, circa 1900. After buying an historic home in downtown Columbus, Ohio earlier this year, the tailpiece broke on my security door on the front. Through the magical rabbit hole that is Reddit, I was lead to a vintage hardware reproduction company in Portland, House of Antique Hardware. They said they didn't have anything that would work for my door, BUT they gave me Bobby's name at Hippo Hardware and said that if anyone would know it, he would. I called and talked with Bobby, who asked if I could send some pictures of the door and its lock over to him so he could get a better idea of what we were working with. I sent the pictures over and not five minutes later he called me back talking about how beautiful the door was, but that unfortunately they didn't sell any sort of tailpiece that would fit it. He did, however, give me some good ideas for what types of shops might be able to cast or machine a new piece for me. I can't stress enough how awesome this type of customer service is, when someone knows that they aren't going to make a sale, but still puts in all sorts of effort to help the customer because it's what they do. It was cool just talking to Bobby and hearing his passion for this type of stuff. If/when I do finally visit Portland, I'd like to make a special visit to this hardware store. read more

I've been coming to this architectural hardware store since 2015 when I began restoring my dilapidated 1927 home. The scope of inventory is astounding as is the collective knowledge of the staff who work here. I am fanatical about restoring period features and character to my house - luckily the staff here also seem to share preservationist fanaticism in varying degrees! If you care about the historical and architectural integrity of your home you're in good company. I started with the hardware department trying to source period glass knobs and accompanying locksets and escutcheons that were missing from my home. Bobby helped me not only source original glass hardware sets for my interior French doors but even modified a period key to fit the lock so the doors were fully functional! They look beautiful. I then moved on to fixing the 12 broken windows where I first met the omniscient and ever patient Tim who helped me find period panel doors and ripple glass- helping me sort through what seemed like acres of glass to find the correct panes. Currently I'm working on restoring and replacing the 19 Art Deco sconces and chandeliers that had been stripped from my house. Fortunately for me (and most likely unfortunately for him) Tim has now moved to the lighting department which seems to have undergone a complete re-organization since he started working there. Tim's knowledge and obvious enthusiasm for period fixtures translates into helpfulness and an indefatigable patience for the tedious intricacies of both my requests and the light fixtures he helps me with. Tim and the folks in the workshop have helped me refurbish multiple fixtures as well as giving me tips on how to clean and maintain the metalwork and glass. I can't thank them enough and for an Art Deco enthusiast like me, flipping the switch on a newly restored and installed light fixture is an unparalleled joy. I also have to mention Annie who always makes me laugh and frequently regales me with snippets of stories of Harley's and Hippos- a life far more exciting than mine will ever be no doubt- I park my emasculating 1987 Honda 50cc moped around the corner and don't mention it....... It was a warm Spring day, and I was early to my next business appointment which was a few blocks down the street. I was the only person inside.... and it was just before the workers and owner had their Lunches. I asked if they had hired a new employee recently after the owners told me their favorite jokes. I was told they did. I asked what the person's name they hired was. They told me. I asked what the doors that slide all the way into the wall were called. They told me. I will NEVER come to this shop again. The shop owners pretend to be nice but that's only if you're not inconveniencing them. It took over 3 weeks to do something they said would certainly take less than two. After having my order for 2 weeks I got a call about how long I wanted the cord, which was all written down in my original conversation with Jane. I called back on a Sunday at 11:55am and someone answered the phone so I said I was returning a call from Jane to which they replied, "We aren't open. Call back at 12." Really? FIVE MINUTES? Fine. I hung up already irritated and called back 5 minutes later. Someone else answered the phone and I again said I was returning a call from Jane about an order. "Well she doesn't work today." Okay... Well can someone help me with my order? "Just tell me I guess." Oh that makes me feel good about the $200 I dropped in your store. I started to tell this gentleman named Andy about the length I thought would work and asked if that sounded about right for 8.5' ceilings and he just says, "How should I know it's your light." Wow. Really? I'm asking for your help and you're going to be a jerk. I gave him the measurement and hung up on them. More weeks go by before my order is finally ready and I come in to pick it up to stand there for 20 minutes before anyone pays attention to me or even says hello or hang on in their sweltering building and when I finally get my order back I see on a piece of paper they wrote, "CUTIE! Any ideas?" Are you fucking kidding me??? If a cute boy asks me to go someplace with them, chances are I'll go. Even if that means a trip to a hardware store, I'm just a sucker for a pretty face. I love bargain shopping - thrift stores, rummage sales, I'm in! Even thought I needed NOTHING at this store something about it called out to my inner deal hunter. They have new products but a lot of it is vintage, and one of a kind. I prowled around the store rummaging through boxes of old appliances and checking out interesting house wear. I could've stayed there for hours just checking everything out, the selection is out of control! My friend ended up getting a good deal of vintage lighting for pretty inexpensive. It definitely needs some TLC but for you handy people out there this is the place to find those diamonds in the rough. They have a ton of unique things that could really take your house to the next level and give it a nice vintage look. The employees are very passionate and knowledgeable. You can tell that they work here because they love what they do, they aren't just after the cash flow. For someone like me who would go in 100% clueless they would be a huge asset. I didn't think I would enjoy my time at Hippo Hardware but I really liked just browsing around. It made me wish I was more handy or had a home to fix up. What a shame. This could be a gem of a store, with their massive inventory and great finds. BUT... the prices are way too high. Even the minor hardware is nearly double in price. For example, 1-1/4th inch glass