The Omaha area has gotten some other power player sushi spots and I can no longer keep Hiro at the top. Still one of my favorites for fresh fish, but too many of the rolls are getting goopy. One of the things I do really like about Hiro is that they will give you happy hour prices on takeout, HOWEVER not if you order online which makes zero sense. They did not have it together the Saturday night we dined. I'm a repeat customer because the sushi and plates have been delicious. I'm not sure what clientele they were trying to please- but apparently not the diners. We reserved our table beforehand, ordered promptly but didn't get the sushi roles until 90 minutes passed and really only once we complained. Long into our ordeal I noticed they were telling other tables that there was an hour wait for rolls. Had we been informed of the same we'd have stuck to a noodle dish. We were told they were really busy with take out and delivery orders but really they let down those who came out to dine in. read more

The vegetable rolls here are decent, but not my favorite. Prices are about average for a sushi place. The atmosphere is nice, but the beer is a bit expensive. Overall, I would return to Hiro, and next time I will likely try one of the dinner entrees instead of sushi. read more

This was my favorite sushi restaurant when I lived in Omaha. It's right on par with some of the sushi restaurants in San Francisco and the Bay area. I believe if I'm not mistaken, the owner/head chef there was a sushi chef in Los Angeles for a number of years before coming to Omaha. Too bad to read the service has gone downhill. I used to frequent this location but I hadn't been here for dinner in several years. We stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night a few weeks ago. It was very busy but they take (and more importantly, honor) reservations and we were able to get right in. My sister and I both ordered a drink to start off our meal. I don't remember what specifically I ordered, but it was a seasonal drink made with apple cider and vodka. The drink was way too strong, but our waiter happily brought me extra apple cider to dilute the alcohol and it was pretty good after that. I also tried my sister's drink and it was good. For an appetizer we ordered the crab rangoons. They were good, but not great, and the portions were pretty small. All entrees are served with soup or salad and they have a signature carrot-ginger dressing which I LOVE. For my meal I ordered the Vegetable Tempura Dinner. It used to be my favorite entree here but I was a little disappointed by it this time (granted it could have just been an off night). They do have an awesome variety of vegetables in this dish but the flavor was a little lacking. My sister ordered the Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass. It was a small portion but she said it was one of the best dishes she had ever had (I tried it and it was exceptional). The atmosphere is very nice. This place is very popular so the restaurant is pretty crowded and loud. We arrived early for our reservation and were unable to get a drink at the bar because it was so crowded (being popular is usually a good sign, though). The food here is sort of pricey and based on my recent visit I am not sure all the entrees are worth the cost (although the Chilean Sea Bass definitely was). I have been here for happy hour several times and the food has been pretty good and they have many reasonably priced options. I will definitely be back for happy hour but I will probably be saving dinner visits for special occasions. read more

I came here for lunch and I would put Hiro 88 behind Umami, Ponzu, Okinawa and Blue in terms of sushi. My only gripe was that the service was inattentive even though they weren't busy. The server actually had the balls to say that he didn't like the specialty roll I chose. For the record, the sushi was good but nothing special. The last time a server did that to me was at the Brazen Head where she said that the Dubb Linn Stew was bad...Servers don't always have the highest I.Q. My boyfriend and I chose to eat here for dinner last night and for the most part it was very good. We were seated right away and got our drinks and appetizer quickly. Our server was great and attentive. We got the shishito peppers which are so tasty. My boyfriend ordered a couple sushi rolls and the salmon belly for his meal. He liked the rolls and the salmon belly nigiri was to die for. So fresh and tender. It's a must try. I also love their salad dressings, which I tried for the first time yesterday. Our server suggested I mix the two options (sesame, and ginger carrot) together and I was glad he suggested it. I ordered the unagi don which I've had at other restaurants many times, it's one of my favorites. Unfortunately this one I think was either a bit over cooked or just not prepared correctly because the bones were very hard and not pleasant to eat at all. I brought this up to our server who spoke to someone, then told me I should try to eat around it. I thought that was odd. After trying to pick out the bones I eventually gave up and just ate some of the rice. It was not offered to be replaced by something else or comped which was frustrating. We unfortunately paid $20 for a couple bites of rice. Bummer! Overall we usually have good experiences at this location. We may be back but I'm a little bit leary now. I've had nothing but amazing experiences with the downtown location, so I assumed i would have just as great of a time out west. Boy was I wrong. I came in today to order a little bit of food for carry out. As I stood in front of the hostess stand looking at the menu, the hosts continued their previous conversation -- which is no problem at all. However, at the end of one girl's story, the other girl said "what the f***" and then said "what was her name? F*** her. She can't order food here." When I did put my order in, that same host had me sit at the bar to wait. Again, not an issue, perhaps I could have been offered a water while I waited but no big deal there. Anyway, the food I ordered wasn't spectacular. Nothing wrong with it, I suppose, but having eaten at the DT location at least 100 times, I'm really disappointed with my order. I got the Cali roll and the PB Chicken, which for a total of $18 leaves me feeling a bit dejected. Just really bland food. The food easily could have made up for my experience at the door, but nope, not today! read more

