I came in earlier this week for a large party and we were celebrating my 30th birthday. Our family gathered into an already pre-set table. It was nice and private on one side of the restaurant. We were joined by many of our family, friends, and also their kids. Our server, James greeted us with a smile and asked us if we've been in before. As this was some of our guests first visit, he took the time to go over the menu with us and explain some of his favorite dishes. He also informed us that it was the first day that a new service system had been installed and apologized if there were to be any delays or errors in service. After his intro shpeel, he gathered drink orders and brought kids cups of water to our child diners. The adults ordered wine and sake bombs. They were all very pleased. He said he loved the cinco de mayo roll, and he was right, it really does taste like ceviche! Others got Chinese dinners. The food came out fast and all of our orders were without error. He checked back in a timely manner and made sure each of us were enjoying our meals and brought prompt refills. At the end of service, he surprised me with a delicious chocolate cake. Boy, I'm telling you, it was one of the best that I've had. It even had a little note on it that made it extra special. |Happy Hour| I loved this visit. I was exploring downtown last night with a few friends. A few of us were feeling hungry and I remembered that Hiro had happy hour all day on Sundays. We walked in around 6:00 and there was a 45 minute wait. They snagged one of our numbers for their system so we could receive a text when our table was almost ready. We went and walked around Hollywood Candy, just down the block for those 45 minutes while we waited. The place is beautiful, dark- but you can still see clearly. We ordered from the Happy Hour Menu which includes variations of sushi, appetizers and other fish dishes. I kicked it off with a $2 sweet and sour soup. The soup was good, but nothing stood out to me. Next came Crab Rangoon and Egg Rolls. The waiter missed one of our orders of Egg Rolls and so I had to wait a few extra minutes, but, it wasn't on the bill and I'll take that deal anyway. I had ordered the jalapeño bacon crab Rangoon and it was fantastic. I traded for a regular Rangoon at our table and may have enjoyed that better. The jalapeño Rangoon didn't have any kick from the jalapeños but the crust was great for dipping in the sweet and sour sauce and the Rangoon center was mouth watering! The egg rolls were good, but I think it's pretty hard to make eggs rolls really good. We split a the Mochi at the end and I loved it! I had Mochi in little Tokyo when I was in LA and that was alright, but I really liked what Hiro has going on! I appreciate when Mochi! It's chewy, but you're not going to choke on it and I think that the green tea was probably my favorite. With the Egg rolls taken off - the bill was $12 for a full plate of Rangoon, Sweet and Sour Soup and a dish of Mochi that wasn't priced for Happy Hour. Overrated and fell well below expectation. Some locals recommended this place and I gave Hiro a shot, but I wasn't impressed at all. Service was very slow. If it wasn't for our friendly and apologetic waitress, we may have just walked out. It took about 10-15 minutes just to order our drinks and 10 minutes later my drink came out, but my friend's soda was never delivered. It ended up being about 30 minutes between ordering a Coke and actually receiving it. My mojito was far too sweet and weak. How about the food? The vegetarian selection is poor and that's putting it lightly. In the vegetable section of the menu, one plate has beef, one has chicken and a third has eggs. Only tofu with vegetables was vegan. When it came out and I tried it, I was very disappointed. Soft, silken tofu that wasn't cooked at all. The plate overall was lukewarm and the sauce lacked flavor. A $13 dish that could have been replicated with more flavor for $4. My friend had some assorted sushi and she seemed indifferent about the food, neither thrilled nor upset. Going back to drinks, they didn't have sake glasses. Really? This caused a huge stir for other guests and escalated to an argument with the manager. I'm not sure how a Japanese place of this level and prestige doesn't have proper drinkware for sake. Prices were what you'd expect for a higher-end Japanese restaurant, generally $15-20 for entrees and about 10 bucks for a drink. Overpriced given the quality for sure. I have been a fan of the original Hiro Sushi on 129th and Maple for 4+ years. When they opened their trendier Hiiro 88 location in the old market, I could not be happier (this means everyone gets to drink and walk/cab home since we all live nearby, an no one has to be the DD) the quality of the food is the same, and the ambiance is very very nice. The happy hour times are generous