Another successful visit to the OG Hitching Post in Casmalia. One of the Central Coast's best gin martinis (Hendricks straight up: $12!) is a perfect accompaniment to their Twilight menu (aka early bird) sirloin steak ($43 with all the usual HP accoutrements: relish tray, bay shrimp cocktail, garlic bread, beans, salsa, soup or salad, ice cream and coffee). Perfect medium rare. My partner tried the French fries and they were spot on. I also adore their blue cheese dressing. I save some to put on my baked potato. I bought a jar of their seasoning to take home ($11 for a pound of it). The rose garden is in full bloom and the gentle bustle of the dining rooms with a view of the kitchen and grill is part of what makes this our happy place. Service is consistently friendly and excellent. Our server this night was Amanda and she rocks. A glass of the HP Pinot Hometown ($12) was also delicious. Stop at the Santa Maria or SLO Costco for 2 $50 gift cards for $79.99 - but tip for the full amount, please! We love you, HP!

Went for the third time to the Casmalia location Thursday night with my wife and my mother in law who was in town. I had their lamb chops and New York strip in the past (perfect). This time I got a top sirloin. Love the seasoning and love the tenderness of the steaks. You can count on a flawless sear and a perfect medium-rare. MUST GO if you're in the area.

The Hitching Post in Casmalia is easily the best steakhouse in Santa Barbara County. The ribeye is perfection. Don't miss the artichoke and scallops, all cooked over red oak. Total pros, front & back of house.

Glad we were able to make a reservation as it was really busy. Cool, vintage feel with cute bridge and barn in the back. Restaurant feels very squished, both table-to-table and seats within each table. I would expect to feel more comfortable while indulging in our delicious meal. Steaks were prepared beautifully and our appetizers, sides, drinks and dessert complimented our meats perfectly.

Wow. I am an LA native so I knew nothing of the Hitching Post until I met my partner who was born & raised in Lompoc. She always told me the best steak was at the Hitching Post in Casmalia, and she was right! We decided to go to the Hitching Post for my partner's birthday and it lived up to its expectations. Service was great, and the restaurant gave a homey feeling. My partner's steak was cooked to perfection and my ribs were so perfectly seasoned. Cannot wait to go back!

This place is in the middle of nowhere and somewhere. Casmalia, California. The food is all freshly cooked, of course, and the meats are all from the nearby farm . We had a big group go there of which they can service large groups in a separate room as well as small groups in the main area . The portion size is huge and you can more than share food if you want to. I had a delicious half stack of pork ribs and grilled artichoke, and they were outstanding! Our service that night was fantastic! If you want wine and dine on good beef products, this is an amazing place.

What a lovely and historical bbq restaurant this place is. I only stopped in to buy merchandise to giveaway at a Toastmasters event, but this place is totally worth the detour from the main roads. The restaurant is small and intimate inside, but lively and friendly around 5:30 pm on a Friday. There is plenty of parking and the service from the hostess desk is friendly. I can't wait to return with my friends and family to enjoy BBQ. In the meantime, I will be smiling up some bbq with my new seasoning and baste.

I've lived in Santa Maria about three months now and I've been to the Hitching Post three times already. The service, the steak, the experience has been outstanding every time. Plus I love watching my steak cook on the Santa Maria grill! I usually get a sirloin or something kinda fatty. Meals include salad, shrimp cocktail (minis), bread and ice cream. This family owned place is a staple in the area, Tourism Partner of the Year in 2024, and you will not be disappointed.

Ribs were better than the steak. Service was long and I had a baby with us so was a little inconvenient. Ambiance was normal for a steakhouse, not my favorite in town but cool to try.

The meal was so delicious I remembered mid meal to take a picture.

Is this the same place in the movie Sideways?

No, The Hitching Post II in Buellton was the one in Sideways.

Needs to make a reservation?

If you arrive as soon as they open you can generally get in without too much of a wait. But if you want to arrive later or have a large party I would certainly recommend reservations!

As of August 31, 2021, does the HP 1 still have a tented patio for dining, with heaters, and about how many tables?

