My three star rating is from the perspective of someone who isn't local to Jenkintown and isn't loyal to any one theater. Overall, my experience here was positive. The sound quality was good. The video quality was pretty good. The concession stand was a bit off and didn't seem to fit the overall feel. I imagine it is difficult to have an old-school theater with an updated concession stand though. Other older theaters in the area seem to deal with the same thing. It is a nonprofit theater so you're going to get that feel and see signs asking for donations and why you should support the theater. I suppose for me, it comes down to what I want in a movie theater experience. I want an affordable ticket price, top-notch video and audio quality, comfortable seats, good popcorn, and a well-mannered crowd. I suppose if I lived within walking distance of the theater I might be more excited about a local nonprofit theater. But, I don't and if I am going to be choosing between a charming theater that plays one movie (that is often not a top box office film) and a more commercial theater that offers the best in the mentioned criteria, I'm going to choose the latter 9/10 times. That being said, this theater accomplishes what it sets out to do pretty well. It is charming and it seems to have the support of the community.

I am in this neighborhood pretty often and always wondered about the Hiway Theater. It looks little creepy and run down, but thanks to Yelp - I made my way last night and was pleasantly surprised! Did I mention I went alone? ...yet another perk of traveling for work. Anyhoo, this place boasts a long list of pros. - super clean - spacious theater, comfy seats, two seaters - good popcorn and unexpected treats! Jelly bellies, toblerones, fizzy juices, etc - prices are agreeable, about $10 a ticket, popcorn and drinks about $3-4 - It's a single screen theater with not many previews so they wait until the concession line is all serviced to start the movie The memberships to support the place are actually great also, $15 gets your 3 month membership, a free ticket and free popcorn (which is $15...) and you get reduced tickets for the next 3 months. I am very seriously contemplating. I watched the "Silver Linings Playbook" at 7:30pm, with about 15 other people in the theater and had a great time. I look forward to returning to catch the next flick - Les Mis.

Love this place! Especially for the old horror movie showings. So glad places like this still exist!

We moved to Cheltenham in 1999. Finally made it here. Don't want to rush these things. Great old theater in tip top shape.

Good theater. I like the comfortable seats. The love seats are adorable. I just wish there was room for them to expand.

This is just my absolutely favorite movie theater. Nice touch of "good old days". Nice addition to old and spectacular little Jenkintown.

A nice little independent theatre in my backyard! Great selection of movies, good food, and a clean theatre... what more do you need?!?.

You couldn't get in and out easily. I spilled my coffee and had trouble getting help cleaning it up. The actual play we saw I wasn't too into. Not to say the cast didn't do a great job. The writing and story just wasn't engaging . It was hypochondriac. The guy next to me fell asleep and was snoring. They have a good selection at the snack shack.

(You may have been to the Bryn Mawr, another Lee-designed theater which operates as a popular movie house, to this day.) The Sedgwick was completed in 1928 and still has vestiges of its original art deco design. The theatre itself added to my appeal of "The Pirates of Penzance," the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta staged there . Decades ago I'd seen a production of 'Pirates' starring Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt. Quintessence's presentation was equally wonderful. Outstanding cast, outstanding staging, costumes, everything (!).... including tweaky nods to current political ineptitude. (The audience responded with cheers and applause.) Sit where you will. It's general admission, and as the saying goes 'no bad seat in the house.' If you have the opportunity to attend a Quintessence Theatre production, by all means, go! In addition to performances, their education department sponsors classes, workshops, young artist nights and residencies.
