HK BBQ Master is tucked away in an unassuming spot of a shopping complex. Richmond is North America's most Asian (and Chinese) city, so you know you are going to have a great meal here. Before it has even opened, there is already a line of a dozen people. Well, it's actually two lines. The line to the left is dining in, while the line to the right is for takeout. Fortunately, someone in line tells us to write our name on the clipboard. Minutes later, our group is seated in two tables and we order the same thing, a couple plates of their superb Cantonese roast meats. BBQ Pork, Soy Chicken, and BBQ Duck: The first plate contains char siu, soy sauce chicken, and roast duck. They ask you how fatty or lean you want the char siu to be. We ask for a mix, and this doesn't disappoint. The meat is thick, rich, and tender with perfectly glazed, sticky, and charred edges. The roast duck is great, so plump and meaty. BBQ Pork, Soy Chicken, and Roast Pork: The next plate has soy chicken, roast pork, and also char siu (you can never have enough). The skin on the roast pork is really crispy and packs a pleasing punch. The soy sauce chicken is a crowd pleaser. I'm not usually a fan of soy chicken, but the flavors are insanely good and the meat is extremely juicy and succulent. Topped with green scallion ginger oil, the chicken is outstanding. The rice soaks up the juices and flavors from all the meats and it sort of a treat on its own. Greens: The Chinese broccoli is a nice green balance to all the rich delicious meat. Parking: The Superstore parking lot is large and chaotic.
HK BBQ Master - name checks out. Our group arrived on a weekend night, and the wait was ~ 15 minutes. While there was about an hour left in the day, the duck was sold out... kind of. So, our group ended up ordering the BBQ pork, and roast pork. Everything tasted great, and there is also extra sauce for rice, if desired. One thing to note that are standard at some good spots is that service might be rude, and our hostess and servers were no different. On the topic of "kind of" sold out duck... we later learned after being sat that there was suddenly duck available... but there was no way to order this. Outside of the BBQ meat, we also had soup, and it was very tasty - the pull-apart pork especially. One unforgettable part of the evening was that the servers gave our group attitude for not ordering one full meal per person at the table. Even judging by pictures, the size of one meal is quite large, enough to comfortably feed two. (We saw several parties walk out with takeaways...) Perhaps this is why they kept giving our table attitude, though.
Holy shit you gotta get the chicken. DO NOT OVERLOOK THE CHICKEN IM TELLING YOU. Get the char siu pork and chicken here then go get the crispy pork and duck from I forgot the other place down the road that's the ultimate 1-2
HK BBQ is tucked in the parking lot for the Real Canadian Superstore and the store is pretty small with around 20 seats, but they have a to-go window as well. No wait to be seated on a weekday at 11AM. Decently close to the trolley station as well so it's walkable if you're rolling on public transit. Here's the thing, you can have a 3 star or 5 star experience depending on your order. The roast goose was pretty mid, too chewy and a bit gamey. The roast pork skin was so crunchy that it was almost hard to eat and the meat itself was also slightly tough. However, the char siu and soy sauce chicken here are life changingly good. Char siu is so fatty that it pretty much melts in your mouth and the outside is the perfect balance of sweet and savory. The soy sauce chicken is just incredible. The scallion oil is the perfect bright complement to the uber tender, almost slippery chicken. Genuinely didn't think soy sauce chicken could be the best item at a Chinese bbq place, but HK BBQ showed me how it's done.
Came here to get some delicious bbq and this place was amazing. We ordered the mixed half fatty half lean BBQ pork which just melted in your mouth but was not too fatty. The soy sauce chicken was perfectly cooked and moist and flavorful. We also ordered the duck and roast pork and we couldn't decide what to eat more of. We came with a party of 9 and all six dishes and bones were licked clean. Staff is great at getting orders, refilling drinks, and turning the tables so people aren't waiting long. Plus the food is ready to go. Will definitely come back here again. Remember cash only. We only had US dollars and they accommodated us.