hexagonal drawer pulls (repro) are $6.00 each whereas at other locations right here in PDX they run $3.00-$3.75. But you know, I could take higher prices if I knew I would be supporting cool people who pay their employees fairly and treat them (and us) with respect and courtesy. Not the case here. When I first walked in the older woman who I am to assume is the owner was loudly berating an employee. Worse though, is that he might have an intellectual disability. Nonetheless, it's a major red-flag when owners/employees are fighting and screaming at each other and airing their dirty laundry in front of customers. But to berate someone in a lower position - reeks of exploitation. The lighting "expert" was also incredibly callous and rude, but also a fibber, who tended to spend more time bragging about his expertise (in engineering... yeah. okay buddy), then offering any real help. Prices were all over the place, often ad-hock. There was another guy up at lighting who was genuinely nice, but what sucked is that head-lighting-expert-man was really mean to him - barking orders and well, just being a dick. It's really a matter of time before this nice guy goes sour too. Anyone would after having to put up with this culture of hostility. As I went to pay for my things I mentioned that I did not care for their cavalier and smarmy attitude toward me, and they (who I assume were the owners) became defensive over it, and then cold and brash. This even extended to when I was already outside of their shop on the sidewalk and one of their (quirky, smh) employees murmured a slur toward me under his breath. What I got out of my visit is that this just seems to be the culture of the place, and that because they have built a business on a myth of eccentricity and quirkiness, that they can skirt their duty to to treat their employees with dignity and respect. When we bought our 1908 Portland Classic Craftsman in the Portland Heights it had wires hanging out of the ceiling in 22 places. 4 months later, the Hippo lighting team had helped us acquire 3 antique slipper shade chandeliers from the 1910s and 1920s and had rewired and UL certified those and about twenty other period light fixtures. He indulged me with a few minutes in the cute lingerie shop and then dragged me across the street to Hippo Hardware. As an out-of-towner I had never heard of the place, but clearly it is legendary! THE place to come to stock up for home-renovation and restoration projects. Apparently, a few of the McMenamins bars have been restored largely from the Hippo Hardware stock. From light fixtures to door handles to toilets and bathtubs, they have it all. I almost purchased some beautfiul old-timey drawer hardware I have absolutely no use for. Friendly staff. You see, Hippo Hardware has a bunch of old stuff. Pipes, nipples (heh), faucets, riser pipes, etc. Aside from old stuff, they've also got old school knowledge. Did you know that a thin copper pipe can be rethreaded? Neither did I, the guy at George Morlan, or ol' Snuffy at Home Depot. Thankfully, Tyler at Hippo possesses the arcane knowledge of our forefathers' plumbers. He threaded that pipe, and in doing so plugged a colossal leak in my wallet. I know it's not the most conventional of stops on a tour of Portland, but I had a great time at Hippo Hardware. I wasn't expecting much, but after hearing from a friend that they had some authentically cool stuff I had to make the trip. I went in and immediately was amazed. I mean really, who actually finds hardware stores exciting? I expected a bunch of old shower faucets and knobs of some kind, but instead I was greeted with a treasure trove from the past. Between the stained glass and turn of the century fixtures I was perplexed as to how such a store could operate and with multiple floors to boot! I found myself and hour in and still fascinated. After speaking with a clerk I purchased two old French-victorian faucet knobs that I knew my friend would know what to do with. Antique door handles, locks, keys, bathtubs, light fixtures, lamps, toilets, and faucet handles (also random trinkets that I wouldn't really consider hardware) line the walls, shelves, ceilings and floors! And man is all of it cool! There is even a desk that bears a sign claiming, "anything can be a lamp," furnished with convincing examples. On one hand, This place is so cool. I have no idea how many years it took to accumulate all these house parts and organize them in this multi level store. It is kind of like a museum. Really awesome to walk through. I have found and bought several items here over the years. On the other hand, I do not understand how they can justify some of the prices on things in this store. You can buy many of the items here much cheaper brand new. "Oh wait", you say. "They don't make stuff like this anymore. The quality in this old rusty hinge set is awesome!" But is it actually usable for something other than looking at? Why would I pay $400 for an old but cool craftsman style entry door that is warped? It can never be used as an actual door again. Unmatched dented and damaged cabinet knobs $12 each!? Even some of the newer(Chinese made) "old" knobs they had were priced at twice the cost of new. Hippo is a total beast of a hardware store, with rare antique accessories for every room and the wildest assortment of chandeliers you've ever seen. This is not the place to go if you need a few screws (they have a giant box of every size, and it's help yourself) but it is the place for antique door handles, gorgeous Victorian light fixtures, and general fun. For antique fixtures, this is the place to go. It's also fun to wander around in the dust and piles and look for treasures, or imagine remodeling a monster Victorian home with crystal handles and clawfoot tubs. I once went in looking for a shower part and was led through a labyrinth to a room full of shower goods of every era and type. Then I was left alone, and I honestly wondered if I could find my way back to the door. I did, but barely, and I admit, I fantasized a bit about being locked in and spending the night exploring room upon room of creepy old odds and ends. Have steampunk will travel Found Hippo's on a driveby to Velveteria going the wrong way which just happened to help facilitate the turn around. Imagine Powell's but hardware. Originally the stain glass in the windows, the strange hippos painted on the columns outside, and the building itself caught my attention in about the span of 5 seconds. Never happier I stopped somewhere on a whim. Steampunk mods anyone? This place is a veritable cornucopia of Victorian hardware. Antique hinges, lights, porcelain, randomness is at your fingertips. This building takes up what seems to be a city block and takes on the likeness to David Bowie's Labyrinth minus the unsightly bulge. I'm not even sure there is a target demographic to this monstrosity of metal. You don't need to own a home or have any knowledge of hardware to enjoy this place.
