Dropped by for a Sunday lunch - place was packed, as most dim sum related places would be. Service was good, however some dishes (pan fried bun) toke a questionable amount of time to arrive. Pan fried bun - long wait to receive, pretty greasy inside - however had a nice crunch to the bun. XLB - standard, the soup within was pretty tasty , watch out for the temperature as usual. Crab Claw - No idea why we decided to have this as lunch, was pretty impulsive - did take some time to arrive , very meaty , so nothing to complain about. Fried Tofu - was the dish highlight, nice crisp with a warm soft interior, spiced to perfection! Wine drunken Chicken - was soft and juicy, however aside from the cooking wine taste, there wasn't anything more to add. Shanghai River was a great meal overall. I came specifically for the sheng jian bao and was pretty satisfied. It's not quite as good as what you'd get in China, but definitely not bad -- and there was actual soup inside, which I appreciated. The Peking duck was solid, and I loved that they served it with thin wrappers instead of buns. Way less filling and lets the duck shine. It's been 15 years since my last review here and I wasn't sure if the quality of food would remain the same, but it has! The service here is fantastic and so is the food- not oily, too saucy, or too salty. Everything here was delicious. We had Peking duck (two ways) which includes Peking duck with the thin wrap, and duck meat sautéed for lettuce wraps, 3 lbs of lobster with noodle, pork shoulder braised served with spinach, soup dumplings, ham and salted veggie rice, and a Shanghainese soup with salted ham and bamboo. The later time is when my friends invite us to join them to try the Peking duck which was recommended by another friend. We had Peking duck, Siew long bao, braised ling cod tail, and sautés string bean. The Peking duck skin was cut with lots of meat. Skin+meat style rather than skin only style. The wrapper is a bit thick and turns very chewy after a short while when it gets cooled. The fish was fishy. I can smell it when it was served. Even though it was not that bad when eaten. I've always come to this restaurant whenever I'm in the area, probably bc I had really good experience the first time I came and it really reminded me of the food in HK. But, I'm not sure if the quality goes down the year or I haven't been ordering the right dishes, the food is not as good as what I remembered. This recent experience I ordered the chicken with wine sauce, scallion pancake, Shanghai rice cake, oyster and rice in clay pot. My all time favorite is the chicken with wine sauce. It has a really strong wine taste that goes to the chicken, although some parts of the chicken were undercooked since you see redness in the bone. The scallion pancake is good. It comes in multiple later. I probably would've like it more if it's crispy. The Shanghai rice cake was not that good. I think they overcooked the rice cake and it is soggy and clumps together. The taste of the dish is typical. The oyster with rice clay pot was alright. It's really bland. When I ordered it a few years ago, they used mini oyster and now they use thumb size oyster, which is good. But they really need some salt to the dish. Last time, I ordered the lobster with vermicelli and it was delicious The service is good and I like how the place is spacious, not overly crowded. Slightly upscale Shanghai spot that has free parking spots available in the nearby parkade. We didn't made a reservation but my friend and I walked in on a Friday night and was able to get a table for 2 after a 8 minute wait. We ordered the Xiao long baos, 2 types of appetizer combo (cold Jellyfish and cold chicken peanut cucumber noodle salad), braised beef noodle soup and dan dan noodles. Everything was really good and we were pleasantly surprised. We had leftovers but was hard to decide on a favourite dish. They served really nice complimentary tea and were gracious enough to give us each our own vinegar sauce dish. Highly recommend! Great place for authentic Shanghai food. Was talented for a lunch o celebrate a birthday. The restaurant is huge and very comfortable. In the middle is the dumpling make station so you can see them making their famous XLB. We ordered XLB, pan fried dumpling, fried rice cakes, duck with taro (my friend says this is the best place for this dish), wonton soup, cold noodles with sesame paste and the black vinegar ribs (which we all didn't like this weekend. My friend says it is normally the best). Service was a little off too as the servers brought items to our table we didn't order. However, the manager was nice and we were allowed to bring in cake to celebrate and they were not rushing us out. I would come back to try again. Ive been here several times over the years. But food quality seems to have gone down. Not sure what has happened to them. We went on a Saturday night, no reservations. Waited about 30 mins but eventually got a table. Service was fine, as expected for a place like this. Get a reservation if you want to wait less. We ordered: pork XLB - big, juicy, but the skin was inconsistent, some broken, some parts evenly cooked, other parts mushy. 