I have come here 3 years in a row now, my friends and I rent a bunch of rooms, golf, rooms are clean, have a TV, fridge, They have made some upgrades, some of the rooms now have laminate floors. Owner and staff are on site, so always able to help if any issues. Its got 2 star rates , 2 star vibes, but it plays better than that. No pool, but they have an area if weather is good, to sit out at tables, enjoy the air, great if your on a budget, but dont expect luxury. read more

So I decided to join a bunch of old friends on their annual Monterey golf trip this year.Since I was the new guy on the trip,I just did whatever they did,no need to rock the boat. Ate wherever they ate,drank wherever they drank,stayed wherever they stayed. That's how I landed at Bayside Inn on N Fremont Street in Monterey. First of all,it's way far away from all the cool stuff that Monterey is famous for. I'm pretty sure they call this place an Inn because the owner was too cheap to pay for the extra letters to spell Motel on the front sign. They don't even really have a lobby,it's kind of just a walk up. The room designs are pretty bad,it's like the rooms were designed in the early 80s to make the rooms designed in the 70s jealous. Pillows sucked,comforters sucked,blankets sucked,mattress sucked-thank god I didn't have a black light to see what I was sleeping on. I felt like we for sure had a few sketchy people staying at the "Inn" at the same time as we were. I accidentally fell asleep with my golf clubs in the car and woke up thinking there was no way my clubs were going to be there in the morning. With all this negativity,I should say something positive----Let's see,at least they were cheap-pretty sure the room was under $120 for a night with 2 beds and midweek. No parking fee-that's another positive. In closing,this place worked out for us because it was just a bunch of old dudes hanging out trying to find a spot to sleep before the next round of golf began. I would never bring anyone I cared about to this place.Nobody should bring their wives-girlfriends-daughters-mothers-nieces-anyone that somebody would care about should never be brought to this place-it's truly low level in every way. read more

For the value this location was great. I would never pay above $90 for a room at the Bayside Inn. The location is convenient to jump onto the highway or drive to Fisherman's Warf. The problem with this property is parking is very limited and too compact. Meaning if you have a large truck or SUV they cannot accommodate a space for your vehicle. This would also include if you are someone who struggles to park between the lines, and expect to have your car keyed by another guest trying to find parking. As you can see in the images the doors the rooms are not very secure. We were lucky and had a personal security device to help secure the door. The other problem with the room is the bathroom there is no ventilation causing black mold to grow. You could open the bathroom window if you don't mind having the other guests watch as you shower. Protip you can use the hairdryer on low heat as a defogger for the mirror. This was very clean and the staff was kind. It also screams to be a boutique hotel but the overall quality would need to be greatly improved. If you are looking for an affordable location to stay in Monterey when this location is under $90.00 I would recommend a visit. read more

This place is a real dump that cost $230 per night midweek including taxes. It is so old that it still has old fashioned door keys. The knob was broken, and it was very difficult to lock. The room was small and cramped. The only way to open a suitcase was to place the suitcase on the bed. The furniture, what there was of it, was old and beat up. The mattress was lumpy, and the pillows were the worst that I have ever seen. The noise from traffic and airplanes was almost unbearable. There were no USB outlets, and the ice machine was broken. read more

I don't know why they got such a low score review we've been coming here for the past few years we stay in room 101 always get a corner spot. It's very clean, comfy, cozy and they meet your needs. Whatever you like; the gentleman in the office I don't know his name but he's very nice And professional and courteous I have no complaints at all. This is our little destination spot when we're in the area of Monterey it's not a fancy hotel but it's perfect for us. Close to many stores, restaurants, fast food you name it and the best part is it's only eight minutes away from Cannery Row and we use DoorDash when we don't want to go out. Everyone is friendly professional including housekeeping; They do an awesome job! Kudos. Any corner room is perfect. It's quiet! Sleeping with one eye open! Booked this place through Priceline. We called to ask about check in time and the clerk was rude. Paid 138.00 for two full-size beds. Decor is reminiscent of your dead grandmothers stained rejects. The "aroma" of the room is like walking into a mausoleum...like a dead person encapsulated into the walls...a cloud of odorous funk hovering like a blanket wafting over us. This place would make a great set for a horror film. The Bates Motel has nothing on this place. Tried to watch TV but batteries are dead. Booked a room on booking.com, the photos looked nothing like the photos, we walked in and the bed have ash burn marks as well as the night stand the bathroom door had a crack in it like someone punched the door and the WORST part the window had black mold ALL the way around!! The management is super nice. I don't know why everyone has put such bad reviews about the front desk man. He is always nice and smiles at you every time u see him. The housekeeping is excellent. Especially if you tip them everyday. They provide 2 granola bars and 2 bottles of water everyday. The rooms have carpet tho and u should not step on them barefoot. The beds are soft. I planned a weekend trip to Big Sur for my friend and I with the intention to basically hike as much as we could. Accommodation in the Big Sur area is quite pricey so I decided to pick a place in Monterey instead. As silly as this may sound, I chose this place because of the name. I obviously love Saved by the Bell. The other factor is that the surrounding inns were places I'd stayed at before (albeit in other cities), so I wanted to try a different spot. Our 2 night stay went great. We were assigned Room 108 which was a corner room. The space was quite roomy with 2 queens, a mini fridge, microwave, and big bathroom. Check in went smoothly. Neal was very pleasant. He had a great smile and was very friendly. The grounds were kept clean and it wasn't ever too noisy which was a plus. Here are some suggestions I do have: The fridge had a fishy smell when we opened it. It never really went away. I decided to shower it with body spray which helped a little. You might want to put a box of baking soda inside to fix that. The bathroom had plenty of shampoo, but no conditioner. The heater didn't work to its full potential. We cranked it up to the highest setting which was 86, but it felt more like 65 degrees in there. This was a bummer because we spent all day hiking Big Sur while it rained so we were soaking wet and covered in mud when we got back to our room. It would've been nice to come back to a warm room. Aside from that all was well. I highly recommend staying here. It's affordable, close to the freeway and just minutes away from Cannery Row and other surrounding sights. It was also nice to have some breakfast nibbles and drinks which they provide for free from 8 to 10am. read more

