I went with my family to this restaurant today and have been there several times in the past. I ordered a small plate salmon, which was small indeed. They did not use the belly of the salmon but more so the thinnest piece possible. The first one that was brought out was overcooked and burned it . The second one, the replacement, was undercooked and did not have any seasoning on it. They charge $11 for it and there was no customer service even after I addressed it with the manager. In the past, we have had good experiences at this restaurant. However, today was unacceptable and no movement by management to make it right. read more

Now Hiro 88 is probably one of the restaurants I'm super excited to review as I haven't been here in a long while and finally have a new and refreshed memory of it for you guys. I've never been disappointed by this restaurant. Even while not being a huge sushi enjoyer(it's a consistency thing I swear!) there are sure to be rolls that even bring sushi newbies some comfort in this definitely different and new experience. My personal favorite is the Husker Roll as it's not exactly true sushi(it's beef, but also delicious) nori is definitely something to kind of get a little taste of more and more as you go and this roll really tows the line of American and with an authentic backbone with Nebraskan flavors. I personally had the Broccoli Beef and Hot and Sour Soup and absolutely loved it and you will too if you enjoy more earthy flavors in your meals. Not pictured is the crab rangoon that are filled are absolutely to the brim of what the wonton wrapper can hold and the consistency is wonderfully creamy. The only complaint now is that I can't go back to a cheap rangoon because it simply cannot compete. It's comes with a sweet and sour sauce but I prefer mine with a little soy sauce. The gentleman Gage that served my table was extremely professional, very thorough with insuring our order was correct and always kept our waters full. All in all 5/5 read more

One of our favorite sushi joints! I guess by "our" I mean mine for the sushi portion and my husband's for the Chinese offerings. It's a win-win situation! There is a large variety of sushi and it's always fresh and delicious although too many to select favorites. Whatever mood I'm in, they have a roll (or two or three) for it. Our Chinese favorites include (in order of awesomeness) Yin's Chicken, Peanut Butter Chicken, Sesame Chicken. Crab Rangoon is a must. We love coming on Sunday because it's all day Happy Hour. The dining room is good sized with a back room that takes overflow on busier nights. The bar has ample seating although we've never bellied up before. I do wish they had a patio though. We don't live anywhere near this location but make the trek when we're feeling like some Asian cuisine. Reservations are accepted through Open Table. read more

I almost gave Hiro 88 three stars, but couldn't do it. I've eaten sashimi at many, many restaurants. I had high hopes, but the sashimi tonight was not great. Service was fantastic. The salad with carrot ginger dressing was very good. I could have licked the bowl. When the sashimi arrived, the waiter introduced the fish, which I appreciated. Tonight's combo included striped sea bass, tuna, salmon, halibut and octopus. The highlight was the octopus. Octopus is chewy by nature, but the flavor overshadowed that fact and each piece was a delight. None of the rest of the fish wowed me. None melted in my mouth. The deep red tuna was dense, as usual, and not great. I will say this cut of tuna is never exceptional, so I wasn't surprised. The halibut didn't have much flavor, the salmon didn't have the mouthfeel I expect. I had high hopes for the striped sea bass, but again, it was not outstanding in any way. Add to that the price for 14 pieces, $27, and it was a disappointment. I've paid less for phenomenal sashimi in San Francisco. read more

All day happy hour is a good thing on Sundays. There are various bento boxes that you can do for lunch mixing sushi with various other Japanese entrees (tempura, teriyaki beef or chicken) etc, or just sushi and apps all day long. I have also tried some of the more expensive entrees for dinner on various other occasions and they are pretty good too. Other than Sushi Japan (my pick for authentic and delicious sushi in Omaha), Blue and Hiro are my favorite budget-yet-quality spots in Omaha, especially during the happy hour periods. The ambiance is nice and the staff is usually friendly. On our last visit, I was a little disappointed with the authenticity of the teriyaki beef and chicken- it was sort of cardboard-ish and I didnt really like the flavor. I still enojyed the sushi and the gyoza as well as the tempura. Overall, a great place to eat sushi, although I would say not the most authentic Japanese food I have tried. Again, it's Omaha so the fact that they're even trying is a huge plus. read more