and readily available. Visit their website for the most recent updates on that. Hiro 88 is the type of place I frequent a 2-5 times a month, so obviously I am a fan. I've frequented Hiro 88 at this location a couple times now. There's a lot of great sushi options in Omaha and this is one of them. They do happy hour 3-6:30pm Monday - Friday and 3-6pm Saturday. On Sunday it's all day. Reverse happy hour 10pm-12am Friday and Saturday. So plenty of opportunity to take advantage of their happy hour deals which includes drinks and food. We went last night for happy hour- got 4 alcoholic drinks, 2 appetizers and 2 sushi rolls for around $50. Pretty reasonable prices if you ask me - especially in the Old Market area. The food quality is good - nice and fresh. I will say they could do a better job with social distancing with their inside dining - the restaurant got pretty packed at one point. They do require masks when you enter though and there's a sign stating this. Plenty of outdoor patio seating as well. read more

This used to be one of our favorite spots, but the service and the food has gone downhill. Last time we visited I got one of my favorites Brussel sprouts, they were so over grown they looked and tasted like stems. Fast forward to tonight, I ordered take out. I am an out of town visitor and frequent Hiro88 about once a month during business travels. I don't make many reviews- however the service I received from Shane was the best. He's a friendly bartender, great attitude, and went above and beyond with our food selection and drink service. I would recommend getting the steamed gyoza here as they are packed with a lot of flavor. The Asian short ribs, wasabi stinger, west coast rolls were excellent as well. A popular sushi place in downtown Omaha that most people frequent late at night for their Reverse Happy Hour Menu (10PM-Closing). I've probably come only once or twice during regular hours, but man is it worth it during happy hour. The sushi is pretty decent. It is tasty but could be better. My favorite things to order are the Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon, Negi Hamachi and Rainbow Roll. Another favorite of mine is the Hamachi Kama, just be sure to ask for an extra bowl of rice with it! I usually come with my friends during Reverse Happy Hour and we all order ($7.50) sake bombs. Included in a sake bomb is a 25oz can of Kirin Ichiban Beer and an 8oz bottle of sake with a plastic cup. To just hang out with friends, enjoy a drink and have a great time, this is the place! I've been thoroughly alienated by the posting of signs advising that they will now charge customers for processing a credit card if we use one. Yes, it's "just" a 3.5% fee. But it's rude. It's unwelcoming. Look up the definition of hospitality, folks. If I ever do decide to go back, I will visit my bank so I can pay my bill in quarters. During my career as a counselor, I was told that if I had to provide an interpreter for clients, I could not refuse to see them nor charge them the cost for the interpreter, even if the cost was above what I was being paid for the session. Disappointed on Mother's Day, we usually love Hiro 88 but today was not the case. The food wasn't bad, but they didn't have their usual Sunday all day happy hour because it was Mother's Day, which was just really crappy. I understand you will have more people today and get to make more money without the happy hour, but it sucked to walk up to the restaurant expecting that (since that has always been our experience) and find out. Also, it really sucks that you are now charged extra to use a credit card. This place isn't cheap, and our bill was over $100, which we just don't carry in cash on the regular. I'm completely blown away by the unbelievable rudeness of the server we had at our last visit. Not only were several items brought to our table that we didn't order, the server was full of unprofessional comments and snapped at several guests when asked the simplest of questions... Like what happened to what was actually ordered. On more than one occasion, plates were dropped onto the table before she made snide comments and disappeared back to the kitchen. It was clear she did not care about professionalism or giving a good experience because she knew the 20% gratuity was already being added to our bill. I hate giving bad reviews. Stopped in for a late dinner around 8p on a business trip. Sat for awhile before greeted and I had already decided. Asked if they had a veggie tempura appetizer and I was told they did, so I ordered that, along with their two popular rolls: Husker and Wasabi stinger. The tempura was not very good...over battered and greasy. It was actually a shrimp tempura appetizer with veggies - a couple broccoli and asparagus spears, but mostly sweet potatoes and onion. The batter and oil overwhelmed and you couldn't taste the shrimp (D). Unfortunately, the theme carried over into the sushi rolls. The Husker roll was 'supposedly' tempura beef tenderloin with asparagus and cream cheese (I subbed avocado), but all you can taste is the deep fried batter wrapped around over cooked meat. I liked the presentation for the Wasabi stinger roll - tempura shrimp, sub avocado for cream cheese, jalapeño and wasabi cream sauce with shredded crab mix on top - but similar to the Husker roll, all I tasted was deep fried, blandness. No jalapeño evident. So food and service was a D, pricing was a B as fair to better than average. I would skip this place. read more