No frills and worth the hype! Our family of six arrived at 12 pm on a Tuesday. We waited approximately 25 minutes which is not bad at all considering how popular this small restaurant is. My mom is vegetarian and my girls had a wonton noodle soup lunch at another spot down the street. So we ordered a few things mainly for my dad, husband and myself: 1) Platter with barbecue pork and chicken (雙拼叉燒香油雞) 2) Half-order of roast duck (半隻脆皮燒鴨) 3) late of roast pork (燒肉) 4) Bowl of rice (一碗米飯) We cleared everything. The meats were juicy, tender, and flavorful. My girls are usually indifferent to Cantonese barbecued meats but they tried it and enjoyed everything as well. This is definitely a place to repeat if and when we revisit Vancouver.
This was my family and wife's first stop in Vancouver and frankly, nothing has topped it yet. You're getting some of the best HK BBQ possible. They ran out of duck but do not fret because the soya chicken is where it's at. The soya chicken is incredibly tender, even the breast meat is tender. Secondly, it's perfectly marinated and if you dab a little of their homemade soy sauce, it's even better. Eat this with rice and you'll never want another meal in your life. This was easily our favorite dish for the place. Bbq pork and crispy pork are both spot on as well. They give generous and juicy cuts and the crispy pork is, well, crispy. The skin is a nice crunch and the meat is juicy, what more could you ask for? I still salivate and dream of the meat here and I wish we had something like this back in LA cause I don't know who else would make soy chicken as good as here. Cash only so come prepared! If you're a US tourist, they take USD as well but canadian is still the better deal.
Great roasted pork and amazing chicken. Food is so delicious and service is great. Staffs are very friendly. Even it's a tiny restaurant with limited space, you don't feel crowded. I hope NY has good hk style bbq like this one. I miss the food there already!
Did you even *really* come to Richmond if you didn't stop by here? This restaurant is recommended by every single person in my life who has gone to Richmond, and there's an obvious reason why: the meat is delicious! For the amount of food that you get, it's a fantastic deal. My friends and I came about 30 minutes before they closed one day, so unfortunately we couldn't order duck. However, we did get their bbq pork and chicken, and all of it didn't disappoint. Coming from the US (although originally from Vancouver), it was also my first experience talking to really nice Chinese aunties. What a pleasure, and a change from what I'm using to (I say that in a lovingly way). Come on an empty stomach, and leave happy. You won't regret it!
pretty solid rice bowl, i got a half and half crispy pork and cha siu. i definitely recommend ordering ahead for pickup and just eating at the mall next door food court. honestly i didn't even finish all the rice and this was a rec given by friends who have visited before!
Most Googled HK BBQ spot in Richmond... so you know I had to pull up HK BBQ Master Ordered everything to-go and went all in: 3-meat over rice (duck, soy chicken, char siu) 2-meat over rice (roasted pork + char siu) First things first--ASK FOR EXTRA ginger scallion oil. Trust me. That sauce alone elevates everything Crispy pork, juicy duck, sweet-savory char siu... solid across the board. Nothing fancy, but it hits the spot every time. And honestly? This was the first place we went to in Vancouver and it didn't disappoint. Located in a parking structure, the location can be slightly difficult to find, but parking is actually easy. There are separate lines for takeout and dine in. We got the #6 and #8 combos. The roast and bbq pork were great and I liked the roast duck a lot as well. Flavor and crunch were good and no need to add salt. Services was quick and the noisy bustle inside reminded me of restaurants in Asia. Cash or debit only though, so come prepared.
After plentiful recommendations for what otherwise resembles a hole in the wall, HK BBQ Masters is solid. I tried a 3 meat plate with rice and an iced milk tea. The BBQ pork here is a step change better than most. It's succulent, tender, savoury, and ever so sweet. The chicken and duck were good too, but not in the same "step change" way (and I personally found the bones and it's fragments annoying to eat around). Great, friendly service, but the temperature of my food was lukewarm to cool suggesting it wasn't all that fresh. Regardless, this place is certainly worth a try!

