We were looking for a sushi spot near deer Lake and decided to try Makoto. We thought the lunch bentos were such a good deal! It was quiet inside when we arrived but more ppl trickled in by the time we started eating. I liked their Alaska roll but thought the dynamite roll was a little small. The chicken yakiudon was a decent sized dish but I found the udon too oily. This is a nice neighborhood sushi place to stop by for some affordable and tasty Japanese eats.

Been ages since we've been back to Makoto. Same Japanese husband and wife combo. We dropped in on an early Sunday (around 5:30pm). Mostly people coming in to pickup takeout. Nice that they had a heater on keeping things toasty inside. No more cheap $2.00 saba nigiri. - Assorted sashimi ($28.00 for 12) - three salmon, three tuna, two hokkigai, two tako and two tai. Salmon and the hokkigai were the best pieces. Good quality but on the thin side. - Futomaki ($7.00 for 5) - the sakur denbu (seasoned ground codfish) was not to my liking; sweet like sugar. My least favourite item that we ordered. - Umeshiso roll ($4.00) - love the touch of sour/tartness. - Negitoro roll ($4.00) - excellent. - Chopped scallop roll ($6.00) - mediocre. Too much rice, not much scallop. - Nigiri - two saba ($3.00 each), toro ($4.00), hamachi ($4.00) and tamago ($2.50). Everything was delicious but the saba nigiri is still the best thing to order. Makoto's remains a 3.5 star in my books.

They are currently only doing takeout orders. I would recommend calling ahead of time to order. The sushi chef makes the sushi, takes the orders and closing the sales. It can take a little while as they are quite short handed.I think the sushi chef is the owner as well and he is pretty friendly and chill guy. The food is pretty good for the price. We were amazed that they have ume shiso rolls. Not a lot of Japanese restaurants serve that. We ordered California roll, umeshiso roll, beef teriyaki roll, paradise roll and chicken yakisoba. We will come back for more :)

Tastes like Japan! The sushi rice was perfect. The tempura was fried perfectly crisp on the outside. Their tea is special and high quality and tasted so fragrant in flavour and aroma. The miso soup was one of the best I've had. Very fine tasting with real tofu bits and seaweed with fresh green onion. Tried the bento A and B and both the chicken and beef were juicy and went well with the steamed rice. The potato salad tasted like it was made from scratch, but was a little bland. Sushi rice was perfect and the sushi and sashimi were fresh and good. A solid standard Japanese restaurant.

The restaurant was empty and we had it to ourselves on a Wednesday night. It was perfect. We ordered and heard the fryer start up. Soon after our food was ready. So yummy and hot! This is just what we needed

Came here on a recommendation of a friend. Best method of restaurant hunting. If you aren't familiar with the area, you'd probably drive by without even noticing, as the adjacent businesses are non-food and therefore closed on weekends. Parking is available on the street out front. You may have to walk 50m or so if you're unlucky, but it's nothing bad. The interior looks a bit dated, but is still classy. I liked the wall decor. Plain, but tasteful. The restaurant is literally a mom and pop operation. The dad is the waiter/server, and the mom is the cook. They put a lot of effort and pride into their food, and it shows. Best of all, they are actually Japanese, so you know the food is going to be good. I had a chance to try a variety of pieces of sushi. The ingredients were fresh, which is always a good thing. There is a $10.50 lunch special combo where you choose 2 items off a list. The bento box combos are definitely more pricey at $10-13, and while the food is good, the quantity for the price leaves a bit to be desired. Fortunately, it does come with a bowl of rice, which does help to fill up the stomach. One last thing worth mentioning is that the salmon they use isn't farmed, which is nice. If you are in the area, this place is definitely worth checking out.

I said to myself when I first entered Makoto: "hmmm, a real hole in the wall sushi place!" because judging from outside and the interior it is so bland and not even fancy. Then my friend told me it is been here in the same location for over a decade and the chef is the owner... Well, maybe I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, I actually quite like to eat here, food is good, price not that cheap but still affordable. I didn't find the service slow at all (as other customers' comment in their review). There are quite a few other restaurants catering different tastes in the neighbourhood. I am pretty sure I shall return soon :)

She then left to let us peruse the menu. We took awhile to look so we were asked at once point if we were ready and we sis we needed a bit more time so the server was delightfully accommodating and said whenever we were ready to give a server a call. Later on when we were ready our order was taken by a male staff member. We ordered a decent amount. Miso cheese eggplant, chawan-mushi, fried fish collar served in some kind of broth, 8pc nigiri omakase, blue fin tuna&uni hand cone, another hand cone but I can't remember what was in it..wifey ordered it, vegetable tempura and a black truffle dynamite roll. The highlight for me was the black truffle dynamite roll, it's taste was perfect. The right amount of truffle used and not over powering like I've had at so many other venues. I was pleasantly surprised and delighted. It was smokey, earthy and tasted wonderful. The miso cheese eggplant was delicious, slightly salty from the miso and wonderfully roasted soft eggplant. The fish colar in broth was light and delicate, beautiful flavor and texture. Chawanmushi was soft and delicate, excellently flavored. The omakase which had fish from Japan was delicious, super fresh and masterfully prepared! The tempura came with a green tea seasalt which was different but very nice. For dessert we had the green tea tiramisu which was very tasty. The restaurant itself is small but cozy and wonderfully decorated. My wife and I had a wonderful meal and I would go back for special occasions.

We love the food. Gohan and the miso eggplant were our favorite; the kids menu is a boon too.read more

The food came out pretty quick and it was all very tasty. Oishi and Godzilla roll has a nice char flavour to it. My partner has come in to this spot a few times already and he has enjoyed his meals each time. He's taken out rolls before and they were still tasty after traveling 15 to 20 mins as well. Would come back , nothing too special but I would know I'd have a satisfying meal each time.

The homemade ponzu (lemony) sauce has a nice finish with thin sliced onions and veggies. The Engawa Arburi nigiri was recommended, and it was phenomenal. It is the 'fin edge' of flounder. Super delicate, with seared (arburi) flavor and melts in your mouth. Yum! The other highlight was the Wagyu beef cubes severed on stick. Two skewers 4 cubes each. The Wagyu was perfectly cooked. It melts in your mouth with every bite. We also enjoyed the 7 piece Omakase sushi set. The fish was very fresh and satiating. Love the lotus root chips garnishing. We loved everything we had but would likely skip the Omakase appetizer Platter. Perhaps we were spoiled by the hamachi carpaccio appetizer. We still enjoyed it but For the same price, we would prefer the sushi set. Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

Total 10 guests today. Looks like 4 more guests can be served for the maximum seating. The server came by when the course is served to explain each item. The appetizers have three dishes. The tempura is freshly made and hot. The cooked fish tastes a bit fishy to my likely. The chawanmushi is lukewarm which I wish to be hotter. It then follows by 8 nigiri sushi with brown rice - really like the texture and (small) portion of rice with each nigiri. Fresh ingredients. I asked for low sodium option however the first few nigiri is a bit too salty and I have notified the server so the chef can adjust immediately. I enjoy the Hokkaido uni nigiri the last smoked fish nigiri the most. The fresh crab and salmon roe rice and beef soba noodles at the end have a nice touch of finesse. There are a number of birthday celebrations and they asked for names to acknowledge and celebrate the birthdays. A little musical piano "performance" for the happy birthday song. Matcha green tea is served at the end to wrap up the omakase. Overall an enjoyable experience but not necessarily impressive as a Michelin 1 star restaurant. At this price point it's worth a try however not likely regular visit.
