My friend and I drove to Rochester from Buffalo and Syracuse, respectively, to visit Historic Houseparts and WOW did we love this place. There are four buildings full of salvage with real treasures stowed among it. Selection is refurbished hardware, antique parts, complete parts (mantels, doors, windows), parts with character (worn and torn), and sections of parts for fixing (trim, pipes). Great place if you're looking to build from the ground up or simply add character to your own home. This place was a gold mine and Jim was awesome. It's over an hour drive for us and we both see plenty of revisits in our futures. read more

Apparently they sell things on their site even though they don't have it in inventory. They took my money and charged my bard right away - but then they waited a few days to tell me it's not available for 4-5 months. They offered me an alternate color - for MORE money. A discount would have been suitable given this situation. They also did not offer me a refund! They offered me a different color for a higher proce - or to wait 5 months. That's crazy. I think they wait until you order, buy it from other companies, mark it up, and mail it to you. Better to just find these same products elsewhere. read more

For unique salvaged items or reproduction parts, Historic Houseparts is the best in the region! Some people scoff at the prices here, but when you consider how difficult some of their inventory is to find, you can see the value of their offerings. The domestic home stuff is in the sharp brick building, handles, lighting, knobs and smaller details. Around the corner in the out buildings is the big stuff, trim, moulding, pillars, doors, industrial artifacts and other rare pieces. The people who work here really know their stuff and work very hard to help you find exactly what you're looking for. This place has held it down on South Ave long before it was cool. Now that I have a wagon, I am even more inclined to start taking on the bigger projects. Sorry, wallet. read more

Don't buy anything from Historic Houseparts, at least not online. First they sold me just part of an antique doorbell - they left out the part that makes it ring and then told me that if I wanted that I'd have to pay $18 more - so I asked if I could send it back. Sure, they said. So I had to pay $14.50 to mail it back and then they didn't give me all my money back. They had to charge a 20% restocking fee, or something. Arrgh! Next time, I'll just buy from Amazon. It's all very nice to say that we should patronize small businesses but Amazon always sends you what you've ordered and not just part of it, and if you don't like it, you can send it back for free - no postage, no restocking fee. read more

The brackets I purchased don't match due to random curly cues missing bits and are covered in sharp and fuzzy, rough flange. The cast on these is the worst that I have ever seen. Between their restock fee and paying to send these back, I lose whether I keep them are not. If you order online- prepare to wait a long time and then be completely disappointed. (In all fairness, maybe they are overwhelmed with orders. However, if you are not going to ship out an in stock order for two weeks then communicate.) I would describe my brackets as pricey, low quality, unusable crap. read more

First and last time I will order from here. If you don't stock basic parts, stop taking orders. Also, engage with your customers, I could have gotten these elsewhere in this amount of time - and I am taking into account your own sites 7-10 day lead time. read more

I placed an online order with Historic Houseparts for some light fixtures. Though this wasn't made clear to me at the time that I ordered, some of the fixtures were not in stock. After waiting a couple of weeks and not getting any definitive information about when they might arrive, I cancelled the order (with Historic Houseparts' agreement). It is now coming up on 2 months and I have yet to receive a refund. While the company agrees that a refund is due and promises to issue one, they do not follow through with the actual money. If you think their prices will be competetive with your local Restore, this place isn't for you. If you don't mind paying extra for something that is pretty hard to find, or you realize that quality does cost money then keep reading my friend. We bought a 1910-1920 colonial revival in western ma in 2011. While most of the original details are in place, some less than desirable things were done. When we moved in we had pepto bismol colored louvered french doors. We promptly took them down and began the search for some new doors. We went to home depot and for new french doors that were solid wood it would cost over $1000 (and thats for some crap pine too), so my wife went to the internet and found an old pair of french doors at this store that came from a convent. They actually have writing at the top of the doors that is what the priests updated every year after blessing them. We paid $500 for the doors (something comparable built with todays materials would have easily cost $2000+) and I drove 5 hrs one way to pick up these beauties. True $500 isn't as cheap as a pair of doors would have been at our local Restore but good luck ever finding some this amazing. The store is also full of amazing light shades, chandeliers, door hardware, clawfut tubs, antique fireplace mantels, exterior columns exterior, etc... This place has everything, although they did say that they change inventory pretty quickly so if you're looking for a really popular/rare item you'll have to frequent their store often because they often sell these items before they even make it to their website. Definitely worth checking out. read more

I am "refreshing" my kitchen and found some great drawer/cabinet pulls at Historic Houseparts. I ordered them and then read thru the Yelp Reviews and was shocked by some of the very negative comments, especially about bad service and rudeness from the people who worked there. My experience with HH was easy, friendly, responsive, and helpful. They took care of my order (which apparently they went to a 3rd party for these particular drawer pulls) and answered questions by email in a timely manner. I gather it's a quirky, one-of-a-kind store which may be out of stock from time to time, but it seems like they have cool stuff you can't find in a home improvement store. For regular house needs at a better price, yes by all means, go to the big box stores, but for unusual or historic pieces, HH is a great resource. You may have to wait for your item but for something unusual or cool, it's worth it -- to me anyway. Big shout out to Courtney who was my Salesperson. Great job! Will definitely follow them and see what interesting stuff they get in. read more

