Chang Fen how I love thee. Such a simple dish but when done well, it's transcendent, at least for me! For those that don't know, Chang Fen is a silky and soft steamed rice noodle that's made in a sheet, filled, and then rolled up and served with a savory soy sauce and chili oil. Classic fillings include shrimp, beef, pork, and veggies, but there are many other combinations, and Yin Ji introduced me to my new favorite, pork and olive! We also had to enjoy a "frozen HK milk tea" with it! Frozen here = chilled and it's served in a big bowl of ice so you don't dilute the rich flavor of the tea! As a non Chinese speaker in a rich Chinatown, service and communication can be challenging but that was not the case here at all! The staff was so welcoming, happily spoke English and helped us where necessary and made the visit incredible! It started because we saw signs saying cash only, but had not exchanged USD, and they quickly told us CC was welcome with an added fee, which we happily paid. This place is the real deal if you are looking for authentic Cantonese food. From the moment you walk in, everyone is speaking Cantonese and it immediately feels legit. They also give you free hot tea, which is always a huge plus and sets the tone right away. I ordered the beef and shrimp rice noodle roll along with the Hong Kong style milk tea. The rice roll was honestly perfect. Super smooth, delicate texture, great balance of beef and shrimp, and seasoned exactly how it should be. I genuinely cannot think of anything they could have done better with it. It tasted just like what you would expect from a proper Cantonese spot. The Hong Kong style milk tea was hot and strong. A fairly popular chain across Canada and US. Nonetheless I was craving some rice noodle rolls so this place was ideal as we went fairly late for dinner and most of these places are primarily lunch service. This place can get busy as they restrict dining to 45 minutes during busy times, but it wasn't busy when we went. But this means that food should arrive quickly, and it did (within 5 minutes of ordering) so this is ideal for a quick, casual meal We got the truffle paste with pork and shrimp rice noodle rolls, dough stick roll, cold fish skin, and "frozen" Hong Kong milk tea. The rice noodle rolls were decent. The truffle one had strong truffle flavor and the rice noodle roll is on the mushier side for my liking. However, the one with dough stick was excellent and the sauces add up the flavors very well. The cold fish skin dish is recommended and had a nice bouncy texture that is somewhat similar to that in jellyfish, and it tastes spicy but not really. The frozen HK milk tea is purely for pictures because I would not justify a $3CAD (almost the price of the hot HK milk tea itself!) premium for the cold option again. For a sit down casual restaurant, prices were a bit high. You can pay with cash or Canadian debit at no extra charge, but US debit or credit cards in general there is a $2CAD surcharge, so they do take credit cards at a fee now! read more

I'll try to be as mindful as possible when writing this review. I firstly will start out with the fact that this place is not consistent, super over hyped and incredibly pricey. I'm not sure if i just got a bad can of vita but it tasted incredibly flat and it was at room temperature even though they took it out of the fridge. The deep fried buns weren't that good but as you can see they barely give you condensed milk too. I've had this dish at a ton of other restaurants for cheaper and with a whole lot more of condensed milk and the buns would actually taste fried and hot. The rice rolls were really thick and barely any filling inside. And with the price point being pretty steep compared to a lot of rice roll places in the city. I don't see how the price is even justified. My rice rolls legit had 3 shrimp inside total .. i was pretty shocked. The congee was bland and pretty runny. Barely any pork. The stewed beef brisket soup was probably the only thing that was actually good? Considering i normally don't even eat beef brisket but for the price point i wouldn't really drive out to eat it here again. The parking is very limited outside and the staff knows minimal english. We've been to Yin Ji several times over the past few years and have always walked away happy. We always go for breakfast, ordering a couple of soy milk, Chinese donut, and either a bowl of congee or one of the rice rolls. The restaurant is pretty spacious and the service is your typical no frill, no nonsense, place your order and you get your food piping hot and fast. Since we've only been there for breakfast, we've never had any issue with their parking. But been to that same plaza for dinner in one of the other restaurants, parking definitely a headache later in the day. We did get the Hong Kong rice rolls with the side of sauce which were good but we quickly got tired of it. So I would highly recommend just ordering the rice rolls with filling! I'm surprised that after living in Richmond all my life, I have only just tried this wonderful Chinese rice roll and snack place. We arrived on a Sunday morning and were lucky to snag a spot as they became packed by noon. We ordered 6 dishes (only took pictures of 5 oops) and everything tasted good! Although nothing blew my mind, this food is made to satisfy comfort cravings and eating it alone made me really happy. My favourites are the pork knuckles lo mein, the chicken feet, and the truffle shrimp and pork roll. My cousins from out of town were eating with me and they agreed that everything was good and that this type of food is basically non-existent in Calgary (rip). I also love the variety and think this is a great place to satisfy Cantonese snack cravings. Our total for 6 dishes plus a drink came to about $95 before tip and we were all pretty full. Yin Ji Chang Fen absolutely lived up to the hype. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by a wall of awards...and after trying the food, it all makes sense. Ordering is done through a notepad, which was surprisingly fun and a little nostalgic. I loved being able to mix and match exactly what I wanted.
