Good tasting sushi and decent portions but the issue is with the service or more particularly the slow delivery of food. During the lunch hour half of our table finished their lunches while the other half was still waiting for their meals, not right. Take for example that slice of lemon right next to the yellow tail sashimi... we can't get sh*t like that in california and even if we could I'd be double the price. The place was packed when I arrived around 8 pm on a Monday night. The menu is quite extensive with appetizers, salads, donburi bowls, sushi rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and sushi cones. I ordered the Tako sunomono appetizer. It was very tasty as well as refreshing with a vinegared salad of shredded carrots, cucumbers, vermicelli topped 3 slices of Tako. Then, I ordered the unagi, scallop, Albacore, hamachi, and Toro nigiri. All so fresh! The pieces of fish were huge! I finished my fabulous meal with a hamachi cone. While in the area the other weekend, my fiancé was in the mood to have sushi for dinner. Unfortunately the original sushi place I had wanted to try for years was now closed (unsure if it was because of renovations, redevelopment, or another reason). After searching on my Yelp app, we found ourselves at Sushi California. Once a pool hall, the establishment was now a hustling and bustling sushi place. Just off the main road with street parking and a small shared parking lot, I was surprised to enter and all the tables were already occupied. We had to wait a little time before a table was available, but I didn't mind. Sushi California has an extensive menu of all the different kinds of sushi, plus noodles and rice dishes. We were both tired and starting to get hungry, so I opted for the "lazy" order: Party Tray for Two. Had a generous assortment of standard sushi rolls (California, BC) and Nigiri (Salmon & Tuna) plus some fancier sushi choices, and was accompanied by nice and hot plain Udon noodles. The food was hearty and standard and it was just what we were looking for! The staff were all nice and friendly though I will say because it was so busy we had a little bit of trouble flagging someone down to bring us our bill. Hm.. where should I begin.. First, we made a reservation ahead of time but they made a mistake and gave our table to another group so we had to wait another 15 mins. Second. The waitress at the front seemed annoyed at us for her own mistake and had a bad attitude throughout our stay. Third, we ordered alcohol but that came out after we finished a few dishes and after we had reminded them. In addition, for the nigiris, the rice ratio to sashimi was 7:3. Not only was the rice portion too much, it would fall apart as soon as we tried to pick it up (both nigiri and roll). Even the sushi rice was not properly made...it's ironic how a sushi restaurant does not make sushi well. We have never seen a single restaurant make the edamame poorly. The restaurant managed to serve us the worst edamame we have ever tried. It was excessively salty and when we asked if it is usually served that way, all they could say is "yeah, our edamame usually comes out this salty". Not even a single apology was mentioned neither was an alternative offer made. Both the spicy tuna roll and our udon was salty. On top of it all, the presentation was not even nice. The only polite server was the head manager. Last but not least, the AC was blasting and it was so cold. I had to ask them to turn it off completely. I didn't know that Sushi California has a location in Surrey. Anyways, they never disappoint if you are looking for fresh, reliable, inexpensive and tasty Sushi. I came here and got the sushi and sashimi combo. B got the unagi roll, salmon roll and chicken kaarage. The chicken kaarage was a bit not wow. It was not crispy. The chicken was soft, juicy and tender inside but the outside was not crunchy at all. My sushi and sashimi combo was super tasty. The sashimi were super thick slices. The other stuff/ nigiri sushi were super tasty. Everything was fresh and that is a thumbs up. There are plenty of free parking in the area. I'm a fan of the sushi California/garden franchise. They just make quick and good rolls (and other dishes). Only 4 stars because I feel the prices have gone up and the portions have not (I know inflation and etc however they don't seem as generous anymore with their helpings). This location is well spaced out and staff are nice. My favourite still is their spicy tuna sashimi and their holla jalapeño roll. They're quite busy with take outs which is nice to see! read more

Taste okay but very basic, a little too basic so barely made it to be considered as a seafood sunomono. 2. Assorted tempura. Fresh with a nice light tempura batter, pretty good. 3 seafood udon, nice and hot soup just the way I like but the flavour could be better. 4. Deluxe assorted sashimi, fresh with a generous portion as always. 5. Salmon, ikura, kani, chopped scallops, tuna toro nigiris. Everything was fresh, the tuna toro was fresh and butter, yummy! 6, spider roll. Was okay but wish the sushi rice weren't so mushy. Overall, the food was of generous portions and everything was pretty fresh, however, wish the sushi rice were better and less mushy. This is an incredible sushi restaurant we had flown into the area to look at schools for my daughter and we eat here every single night. She has autism and eating disorders, but they were able to work around all of her anxieties to give her exactly what she wanted in the best arrangement possible at the cheapest rate possible as for me, I was dazzled by the profoundly generous slices of sashimi, fresh, crisp, salad with really delicious dressing that tasted like it was made there and of course California rolls. A solid spot for sushi near Guildford Town centre! I have been here a several times for lunch now and I'm always happy with the service as well as the food. My go to is the Tuna Battera, spicy, flavourful and melted in your mouth. Definitely a must get here. The price is high compared to other sushi spots in the area but the quality of their food is worth it. They don't do dine in at the moment because lf Covid. Wow...so much yummy food! Well we came here with the family after a memorial and hadn't had anything to eat all day. We got a seat right away and started to chow down. The menu is huge and the portions are generous. We had Ika Karage, Tako yaki, dynamite roll, the Saba battera was awesome...I can go on. We always order tooo much food. We ate it all! My favourites were the Battera and Tako yaki. I love when you can get tasty food for a decent price. There is more than one location but we were at the Surrey one. Always a go to place for cheap sushi. Big portions and good value. Their Surrey location has an even bigger dining room than the Vancouver one. They are always busy, even during COVID. You can see there are tons of people getting take out. One time it took us an hour wait, but the server warned us ahead of time, and we just headed over to Guildford mall. We ordered from this location the past weekend and I must say, I have never been so disappointed in an order. not only was the food inedible, we didn't receive soy sauce, wasabi, ginger, chopsticks or napkins. That seems pretty unacceptable ordering from a sushi place especially when we ordered extra ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce in the order notes. When we called them, they wouldn't even say hello and put as directly on hold for about 15 mins and then did nothing to solve the issue and were not kind or apologetic. Within 5 minutes of ordering, the sushi rolls came flying out to our table. Takoyaki - Decent, you can't mess this dish up. Prawn Tempura - The shrimp are on the smaller side. Just ok overall. Didn't help that it came super late after we finished our meal. Smoke Salmon Garlic Roll - good flavor with the shrimp, salmon and crispy garlic outside. Crunch Munch Roll - underwhelming salmon, only thing exciting was the crispy potato mounds on top. Double Spicy Tuna Roll - most disappointing where the middle is a big chunk of just spicy tasteless tuna. Sashimi has almost doubled in price in the last couple years. Consequently, as prices keep going up, I frequent this place less. This is our favourite spot in Surrey for sushi! The food always comes out fresh, and tastes amazing! We always order seared salmon or tuna nigiri (hint: it's not on the menu but they will seat anything for 10 cents!) with the wasabi on the side as they put it under the fish.
