I'm actually going to do a quick and simple review of this place. The food. It's just not there. We rarely send things back but 3 dishes later we just ate what we felt like was worth it and left what we didn't. We had a pretty large party and with a small menu we almost covered it all. The best things on the menu were the empanadas even though they didn't make sense on paper and the rest was disappointing. Being as how we were the table sending things back I will have to say the service was 5 plus stars. You never know how anyone is going to take you being as how they have their own personal relationship with the food (and kinda have to like it since it's their job) so we were nice, paid for what they felt like they needed to charge us for and left. Upside? The facility is a nice piece of history up here. Had the food matched that it would've been a 5 start experience all the way around. Nice little river running thru the property and over the top maintained. We didn't see the insides of the rooms but if it matched the dining area this place was pretty phenomenal. Back one more time on the food, none of the fish dishes were worth it. Tiny sliver portions and super fishy tasting for it to be a busy Saturday. If you like fish and fishy flavor it's for you, but if you're a non fish tasting person who likes fish (I know my target fish audience gets that) skip it. It wasn't good. We also skipped dessert so can't comment on that. The other parts of the meal were just not that good. Also had a tequila cocktail I'm not sure why I ordered a second one of that kept me up from whatever the juice was they used in it. The 5 of us came around 7pm on a Sunday and plenty of empty tables. It's attached to an inn and right off the freeway. There are a lot of specials and items that weren't on the menu that were only brought up when the ones we were interested in were out. I would ask them to see what they have available. Two orders of medium rare ribeye: this wasn't how I like my ribeye. It wasn't so tender or seasoned. It seemed interesting with the guacamole but it ended flat. The fries had crispy texture but was much too salty! It felt like a mistake. Bison burger: This was really tasty, and I'd get this again! I've only had bison a couple of time and it's usually lean, but this was juicy. The fries again were so salty. Alligator tacos: they were out of fish so they suggested this instead. First time having alligator and it was tender. My mom who was squeamish about it ended enjoying it a lot. We also had the Mariposa Margherita which was actually good with the bee pollen. We didn't specify well or not, and they gave us the premium tequila as default, so be mindful of that. I got the blonde ale and it was not bad but would opt for something else. read more

