Hiro Sushi is hard to miss when you're on Hastings. It is right on the border of Vancouver and Burnaby on Boundary Road, underneath the apartment complex. We both got the "All Day Super Special", which was $10.95 for your choice of three items and a free miso soup. Small chicken teriyaki don, $10.95 combo special: For a "small" size, this was not small at all! I was expecting maybe just one of those small regular rice bowls, but this bowl was like the size of a soup noodle bowl. What a pleasant surprise! Salmon & avocado roll, $10.95 combo special: Alongside the chicken teriyaki don, I chose the salmon & avocado roll. It was an excellent choice. There was a great amount of avocado and it was perfectly ripe. The salmon tasted average but I really enjoyed the creaminess and good amount of the avocado. Phew! Since there was so much food, we took many breaks in between and left really satisfied and full. I was pleasantly surprised at Hiro, and would gladly come back for their combos again. read more

I like coming here because i like their combos; you can choose your appetizer, sushi and rice/noodles, for 10$ you get a good variety of food. Their quality is not bad for the price you pay. Service is hit and miss, sometimes they forget to bring your setting etc. Street parking is available. read more

Nothing superb, but totally enough to satisfy your usual sushi cravings! Following similar concepts to Sushi Garden and Sushi California, the place does cheap rolls and generous portions of fish! Something unique about Hiro is that they have a combo menu where you can mix and match your own items for a set price. read more

It's an okay sushi restaurant. There wasn't anything that stood out too much and the menu has all the regular items that everywhere else has, and the portions and taste are average. There was basically no other customer at the time but at least it was fast. Got the special $10.50 with mini salmon don, 3pc tuna nigiri and spicy salmon cone. read more

This feels like a little neighborhood corner takeout with a couple of tables. The service was excellent, and the food was delicious!!! I had the pork pot stickers (they call them something different), and the teriyaki beef with sticky rice and vegetables.... outstanding! read more

I like Hiro sushi and while I understand that some people need a nicey-nicey waitress, I really don't care. I grew up going to local Chinese food restaurants where you're lucky if they don't throw your food down so hard it splatters everywhere before they walk off as if you're inconveniencing them for being there. That said, while they have some waitstaff that are a bit more cold than friendly I've never had any other issue with any of them. They do their job and that's fine by me. Food is typically solid here, lots of nice options and food has always been fresh when we've dined in or taken out (we live across the street). The daily special is a good deal for 13 dollars and the prices I'd say are on the good side of fair. If you're looking for fancy, this isn't it, but if you want a decent meal for a good price you won't be disappointed. read more

After living in the area for nearly two years, I am giving this place an upgrade to four stars. We get take out from here at least once a week and they never seem to disappoint. We usually get the same things most the time and they are always consistent. Some variation of chopped scallop roll (scallops are large), nigitoro roll (largest nigitoro roll), California roll (not the biggest fan of this roll but they make the best one in town that I always have to order it), black dragon roll (really delicious specialty roll) and salmon nigiri (generous portions). They also do salmon aburi which a nice change sometimes. Overall I would recommend it here if you're nearby. read more

Hiro Sushi is to die for. The salmon bento box was so big that my leftovers had leftovers, and it was delicious. The staff are great and don't mind when I hang out a bit and read after, which is nice. Good prices, nice decor (with a big, kind of weird mural), I can recommend with jazz hands. read more

It was a dark and rainy day the Thursday my colleague Mulder and I went into the restaurant. The decor inside was cheerful--a large mural of a woman wandering into a jungle village helped ease the gloom that hung over us that fateful day. She looked... hopeful. As we sat down at the table I immediately noticed the waitress across the room; she looked forlorn, as if her lover had just moved away. Noting this I put on a pleasant smile when she walked over to our table. Nothing's worse than dealing with irate customers when your heart is already sore. Mulder did not notice her thousand yard gaze. He was so wrapped up in our current case that he pt his tie on backwards when he came into the office this morning, so I knew there was no use trying to redirect his attention. Mulder ordered miso soup, nothing else. He doesn't like eating much while he's working. I ordered the same, with a california roll and yam roll. Same as always. The constant rain makes you a creature of habit. Our soup arrived swiftly. Evidently our waitress was bored, but still quite efficient. That's when things got weird. When the bowls hit the table I took a moment to admire the paste slowly separating out from the water. It reminded me of slick oil coalescing with food coloring. A ballet of soybeans and leek, graceful and nutritious. Mulder absently lifted the spoon to his mouth, nearly spilling soup down his front in the process. As he put the soup in his mouth the bowl moved six inches to the right on the table. Normally, he would jump at this, raving about ghosts or unknown forces. But he still didn't notice. I was thankful. Then my bowl did the same. Something was definitely not right in that sushi restaurant. Ghosts? Doubtful. It seemed like the bowl was simply expanding from the heat of the soup. Ghosts aren't real anyway. Mulder's bowl moved again. This time he looked down in shock. "Scully, did you see that?" "Yes, Mulder. The bowls are expanding, causing them to shift along the table. It's no big deal." "You're always like this, Scully, why don't you learn to think outside the box for a minute! There are things happening out there that we just can't explain. This is definitely a paranormal phenomenon." Before I could pick apart Mulder's poor logic with my own scathing intellect our food arrived. It was fairly tasty, and cheap too. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this place. It is definitely a hidden gem in Burnaby. We go here at least once a week. The menu is huge and there are lots of vegetarian options. The sushi is always fresh and the prices are very low considering the quality of the food. Service is always fast and we have never had a bad experience dining here. The restaurant is never busy so there has never be a wait for a table. If you are in North Burnaby you definitely need to try this place out. We usually park around the corner on the street and have never had an issue with parking. read more