This place is very old. Everything is outdated by decades! Literally felt like I went into a time machine to the 70's. It was priced at $114 for what? I have no idea. We booked online but once I seen the room I immediately asked for a refund, the man working at the front said we could not get a refund because "you already entered the room" we didn't use anything, move anything, we walked in and walked right back out and because of that, he would not let us get a refund! Ridiculous! Then my boyfriend mistakenly used my card to charge it and when I told him at least refund my card because I needed my funds in there, he would not. First off, why would you charge a card without asking for Identification in the first place! Such a horrible place/experience. I literally cried. I would have much rather slept on the beach! My boyfriend and I have had the pleasure of staying at the Bayside Inn a few times now. Obviously those who have rated this place low were looking for a Hilton but didn't want to pay Hilton prices. For the budgeting person this place is probably one of the BEST places I've stayed at EVER!... And I'm 36 and have stayed at quite a few places being a traveler. The owner, the owners son, and any and all employees I've ran across have been more than accommodating and polite, it honestly moves my heart to see that hotel owners can actually STILL be decent and kind. My boyfriend and I can't be more satisfied for the accommodations. Yes, it's not the Marriott or the Hyatt, we wanted inexpensive and safe and clean. We got it. For the budget we had(have) it was WELL maintained, had free (yes FREE) wifi, clean NON diseased bed....And we usually ALWAYS use our own bedding, when we stay at places. We didn't feel the need to here, and I DON'T have rashes or bites. It's relieving. It comes equipped with a mini fridge, microwave, quiet atmosphere. The owners are continuously out sweeping or cleaning to maintain the curb appeal. And for those who swim....THERE'S A POOL!!! To sum it up..if I could give it 10 stars I would. We wanted cheap...But I tell you...We didn't get treated like that from the staff...We got treated like royalty. For those bad yelpers.....go somewhere else where there's room service and door men. Anyone posting 4 or 5 stars is obviously the owner or a friend of the owner. They need to update more than just the two chairs in the sitting area. Beds, bedding, carpet etc are HORRIBLE. A friend and I booked this place for one night extremely last minute because we got free tickets to the Pro Am at Pebble Beach. They let us check in as early as 11AM which was great because that allowed us to taxi to the golf course for the remainder of the day with no worries! The man who runs the place, Neal, is very friendly and accommodating. The rooms were clean and checking in and out was very easy. But in the end it is what it is. A last minute booking type of motel. The bed is uncomfortable, the room was cold, small and quirky. But it's perfectly fine for a place to rest your head for the evening. We got in quite late and discovered that the heater was not working in my mother's room. The night manager refused to leave the office to check it, and instead sent a man who lives at the motel. After fumbling with the buttons it was clear he knew no more than we did, so we had no choice but to request a refund since there were no extra rooms at the motel. However the "repair man" chose this moment to share the good news of Jesus with my mother. He had "Jesus" written on his shoes and kept insisting the Holy Ghost was speaking through him. My mother and I both told him that his testimony was not welcome at that moment but he would not stop. He became aggressive and was pacing the parking lot proclaiming that we would burn in hell. He was clearly imbalanced and it is astonishing that management would put such a person in contact with customers. They need to understand that not all their customers are Christian and even Christians may not want to share the word of Jesus at midnight while frantically trying to book a new hotel room. This was incredibly offensive and goes beyond the inconvenience of a broken heater. We did get out money back but I will be angry for the rest of my life that my 83-year-old mother had to hear that she is damned for all eternity from some fool who believes he has the right to speak for God. read more