I'm not sure why there are negative reviews. I ordered 4 shades online. While reproductions, I had looked everywhere for glass shades for a 3.25 fitter. Historic House parts in the only place I could find them. The shades fit perfectly and match the lighting fixture (my house is 150 years old and the fixture was originally gas). My only complaint is that their online inventory isn't as up to date as it could be (that's why not 5 stars). However, I called and the customer service rep was wonderful and the follow-up very good. Sometimes when I see negative reviews about businesses not being friendly, I wonder if it's the customer that has the problem- not the business. Historic House Parts is not as large of some competitors and their inventory is more limited that some other specialty antique/repo lighting providers but HHP has things that other business don't. They were a life-saver.....I would have needed to replace my light fixture had they not had the glass shades. read more

This business has had several owners going back 25 years. The current ones seems to focus on reproduction hardware, which is great if you want something that is fairly standard and has been produced for a long time. For example, I bought some new federal style drawer pulls here. So, it is easy to get a matched set. Besides hardware in their main building, they sell old hanging lamps and some plumbing parts. In an adjoining building they store salvaged house parts. Lots of claw foot bathtubs which mostly need restoration. Wooden trim of every variety, cast iron parts, radiators, etc.. It is very hard to search in this building as it is crammed and pretty dark. Prices at this store tend to be very high. Too high in my opinion. All-in-all I would recommend going to ReHouse on Ridge Road first if you are looking for original parts. Stuff is easier to find, much cheaper and better service. read more

I'm a frequent shopper at the bath shop at Historic Houseparts. The shop carries an eclectic line of soaps and body care products, as well as diffusers, bath supplies, and shaving supplies. The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful and if they don't have it, they will order it for you. I know when I buy my home, I will be returning here to look around for one-of-a-kind lighting fixtures and other fun things that you won't be able to find at big box stores and it makes me feel good to support a local business. read more

Last week we found an old but decent desk at a garage sale; it did not have a drawer pull (and the holes are 5" apart). We walked over to Historic House Parts, as we prefer to support neighborhood businesses when possible. The male clerk downstairs, did not greet us and sent us upstairs when we told him what we were looking for. The female clerk upstairs, without greeting us or budging or said we'd have to special order that item--that they had no 5" drawer pulls. I flipped through a basket of sale items right in front of her and found a nice brass drawer pull that was the perfect 5" size. I would have preferred a brushed silver, so I kept looking. The clerk snapped that she just checked the inventory and that was the only one in stock, so I should stop looking. Well, since I found one after she told us she had none, I wanted to keep looking through the basket. It was no trouble to her--no one else was in the whole store. We also wanted to buy a cleaning item from the 1st floor and I asked if I could pay for the brass drawer pull down- stairs. She said, "No, because he won't know that this is on sale," (even though it was marked in red as a sale price.) So we had to walk down the long dark creaky staircase, get the other item, and walk back up to pay and back down again to leave this hostile environment. In retrospect, I don't know why I continue to support them.We are in our 60's and my husband is recovering from surgery, so I was a bit taken aback at the clear unfriendliness of the people who work there. She rang us up and I thanked her (but wouldn't it be nice if she thanked me too--for my business? For purchasing something that she told me she definitely didn't have?) My friend who cleans our house buys leather and wood cleaners there so I mentioned this hostile experience to her and she said she likes products but absolutely hates shopping there because they are so incredibly rude. I ordered online January 14th, by the next day I had confirmation and my invoice stating my items would be shipped January 22nd. Two weeks later I still haven't received anything. Yesterday I called their number, was put on hold then hung up on. I called right back, got a different guy (Jeff) I asked if I was calling about my 'backordered' items, I was never told that my items were backordered. He said he'd contact the distributor and call me right back. He never did. I called this morning to cancel my order. The women I talked to pulled up my order and confirmed part of it was backordered, but not all. I never received any of the order. So I asked her to cancel the whole thing. She said they'd contact me if there was any issues doing so. After reading some of the other reviews this sounds like standard practice for them... wish I had gotten on Yelp sooner. The photo on Historic Houseparts' website of the picture rail hooks I purchased does not truly represent the shape very well, and it turns out that the hooks are entirely unusable. The customer service manager won't admit that the product is defective, so they won't pay for return shipping. Not only that, there is a 20% restock fee. What a a mistake it was to ever shop here. I think this place is the best in Rochester, even the northeast, for salvaged architectural items. They have tons of stuff. You could literally spend a weekend there and not see everything. If you're looking for high quality reproduction hardware they are hard to beat. The sales staff knows their chit and if they can't answer your question they'll find someone that can. Worst, rudest owners we have ever worked with. Many other places around town that have much better prices and treat their customers much better. They do not allow any negative reviews on their FB page, so it will appear like a great place. Feel very badly for their staff for having to put up with such awful, controlling owners. The staff person that helped us seemed to be in fear of the owners if they did something out of line and was not run past the owners first and the staff person shared that with us. They seem not to value the customers and I felt as they were watching me as if I was not going to pay for my item although I have been their at other times as a buying customer . I ordered 2 Windsor Hand Rails @ $18 each = $36 plus $9.75 shipping. They arrived and they were faulty. I called and was told the manufacturer said it was a casting error. I was also told that the entire box was faulty. I was told they would allow me to return them (which is not their policy). I sent the parts back. 2 refunds on paypal in the amount of $28 and .80cents. I called again and they told me they would not credit my shipping but would give back the restocking fee they held back. She also told me the hand rails were usable, just not perfect - so I paid $20 for shipping on a faulty product. She said her system was down and she could not tell me anything else about my order. I would suggest ordering from anywhere else in the world OTHER than this place. Not worth the time hassle and loss of money. TERRIBLE, just terrible. read more
