Hutong was truly a surprise! The reviews simply do not do this place justice! They turned classic rolls into a whole experience! It was amazing! We tried 3 signature rolls and had some much fun with them! The volcano roll had the most amazing sauce on top mixed with Kani and cucumber! And the mango tango roll was so beautiful I was afraid to eat it. I got some extra eel sauce for some side dipping because I can't not have it and it was so good!! We definitely grabbed some of the best rolls, but might not be the place if you don't like cream cheese because it's in almost every roll. Admittedly I'm a sushi snob, and I very rarely veer far from my go-to... BUT when you're on duty, and La Vista isn't that far away, you swing by Hutong before the night gets crazy. For some reason, tofu covered with their herbal chive sauce sounded REALLY GOOD tonight, and it never disappoints when I snag some. Crunchy edges (in a good way, duh), great flavor, and sorta makes your eyes roll back cause they're that good; AND they don't cause bubble guts Picked up a "safe" roll (on duty and such..) for a little more sustenance. Grabbed the California Roll (cause it's safe, duh) and a Hutoang Roll to split. Both very good! Love the happy hour here. High-quality sushi in a great atmosphere for a reasonable price is difficult to find, but Hutong is a hidden gem.

Volcano roll: great flavor, excellent presentation. Would order two next time. Las Vegas was fine but basic - good flavor but nothing crazy. Could have used a sauce (any sauce) But what surprised was the short ribs as small plate. Great grilled char and flavor. They are small but so good. There were some small cartilage pieces so be aware but that was not shocking at that price point. Just wish inside was spruced up. Tables and chairs and booths are dated. This review is for the sushi take out, which is not my favorite thus far. Papillion has limited pickings for sushi- there is Hutong, Red Hibachi, Wild Rice, and everything else is LaVista or Bellevue or into Omaha. That being said, I prefer the sushi at Umami (Bellevue), Yoshitomo (Benson), Sushi Japan (Millard) and even the local chains like Blue Sushi and Hiro88 (Downtown and out West O) over Hutong. The fish in my order did not seem super fresh, and the sushi rice seasoning was too sweet and not vinegary enough. The pricing here is moderate, with my bill being around $30 for 3 rolls (1 specialty and 2 regular "plain" ones). The packing of the sushi and the items included in the take out like utensils, garnishes and sauces were all fine. Maybe I will try to return here sometimes to dine in, but it's not at the top of my list. read more

Was hesitant to go considering I'm very picky, but my friend dragged me anyways, and holy shit do I regret not having tried one of the numerous other times he invited me, we got into the restaurant at around 8:30 thinking it didn't close until 9:30. The waitress let us know that they do close the dining room in 30 minutes I immediately felt bad for coming in late but the waitress was genuinely kind and didn't rush us as 9:00 came and went, I know personally the frustration when people come in right before close because it prohibits closing tasks but the waitress didn't let it show if she even was frustrated, the food was top notch as well but the service was impeccable, forgot to tip this time but will be returning and will leave a sizable tip! read more

Even though they were apprehensive to make some changes, they were willing to make the changes because we do not like cream cheese or fried sushi. Hutong Sushi Grill provides quality Nigiri, Sashimi, and rolls at an affordable price. The staff is always friendly and inviting, but can sometimes be difficult to make converse with. They have normal seating and a small bar where you can watch the chef prepare your meal. They have Happy Hour daily from 2:00pm until 5:00pm. The Happy Hour menu is very small, only including eight rolls, drinks, and a few appetizers. I've always had a pleasant experience dining here, and I highly recommend it to any Sushi enthusiasts in the area. read more