I had a reservation and we were seated immediately. Dan was our server, and he was gregarious and efficient. We liked him a lot. I ordered the pork ribs and hash brown casserole while my friend ordered the ravioli. We enjoyed the beans, pickles and crackers while we waited; it wasn't long before our meals arrived. The ribs were delicious and huge! Very meaty, not skimpy at all, and just enough seasoning to make them pop. The hash brown casserole was also terrific, and I enjoyed those leftovers the next day. The ravioli is stuffed with meat, and the meat sauce was thick and, well, meaty. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit! I recommend you make a reservation if you can. They do take walk-ins but you might be waiting a long time.

I understand steaks shrink a little when you cook them. But that's a whole half of steak that I didn't receive and when you are paying the prices they charge ($52.50) you expect to receive what you are paying for. I didn't want to drive all the way back so I'm writing this review to let everyone know. If you can weight your steaks!!!!

Noticed when checking in the biz cards for vista, ada fish house, rosa. I knew ada from long ago had opened rosa next to them, but did not realize vista was as well! No wonder I chose Vista for the fancy dinner, wanted to try the sand dabs that looked good on the menu and photos. But we actually had 2 sand dabs at Ada's for lunch and it was good to realize I didn't need to eat sand dabs here to see if better, lol!!! Knowing the ada/rosa/vista link, I made sure to try a pasta here, since didn't get to try Rosa's yet, so it was perfect to get a taste of their pasta here! Basically a higher priced Ada's and Rosa's, but I think it's worth it with the fine dining experience and service and the window side table to watch the sunset (reserved ~30 min before day's sunset). Plus the steak here was excellent as well. Did a tasting at Halter Ranch, so it was a pleasure to find their cab here. Brussels Sprouts appetizer was well prepared with playful mix of flavors that made it extra enjoyable. Calamari was incredible, maybe the best I've had. The sauces, oh man... It was my boy's first calamari experience and he was addicted and looking for calamari at every restaurant after this place. It was fantastic Shrimp n crab pasta. Wow that pappardelle was excellent pasta. Was expecting the typical thick dense pasta, but this was thin and delicately delicious papperdelle, very special. I assume Rosa's will be a great place for Italian based on this here! Went for the ribeye medium rare. It came out looking perfectly grilled! And perfectly medium rare. So delicious and flavorful, why does my ribeyes in my backyard ever turn out like this!?!?! I need to find the secrets to the great restaurant steaks some how... :( Even enjoyed the rice, I think same as what we had during lunch with the sand dabs, delicious rice... Overall, a perfect special occasion restaurant for the area I think. Pricey dinner, but the food and views and experience was memorable.

A couple of the drinks didn't quite hit, but the "Sunset and Chill" was a group favorite. The wedge salad isn't traditional, but it's delicious and a nice twist on the classic. The lasagna was a standout -- rich, decadent, and really satisfying. The portion looks small, but don't be fooled. Service was great throughout. They gave us semi-private seating, which we really appreciated, and the outdoor setup added a fresh, airy feel while still keeping things cozy for our group. For dessert, the toasted marshmallow torte was the clear table favorite -- definitely the one to try. The lemon tart was good too, but if you're choosing one, go marshmallow. All dishes were given with care but not necessarily to overly impress, meaning that the portion size was generous rather than dainty. The experience of the place was considerably more sophisticated than I recall from the Central Coast of almost 20 years ago when I lived in the area. (Granted, time has passed, but still refreshing to see.) Staff also seemed happy to be there and engaging with diners, more than merely doing their jobs. We drove over from Solvang on state highway 246, which was nice because we got to avoid the rush hour traffic and construction on 101. The round trip is not bad. The service was excellent. Iliana our server was very nice and attentive. We got the chicken and meatball soup and the pan seared salmon. The soup was just ok, not bad, but not super exciting. The salmon was excellent. It is normally served with hollandaise sauce, spinach, and mushroom over mashed potatoes. We subbed the potatoes for more veggies. The veggies were well seasoned, salmon coked well, and sauce was a nice compliment. Their Diet Coke cups were huge. They only have one toilet and someone was in there a super long time when we wanted to leave, so plan wisely if you need to go. We had to hold it all the way home. The lot has adequate parking. The bar is only beer and wine. The restaurant is not super visible coming from the east, so listen to your map app when to turn. We had a good experience and would come back when in the area again.
