Jen is a wonderful baker (a breakfast bread pudding one day; mini churros another day), and each morning we had a varied and hearty breakfast that was delicious and well-balanced. The house itself is big and inviting with hip old timey jazz pipedor more modern-day chanteuses gently piped in. Enclosed porch for reading or just relaxing. Our room had a private porch, too. So much here. So many ways to really unwind. Walking around the grounds is inspiring. I ran into Derek a time or two who was relaxed but busy on the many projects that keep him focused here. The whole place looks perfect for a wedding, or a family gathering, or even a business get-away. Or, of course, just a simple, lowkey retreat. Lovely hidden (but easy to find) gem. Most concerning, there was visible black mold in the bathroom, which is a serious health and safety issue that should have been addressed before renting out the room. The WiFi was fast and reliable, but that's a small positive compared to the maintenance and cleanliness problems we encountered. Overall, I can't recommend this hotel given the mold issue alone, let alone the broken bed and non-functioning AC. Management needs to address these problems.

We didn't use any of the amenities but the hotel was in a decent location in terms of distance to point of interest. There was a tent popped up right behind the walkway to the marsh area though. If you just need a place to shut your eyes, this was a decent option.

So naturally we decided to take an impromptu road trip up the California coast on a holiday weekend with ZERO reservations. Yes. That was our brilliant plan. To be fair, we knew exactly what we were getting ourselves into. Hotel availability would be about as scarce as the leftovers back at home. But honestly? The adventure was the point. We ended up booking this hotel with a "standard room" while sitting in a restaurant eating dinner. My husband kept saying, "It's just one night. BOOK IT" and so I did. When we arrived, the woman at the front desk was incredibly kind and welcoming. She let us know they only had one room left and the bed was a full-size instead of a queen or king. I frowned and my husband gave me the universal exhausted husband look of, I truly do not care, I need sleep. The front desk agent even offered to let us look at the room first and said if we didn't like it, we could cancel with no penalty. That alone was appreciated. Now, I'm not going to lie the setup gave very classic roadside motel vibes. Open walkways, doors facing outside, the kind of place where someone could walk right up from the street to your room. I did my little internal cringe...but I knew Mr. Sleepy Pants wanted to sleep. We checked out the room, accepted our fate, and stayed. The room itself was actually very clean and comfortable. It had both a fridge and microwave, which was a nice surprise. I also asked for extra blankets because even at home in our king size bed we somehow fight like survivalists over blanket territory, and she happily gave us plenty. There was also a small concession area with snacks, which was convenient after a long drive. At the end of the day, if you're passing through and just need a clean, comfy place to sleep for the night, I honestly see nothing wrong with this property. And with the addition of the second sleeping quarters, we had access to another bathroom, which we didn't even know we needed until we had it. Big thank you to Pamela because this alone made our stay a 10/10 experience. The breakfast: the buffet had the best hot crispy potatoes of any hotel we have stayed, scrambled eggs, sausage, fruit, yogurt, bagels, muffins and breads, cereal, made to order hot foods, and coffee, juices, and even a soda fountain provided everything anyone could need. 20/10 breakfast just very busy. The pool: we wished it was warmer and it did not open at 8am the next day like posted. We waited for quite a while, closer to 9am but our kids had a blast once there. They supply towels on a rack. We did not partake in the happy hour nor the restaurant but I liked knowing they were available. The gift shop: convenient. The lady who helped us during the night was so helpful. She gave us a spoon set for our ice cream and packed everything for us in a bag. The next morning I returned to buy a mug and the lady did not offer to put it in anything so I carried it out and chose not to tip her because..."what service?" And then I stopped to ask her for a spoon to which she simply answered "no". I had gotten one the night before so I know they have them and I didn't appreciate that she was as about unhelpful as a flower pot. The gift shop also sells speciality--what I believe is starbucks--coffee and you're telling me you can't part with a spoon? It was a little before 9am on Friday June 12th, 2026 and I stand by my decision to not tip her. 1/5 just for her but our previous night experience was a 5/5 so I'm torn. The hotel did charge a $15 resort fee that they gave back to you as credit to use at the gift shop or on food and a $20/night parking fee but we always pay for parking when staying in Monterey so I think it's standard. Overall, great experience. My suggestions: the railings make me nervous. With a kid on the spectrum I worried about her and had to hold her when going to our room. Luckily we were only on the third floor, which also came in handy when the elevators were packed and we had to use the stairs. Additionally, someone needs to brief the gift shop staff on basic customer service and yes I am specifically pointing out the one lady from that morning whose name I don't even remember. But she was the only one there and I'm sure easy to single out. I thought about deducting a star due to our experience with her but I'm not going to let one person overshadow an otherwise great stay. Everyone else from the front desk to the breakfast staff to even the guy testing the pool PH was so friendly and pleasant. Add in the proximity to literally everything including the beach and we will most definitely be staying here again. We like to visit the area at least once a year and have yet to find a hotel we would return to.

The room was Embassy Suites standard, which means main bed room, the separate living room (with sofa bed for the girls), and a single bathroom and counter (with fridge and microwave) in between. There was plenty of room for all of us, and affording just the right degree of semi-privacy. We all slept well too. The only minor complaint was the multiple efforts to get extra coffee and glasses as our stay continued. There's also the observation that the base hotel room, includes a number of local and state tax add-ons, a $20 daily parking charge and a $15 destination fee. But for our party of 4, this was our best and most economical choice that I could figure out at the time.