Best Chinese bbq in richmond! Worth the line up. Cash only. The garlic oil brings out the taste so well too. They didn't use to charge for it but now it's $1 extra. The portions are smaller too. The service is abrupt but I think that's expected. I recommend ordering ahead for faster pick up. read more

It is as ok. That's about all I can really say. We drove up from Seattle and stopped here for lunch. Appreciated all the reviews. Parking was a little nuts being in the same place as a supermarket but it worked out with some patience. Definitely a well run kitchen with quick turnaround. We were in line and served in 5 minutes. As for the food, it was exactly as other Yelpers had described, just s little too greasy for me. read more

Mm-mm-MMM!! Here is the ultimate meat oasis of Chinese BBQ! This hole-in-the-wall is tucked in the parking garage of Canadian Superstore. A warm aura radiates from the window of the restaurant, showcasing their renowned BBQ meats. An absolutely mesmerizing sight. Then there's the daunting, long line of patrons. Luckily, staff function at a fast pace to move the line along. Service works in Cantonese, limited English, and my favorite - pointing at food on the menu! We tried it all: BBQ pork. Roasted pork. BBQ duck. Soya chicken. All plump, juicy, tender, and unctuous. Hypnotic seasoning. All topped off with delicious sauteed green onions. Honestly, words won't do their food justice. This place is super popular. We got here just when they opened and there were about 10 people there for take out. There is a separate line for dine in which we opted for. They brought us tea right away. My favorites were the soup of the day (papaya) and the chicken rice. Service was quick and simple. read more
Fantastic lunch at a decent price. Walked in and was immediately greeted by a staff member who ushered us to our seat very quickly. Its a pretty busy shop with sit down service and a long take out line, but the two parts are separated so not to stressful. I ordered the BBQ duck + lean char siu plate and it was fantastic. I've actually very rarely had skin that crispy on a BBQ duck. The char siu was a little dry, but that might be expected on a leaner cut of char siu. The marinade on the char siu was very good though. The rice was also very fluffy and went super well with the meat drippings & sweet soy sauce that was available on the table. I would definitely return here for a quick lunch or dinner next time I'm in Richmond! read more
I'm glad we gave this place another shot, as our previous encountered wasn't as good. Upon entering the establishment, there's 2 doors. The one on the left is for the dine-in. Make sure you put down your name on the list and they will call you as there's available table. The tables move quick as people seem to eat and then go, which is much appreciated. This is not the place for people to sit a long time abs chit-chat. There's ample food to share, my sisters and I ordered the two 3-meats dish and the free-range chicken to share and it was more than enough. Every table order a side of the cai lan as on each dish, you get one broccoli. Service and food was impeccable and satisfying. The door to the right of the establishment is to order to-go. There was quite a line build up, and there's a very kind man who comes out and write down everyone's orders on a small paper, provide answers to any questions and recommendations. He's very nice and pleasant. True meaning of great customer service. I would totally recommend this place. The free-range chicken and duck was my favorite. read more
This is a small restaurant known for its BBQ. This place is busy. The reasons the bba is so good. I ordered the tri BBQ combo, a dish of oyster sauce vegetables, and a bowl of daily soup. They all tasted so good. All of the servers are friendly. There is a bottle if sweet soy sauce you can put onto your rice. It raised the level of taste to a whole new level. read more
This place be asking for tips upfront like I'm back in San Gabriel Valley in LA. When I paid my dine-in bill in cash, the waitress made sure to tell me in Chinese that I needed to pay tip. I responded with, "Don't restaurants collect dine-in tip at the end?" She realized that I'm not straight from China (where tip is not a norm), then quickly nodded and walked away. That waitress has since been forgiven because the food is just THAT good here!! We ordered the 3-item combo with rice that comes with chicken, roast duck, and honey bbq pork. We also ordered a side of roast pork, seasonal veggies, and iced lemon tea. It was just enough for 2 people and the food was so comforting. Everything came out to be about $55 CAD, which isn't too bad but I can see why locals claim this is more expensive than other Cantonese bbq places in town. As of Aug 2023, this place is still CASH ONLY. Lastly, here are some tips you should know if this is your first time visiting. The lines usually start before opening time at 11am. Make sure to put your name down on a sign-in sheet by the entrance, which is found INSIDE the garage (NOT the entrance by the street). They have two entrances, so make sure you're going to the right one. The restaurant itself is extremely small, but the line moves fast because customers tend to just eat then leave asap. Don't bring your large bags in here because there won't be space to put them. There is also a line for takeout, which is a great alternative if you don't want to eat in a claustrophobic space. This is always my last stop before I head to the Canadian/US border. I wish the Chinese BBQ restaurants in Seattle were as good as this place. There's two very exceptional ones in Richmond, B.C. and this is one of them. On one visit, I spent almost $150 US dollars here. I love bringing back food for myself and my family. My favorites are the Roast Pork and Soya Sauce Chicken. If you're buying for the family, get a whole Soya Sauce Chicken. The chicken is soaked in the marinade and you can taste it throughout the chicken. The crispy skin on the roast pork has a perfect crunch and the fat to meat ratio gives it a tender piece every time you bite into it. If you're just buying for yourself, get the #10 combination, which comes with roast pork, soya sauce chicken, and BBQ pork. It's the best of everything and you'll be so happy you got it. The only thing I didn't like is their Roast Duck. Maybe it doesn't travel well or it's a one-off, but when I got back home to Seattle, the roast duck was too salty for my family and my taste. I would stick with the chicken. Since this is always my last stop before heading back to the states, I have always ordered everything to go. On my next trip, I'll need to stay and eat there at their expanded/remodeled space. I'll have to order the roast duck again to give it another shot. read more