3/5. hot + sour soup - this seems to have changed drastically - weirdly sweet, not very sour. This was a pretty reliable dish for me before but definitely not good now - 2/5. wonton soup - fine, simple dumplings in a light broth with some spinach - normally I wouldnt get this but we just wanted something simple and comforting and this hit the spot - 4/5 broccoli with eggwhites/crabmeat - this dish took forever to come and and not sure why. The egg white texture was good. Broccoli was cooked well. But lacking in crab meat and any umami or depth of flavour. Extremely bland and disappointing. for around $30, this was a big rip off. 2/5. shredded chicken and noodle cold dish - another staple I would order frequently. This was also disappointing now. Noodles undercooked and hard. Peanut sauce lacked any flavour bedsides peanut butter. Literally tasted like they slapped shredded chicken, hard noodles, and a tablespoon of regular cheap peanut butter together. 2/5. I wanted the Sheng jian bao but they were sold out. Free parking in the parkade right next to them. I dont know what happened, but for a Shanghai spot that used to be quite good and reliable, it is now sub-par. I came here for a late lunch on a whim. It's walking distance from Richmond Brighouse Skytrain Station. Staff were polite and greeted me upon entry....even though I came in a half hour before they closed lunch operations. The food was delicious, flavorful and not salty. Who would have thought the wait for dim sum on a Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. would be two hours. Hard pass! It's been close to ten years since my last visit. It's funny how long it took for me to come back, consider I've always liked this place. Came in for a Saturday lunch at noon, with reservations, we were seated within couple of minutes. We decided to go for a bunch of dim sum team instead of going with more formal dishes like the taro chicken or Beijing duck. Oh boy it was a good choice. Everything we had was fantastic, siu mai, pan fried pork bun, xlb, shagnahi vegetable rice.. to the superb salt pepper tofu, turnip pastry is also very well made, just crispy and flakey on the outside, and subtle flavored filling that's perfectly matched. Came here with my partner for dinner and it was perfect for a rainy day. When we came Shanghai River was busy but they were able to seat us right away! We ordered the Xiao Long Bao and Wonton Soup. The Xiao Long Bao was wonderful; we ordered two of them and the Wonton Soup was plentiful for just the two of us! The Wonton Soup kept us warm as we were freezing and filled us up. Had dinner reservations at 7:30 for a party of 11. We waited roughly 13 minutes, as the entire restaurant was packed!! There is a parking lot next door with spaces for guests of the restaurant but if you have a larger car, you might need to allow time to park elsewhere. Their decor is modern and well lit and seating can be tight but varies based on number of guests per table. Service was good for the most part. Reservations are a must for this place! My husband called to make reservations for dinner and the person that took the reservation over the phone let us know that they are really busy, so we were asked to be punctual. We got to the restaurant right on time and we were seated right away. We were served Oolong tea as we were checking out the menu and trying to decide what to order. Their menu consists mostly of traditional Chinese food, so we were not sure what to order. Our waiter was very helpful and helped us decide on what to order. I knew from reading the reviews that it was a good place to go eat and I also knew I had to order their dumplings. The dumplings were the most delicious dumplings I've ever had. Reservations are recommended. It was busy at 5:30pm on a Friday evening. We were seated at a large round table in a dining room behind the reception desk. With just four tables it was very comfortable and quieter than the main dining room. I appreciated the coat stand beside the table to hold all of our winter coats. We ordered: Pan fried bean tips- a luscious green veg dish-very fresh $28 5/5 Tofu and shrimp Steak-and bao 4/5 Noodles 5/5 $21 Cuttlefish appetizer-$14. Very very small portion, it's really only for 2-3 people. Rice $3 a bowl The restaurant is a block away from the Sheraton and Marriott airport hotels and it was only a five minute walk away. Service is slightly above average. I expected more. We had to ask for water refill, waited for service render etc. XLB - well done. Good amount of soup inside. Bun's wrap was perfect as well. Pan fried bun - It was pretty good. I've had better and it lacks of soup inside. Shanghainese chow mien - Good ingredients but some how taste different than the authentic one I've tried. And it lacks of sauce/flavor and I prefer my food less salty. Veggie rice - I'm picky with my veggie rice. This place did it the right way but compared to the best I've had, the rice lacks of the salty pork/veggie flavor. When they stir fry the pork, they should use the excess oil to add to the rice and mix the flavor so to enrich the rice with the salty pork flavor. Or after