These guys are running what I suspect is a scam. Upon check in April 18, 2018, the clerk running the front desk of this crunky old motel ran my credit card through three times - . It seems the cc machine was out of paper, and he had no idea how to work it, so he claimed it did not go through and subsequently charged me three times @US495 per charge - for my stay. He promised to refund the money, but did not do this until the next day, when the US - Canadian exchange rate had changed in favor of the $Cdn. The refunds that showed up on my Canadian Visa were for only US$466 - so the Bayside room owes me approx $60 US. After a couple phone calls and emails, Neal - the front desk guy who could barely speak or understand English, promised they'd take care of the charges. It's now June 7th and in spite of more emails and calls, they've chosen to ignore their mistake and leave the charges on my credit card. Monterey is filled with cheap motels just like the Bayside Inn - but I'm sure staffed with people who care more about their long term business than scamming customers for a few bucks. Also note that I booked the room though Booking.com - who also failed to return my emails asking for help to get my money back. read more

There's a lot of negative reviews on here so I'm going to go ahead and say it.... You get what you pay for. My boyfriend and I stayed here 2 nights, $50 each night, and it was perfect. Especially with how much we paid. The owner was super helpful, we had a problem with the tv box and after he called DirectTV and they couldn't help he just moved us rooms at no cost. Its a really small place, which I like, less room for obnoxious guest. The bed was comfortable, the TV was acceptable, the water ran hot, the only downside was the thermostat didn't work but there was a space heater to accommodate. This place is located 5 minutes away from a beach, a beach you don't even have to pay for parking at!, its right off the main road, right off the highway, and right down the street from grocery stores/restaurants. Overall this place was nice, probably more for the travelling type like us, we didn't stay in the room much, but again you get what you pay for. I'd definitely stay here again. read more

I booked this place BEFORE reading the reviews, because it was last minute and it was the cheapest. After reading the reviews, I thought about cancelling but didn't want to spend more money for another place. I armed myself with my own bedding, towels, Febreeze, Oust - you name it. When I got there I asked if I could see the room before forking out my credit card so I would have an out. The room was small, I give you that but it smelled of fresh paint, the bathroom had been redone with new vanity and fixtures, the shower/tub was clean with new shower curtain and the window was double pained window with a lock, all looked brand new. The fridge and microwave were clean and also looked new. There was a small table and chair for meals I mentioned to Neal, the manager, that I had read the reviews and was terrified! He mentioned that they have new management and I guess he was the new manager. He is Indian but the entire time I was there, he always had a smile on his face and was so accommodating, I understood every word and he communicated well. There was still no closet to hang clothes but an alcove and he said that the parts were on order and also a full length mirror, but he had gotten the security lock and installed it for me while I was out. I had washed some clothes and he threw it in his dryer for me. Overall, I had a pleasant stay, mind you I was working the enitre 3 days I was there and only came to the motel for sleeping and changing. I hope people give this place another chance for the price, the budget traveler will get their money's worth. read more

I came to Monterey looking for a decently priced and clean hotel where my girlfriend and I could lay our heads at night and hang out in the town by the day. I'm not picky when it comes to hotels but I expect cleanliness. Check-in was smooth and the grounds were well kept. Things were hopeful. We got into the room and peeled back the top cover of the bed only to discover on the blanket below the crusty white remnants of dozens of sordid sexual liaisons. Absolutely disgusting. I expect the top blanket to be gross in theory, but not visibly so. At this point my hopes for a sexy weekend were banished as I stood apologizing for my choice of hotel. Fortunately my girlfriend is a champ and stood by me as we carefully folded over the clean sheet so as to avoid touching any part of the blanket above. There were various elements of disrepair throughout: window didn't lock, fridge whistled in the night, bathtub grout was blackened, there was a faint smell of fish eminating from the bed.... Just gross. Two stars only because check-in was efficient and the outside grounds were clean. The rest was no bueno, save yourself the revulsion and stay someplace else. Unless you have a fetish for crusty old cum stains. Edit: I spoke to the owner who was very apologetic and gave a discount on the room. He stated he will clean up the areas I mentioned. absolutely the worst experience my husband and I have ever had. When we first stepped into our room, I wanted to walk right back out, but since every place was booked because of Moto GP. we were stuck with it. This room normally goes for about $68 a night, but they jacked up the price to $350 because they were the only place left open, and well, people like us were desperate. The room reeked of Febreze, and my first thought was "what are they trying to cover up?" I had to air out my room for several hours just to get the smell to die down. The room seemed clean enough, but the beds, pillows and bedding was EXTREMELY uncomfortable. That night our neighbors came back drunk and screaming and fighting. The walls are so thin, we could hear everything... and I mean, EVERYTHING. I asked the night manager several times to talk to the couple and quiet them down, but he ignored my requests every time. For the price we were paying for that room, that treatment was absolutely unacceptable. After 4 hours of the couple banging around and screaming, I finally had to resort to calling the police. They came out right away, and finally settled the couple down. We were then able to get about 3 hours of sleep before we had to get up, so basically we paid about $115 per hour to sleep. We will never, ever be back, we'd rather sleep the car. read more