Day three of our BC Asian food tour took us to HK BBQ Master. We ordered the 2 meat plate with barbecue pork and roasted pork served over rice. Both porks were delicious, with great flavor and the roasted pork was super crispy (tho wish there was a little less Fat and gristle). We will definitely stop by HK again next time we're in Richmond. Interesting location inside the parking garage. read more
HK BBQ Master Naming yourself the Master or in Chinese the "famous master" takes severe dose of confidence. Or...someone set out to be precisely that. Along the way, a little arrogance set in and fell off the path. These days, HK BBQ Master seems to be reapplying efforts to reclaim the bbq crown in YVR. This is my updated review of HK BBQ Master. Found the service expedient for take out. There was no attitude, no power trips, no sassiness. Had the 2 bbq mix on rice, and my dinning associate had bbq duck with roast pork. Perfection and deliciousness. We had more duck (1/4) than the "entire" duck from iDen & Quan Ju De Beijing Duck House. Plus 10x tastier! 15% the cost. How crazy is that? And how fair is this world? HK BBQ Master has reformed. Seems to have dropped the attitude and adopted humbleness. Welcoming news. Recommend. read more
A must stop every time we're in the area! You can't go wrong with any of their meats. Keep in mind that it's cash only and there's two separate lines, one for dine in and one for takeout. Only accept cash or debit so keep that in mind. We were able to walk over to the ATM at the grocery store next door and get cash, so no big deal. The food was delicious. The roasted pork belly was perfectly crispy. Would definitely recommend! The place is small but once we were seated our food came out fast. read more

wow. so simple. but oh so good. it is a small place and gets busy fast. we waited for a bit for a table of 2. but once they sit you down, they take your order right away! which is super nice. i tried their #6 combo: bbq pork and roasted pork on rice. it was so good! the pork was so soft and full flavor! if i haven't been eating all day, i def would try more on the menu. that's for another vancouver visit! i will def come back here. cash only! read more

I usually not a fan of roast pork, but let me tell you this is the best and the most fresh roast pork I've ever tasted. MUST TRY! I recommend to only buy the roasted pork per lb to go rather than dining in. read more