Service was very lacking. All the did was give excuses on why the were slow or unable to do something. My wife asked several times for a glass for her beer, it finally was produced after at least 3 times. We waited over 15 minutes for our first drinks. We asked for forks and supposedly they had to wash forks so we had to have some. It is very sad that they rather make excuses that actually perform. Will not be back! There had been a considerable decline in the quality of service and quality of food that Hiro 88, Old Market offers its customers. I had a very poor experience a few months ago with my friends where we had horrible service waited 45 minutes for menu and had a manager take up for the server because they were tired. However, I really loved this place and was hoping that maybe the former general manager Milton would straighten things out, but no. After arriving for happy hour, which is all day Sunday; I placed my order, to include Toro Salmon Sashimi ( the salmon belly). I was given regular salmon. Which the salmon belly cost more than regular salmon. When I informed the server, she had someone (clearly not a manager) come over. He tried to insult my intelligence and tell me that Toro meant Tuna. After living in Japan for four years. I think I would be able to understand that first, "Maguro" is "Tuna" and not Toro. If that wasn't insulting enough, the real manager comes over and tries to convince me they cut the "skin" off the salmon. This only demonstrates that not only is he uninformed, but his sushi chef is as well. I showed him images from the internet so he would be aware that toro sashimi includes the underbelly, a thin layer of fat, not the skin he thought it was. I feel bad for customers who may not know the difference and get stuck paying more money for a product they don't receive. In the end, I'm saddened that what used to be the best sushi in Nebraska has become like many others... Just another place in the Midwest that serves raw fish. I ordered my go to drink & sushi roll. As I looked at the many different bottles at the bar, I noticed some interesting Sake bottles! If you want to try a variety of Sake here is the place to try it! It wasn't long & our sushi rolls were served. The rice is better here than most places & the seafood is fresh! I liked it so much, 2 days later I went to Hiro 88 on 129th West Maple! This time was Sunday Happy Hour & I tried a new drink-Purple Kimono that was a twist on a new cranberry vodka drink that I love! Sake Bombs are only $2 so you have to have at least 1 of those! The sushi place I frequent the most for their reverse happy hour, as a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever come during their regular hours! It starts at 10pm M-Sat and all day happy hour on Sundays. They have a large variety of options on their reverse happy hour menu which is great because there's bound to be something for everyone. I usually get their spicy tuna roll because I love the crunch the tempura crisps provide. I've also tried other rolls like Crazy Horse, Cinco de Mayo, and Hiro's Crunch, but I don't care too much for the extra ingredients they put into them. The real star of this place has got to be their sake bombs. For $7.50 you get a 25 oz can of Kirin and 8 oz bottle of sake to make about 7 sake bombs (we fill the tiny cup inside the bigger cup up to the rim with sake and submerge it in Kirin). That's a lot of sake bombs, depending how big of a group you're sharing them among. This spot has become a favorite among my friends for happy hour. Hiro's creates a perfect atmosphere to hang out and cheers the night away with sake bombs. The service also never fails to deliver each time I come, so although I don't care much for the sushi here, Hiro's will always be the place to offer good vibes and great times. read more

What an awesome recent experience at this fun spot downtown. I've been here several times an Hiro definitely deserves its props for one of the best places to get sushi in town. I think we had one of everything the other night w some friends an let me tell you the rolls did not disappoint. We added chicken teriyaki an I believe a non gmo chicken delight an the crisp on the chicken was absolutely amazing.
