A very quick drive later, we were at the State Park and enjoying all that it had to offer. I appreciate that the roads within the State Park are paved, as the terrain can be steep at times and with the rains we've had, a gravel road would have washed out. The museum is small, but highly informative. I learned so many new things about Stanly County and the types of rocks and minerals found within the county. After the museum, we drove around the State Park, exploring the many camping sites, seeing the Kron house, and ending up at the scenic overlook. There was one hairpin turn that you have to be careful with when meeting oncoming vehicles, but it was a very serene drive. I thought it was awesome they had a "summit snack bar" that was open, although we didn't wander over. The views are breathtaking! Such a great place to visit on a weekend or during the week when time permits.

Even on a holiday weekend, the closest neighbor was on the other side of the lake. There was a bathhouse 1road over and a boat ramp that we will utilize the next time we visit. Highly recommend this camp site. They offer kayak, boat, and jet ski rentals as well.

Am I glad I ignored the message and took the time to stop by, drive through, and walk around. Expecting to find a park with a slant on conservation of flora and fauna, some endangered, I was surprised to find that and a lot more. South Carolina is home to one of nations Wildlife refuges, and at 45,000 acres, it has something for everyone. There's a road through the Refuge for those wanting an overview, with the road starting on one end from Hwy 1 and going a few miles through wooded areas, and past some ponds and lakes. Within the Refuge are a few hiking/walking trails ranging from a little less than a mile to a little over three miles. For ornithologists, it's a must-stop spot. As you enter the refuge, near the office, there are brochures available describing all the things to see or do during a visit. It's open for self-guided touring if that's your preference. Surprisingly, at certain times of the year, the Refuge is open to hunting, and in a smaller area, open for fishing as well. Every month highlights different wildlife Every so often, they do controlled burns that mimic those in nature with the goal of creating conditions that help certain animals and vegetation. Even the ponds and fields are managed to prevent thing that hinder new growth or prevent wildlife from flourishing. It's an amazing sight to see, and best of all, it's free.

This is nature, this is dirt and trees how the hell can you tell me it is closed. Stay out of South Carolina, everything is backwards there. You are not even allowed to go into nature, WE ARE NATURE. Do you think we just spawned in one day? Why can't I go see my sister and brother trees and plants? They want you indoors, obese, high blood pressure, cancer, and porn addiction. Stay safe. I will go back, and no Sheriff can tell me I cannot go in MY NATURE. Do my tax dollars not pay his paycheck anymore? As far as I know they DO. He can stay fat and stay back.

The Carver Creek State Park is broken into two different sections: Long Valley Farm Access (with the historic Rockefeller Retreat House) and the Sandhill Access (just flat trails for hikers/horses). They are about 20 minutes apart. Between the two, I'd go to the Long Valley Farm Access since the history component whereas the other is just trails. Overall, there is really not much else here and you can complete it within an hour an a half or so. The loop is 2 miles long, but if you go straight back then it's about 1.5 miles total.

We saw the Red-cockaded Woodpecker which was awesome. The helpful Staff member at the Visitor Center showed us pictures and played the sounds of them which was very helpful in locating them. We also saw a Fox Squirrel which was also a first. The Visitor Center is very nice, with a Nature Center and very clean restrooms. Definitely will be back !!!
