Fish & Chips: This was my order. The classic dish of the British Isles had a subtle sweet and buttery taste. The steamy battered fried cod was accompanied by a basketful of delicate potato chips. I truly enjoyed the delicate crunch that had the right amount of salt. The coleslaw that came with it was drenched but the taste is there. Personally, I'd rather have too much dressing than dry coleslaw. Overall: 5 of 5 French Dip Sandwich: I didn't taste this but was told it was good. Overall: 4.5 of 5 Jalapeno Burger: I didn't taste this dish. I was told that the meat was overdone, and the bun tasted stale. The fries had an odd 'old oil' taste. The Hitching Post is a family owned and operated restaurant, that offers great food, a full service bar, and a sports bar dining experience in Ahwahnee, CA, in Madera County, near the south end of the gold country, in California. The dining room is spacious, and is furnished with tables, which offer comfortable dining for large groups. Decor is added by saws, picks and other artifacts from Madera County's logging and mining history. Gold country dining at the finest! From the "Burgers" section of the menu, I went with a "Famous Burger," with my side of choice was fries. Simply a great, staple, "old school" diner option. The slice of dill pickle on the side was simply amazing! The burger began as a third-pound side of tender, juicy beef, seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was interesting, as I didn't let the chef know exactly how I wanted my beef patty cooked, but he has talent and my beef patty was cooked perfect... I mean PERFECT! Such a delicious burger patty, grilled medium, full of flavor. The burger patty was placed on a toasted bun, lightly buttered and toasted to perfection. I asked for "everything" when I ordered my burger, so that's what I got... EVERYTHING! Sliced tomato, onion, pickle, and a simply GIGANTIC amount of fancy lettuce. What much more could you ask for on a delicious, "old school" burger? With a burger this delicious, I didn't need to add cheese, or top it off with mayonnaise or mustard, as it was simply amazingly delicious by itself. Oh yes... a slice of dill pickle on the side. Yowza! The fries... my goodness, the chef has talent, as the fries were simply delicious. Crispy, golden brown on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside... my kind of fries. Not to mention there was a mountain of fries, which should keep a NFL linebacker or a Madera County lumberjack satisfied until dinner. Me? ... just a humble "foodie..." I was happy until dinner. What a hidden gem!!! I've passed this place several times when visiting family and never thought to stop. You order at the counter and your food is brought out to you. The place is big and everything is kept clean. We ordered, two egg breakfast with sausage white toast and hashbrowns, two French toast and biscuits and gravy. I wasn't to keen on the French toast. Oh, just where do I start? Walking in the door we made eye contact with the owner who was the only server working. Well guess we were not welcomed by her very unfriendly attitude. We chose to eat in an enclosed room. Gave us menus but they neglected to tell us we had to order at the bar while everyone else got to order at their tables. Once we finally received our drinks still didn't tell us to order at the bar, we had to figure it out ourselves. So... Let's move on to our actual meals .. We all ordered the French dip sandwich with fries. Oh heck no! The sandwich rolls were soggy with a clear liquid. I made the unfortunate decision to try what I thought was au jus, but it was in fact some strange brownish hot water with a hint of cinnamon?! AWFUL to say the least. We left no tip, ( they add on a 20% tip for parties of 5). I would not recommend this business nor subject my friends to crappy food and even worse service. So disappointed! read more

Came here because of the great reviews (and desperation, we came from Yosemite and it was around 10:00pm so it was either this or Denny's). Make NO MISTAKE - this is pretty typical and average bar food - burgers, fries, potato skins, chicken tenders etc. Chili Fries we ordered were NOT good - Chili was flavorless and tasted like it came out of a can. The Western Bacon Cheeseburger was pretty good and was the only decent thing in our meal, honestly. The potato salad that I ordered with the burger was very flavorless - required lots of salt and pepper to even be palatable. We sent the awful Chili fries back and got regular fries instead - hard to mess those up, I guess? The service was friendly but it was clear our waitress was drunk. Also, and this is worth mentioning, the band playing was absolutely awful - the band members were all clearly drunk and singing off key, with a few women in their late 50's drunkenly dancing/stumbling to the music. We had a great experience here. It looked like a locals joint. Very casual, everyone was extremely friendly. We saw a few families having a late breakfast together. We were there for the same. When we arrived at 10:15 the majority of tables were empty but by the time we left there was a steady stream of lunch guests. Plenty of parking and they had an outdoor area that looks like it would be fun for an evening drink. Our food was delicious and came in big portions. First time here!!! Waited in line for 30-40mins and they stopped serving breakfast 20mins ago! The breakfast the bartender said varies on time she stops cooking! Dam that's some BS watching everyone get their breakfasts sucks!! I guess we'll go somewhere else! Wasted 30mins at this dive!
