We had stayed here once before and enjoyed it under the previous owners and thankfully, under the new owner, we still had a great experience. Karen was great about reaching out to us before our stay, and once we arrived, she was very accommodating to make sure our stay was a pleasant experience. We stayed in the crimson suite room. My wife and I stayed at The Historic Smithson Inn in Ephrata, PA last week. We found it to be a charming, cozy, clean and comfortable bed and breakfast in the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country. The owners and Inn Keepers, Rebecca and David Gallagher are friendly and attentive. They have added private bathrooms, air conditioning and fast Wi-Fi to every room. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever slept on and the breakfasts were out of this world! Rebecca is definitely a gourmet level cook. Perfect historical inn. We came for one night with my parents to celebrate they're wedding anniversary. The rooms are beautiful, the premises are gorgeous and the location is perfect for a quiet and restful evening. They did an amazing job at making my parents feel special, with a lovely (pre-ordered) bottle of wine and charcuterie board with chocolates. Rebecca was also fantastic, giving us tips as to where to go and activities to do, telling us about the Inn's history, and making a delicious breakfast. This Band B was top of the line. We were traveling with friends. From the moment we entered the door we felt welcome and at home! We appreciated the way the house was modern, but did not lose the time period in which it was built! Many original beams, door knobs etc. but modern and lovely showers etc. The wine tasting room was like none we experienced before. Delicious wine! Linens were top notch, food delicious and generous portions, and Rebecca and Dave the Best! The evening we sat around the outdoor fire was the icing on the cake! This is a wonderful B&B. Lots of wonderful things to enjoy, food and furniture. We were in Ephrata to visit friends and they recommend this Inn - so glad. My boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nites this past week and absolutely loved it! We could have lived in the Tailors Cottage forever. This portion is attached to the house, yet completely private with its own entrance and bi-level living. It was beautifully done with rustic charm, yet modern amenities. I took advantage of the spa tub and had no issue with not being able to use oils etc like a previous reviewer mentioned ..? The inn keeper, Rebecca was fantastic too! She made an amazing breakfast both mornings we were there and was extremely helpful in offering suggestions of things to do. She suggested a bike ride trail, which we did and enjoyed thoroughly. So this place is a relaxing, calming paradise. Seriously, I'd move here if I could. The beds...comfy with the softest sheets ever. The breakfasts are out of this world. My wife and I stayed at the Historic Smithton 29 years ago to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary. We had a great stay then so when we were looking for a quick, close getaway spot to celebrate our 30th (!) this month, we decided to go back. Unfortunately, the charm and hospitality I remember from our previous visit was gone. I get the CONTACTLESS check-in and I'm not one for "in your face" innkeepers but this place goes to the extreme now and I've truly felt more 'welcome' at a recent overnight stay at a Fairfield Inn! The only contact we had with anyone from the Inn were the servers at breakfast both mornings and neither of them asked us a thing about our stay -- where we were visiting from, if we were enjoying our stay, if there were any concerns, etc. Heck, they didn't even ask us if we wanted what it is they were serving for breakfast or if they could bring us something else. The second morning the server didn't even tell us what it was we were being served. When we came back to the Inn after spending a long day touring the area on Saturday, we wanted to take a nap before dinner but as soon as we laid our heads down, the musical entertainment in the "Wine Tasting Room" started belting out a tune and went on and on until we left for dinner at 6:30. A couple of other 'suggestions:' The innkeeper should not text the guests at 6:29 a.m. on a Saturday morning to find out what time they're coming to breakfast, especially when said guests left their choice of breakfast seating time on the front desk at check-in; let future guests know that you've got a 'side hustle' selling wine in the converted living room so they know they can forget about enjoying a little peace and quiet on weekend afternoons AND they can anticipate not finding a parking space; anyone/everyone employed there should use every guest interaction as an opportunity to make the guest(s) feel welcome (heck, the cashier at Sheetz thanks me for my purchase!) and finally, clean the ceiling fan in the Blue room. Kind of wish we'd stayed at the nearby Home2 Suites instead. read more

