First off, always bring a jacket here even if it's hot outside. The AC here is terribly cold. As regulars here for decades, sometimes with mild turbulent experiences, this specific visit highlighted a real decline in how the restaurant operates. We arrived close to sunset on a cool evening, yet the dining room was uncomfortably cold with air blowing directly on our backs. Staff can be seen to the side rubbing their upper arms trying to warm themselves. Patrons near us (tables really close) also expressed discontent with the chilly air and food. I asked a server if they could adjust the temperature twice. Finally, I got up and went to the counter and in broken English, the younger woman just shrugged and muttered that the AC was off, even though cold air was clearly still blowing--surely their HVAC system has a heater. After sitting there in a really cold dining room freezing and hearing other diners continue to complain, we decided to walk out without ordering. The cashier gave a completely scripted, insincere apology on our way out. It feels like they simply do not care about the dine-in experience or the tips customers leave anymore. I feel customers need to be more vocal and use their wallets as a method of approval. I also noticed a newly posted sign saying they now close between 3 and 4 pm for staff breaks, which seems to point to obvious staffing issues. There's way too many Sushi restaurants competing for business in the Highgate Metrotown area, this one has fallen off the rails. And I can't imagine how bad management is with these kinds of working conditions.

The Bento boxes are just as outstanding. Good quantity and great quality food. The chicken pieces in the Teriyaki chicken bento box are of substantial size and flavorful. The price as gone up to $16.99 for the Chicken Bento box, but in comparison, it is an excellent deal especially at dinner time when other places charge 20 bucks or more.

We sat down in what appeared to be the designated waiting area directly beside the bar/front counter and waited for around 10 minutes. Nobody said hello, nobody told us they'd be with us shortly, and nobody gave us any indication of how long we might be waiting. I'm not expecting to be treated like royalty. We're really busy, but we'll be with you soon" would have been perfectly fine. Warm and communicative service tends to make me want to tip generously. Feeling like my existence hasn't been acknowledged tends to have the opposite effect. Could I have walked up to the counter and taken the initiative myself? Of course. But after sitting right beside it for 10 minutes without anyone bothering to greet us, why would I chase someone down when there's another sushi restaurant about 500 metres away? So we left and went to Tobiko Sushi, and I'm genuinely glad we did. It's a quaint little restaurant with cute drinks, gorgeous food items and, most importantly, fantastic customer service. They were busy too, but our waitress still welcomed us warmly while she was helping another table. We only waited a couple of minutes to be seated, were promptly brought water, and genuinely felt like they were happy to have us there. So thank you, Sushi On, for inadvertently helping us discover our new favourite sushi restaurant across the street. I'll definitely be spreading the word about how fabulous Tobiko's customer service was. Being busy is understandable. Being too busy to acknowledge customers sitting directly beside your front counter is not.