CASH ONLY! We saw a huge line on our first day in BC when visiting the Real Canadian Superstore but didn't think much about it until a friend highly recommended trying this restaurant out before we left LOL. So of course, we had to make our way here too. It's located next to Hunan Kitchen and Fukuroku Sushi Express on the first floor of the the Real Canadian Superstore in Richmond. There's a parking garage with ample parking. My boyfriend and I got our meal as take out and took it back to Seattle. I know, I messed up for not eating it fresh, but we were already soooo full from all the other foods. Saaad. But we had to make our way here to check it out at least! And thankfully we did because this restaurant was relatively good! We ordered the two 1-choices of the Roasted Pork and BBQ Duck. The chefs chopped the roast pork and duck right in front of us after ordering. Loved the transparency! Both of them had a ton of meat which I didn't expect but definitely was not complaining. Chinese style, especially Hong Kong style, BBQ ducks are usually my favorite kind whenever I hung out with my family back home. So I was super excited to taste it! However, the pieces that I got were all bones. I was super bummed about that. There wasn't much meat for the pieces I got saaaad. I got the unlucky draw of the duck this time around. But the flavor wasn't too bad especially with the sauce it came with. The roast pork, on the other hand, was very good! Kind of oily but the flavor wasn't too salty nor bland. Many places I've been to had really salty roast pork, so I was surprised by this one! My boyfriend LOVED it and almost didn't want to share with me LOL. Pretty great place for REALLY reasonable prices and huge portions! I definitely need to come back and dine in the next time. The freshness of the food makes a HUGE difference, so I definitely will be back when I make my way up to BC again! read more

I was so sad we only had enough cash for one dish. So had to make the most of it by getting the bbq pork and roast pork over rice. One of the more must stop places in Richmond for a reason. The bbq pork was out of this world as we opted for the fatty option and it had so much flavor and juicy. Addicting sauce and not red like most you'll see out there. Honestly, I thought we had ordered duck. But I have to try the bbq duck next time. The roast pork I didn't like as much as the bbq but still solid. You park in the garage of the place and enter from the inside of garage and not outside near the street. Separately lines for takeout and dine-in. Dine in was not super huge so not large group friendly. read more

Came late around 730pm on a Friday evening. A lot of the items were sold out. Eating here was cramp as it only sits 2 or 4 people max. We were party of 8 so they divided our group. The floor is slippery. Soya sauce chicken was good with plain rice. Only 1 stem of broccoli given. CASH ONLY The HK nai cha tea was underwhelming and i don't recommend it. read more

3.5 stars. Tender meats. - duck, roasted pork, BQQ pork and soy sauce chicken. It was ok. The meats were tender but not much flavors or spices. I only taste saltiness which was not too salty. Mind spices. I had much better BQQ elsewhere. read more
This is the best HK BBQ place ever! Every time I visit Canada, I make it an effort to order here. The meat is packed with incredible flavor and is never dry and always tender and roasted to perfection. There are lines are always out the door for a reason, but pro tip is that you can call in ahead of time or place your order online. My favorite is the duck, roasted pork, soy sauce chicken, char siu, and free range chicken - and yes I named pretty much everything on the menu! read more
The staff here are the sweetest and very kind. The service is quick and it does get busy pretty fast. And the ambiance of the restaurant was cozy and clean. Their most popular dishes tend to sell out by lunch time. The wait for the food, whether you're picking up or dining in is worth the wait! The duck was so moist and skin crunchy. The sweetness of the bbq pork is out of this world. The leaner pieces provide the joy you get like while eating jerky. The more you chew, the more flavor comes out and it goes really well with rice and their sauce. And the roasted pork was my favorite; moist, slightly salty and skin crunchy. The both times we came, we always grabbed the soup of the day which was usually melon soup. Def a place to try. And they have plenty of parking. read more

3.5 Stars Visited on a Thursday at around 430pm and there was no wait. I had high expectations coming in after hearing all the rave reviews. It was a bit underwhelming to be honest. The prices were reasonable when converted to USD, but portion sizes were on the smaller side. We tried all the meats and nothing really stood out. Our meal was good, but not great. I think we have better BBQ meats here in the Bay Area. The iced milk tea that we ordered was pretty good and affordable. I'm still glad we came here as it was on our must-do list. read more