I love Hiro's reverse Happy Hour and used to go on almost a weekly basis. Let me also say I've never been disappointed with the food. Service, however, is another story. It seems that it's either really awesome or really awful. I can't remember all the details, but last year I came to a 'final straw' type of moment and wrote a letter to the management - to which I never heard a response from. Things like servers not knowing items on the menu, lousy bar service, etc would make me shy away from returning to a restaurant, normally. But the food and atmosphere at Hiro are definitely exceptional. Even with the lackluster service I've experienced here I'm still giving it 4 stars. I'd highly recommend the Hiro Crunch and Husker Roll as well. Their edamame is also great. It's been suggested that I rephrase my previous comment about the server "refusing to split the check". I understand that it's the manager's policy not to split the check for Happy Hour. But that wasn't always a rule. One week, we came in and were told 'we don't do that', after having the server split the check for us the week before. No, "sorry we don't do that anymore" or any explanation... that was my issue. So, no, they don't split the HH check for anyone. read more

Though the policy is posted, the waitress did not provide a paper copy of the bill, only an electronic screen conducive to using only a credit card. Best sushi in Omaha! We are from California so we had endless sushi options when we lived there. Coming to Nebraska, our options are limited. We have tried 90% of the sushi places here and Hiro 88 is our #1 favorite for size, price, quality and service. We would go during happy hour and get rolls for $5. The sweet chili crab is our favorite! Side note, I did call and see if happy hour prices are offered for to go as well and they said no. Happy hour prices are dine in only, even during the covid-19 pandemic. Which, I didn't think was cool at all, a lot of us can't dine in due to our health and I wish they would offer the happy hour prices to all regardless of dining in or take out. read more

This place is pretty decent. A friend of mine made reservations ahead of time and arrived ten minutes early. They had a table ready for us despite the fact it was super busy. While I don't mind sitting at a 2-top, one thing I really didn't like was the seating arrangement at the front of the restaurant. We were seated in an area I can beat describe as a wide hallway. There are half booth/chairs on one side and then two 2-top tables against the other side. The issue came in that the sun was setting and it flares directly into the patio door and against the wall. The glare was ridiculously blinding, so owner, take note- get some blinds for that patio door. My poor friend spent half the meal leaning to one side so my head would block the glare. As far as food goes, they were definitely on point. I had the scallop sushi and it was pretty good. We split the kung pao Shrimp and that was very good. Our waitress was excellent and attentive, without being on top of us. I asked for two items throughout the meal and despite catering to a late party beside us, she was on top of it. The last time i visited Omaha, my friend too me to Blue (?) and it was terrible. This was definitely a great improvement! read more

I've never had Japanese before, so this was an adventure. For my first Japanese place, I have to say that I'm impressed. Definitely was a good introduction into that type of food. I came for the noodle dishes, so I was happy to see that they served Yakisoba and Lo Mein. They also have a ton of sushi options. Any of the noodle dishes came with a soup or salad as an appetizer. Service was fantastic. I was quickly helped by a waitress, and our water drinks were kept very full the entire visit. Dirty plates were quickly cleared, and our order was taken promptly and quickly. The check was also dealt with very quickly. Impressive staffing. For anyone that is nervous about understanding people well enough to place orders, everybody was easy to understand or happy and seemed nonplussed to repeat what they had said. Again, super friendly service. Their soup options were good. The Miso soup was really good. I'm actually craving some today now too. It was a generous portion (about a cup and a half, I think?), and it was brought hot (but warm enough to chill with a couple blows) and still was warm by the time I finished it. I had the Chicken Yakisoba. It was pretty good. I was surprised by how sweet it was, and so was everyone else in my party. They said they've never had a sweet-tasting Yakisoba. It didn't taste bad, but I think I would have preferred a less oiled and sweet taste. It was still quite good, though, and it was piled with healthy veggies such as mushrooms, carrots, sprouts, and more. Everything was nicely steamed and yummy to eat. Prices were a bit higher than I was expecting, but it seemed like we were definitely paying for the quality. Because of the higher prices, I'm not sure I would make this a regular eating establishment, but they definitely seemed to provite a level of service and taste that matched the prices they were asking for. NOTE: There is posted signage outside the door about proper dressage. They explicitly prohibit any sleeveless shirts. I was worried I was underdressed, but most people were dressed in upstanding semi-casual. T-shirts with nice jeans. No ripped clothing or anything like that, but it didn't seem to be super strict about any particular dress code. Would definitely come back. read more