the rice was cooked, as the stir fried veggie and salt pork mix with the rice (not touching the crispy bottom) and then cook a little more allowing the flavor to soak into the rice. All in all, it's an authentic Shanghainese restaurant but I've had better. I can see the pride in the owner/manager. I doubt they will make the improvements. Five stars is not enough to do this restaurant justice. My favorite was a 3-course Peking duck. For the main part, every piece had the perfect pre prepped ratio of meat to skin. The quality was fantastic, perfectly crispy and not too fatty. For the second, they had a stir fry + lettuce wrap situation with the rest of the meat, which I hadn't seen before and totally loved!! Lastly, we added the duck bone soup which also had a ton of meat and fresh flavor. For the other dishes, they were super authentic as approved by my parents who grew up in Beijing! Last time we had that food as true-to-taste was in China itself. The food came into super fast. The portions were ginormous that we were stuffed and had enough leftovers for another whole meal per person. If you're thinking bang for buck, it might even have been the most cost effective meal of our trip, for amazing quality food. For logistics: There is a ton of garage parking space just for the restaurant. Also, make a reservation!!! We walked in without one and got SUPER lucky that there was a reservation no-show right before us. Even with how busy it was, every staff member was incredibly attentive and professional, but still down to earth and homey, where it almost felt like being hosted by extended family. They answered our questions thoroughly and proactively; they even brought out the uncooked marble govy fish we were thinking of getting so we could see it for ourselves. Pretty good XLB and Northern Chinese dishes. I picked this mainly from reading reviews from some of my Yelp friends and I always love trying out new places for soup dumplings, especially while on vacation. Most of these dishes are great for lunch or dinner when served family style. Xiao Long Bao or soup dumplings are the main attraction here. They are freshly by the ladies in the kitchen window as you are led to your table. They are handmade pork meatballs wrapped in a thin rolled dumpling skin and steamed. The soup is jellified or frozen when made and becomes scalding hot inside, so be careful when eating. Gingerly, grab the peak of the pleats with tongs (or chopsticks if you are so skilled) onto your soup spoon and puncture a small hole to let out the hot liquid into the spoon. Wait a few seconds and the rest of the dumpling should be cool enough to eat without burning your mouth and then slurp up the soup. XLB can come in different varieties, but the usual ones are plain pork and pork mixed with crab. The crab innards are a unique taste and makes the soup an orange color. You do get 8 per steamer basket of the regular pork XLB, but the crab only has 5. We also had a couple of noodle & Shanghai rice cake dishes, which were pretty standard to what we're used to, but nothing outstanding. What we should have tried was the Peking Duck, but it wasn't offered at lunch and would have been a little much for lunch. Next time, definitely the duck for dinner! There is a parking garage with an entrance next door and on the street behind with limited dedicated spots. If you want to get a variety of items highly recommend coming here with a group of people. Portions are pretty generous. Food is good. We ordered the Peking duck where you have a choice to either choose duck soup as the second duck presentation or the duck lettuce wraps (similar to moo shu pork presentation) & we chose the duck lettuce wraps. We came here from our cruise ship. Took the sky train from the cruise port. Very very convenient. We also managed to get there when they just opened at 11:00am. It's not one of your high end dim sum places. Decor wasn't the best although you can see into the kitchen that they were making xui long baos. A friend told us to come here for dinner but we decided to come here for lunch. The xui long baos were excellent. Hot with thin skins and juicy. I could have ate three more! We also ordered some sesame cake sandwiches. The bread seemed hollowed out and stayed very crispy. I thought it would be filling but it wasn't. We also had some sliced rice cakes which was okay. And also ordered some deep fried tofu - also good but you can never go wrong with any fried food. We also had some pork belly with preserved veggies. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. Really loved the atmosphere and food from this busy restaurant in Richmond, spending time with family. As this was our first visit to Vancouver, we did not understand that the most popular and well-thought of Chinese food is no longer found in Vancouver's Chinatown, but rather in the city of Richmond, a suburb. We had eaten at a really good Chinese restaurant for lunch the day before, so was really looking forward to comparing it with the cuisine from Richmond. A reservation was placed for 4 the same day, and a spot was found for 7 pm on a Saturday. There are numerous parking garages in the area. The Richmond-Brighouse stop on the Canada line is also very close. We arrived a bit early, but around 7, we were seated at a round table meant for 6, giving us plenty of space to dine family-style. It's beautiful inside, with a huge bar dominating the banquet room. Every table was full, and the maitre'd was turning away customers that didn't have a reservation. Mandarin is predominantly spoken here, thus everyone will speak to you first in that language before switching to English (if they can). The menu is basically a laminated book with full color pictures. We didn't know how big the portions were, so played it safe by ordering 4 dishes (including appetizers). The dishes came out as they were prepared, in the following order: - Steamed Pork Dumplings (8 pieces $13.95) - these are made fresh in front of the restaurant by skilled cooks behind transparent plexiglass. It comes with a dish of vinegar and soy sauce with ginger slivers. The dumplings were superb, with thin skin and a very flavorful sausage with gelatin broth, just the right size proportions. These deserved the full bite treatment to get the mix right, even if meant taking the chance to scald your mouth. A clear winner. - Shanghai Chow Mein ($20.80) - big platter of chewy wheat noodles. It had been expertly coated with a very mild, not too flavorful brown sauce. I've seen this type of noodle be called lo mein. There was a bit of cabbage and pork loin strips to finish the dish. - Szechuan style Prawns ($32.80) - beautifully prepared deshelled prawns in a very simple hot sauce with celery. This was the one dish where each of could have eaten more, but we were all conscious to share. It was great with the accompanying white rice ($2.90 per bowl). - Lettuce Wrap with Beef ($32.80) - the most disappointing dish for the price, it came with 8 cups of very freshly washed iceberg lettuce leaves. The filling was very plentiful...enough was given to easily be 2-3 times the portion of a typical lettuce wrap. However, the chopped beef didn't really work for us, and the small bits of celery did overwhelm the rest of the crunchy ingredients. Both hot water and hot tea were offered immediately as drinks when we sat down, and no water was offered (though I'm sure they would have provided if we asked). They want you to finish your meal at the restaurant, and make it a big point that each carryout container is an extra 30 cents. GST is about 5% and credit cards are readily accepted, with the transaction being complete tableside. All of us really liked this place, and would definitely recommend this to anybody who enjoys Chinese food and wanted to try a good representation if in the Vancouver area. read more

I don't know, compared to the other awesome places in the area, I didn't like this place as much as the other options. Also, we are comparing this place with NYC xiao long bao places. It may be just what we ordered. We had the pan fried pork buns (good), crab and pork xiao lung bao (meh, barely had any crab), pork xiao lung bao (fine), sweet and sour whole fish (excellent), and hand pulled noodles with pork (pretty good). read more

I came up from Seattle looking for Shanghainese food and this place delivered. We were curious about the sweet and sour fish 松鼠鳜鱼 and the manager recommended the fresh goby fish version instead. It was a bit pricy but well worth it. Appetizer portions are huge and I really liked the dumplings that were made fresh as well. I would go back when I am home sick for food or have a larger group to feed and impress. The main dining room has small and big tables for 4 or 8 and they have private rooms as well. Fast service and good food. We got seated thirty minutes before closing and they were more than happy to serve us. All four entrees came out quick and all four were delicious... Cold cuttlefish entrees, crab dumplings, pork dumplings, and Shanghai style noodles.Yummy! read more

One of few places that serves Shanghainese/Taiwanese breakfast. Flavors are spot on and the staff were sweet and patient. We had lots of left overs and I ate them for snacks and dinner! Will return since there were many other dishes I want to try! read more

This is my favorite Shanghai restaurant! The open kitchen is a treat--you can watch them make XLB dumplings fresh. The restaurant is very clean, and the servers are quick to clear empty dishes and constantly top up your teapot. The food here is some of the best in town. Every dish is absolutely delicious, but the Deep-Fried Duck Meat with Taro is a must-try. Highly recommend this spot for amazing Shanghai cuisine! read more

Wow, what a wonderful experience. We arrived for lunch at 1:30 pm on a Saturday and they were packed. Luckily we only had to wait a few minutes for a table. The menu is full of tasty dishes and you should have no trouble finding something you like. You might have to rely on a friend who has been here before to find the best dishes on the menu. We walked from our hotel so I don't know if parking is difficult or not. Service was very good. Everyone here seems to be fluent in one or more Asian languages. If you want a solid Chinese meal, you can't go wrong here. read more