The walls were scratched paneling, the bedspread was threadbare, the bathroom looked like it had been remodeled in 50 years, the carpet was simply filthy. Now the bad: we stayed in room 118 , as soon as we opened the door, I laughed and thought it was a joke , the room was the size of a closet..and for $100/night I was shocked! The door opened and a foot away was an old bed, looks like it's been in use since the 60's. a foot from the bed there was a dresser in horrible condition that housed a mini fridge with microwave on top of it , an old box tv with a fan on top of it and every electrical appliance was connected to one extension chord that sat on the dresser between the tv and the fridge. Around the corner was a disgusting bathroom; the toilet was old, chipped, the floors looked dirty , the sink was dirty and chipped, the shower was ok, very basic toiletries , two cheap hand soaps and towels that look like they've been in service since the motel opened , over all I was grossed out by the bathroom as it seemed like housekeeping washed it maybe a few times a year. The size of the room was so small we had to side step around each other awkwardly just to move . It was definitely not the big cunfy rooms they advertised, and for the price was a joke . The peep hole in the front door was blocked by a paper towel. For the price we paid I was shocked that we were given a broom closet with an old dirty bed stuffed into it. We've stayed at places for half the price and twice the size and cleanliness . Don't waste your money here , I'm sure the 5 other motels in the area are better than the closet they'll put you in and charge you for. read more

This hotel was SO bad that we now compare every bad (or potentially worse hotel) to the Bayside Inn. Granted, if it was $20/night, I wouldn't be complaining. But my bf at the time spent $200 for 1 (granted, it was a holiday weekend) night (my favorite was how he preceded the entry with "only the best for my sweetie!") and here's what we got in return: (1) a cigarette burn on the bedsheet replete with cotton pills near the feet, (2) a furnace that began to spurt "god-knows-what" in the middle of the night after a 1 minute loud shrieking episode that resembled a dying cat + fire alarm followed by a odd-smelling odor resembling musk and a homeless dog, (3) walls so thin that we could hear our neighbors every word (including sighs), (4) a sink so small that my toothbrush fell off when placed on the side, (5) a bed that provided hours of backache and cervicalgia the following morning and (6) questionable stains on the floor and "office chair" On the upside, the freezing room provided for ample cuddling and the employees were very nice. Luckily, we were able to laugh about it the entire time...even when the heater somewhat exploded. The funniest part of the night was when the heater started screaming and spitting out a bouquet of stank and my bf quickly woke up, stepped out of bed and immediately hit the wall (the separation between the bed and the wall is about 6 inches...and its ok, he wasn't hurt..I'm no masochist). He then opened the door and used it to fan out the smell. We then attempted to sleep for 5 minutes with the door open to air out the room. Since it was about 45 deg F outside and the sheets were lousy, we shivered from hypothermia to keep warm until we felt that it was safe to close the door. Anyway, so we both thought it was quite funny but I really wish we went back and asked for some kind of refund. As for the positive reviews on this page...I don't know what to say. They must have gotten a room in Narnia or something because I am really having a tough time seeing the positives. Regardless, I hope this place steps up their game. Apparently they have "resort fees." Rather exorbitant ones. At a roadside motel in the crummy part of town. I booked on Priceline, where it only listed a single charge of a $38 resort fee, when my mom looked at the reservation with the notice that final cost is determined by the hotel after your stay, and asked "Aren't resort fees per night?" So I phoned the place. The guy who answered said their resort fee is indeed per night, and he said it's usually $50/night but varies by day of the week. I asked him again, "So, my booking on Priceline that only lists a single resort fee charge for my entire 5-night stay is incorrect, and I will actually be charged a nightly resort fee when I check out in addition to the regular $52/night cost of the room?" He said, "Yes, that's right." OH. MY. GOD. I'm glad the guy was honest with me over the phone, but I wish Priceline listed their actual rates so it didn't come off like a surprise bait and switch for those who are not paranoid enough to phone them up. I'm sure it's probably an okay place, but I'm absolutely not paying $90-$102 per night for an economy motel, so I canceled. Hopefully the place I booked instead will be good. We'll see. read more