A cozy pitstop After a day of hiking, we stopped by here for some grub. The inside is tavern modern, warm n cozy. We were able to snag a seat by the window to witness some fresh snowfall. The food here is nothing mindblowing, but it hit the spot. I started off with the French onion soup and the salad. Salad was fresh with a good variety of veggies. I made reservations at this restaurant as we were staying here. The service was great. Our server was Alex for Alexandria. The ambience if you like stuffed deer, etc. it's great but if not not so much. The servers they do the drinks also and I had two old-fashioned that were excellent, and my husband had Gin on the rocks. He had a wedge salad and I had a salad that was local. He had the scallop appetizers, but he wasn't thrilled with the sauce. I had chicken marsala that was totally different than I've ever had but it was good. 10 stars!!! We came up here on vacation to go to Yosemite and we stayed and ate here our first night, absolutely amazing. Staff was friendly and welcoming and the food made us want to come back nightly. I enjoyed the surf and turf special but didn't get a photo, dad had the elk and hubby had the cheeseburger. Everything was delicious, mine came with asparagus and broccoli which I could have eaten a plate of by themselves! Steak was cooked perfectly and very tender and their mashed potatoes had us asking what the secret was, we definitely look forward to visiting again. My husband and I went to dinner here last night during their happy hour which is between 4-6pm. We started with the Lobster Spinach dip with homemade tortilla chips !!! I wish I would of taken a pic of it, it was sooooo good !!!! Then I ordered the Shrimp Tortellini which was excellent, it came with brocollini and asparagus. Now my husband got the Ostrich and wow, it was amazing!!!! It was tender and cooked perfect and the sauce over it was really good. It came with polenta. I've been here a few times and it never disappoints. Aroma Tavern, Fish Camp: 2024 Aug 24 (4 of 5) Fish Camp is on CSR-41, a gateway to Yosemite Park South Gate. Fish Camp's growth was driven by the logging industry. During the Prohibition years, bootleggers ran booze out of Fish Camp. Along CSR-41 sits Narrow Gauge Inn. Originally built by Swedish immigrants, the inn sits in a quaint peaceful place amid the forest. There have been several changes to the ownership of the inn and the restaurant. The latest is named Aroma Tavern. Our orders: Small Bites: Fried Devil Eggs (pickled shallots, mustard aioli, micro greens). I quite enjoyed the unusual delivery of this dish. I thought the warmed eggs had plenty of umami and the onions complimented the dish. The presentation was quite nice too. There were three pieces of hard-boiled eggs. What happened to the second half? I think the price is steep, even though we received a Happy Hour discount, but the taste deserves high praise. (5 of 5) From the Garden: Aroma Wedge Salad (bacon, grilled corn, tomato, avocado, tortillas, smoked egg, blue cheese). This is one of the tastier Wedge Salad I've had. The lettuce tasted fresh, the salad is not drowning in dressing, and just the right amount of everything else. (5 of 5) Entree: Juniper Encrusted Rack of Lamb (roasted garlic whipped potatoes, grilled asparagus, mint pesto). The presentation was picture-perfect, but the meat looked bloody. I pressed my finger on the meat, and it was cold. Someone had forgotten to sear this. We sent this back for a refry. The returned meat lacked seasoning. I'm sensitive to salty foods, but had to shake salt onto the meat. Other than the bland meat, the asparagus was cooked through, but still maintaining the crunch of this beautiful vegetable. The mint pesto gravy was good and the potatoes didn't overpower the main. Overall, this could have been a delicious meal. Instead, I could only give this a 3. (3 of 5) Entree: Mary's Chicken pot Pie (chicken breast, mirepoix, english peas, yukon potato, summer thyme gravy, puff pastry). I had one bite of this and the overwhelming heat of pepper killed everything else. The dish lacked salt. We thought more butter was needed in the roux. The carrots were near raw. The entire dish lacked depth. (2.5 of 5) Server: Kevin N was our server for the evening. We thought Kevin was efficient and friendly. (4 of 5) Atmosphere: This is an interesting eatery. We thought the decorations on the wall was over-the-top, but they fit the feel of this place. The tables were spaced apart with care, and the cutlery and glasses were clean. We were greeted by Alex who it turns out was running the entire front of the house. She was not only pleasant, but made some beautiful drinks. If you're going specifically to try the ostrich or the elk, call ahead and make sure it's available because, according to the server, they don't usually have them. The French onion soup here is the saddest of all the French onion soups. The fish and chips were below average, and they also ran out of tartar sauce. They have friendly server, the dinners were awful however and it was very disappointing. First of all, I never complain about much of anything and just move on when an experience isn't so great. In fact, we try to support the smaller restaurants and not a big chain. So, we did not grumble to the server about the really bad dinner. We did tell the clerk at the Narrow Gauge Inn though so that she knew. The wedge salad had a very thinned out dressing on it and we removed some lettuce that had brown on it. The avocado stuff they seem to put on everything here was not good and not fresh. It was the first time we had a wedge salad that was neither crisp or tasty. We wanted the shrimp with pasta but they were out of shrimp so we reluctantly ordered the chicken pasta.....it was not good at all, my wife ate the chicken and barely good touched the pasta. Not served warm and no flavor at all. My medium rare rib eye was burnt on the outside edges and did not have very much pink in it. Probably because it was so small and thin, not 12 ounces for sure. Again, the avocado stuff to top it was not tasty at all. The fries were actually decent, but agree with the other reviews as too salty. Lessons learned: 1. if they run out of food on the first night of service for the week it's a sign of poor management and maybe leave from there. 2. if in doubt of the food, order a hamburger. At least with a hamburger you can get something out of it. We ate less than a third of our meal and when the server took our plates away didn't say a word, maybe she knew! read more

Terrible quality food! The only plus was our waitress who was really nice and accommodating. Went there on a Friday night with my toddler and were expecting great food but were completely dissatisfied! The place was almost empty! Only 2 other families sitting there on a Friday night (I should have taken this as a sign). We ordered Pasta for my kid, Chicken potpie for my wife and I ordered the steak. All of the dishes were horrible and I have no doubt that the food was a few days old!!! Pasta was dry and very bland so my som ended up not eating it. Chicken was hard, dry and not juicy at all. Celebrated my sister's birthday at the restaurant. We drove from Sacramento, and my sister drove from Long Beach; we were in Fish Camp for the Jazz Train the following day. It was a beautiful evening, in the 70's, so we sat outside. It was very comfortable, and screened in, so no flying insects. Food was great. A friend brought 2 bottles of wine and the corkage fee was very reasonable at $10 per bottle; Service was attentive. And best of all, they didn't hurry us. it was thoroughly enjoyable! read more