Dropping off a box at UPS...which is right next door. My co-worker says, "Have you been to Hutong?" So off we go. First off - this is a Japanese restaurant. No fusion...just Japanese. We run into a couple of Japanese guys as we walk into the restaurant. That's typically a good sign! We ordered the Chicken Teriaki, and a side of spring rolls and gyoza. I think I'm a gyoza subject matter expert (SME) having lived in Japan back in the day. The waiter brings us salad, miso soup and the appetizers as a warm up. The salad and miso were as expected. Tasty and good starters. The spring rolls were average as was the gyoza. I wasn't really a fan in general. However, the teriyaki chicken was amazing. Sweet but not General Tso sweet. And served with steamed rice on a light bed of either cabbage or kelp, with a light sesame sauce. The chicken was really quite amazing and I would definitely go back. They have a happy hour from 2-5 and I think we are going to check that out sometime in the future. We were having lunch, so we skipped the cocktails. The 'organization' frowns on the use of cocktails as a lunch appetizer. Plus, my colleague and I tend to say things we regret after a few cocktails. Hutong, or what I like to call Hooty-Tang Pooty-Tang, is another sliced raw fish Japanese wannabe sushi establishment located in a happy slappy cookie cutter La Vista plaza. For some reason, the font of Hutong caused me to pre-judge this place and deem it yet another sushi place in Omaha... oh sorry... La Vista. But since my Asian mother taught me never to judge a white person by the way they hold chopsticks, I decided to give HTPT a chance. Let me start with the good - The place surprisingly has a nice ambiance. Semi-dark neon Shanghai ambiance matched by a reaaaaaaally Asian staff. Like.... Rearry Asian... Service was very attentive and it was super cute how our waitress kept saying "soosee". Also, the presentation of food was at first glance fancy smancy. Lemon rabbits, heart-shaped and coloured sushi (soosee) and flower sashimi... Wait.... Flower sashimi?? I will get to that soon... Let's dive into the not so good sharr we? The food is, as my father would say, ......... Yeah, he doesn't say anything when food is mediocre. We got pork gyoza, avocado eggroll, Hawaii ceviches (yes plural) and stuffed prawn. The gyoza was supposed to be pan fried, but for sure it was deep fat fried. The ceviche(s) were probably the only thing I liked, but it's nothing more than spicy sashimi and the stuffed prawn was confusing. Confusing like I wasn't sure how to eat it. I'm posting a picture so you can tell me if you get it... The menu is limited which surprisingly increased my decision time. The lack of promising dishes were so few that I found myself trying to select the lesser of two evirs. In the end, I decided that if I'm at a soosee place, I'm gonna have me some soosee and no substitutions! (or MSGs) I'm actually not a fan of white people sushi, so I stuck with a plain salmon roll and an order of white albacore sashimi. At first glance, I was giddy to see that the rice/fish ratio in my roll was highly in favor of fish! More mercury for my body - yay!!! However, the salmon just tasted really fishy almost like tuna. I know it sounds weird to say salmon is fishy, but trust me... this was like licking the side of an uncleaned fish tank. And the worst part was that wasabi was in the roll. To the credit of Hutong, most sushi places will put wasabi in the "normal" rolls, like tuna or salmon and it won't be noted on the menu. But that wasn't what rocked the sushi boat for me. Let's go back to the sashimi flower. I took a picture of it... can you see how it is made? The flower is really pretty. I hate to reveal my complete dorkiness, but it reminded me of the Ginzuishou... google it if you too are a fellow geek... anyway, can you see what is holding the fish up maintaining the beautiful Ginzuishou shape? If you can't, I'll tell you. Lemon slices. Hmmmm... Citrus and fish can go together, but if my memory serves correct, I think citrus and raw fish makes for something else................................ oh yeah. Ceviche!!! You can't put citrus on raw fish or the acid will cook the fish!! Food FAIL! I wasn't upset by this, but it for sure ruined the sashimi. So my final thoughts... NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEXT! read more

We had a nice waiter, knowledgeable. We only had Happy hour items. The sushi rolls were typical rolls, tasted like good buffet rolls. The Calamari was good. Everything was ok. Nothing was special, or even good enough to share about. Nothing was memorable. I got an orchid on my plate- that was the most memorable part. Will we be back? Probably not. My husband and I have been here 3 times so far and had great experiences. We always come for lunch and order either the 2 roll lunch or the 3 roll lunch. With the lunches they serve miso soup and a strange, but good, salad. The servers generally pace the food well although once they kinda piled it all on the table at once. The Las Vegas, shrimp tempura and Hotel California rolls are our favorites. Service is always prompt and the people are nice. But the star is the sushi which was as good as it gets. Being from Hawaii, it's been hard to find sushi grade tuna in Omaha, but Hutong's was delicious! The restaurant was filled to capacity and there were tons of take out orders to go. Really great customer service. Here's the thing.. We live in the middle of the country. That's right. I have no ocean in my back yard. Recognizing this, I know better than to expect truly amazing sushi in Nebraska. Accept it, guys! That said, I like this place. Excellent service. Really decent happy hour menu (Happy hour at 2? That's when I eat lunch, anyway!) The caterpillar roll always makes me smile, and the HuTong gift packs (their version of a Rangoon) is made with real crab, not krab! Very reasonably priced, clean, with a pretty extensive menu. I was pleasantly surprised that the sushi restaurant down the street from where I live is great. The nigiri is always good and the rolls have yet to disappoint. If you're looking for the best of the best in Omaha when it comes to sushi, check out Blue or Hiro, but for a very good price point I have yet to be disappointed after many, many visits.