Hiro is my GO TO restaurant in Omaha. The sushi is great, I personally love the Mongolian Beef dish, and the Crab Rangoon ... AMAZING, maybe the best I've ever had. I've never had a meal that has missed here. It's so disappointing to see people bombing it in reviews because of a bad server or because they had to wait. I really loved this place. I loved the lights and the bar had a great atmosphere to it as well. I went for lunch, and they had some great prices for lunch specials. I got the bento box with two options. It comes with soup or salad and depending on if you get the two or three option with different food. For the two box option it's $10, and for the three box option it's $12.00. I opted for the Sweet Chili Crab Sushi and the Teriyaki Salmon. The Teriyaki salmon was the best salmon I have ever had while dining out. It had the best teriyaki sauce, and it flaked right off the skin; all I left was the skin. I did like the sushi, but it had way too much cream cheese. Overall, I liked the atmosphere, food and prices. I have a feeling I will be coming back for lunch more than I should be! read more

Good food, strong drinks. The wait staff has always been friendly. Reasonable prices. Warning to gluten-intolerant people: their gluten free items are not gluten free. I've tried a couple different 'gluten free versions' off of their menu and have had an allergic reaction every time. Not uncommon for restaurants to falsely advertise this. I'm guessing they use the same oil to cook all of their items, so it results in cross contamination. Definitely stay away if you have Celiac. read more

Absolutely never again and let me explain why. NH and I arrived about 545pm, we were meeting some friends for what was supposed to be a lovely dinner. Happy hour ended at 6pm, so we opened our ticket at 550pm with a few starters while we waited for our company to arrive. The friends arrived just as the apps came to the table. That was fine. Our server comes back and takes the order and it almost never seen again. Time has past and we noticed smaller tables have been seated, served and billed as we still wait patiently for our dinner. We start looking about for our server.. nope.. no where to be found. NH gets up and goes to the hostess desk to ask to speak to the MOD (Manager on Duty if you are unfamiliar with the term). She says she send someone right over. Some short guy in a button down shirt comes over and says Hi Guys. NH starts to explain the situation and our frustration level should have been abundantly clear. Here is where I get my knickers in a twist. Button down guy doesn't identify himself or his title so we have NO IDEA who we are talking to, no apology, empathy or assurance of anything, and his flippant answer of "Well, we had two big parties come in and your ticket is next. They should be plating it now.. 30 seconds.." And he runs off. Sure, the food comes out and I don't think anyone at the table could tell you if it was good or not as we were all rather displeased with the very apparent lack of the most basic elements of customer service. Our server could have come to the table to let us know the kitchen was backed up, Button Down guy could have apologized. The whole thing -could- have been handled differently. What was never answered was if the kitchen was so in the weeds how were other tables, who were seated AFTER us, served and billed before us? We paid the bill in full, we tipped our server because the kitchen isn't her fault but make no mistake, that is $150 we are never getting back and Hiro 88 is never getting us back. read more