I went during Happy Hour and it made me exceptionally happy. Hiro had a good selection of items on the HH Menu. I had the spicy bloody mary (Husker something or another) and it really hit my spiciness needs. I also opted in for so heated sushi. I had the Hiro Crunch and the Wasabi Stinger. My favorite was the Hiro Crunch. It was a warm roll that had been battered and fried. It was perfect. Service was great. We had a 1 year old with us and he was very focused on making sure the baby and us girls were happy. The atmosphere was a bit more intimate than other sushi joints during HH. It was a nice change up and I always have a good experience when I go to Hiro. read more

Both of my rolls were decent, as was the garlic edemame and the service from the female bartender. I had a rainbow roll and a Las Vegas roll and I was satisfied with both. However, a short Mexican employee with a Mohawk and a company shirt left the men's bathroom without washing his hands. I instantly called him out on it and he just laughed it off and left the bathroom. Then I saw him pouring water, handling food and interacting with customers. He then passed by the bar and I think he got word of my conversations with the bartender. With that being said, he looked at me like a tough guy multiple times as he was gathering glasses and sent a hostile message to me personally. My #1 favorite sushi restaurant is a place in Boston called Fugakyu. On my review, I complimented it on using cucumber as an alternative to wrap maki, and wondered when other sushi restaurants would start incorporating that trend. If you ask people in Omaha about where to get sushi, they will mention Blue or Sakura Bana (previously Sushi Ichiban), but not Hiro, which is bad for you, but good for those of us that consider Hiro a top notch sushi joint. They have a tremendous variety of rolls and sashimi, and the menu has something for everyone. I would recommend going at 10:00 pm on Saturdays for sushi happy hour. I don't understand how this place has so many positive reviews. Sorry but that farm raised salmon they're serving doesn't constitute as sushi in my world . Most of the food being served is either fried and/or covered in thick, goopy sauces. My sashimi plate was incredibly chewy. It was chewy due to the fact that my white tuna had a visible sinew (a piece of tough fibrous tissue). It's unacceptable to serve fish with sinew at a sushi restaurant. The sushi rolls were poorly wrapped. If you are into rolls with a lot of sauce and tempura in it to mask the fish, then this is the place for you! Sushi should not sit heavy in your stomach. After going here a few times I have to say that I have not had a bad meal here. I normally order the small sashimi platter and that gets me drooling. It's about $20-$25 and probably should be shared but what the hell.... Not ready to dive right into a big plate of raw fish and octopus? Try the California Special rolls. What's special about them? They have a slice of heaven (Unagi) on them. If you cringe just hearing about eating eel, you really need to suck it up and stop being a baby. Trust me.... You will not be disappointed!!! (Also great is the Crunchy Blue at Blue Sushi, they have eel sauce on them) They have a pretty large selection of entrees, pages for both Chinese and Japanese. They also have a decent looking saki list. I say decent looking because I really haven't had it enough to know what is good and what is bad. I have tried a few of my fellow diners entrees (fellow diners as in the people I'm with, not the table next to me) and I have to say that everything I have tried has been great. This is perhaps the most expensive sushi restaurant in town, but is also perhaps the best. Hey, you get what you pay for. I like the simple, clean lines of the place. I've never had a problem with service. I've never experienced un-fresh fish, a problem I've seen elsewhere in town. The sushi and sashimi are the freshest I've had in Omaha. The toro (fatty tuna) sashimi is particularly wonderful, though pricey; each a little mouthful of heaven. One reviewer suggested this is a Chinese restaurant with sushi. I would suggest the opposite, that this is a full sushi restaurant that serves Chinese food. I admit I have never tried the Chinese food. The sushi and Japanese dishes are far too good; I never seem to get around to trying anything else. read more