Most folks recognize the Super 8 brand as budget lodging, this smallish property not an exception; but it's favorably located steps away from the Monterey Co. Fairgrounds. For this reason alone, the property's a winning choice considering the benefit of free guest parking and for not having to arrange transport to any events at the fairgrounds. Also favorably, you can typically park your car just outside your room door, or very close to it. Then, it's any easy 3-5 min. walk to the main entrance of the fairgrounds. Check in was a snap and the young desk lady was cheery & helpful. The smell of Curry spice simmering around dinner time permeated the property lol, so if you're a foodie, it may make you hungry, idk? (The owners/managers of the property live onsite). They've got mostly double beds here and a smaller # of rooms featuring double queens. I opted for the double queen set up, not fond of the double bed as I'm a larger dude. The rooms feature coffee, microwave, fridge, body wash + shampoo dispensers in the shower and a considerable cable TV line up. Comfy beds & adequate sheets. Most of the windows on this single level property with the exception of the bathroom sliders appear to be locked for security. Probably a good thing. As it wouldn't be terribly difficult for unauthorized street passerby to enter rooms otherwise. The shower heads have flow restrictors, meaning you have to extend your shower time a little to disperse with the soap. There's a barely-there "breakfast" each morning of packaged granola bars & coffee inside the reception lobby. And a Pepsi & ice machine just outside the office (ice free for guests). You could also hear the noise from the water pipes and the natural ambience of street activity surrounding the fairgrounds. The area is a direct flyover from jets coming & going from nearby Monterey Regional Airport at all hours. Overall, it was a successful stay with nary much to fault them on. The hospitality of staff tipped this review from a solid 4 to 5 stars for me. Good job Super 8 Monterey! No pool, but they have an area if weather is good, to sit out at tables, enjoy the air, great if your on a budget, but dont expect luxury.

They don't even really have a lobby,it's kind of just a walk up. The room designs are pretty bad,it's like the rooms were designed in the early 80s to make the rooms designed in the 70s jealous. Pillows sucked,comforters sucked,blankets sucked,mattress sucked-thank god I didn't have a black light to see what I was sleeping on. I felt like we for sure had a few sketchy people staying at the "Inn" at the same time as we were. I accidentally fell asleep with my golf clubs in the car and woke up thinking there was no way my clubs were going to be there in the morning. With all this negativity,I should say something positive----Let's see,at least they were cheap-pretty sure the room was under $120 for a night with 2 beds and midweek. No parking fee-that's another positive. In closing,this place worked out for us because it was just a bunch of old dudes hanging out trying to find a spot to sleep before the next round of golf began. So after driving 2 and a half hours, we decided to stop in Monterey and spend the night here even though we are going to be spending the night here again at the end of June. So glad that we got the opportunity to spend the night here because we were just worn out after having to not being able to find a place to park and go to the beach while we were in Pismo Beach but we kind of expected that due to it being Memorial Day. After we pulled into the parking lot, you can just tell that there were some renovations that had happened here because the Pool was no longer a Pool, it was now turned into a Dog Park. We walked into the Office to check in and the guy who was at the Office was very friendly and helped us get checked in. We then got our information to get into our Room and as soon as we walked in, let me tell you the Room was very clean and you could smell the cleanliness. We put our stuff down and then got settled and when we sat down on the bed, it was very comfortable, and welcoming. It was just so soft that I knew that I wouldnt have any problems falling asleep. As a matter of fact, after we got back from eating Dinner, I almost was just by sitting on the bed for 5 minutes. We got into the Shower and it had alot of pressure, the toilet flushed great and every where I looked it just sparkled with cleanliness. The TV, the Fridge and even the Chairs & Table was clean. This being our first time here, we were so impressed that we are even more excited that we will have the opportunity to come back here and stay again. As we fell asleep you could hear just ultimate silence and you would have no problems with falling asleep here. After waking up in the morning we checked out and had no problems with checking out. So over all I wish I could give this place a 10 star because for something that was cheaply priced, the experience, the comfort and the cleanliness was well worth it. This was, without exaggeration, the worst hotel experience I have ever had in my adult life, and I…read moretravel often. We actually left early because we felt uncomfortable staying there, which is something I have never done before. The owners and their family live on site, and the entire stay felt very uncomfortable and intrusive, especially because we were traveling with our dog. One evening when we returned from being out all day, we went back outside to grab a few things from our car and clean it out. Almost immediately, the owner's daughter came outside. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her point her phone camera directly toward us as if she was recording us. When I looked directly at her, she stopped and just stared. As soon as we went back into our room, she went back inside the house. The timing was not a coincidence, and it made us feel like we were being watched the entire time we were there. What made the situation worse is we are fairly certain someone entered our room while we were gone. When we came back, the toilet seat was left up, which is something neither my partner nor I do. We are both very sure about that. Nothing was missing, but the feeling that someone had entered our room without permission was extremely unsettling and felt like a complete violation of privacy. We wanted to address it with the owners, but after reading multiple reviews saying the owner becomes aggressive when people request refunds, we honestly felt intimidated and did not feel comfortable confronting them directly. We ended up calling BringFido and decided to leave early because we no longer felt comfortable staying on the property. Aside from the uncomfortable situation with the owners, the property itself is not well maintained. The floors in the room were very dirty, the parking lot is extremely small and very difficult to maneuver, and the walls are paper thin. When we first checked in, I thought it was strange that there were ear plugs sitting on the sink counter, but after the first night I understood why. You can hear absolutely everything. We could barely sleep because of noise through the walls. On the second day, we tried to take a nap and couldn't get comfortable because we could hear constant vacuuming and furniture being moved around through the walls. This was supposed to be a relaxing trip to Monterey, and instead we felt uncomfortable, watched, and unable to sleep. We left early and are now hoping we can get a refund. Do not stay here!!!!! This did not feel like a hotel -- it felt like we were being monitored while staying in a dirty, noisy motel. Easily the worst hotel experience I have ever had.