No. I cannot recommend Hiro if you are looking for a restaurant that one could be proud to recommend. The decor is old, table is worn out and approaching dingy. It was fun to see the wait staff on their phone when I would have ordered another drink. When we ordered our meals, table of 3, the last meal arrived after all the appetizers and the other meals were already eaten. They need fresh management and a purpose of their existence. To my surprise I have never reviewed this Hiro location after enjoying it for at least 15 years. We used to come here for happy hour which turned into dinner and sometimes even reverse happy hour. Some of my favorites on the menu are Milton's chicken, Mongolian beef, Asian short rib, Salmon belly, scallops, spicy edamame, Gyoza, and Scallion pancake. The whole time I was in Omaha, I wanted to try Omahan Chinese food (I love Americanized Chinese food). But was surprised by the following facts when I went into Hiro's. Bombshell #1: You can order Chinese food at... a sushi restaurant. I had the Milton's Chicken and it was a good stir-fry containing chicken breast, red bell peppers, napa cabbage, asparagus, and shiitake mushrooms. Bombshell #2: A classy ambiance Asian restaurant that's not P.F. Chang's? That exists? (Yes, yes. P.F. Chang's really isn't THAT classy, but I'm really only familiar with dives) Bombshell #3: Beef sushi (Husker Roll)? And it's actually yummy? Yes, yes. Sushi for white people, but it's oh, so delicious. Bombshell #4: Delicious cocktails at a Chinese restaurant? This just gets weirder and weirder. I highly recommend the Raspberry Wisp. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Omaha after Sushi Japan Yakiniku Boy (http://www.yelp.com/biz/sushi-japan-yakiniku-boy-omaha). I like its modern design and open kitchen. Avoid dinner and go for lunch because it's less crowded and more relaxing. Like a kid in a candy store, I need to have the Husker roll ($7.95) every time. It has beef tempura, asparagus stem, cream cheese, and mango sauce--doesn't that make your mouth water? The Firecracker roll ($10.95) is great-tasting as well and beautiful enough to be in the Louvre Museum. The best item on the menu is surprisingly the Mongolian Beef ($8.25). The dish is so balanced in flavor and texture; I can't imagine being tired of the sauce in my life. Hiro Sushi is great ticket for Japanese fare. Even if it were in Boston or San Francisco, I think it would do very well. read more

I am so sad to post this. So disappointed with Hiro 88. I used to go there all the time. I go to Hiro 88 on Mother's Day and have the WORST service ever! Water glasses stayed empty for 20 min, meals were supposed to come with soup or salad, neither came. Then, I ask for the manager and he comes over w an attitude and did not provide customer service. Then I ask for his manager's number and he's says "what, you want my Mommy and Daddy's number, we don't give that out". On top of all of this, Hiro 88 usually has all day happy hour on Sundays, but for some reason on Mother's Day, they aren't doing happy hour! This is the first time I've ever been to a restaurant that has an actual menu for happy hr. Anyway, we got mojitos and the rolls were priced at a really reasonable price which made us order more. We will not be ordering from HIRO every again! Did a takeout order. Had to use Grub Hub because it doesn't give another choice. The ONLY WAY TO ORDER ONLINE FOR HIRO IS THROUGH GRUB HUB. THAT IS THE ONLY OPTION GIVEN IF YOU GO TO THEIR WEBSITE. They did not get our order. Our pick up time was 50 minutes from order placement. We went to get our order and low and behold, they didn't get it!! Whoopsie! So what did they do? Nothing! No apology. They just moved on to the next customer. So my husband showed them the receipt and a screen shot of our credit card statement showing that we had been charged. Their response? YEAH THAT JUST HAPPENS SOMETIMES WITH GRUB HUB...... And that was it!!! No apology. No attempt to make things right. Just an offer to put in an expedited order and he could wait for it. So he asked to talk to a manager. Same response. My husband put in our order AGAIN and proceeded to wait ANOTHER 20 minutes on top of the 50 minutes he had already waited to get our food. Unbelievable. So I called. The manager at least apologized and stated that is was their error. He acknowledged that Grub Hub had also screwed up a bunch of Mother's Day orders for them and they were trying to get rid of Grub Hub. I asked why they still use Grub Hub and he said they were contractually obligated to use them. He said they could not make any changes to their website to inform customers not to use Grub Hub. Working for a small business myself and having helped build a website I know that this is not true. It can easily be done. He just doesn't care enough to find out or get help with this. IT SHOULD BE HIRO COMPANY POLICY TO COMP SOMETHING (AT MINIMUM) WHEN THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE THEY KNOW IT IS HAPPENING!! Good grief it's not rocket science! He is the one bearing the brunt of the customer dissatisfaction and he's not asking his management, WTF???!! Anyway.... they made no effort to make up for this error that THEY ADMIT AND KNOW IS HAPPENING REGULARLY! Nothing comped, no gift card offered for the inconvenience that the manager ADMITTED it was their fault!!!!! They know this is happening and they DON'T CARE! No attempt to make it right. So clearly they don't care about retaining or gaining customers. Clearly. Customers do not matter. They have surely taken a financial hit during this pandemic and yet, nobody is concerned about losing customers for the ONE METHOD OF ORDERING THAT IS/WAS ALLOWED DURING LOCKDOWN!!