Thanks Rebecca for an awesome girls getaway. The delicious breakfast rotations between sweet and savory were spot on and we never walked away hungry. The lovely Crimson Dove room was incredible! My boyfriend and I recently had a weekend getaway to the Ephrata/Lancaster area, and we decided to stay at the Historic Smithton Inn based on all the positive reviews. This B&B is absolutely beautiful, well-kept, and full of character. We stayed in the Blue Room and were blown away. Very spacious, warm and comfortable...especially with its own fireplace! The breakfasts were delicious and home cooked. Not too heavy or light. Plentiful coffee and tea, even with a Kuerig available. We were able to enjoy a few movies in our room, and appreciated the current selection (even though I fell asleep watching the Avengers--blasphemy, I know!) I even got to play a litle bit on the baby grand piano and be entertained with tricks from the Innkeepers' dog, Lucky. I especially appreciated that they provided suggested running routes so my boyfriend could see the sights and get his weekly run. We didn't get to see all of the sights that we wanted to, so when we return, we will definitely come back to the Smithton Inn! We had a really great time. read more

A review that is long overdue, we stayed here back in 2009: The Historic Smithton looks very rustic from its exterior, and it was a little disappointing that the Tailor's Cottage we stayed in was nothing like in the pictures on the website - I thought it would be quite charming and cozy, but it was just okay. It was a bi-level floor with a kitchen and a small living room included, and there weren't enough lighting available. The spa tub upstairs next to the bedroom did not allow bath oils or bubbles, so that was really sad, as this is usually what I look forward to! The inn had free wi-fi, but not in the cottage - a huge inconvenience, but it forced you to stay away from checking your emails on your weekend getaway. A huge plus was that the cottage allows you to bring your furry friend - there's a built-in child's bed into the wooden walls, so your furry friend can make themselves quite comfortable - just be cause as it is high up. The inn didn't have a cocktail hour/afternoon tea, but Ms. Rebecca was kind enough to bring over a platter of cheeses, crackers, and some pretzels. Our breakfast included Belgian waffles, poached eggs (that came piping hot!), and the maple-cured bacon was quite tasty (yum!). We were the only ones who were at the inn, so we didn't have the opportunity to mingle with others at breakfast and such. The town of Ephrata itself is quaint, but the shops do close early as any other historic downtown area. On our way back here for a second visit this year!! Excited to crawl into a cozy bed, in a delightfully decorated room, with the promise of a five star breakfast and great conversation with the owners in the morning. On our first visit we arrived waaay after dark. Our key and checkin directions were lovingly left waiting for us on the counter. In the morning we were awakened by the smell of breakfast - it smelled so good. When we got to the dining room a huge carafe of coffee was waiting for us, and, in minutes, we were served breakfast, and it was outrageously delicious. Our three day stay offered three uniquely delicious breakfasts. The bed was so cozy, if it wasn't for the breakfast smells we would have slept in! The decor isn't cheap repros, it's comprised of local artists and true antiques! We were too busy to enjoy the fire pit or wine bar, but both looked so inviting! We did enjoy the rocking chairs on the porch - they were perfect for a relax after playing with our nieces and nephews. Thank you for what you do - looking forward to our next stay! read more

We have friends in the area and called the hotel to make a reservation, we were told they were booked for the weekend but the woman recommended we stay at the Inn. It was Our first experience at a B&B. It was cute and cozy . Each room has a color theme , we stayed in the red room. Reading the history behind the house was fascinating! Anyone can stay in a hotel , but staying in this B&B was an experience! Rebecca was so nice on the phone and very accommodating with helping make the reservation, she was just as sweet in person! The house keeper was also a Sweet heart. They helped make it a comfortable stay. Of course the best part of B&B is the Breakfast, they served delicious bacon egg potato tomato pesto dish, an array of teas and juices. There is a wine area and a little shop , we were happy to bring a memorable keep sake home . Highly recommend staying here. We hope to stay again. read more