Woooow!! Talk about the best bbq pork chasu I've ever had in my entire life!! I'm still regretting not getting more after taking my first bite. I've never had anything like this. Perfectly seasoned with a sweet Caramelized texture and flavor. Totally moist and juicy!! Tasted like they just killed the pig! Bbq pork came as part of a combo meal and also included duck and soy sauce chicken. I've had better duck in the Bay Area so I would pass on that one. But the soy sauce chicken was very fresh, tasty and good. An added bonus was the discount from the delivery app that is posted on the window. If you order thru the app, you can avoid paying cash, esp if you're from out of the country. Also, even better is that you get to skip the line and they prepare your food immediately upon arrival! I would DEFINITELY return if in the area. Have already been referring my friends to this place :) who are visiting soon! read more
Every time I visit the Canadian Superstore in Richmond, I see a huge line snaking out the door of HK BBQ Master. I finally had a chance to try their master's food over the weekend. Parking was relatively easy to find in the covered spaces underneath the Canadian Superstore. I chose to dine in, so there was a bit of a wait for a table, roughly 30 minutes. The takeout line was also very long. I tried the three item combo, a soup of the day, and a steamed vegetable dish. The total came out to $30 CAD, which I thought was reasonable. The BBQ tasted good, probably in the top 20% of the BBQ places I have been to. The only complaint for the food was the fact that the skin of the roast duck was not crunchy. The service of this place is a 3/5. There were only three servers at this restaurant and they were constantly running around trying to manage all the diners. In fact, they were so rushed that they spilled water on two different occasions when I was eating there. When I was ready for the check, I had to wait another 10 minutes after waving down a server. Also during the middle of our lunch, the server grabbed our soy sauce bottle, and give it to another table who needed one. She did not even ask if we were finished with the soy sauce, so I thought that was rather rude. Overall, just like most other Chinese restaurants in the area, do not expect stellar service, but the food is pretty good. Note that this place takes only cash as payment. read more
Some of the best duck I've had outside of China. It is reasonably priced as well, so you don't have to break the bank to get something authentic. You will need cash here. It's not the place to bust out an American Express or Chase Sapphire Reserve. The flavor is rich and hard to describe if you haven't had duck before. It's very fatty so if you like meats with a lot of weight and complex tastes, this is for you! Strongly recommend this and wish I had something similar near me. read more

I visited Richmond a couple of months ago and don't fully remember what I ordered. However, I do remember that I thoroughly enjoyed the food. It was so flavorful and tender, and I was pretty happy with the large portion. I shared this with someone, and we were both full after the meal. I thought the staff were efficient, and it was really cool to see the quick pace and the busyness of the ambiance. It was busy when I had went since there was a list to write your name down. For getting a meal at 3pm, it was quite busy, but I can certainly understand why. I'd definitely go again. read more
A friend strongly recommended that my family & I come here during our vacation and I am so glad we did! The food tastes AMAZING and you have to check this place out if you're in town. We had to wait a little bit because the place was packed but that just shows how good the food is. I heard that Hk style bbq place is a must try spot when you're in Richmond BC! I came here for lunch one day when I was visiting. Pretty long wait. Lol... the taste is alright but for me and my friend a bit too salty. It's like the boarder line of salty. But it was still good. Most other bbq places would give extra veggie lol but this spot a piece of broccoli that was interesting. But I guess every restaurant is different! Overall, decent place if you want to try some HK bbq. Only cons I would say is that they only accept CASH! So make sure to bring some CAD with you or USD. They will help you convert it as well. Hands down, best HK BBQ I've ever had. This place is a no fuss, straight up get your BBQ and get out type of place. Yes, it's crowded during primetime because it's that good. But I feel like people get in and get out so it moves. We came at 3 PM on Friday and there was no line so we were seated immediately. Got lucky. Got all 4 meats: Favorite was CRISPY PORK --) DUCK --) Chicken --) Roasted Pork. Don't get me wrong, all of them were fantastic but the crispy pork was just cooked to perfection and that skin was so crispy and nothing was greasy which is so hard. Duck - the texture was spot on and flavors were so good. Chicken - again, texture and the cook was spot on. It was so moist and it was almost cooked sous vide style but the beauty was it wasn't and tasted just like it!!! Cash only. Worth the drive here. read more

Best tasting Chinese food that I had so far and I have ate at great restaurants. Food was amazing and service was quick and to the point the restaurant was bust at lunch time but the wait was less than 5 mins. If you are ever in Richmond, Vancouver BC. This place is a must try. read more