Hiro Sushi is close and convenient for me, and their sushi has been good in my experience. They have an extensive menu with a wide range of specialty rolls. My favorite is the black dragon roll. They are so rude here. I waited patiently at the front for 4-5 minutes while every person working there ignored me as I tried to place a takeout order. Finally after having to raise my voice to get their attention, the person who was standing at the till the whole time finally moved out of the way and another server took my order. My sushi requests are never that complicated. Perhaps this is why I had a better experience than most here in the prep department. I did get just a basic avocado and cucumber roll. The service was a bit slow, especially when there was barely anyone there at the time of ordering. At least the server was polite. They were quick to give my bill. Don't order from this place! I placed a delivery order and told it will be delivered within 45mins, I called to check on the order status after a hour later and the women on the phone was rude and told me to just wait. The food finally got delivered after 1.5hr later, and the delivery guy demanded for a tip when we refused to tip for the horrible service. read more

Was pretty stoked to have a Japanese place open up right across the street from where I work. Its a super convenient location to service those in the area because you either have to go at least 10 blocks west of Hastings to get some sushi, or 3-4 blocks east of Hastings. Seeing that there were many failed restaurants in that exact spot, there was a bit of hesitance, with a touch of excitement to see if this place fends. I went with three other co workers. They all got bento boxes- Chicken, unagi, and salmon, while I opted for the Temaki combo (3 cones- spicy nigiri, unagi, and something else...) No complaints from 2/3 of my co workers about their food, they thought it was good, however, the odd one of them got sick later on that night (not sure if sushi was to blame...) I had no complaints about my temakis except that the rice was really, really starchy and sticky. Over all, I think this place is okay, and serves up okay food for what they charge. The convenience factor is there, decent tasting food, and good portions for prices- hence, 3 stars. I will be back when I need a quick sushi fix! read more

Been looking for a similar Sushi restaurant to replace Akira Sushi which has had ownership changes and has never been the same. Finally stumbled onto this location. I'm not sure if its family owned but it doesn't have the same warm neighborhood family atmosphere, although I'm sure many local neighbors visit the location. Its located at a very busy intersection. Street parking is limited, albeit there is a parkcade but its not reliable and often is closed. Onto the menu/food. The menu is vast and has lots of selections. The dinner special $9.95 has you choose 3 items from a list of 20 or so choices. that seemed to be a great value. The food is consistent and pretty good for the value. Greeted by a friendly server/hostess as I enter the place. It's pretty empty here and its about a little past 12 noon. Pretty extensive menu. The place is decorated simply. Dark furniture and comfy leather booths. Big space and lots of generous spacing between tables. I decide to order the appetizer sashimi (5 pieces - 3 Salmon and two tuna). And also order the lunch special chicken teriyaki bento box which comes with a nice garden salad, rice, 6 large pieces of California rolls and four pieces of tempura and a slice of orange. Take a look at the picture. I received a nice bowl of miso soup which tasted pretty good but I wonder if it was one of those packaged and just add hot water type. Now you've probably heard of the phrase too much of anything is not good right? Well I think it would apply with this meal. Especially when it comes to the sashimi. They were I'd say about an inch thick and 3-4 inches long. The tuna was ok but the salmon was a rough go and tough to eat because it wasn't tender. I had to use two hands folks!!!! WTF?! get what you pay for right? Here's a suggestion, cut those pieces in half and call it a generous appetizer sashimi (10 pieces for the price of 5) Yup. The chicken teriyaki was ok just ok. The California roll was middle of the road. The tempura was heavily battered and not light at all. The vegetables were not fresh. I wanted to like this meal but I couldn't. Excellent Sushi/Japanese restaurant that just opened up in the Burnaby Heights area near boundary road. The house special rolls are huge, loaded with lots of meat and held together by a thin layer of rice, as it should be. Too many times have I seen sushi restaurants make rolls filled with too much rice but here you really get your money's worth! The inside of the restaurant is clean, updated, and staff is friendly. The only thing that bothered me, which is very minor, is for them to put crab meat inside their dynamite roll. Other than that, top-notch sushi! read more

We decided to try the place out because the other sushi restaurant we wanted to go was too busy. We were very impressed. Their rolls and sashmi are big, tasted fresh and the price was cheap. Food taste great and you can tell they did not put too much msg in the food because your throat is not dry after. It is now one of our fav sushi joints. Too bad it is far from where we live, otherwise we would dine here more often. read more

Out of curiosity (and because my regular sushi place was too full), I came to eat here for the first time. My initial impression when walking in was that it was a very clean place. It's a new restaurant so all the furniture is new too. The wall painting was very strange for a Japanese restaurant. There was only one other table of people at dinner time on a Friday, so it was very quiet. I know the location housed two previously failed restaurants, as this location isn't that great. The food quality was better than I expected. The salmon and tuna sashimi was nicer quality than many other local places (fatty and melts in your mouth). The rolls were well made and they don't try to stuff the sushi was too much rice or avocado as filler. They could use some more work with their sauces to add flavor. The only downside to this place is that the Chinese owners/employees are oblivious to some of their bad habits. 1. As I walked up the stairs to the restaurant, one of the employees sat on a milk crate three feet away from the door and hocked up a big spitball onto the floor. Then he opened the door for us. What a delightful sight. 2. I think the place is family owned. At dinner time, all the chefs and waiters sat down at the same time and ate together at the middle table of the restaurant and chewed with their mouths open. One girl stayed behind the counter to watch over the guests. It's something you see in China often, but generally not acceptable in Canada. They should have an employee eating area that's out of sight of the customers. read more