Very nice accommodating space nuzzled in Ephrata. We were visiting family up here and I needed a place to charge my Tesla. I spoke with the owner Rebecca over the phone to make sure I could plug in and it was available. The charger is only $15 for non guests. That's awesome. They were very nice, offered me breakfast and a place to sit indoors while my car charged. The place is warm and welcoming. A historic site turned bed and breakfast. Great refuge for weary travelers, whether business or pleasure. My room was great--large and inviting: sitting room with FP, Amish quilts, work desk with WIFI and a huge bathroom. The breakfast was delicious: baked French toast with local fresh peaches and rich dark coffee. Other options were homemade muesli and yogurt and juices. Upon arrival, the wine and snacks were a welcome lagniappe after a long drive. The new owners are making lots of improvements. I can't wait to try it again and see what they do with the gardens. The inn is a cool historic building. Down the street are the Ephata Cloisters historic settlement. I was passing through and not that familiar with the area. Living in Manhattan, I had come to a point where I needed a refuge from stress, noise, chaos while still being able to maintain some standard of quality and comfort. Having been to Lancaster Co./Amish area once before, I knew that fresh air would be forthcoming, but what about a comfortable bed and delicious breakfast? Let me be succinct in stating why I've decided to take the time to write this review of Smithton Inn in Ephrata Pa: 1. THE INNKEEPER (Rebecca), when I spoke to her on the phone, immediately put me at ease by her enthusiasm which far exceeded any feeling of officiousness. We all know this is a business for profit, but we cling to the hope that we can still feel relaxed and WELCOME upon arrival, and this I felt. 2. THE INN. It is GORGEOUS. All the antiques are AUTHENTIC, it's not some hokey recreation. The beds are supremely comfortable (tempur pedic just like I have at home), the towels thick, the water pressure high, wide screen TVs, WORKING fireplaces. Do I REALLY need to continue? I had a fire burning all evening, as well as an IN ROOM massage. All this while keeping in tact the feeling of being liberated from the city and immersed into a relaxing Pa town with Amish roots. 3. BREAKFAST. Rebecca loves cooking, and as I saw my reservation go from one day to two to three, I will say that the thought of getting up from my comfortable bed was made easier by knowing that chicken hash with poached eggs, raspberry pancakes, asparagus and cheese quiche were waiting for me. She actually SEASONS her food as I would, I remember thinking that were I to criticize it would be that some guests might find this not to their taste, especially if they prefer eggos for breakfast but for me, someone who uses herbs and spices, it was a pleasure. SAGE in my hash! Of COURSE! 4. PRICE. Prices are bargains, that's all there is to say. I'm not rich nor poor, but it's within my price range and I'll be back as soon as I need another does of R and R, and that will be SOON. read more

. The place is historic. It has been kept up well. The rooms are clean with fresh linens and towels. You may want to ask for a room that does not face the road if you are light sleepers like we are. At some point during the night, an ambulance going at what could only be Mach 4 flew past and almost plastered me to the ceiling like the cat in those Tom and Jerry cartoons. Breakfast was good, nothing to write home about. The host and hostess were very nice and very accommodating. Loved this inn! Rebecca and Dave were so nice and accommodating. Stayed in the Red Room which was so comfortable and Clean. The bed was very comfortable with soft wonderful sheets. Breakfast was good. We had drinks in their tasting room there. Would stay again if we ever pass that way. My only suggestion is that the house cleaner look up at the lights on the side of the mirror. Lots of dust on the glass and a few cobwebs on the stone wall. Other than that minor little observation....perfect! read more

Spending Valentine's Day at The Smithton was definitely a treat! Upon arrival, we found chocolate cookies/candies in our room. All rooms, by the way, are historic and quaint with Amish-made bedspreads. All rooms also have a fireplace and a bathroom. An additional bonus was the breakfast - Eggs Benedict. The place is immaculate, the proprietors are friendly and knowledgeable, the inn is a walk through history (be sure to notice the kitchen floor; my guess is it is original and pre-Revolution!). We loved the place and DEFINITELY will return when back in PA. Suggestion: book early! My guess is they will fill. NOTE: I also read the review posted by Hannah Y. The Smithton, as I understand it, is under new management/owners. Maybe try it again, Hannah? We loved it! read more