This is my favorite place to eat for sushi. Their food dishes are decent. If you want to eat Japanese food entrees I would recommend trying Sushi Yakiniku Boy (across from Oak View Mall, by Old Chicago) or the Sakura Bana (on W. Dodge road across from Crossroads Mall). I would recommend sticking to the appetizers, side dishes, sushi and drinks. Come for lunch, dinner, and/or happy hour (it's at night, I forgot what time it starts, so call to be sure). My first sushi experience in Omaha and it wasn't a positive one. Food: Had four rolls, Spicy Tuna, Soft Shell Crab, Rainbow, Shrimp Tempura (They had different names at Hiro, but you get the point). The rolls all tasted the same, almost greasy. The fish was not bad quality, but not as tasty as you would expect in a top notch sushi restaurant. Atmosphere: Modern and cozy. No complaints. There is no better sushi in Omaha. Everything from a simple spicy tuna roll to the most complicated custom rolls are perfectly executed. The rolls are always nice and tight. The rice is always perfectly cooked. The ingredients are fresh and tasty. I have never had bland food at Hiro. In fact I often have to taste the wasabi plain, because I love it, but I can't bring myself to spoil the sushi with it. Hiro also has excellent Chinese food for those who don't enjoy sushi. Their orange chicken is amazing. In fact, their Chinese menu offers the second best Chinese food in Omaha after P.F. Chang's. I've always had good service at Hiro too. Although we tend to go at off peak times so that might make a difference. My single complaint is that their hours suck. We tend to be out and about in the afternoon and they aren't open from 2pm - 5pm. Otherwise we'd eat there a lot more. read more

We arrived at 7:15pm on a Wednesday night to find : The service was slow, though our waiter was very friendly and attentive -- we suspect it was the kitchen and the sushi chef at fault. It took about 40 minutes to get our entrees (peanut butter chicken and sesame chicken, both plain with rice) after receiving our soup and salad. One sushi roll (Hiro crunch roll) took nearly 30 minutes to receive, barely beating our meals to the table. The food was on par or below what you would get from take-out Chinese. The hot-and-sour soup was neither hot or sour, the peanut butter chicken was woefully bland, and the sesame chicken lacked any personality for being $13/plate. The atmosphere, while elegant, was a let down after the classy entryway. All-in-all, this restaurant has good sushi and nice staff. However, it would be wise to revamp their other menu if they want to charge $10-$30 for appetizers and entrees that are currently unworthy of mention. read more

I love Hiro so hard. As a disclaimer: I'm not much of a seafood eater. The extent of my seafood eating is usually cooked maki rolls, so there isn't much I can say about their sashimi or nigiri (I've heard from credible sources that Hiro does an awesome job). That being said, I enjoy eating here: the ambiance, service, and quality of food is just noteworthy. Also, something that newbies to Hiro (if there are any left!) need to know: although Hiro is known and respected for their sushi, one CANNOT overlook their amazing Chinese menu. You've never had lo mein until you try theirs. You've never known the potential of sesame chicken until you have tried Hiros. (repeat for each other menu item . . . ) Hiro is where I usually take all my out-of-town guests. They are shocked that something so perfect is located in Omaha. I couldn't believe it. I ordered a dragon roll and the unagi had so many bones in it that it looked like there was a mohawk. I asked the waiter about it, he apologized and checked with the chef. I was then told that this sometimes happens, when I said the roll was inedible and I didn't want to pay for it (something I have never done before in my life), I was told that since the roll was fine, I would have to pay for it. I said I was happy to pay the $14, but that I would never return and they would lose a customer for life for just $14. I won't go back and have told anyone who will listen about this terrible experience. read more