Highly recommend It's a restaurant attached to a train themed motel so I went in with low expectations, but the place really delivered. We started with the fried devilled eggs (always a winner) and the artichoke bread, which seemed to be a very thick focaccia with herbs and artichokes baked in. For mains, the menu indicates that most entrees can be made vegetarian, so we got an asparagus pappardelle and a lions mane burger (couldn't resist, never heard of anything like that). For dessert, we got the cheesecake with local berries, which was very creamy and really well balanced with caramel sauce, berries and what seemed like honey roasted pecan pieces. This is Narrow Gauge Inn's restaurant in Fish Camp, CA, and was great! A group of 6 went and the new Chef Rob did not disappoint. We all loved the various appetizers, entrees, soup and desserts that we ordered. The rustic, alpine charm, inside, and vintage bar add to the experience. The menu has been revamped and fresh, seasonal and local options are the focus. We are "local" and this is well worth the few extra minutes' drive on Hwy 41 North of Oakhurst or Bass Lake. It's just outside the entrance of Yosemite, too. We all said we can't wait to go back! read more

We were so pleasantly surprised by this wonderful little restaurant. We were staying at the attached Narrow Gauge Inn and were not expecting much from the restaurant based on the ok but honestly very drab accommodations, but we were too exhausted after a day of hiking to look for other dining options. The dining rooms have a very cool old lodge feel with wood construction, stained glass windows, stone fireplaces, and mounted taxidermy. The servers were prompt and attentive, and the food was amazing. Shockingly good elk loin and ribeye steaks, perfectly rare, beautifully presented with fantastic sauces. Chimichurri (sp?) fries might be my new favorite thing. But the best thing was the salted caramel cheesecake we took back to our room to enjoy while watching a movie in bed - light textures and wonderful sauces. The only thing that would make the restaurant better would be some moody jazz playing in the background while gazing out over the mountain landscape. read more

This place is incredible! When you enter, it's like walking back in time. They have the old, original menus in the foyer and oil lamps on the tables. It just feels like this place hasn't changed much in 100 years - and that's a good thing! We were seated by the fireplace. So romantic! We brought our own wine for dinner and they do have a reasonable corkage fee. But we saw Cham Cham on their drink menu, we knew we had to start with those. Champagne plus Chambord. Oh yes! First up, Truffle Mac and Cheese. Mmmmmm. You could tell this was all made from scratch and made with love. Guyere cheese, crispy garlic and delicious flavors all melding together. You won't be disappointed with this dish. And it's the perfect amount to share. Next, we both opted for the Filet mignon with English peas. I didn't realize how amazing fresh peas could taste! They were fabulous! I ate mine. Then I ate his. LOL The filet's were cooked to perfection and melted like butter, which they were topped with btw. The red wine reduction carmalized into a sweet, savory crust. Every bite was a celebration in my mouth. Service? I'm glad you asked. There was only one server - who is seriously worth a million dollars. He was host, server, bartender and busser. And he did it calmly and with ease. I know that's not easy and he has a gift. We wanted for nothing and he checked in with us many times. The atmosphere was 100% old time mountain lodge. The music reflected the surroundings. It was the perfect quaint dining experience we had hoped for. Whenever we're back in this area we will be returning here for a meal. It was an amazing experience from beginning to end. read more

Our first time in Yosemite and at this restaurant. We are staying here so of course we had to try the restaurant. The mashed potatoes worst ever and are ice cold the rice was rock hard uncooked. My husbands burger was way under cooked. My daughters ordered her steak medium well and it was definitely rare. The picture I'm including was the steak after we asked for it to be cooked more only thing good here was the side salad. Don't bother having a couple drinks you have to catch the waitress and beg her to get a cocktail. If we come back to Yosemite I'll not be coming back here. This restaurant and bar has been ruined by new ownership. We have been coming to the Narrow Gauge Restaurant for over 30 years and it is not what it used to be. Went there last night there were two other tables in use. The bar did not even have vodka. The bar was so understocked. No professional bartender. The air-conditioning did not work and they had a couple of fans running. We were here two other times in the past year and the bar had no ice. The menu has been paired down to bare minimum. We ordered a salad but never got it. I will say our entrées a fillet and swordfish were excellent. We are local owners of a cabin in the area for the past 45 years. Will not go back to Narrow Gauge inn spoke to our neighbor and he said oh yes it is terrible. read more