Cabin fever, work stress and the deep desire for some quiet time together my husband and I just wanted an excursion. An Internet search led us to this wonderful bed and breakfast. We live in New Jersey and wanted a place that was a reasonable drive because we only had one night. Over the years I have enjoyed many day trips shopping to Lancaster and driving the quiet roads hoping to catch families out tending their farms or navigating their buggies so we decided to try there. We hoped for a fire place, a jacuzzi and a welcome mat for the our furry family member. What we got was a luxurious, quaint, immaculately clean, cozy, inviting amazing three room "Tailor's Cottage". At the end of a ridiculous winter we were lucky to arrive at the Inn on a day where the temperature rose into the high 50's which allowed us to take a walk in the shops area of Ephrata and sit out on in the yard at the Inn. We are already planning to come back in the summer so we can see the garden and what we think is a fish pond and perhaps have a fire on the back patio. While the Inn normal check-in is later in the day they were very accommodating to us. When we arrived even earlier than what we had intended it was not a problem. The Inn does sit on the corner of a busy road so you hear the traffic but the stone walls around it in the back separate you from that. This is a great location if you are going to spend your days exploring the Amish towns in Lancaster or go shopping and return back to spend some quiet time at the Inn. From the moment we opened the door to our suite we were thrilled with the choice. The sitting room and kitchen are on the first floor and the chill of the late winter was quickly warmed by a small fire in the fire place. I found myself thinking often that I was staying in an inn which had been standing since prior to the American Revolution and survived the Civil War. If the walls could talk what would they say? In every room it was evident that the current owners had lovingly restored it as the treasure it must have been to the families who called it home through all those years. Being a creature of the comforts of this century, we also appreciated the modern day amenities available to us. We soaked away the stresses in a steaming hot Jacuzzi and curled up next to the fire to watch an old movie on TV and we "checked in" to Facebook to post a few selfies using their wireless internet. The bed was big, fresh and comfortable with excellent quality sheets and pillows that you melted into. While we didn't use it this time because of the shortness of our stay, we appreciated the nicely stocked small kitchen. It appeared to have everything we would need to whip up some quick meals. It was also pretty apparent that if we needed anything out of the ordinary all you had to do was ask. The small touches were really nice. Bathrobes, scented oils for the jacuzzi, bottled water, trail mix and special unique smelling soaps. Breakfast was fabulous and cooked by the Innkeeper. Fresh fruits, fresh baked muffins and a baked egg casserole with fresh pesto (I can't remember what is was called but it was delicious) was the breakfast of the day. If you had a special diet need Rebecca was happy to take care of you. My husband is recovering from a stomach surgery so she made him simple scrambled eggs. It was clear that Rebecca takes great pleasure in her cooking and is right at home in her big kitchen. I hope to go back some time and take advantage of some of the special packages they offer with the assistance of other local business. The in-room massage sounds fantastic. We both found the stay to be exactly what we hoped for. The innkeepers made us feel welcome. They treated us in a way that made us feel they wanted to make sure we would come back and bring recommend us to our friends - which we will! The only disappointment we had was that we could only stay for one night. Next time we have to do at least a weekend and need to do our exploring on a Saturday. Sunday is a day of rest and church for the Amish so all the local business (markets and shops) we wanted to visit are not open on Sundays. Thank you Rebecca. Our organization needed a place to hold a retreat. This place was a great place for our staff to relax, unwind, and also discuss our organization. Their parlor was cozy, and had a very personal feeling for our meetings. The rooms were beautifully outfitted with all the modern necessities without losing the historic feel of the building. When I was coming to PA, I stated under NO CIRCUMSTANCES did I want to stay at an Inn or Bed & Breakfast. Unfortunately because all the hotels were booked, I ended up at the Historic Smithton Inn. I went in very jaded expecting the worst. What I found was a COMPLETE difference. I expected an old home that was dated and creepy with a sweet but older inn keeper. What I FOUND what a beautiful, rustic Inn with modern amenities and a peppy, beautiful younger woman who was always aiming to please and going above and beyond. Rebecca was a welcoming and gracious host. No matter the time she took my calls and requests and also took the time to get to know me and other guests. She was inquisitive and found I was a runner, mentioning local trails I could run, and even offering to help me Map My Run. She COMPLETELY changed my view about Inns. Now I've told my team that any time I am visiting from out of town I absolutely want to stay at the Historic Inn. Thank you so much Rebecca for completely surprising me! read more
