So mum wanted to show her appreciation for being her chauffeur taking her around to the doctors. She took me out for dimsum and with it being in Richmond there is a plethora of choices. She wanted to go to Kirin. Plenty of parking in the mall. Hostess greeted and seated us promptly. Restaurant was busy but not crazy. This was at 10am on a Thursday. Waiters were attentive. Usual table service was in place. Took our order and food came out at acceptable pace. When we were done, they politely boxed up the leftovers and we paid our bill. So service was on point. The food we ordered came out hot. The staples that I order to test was hargow, suimai and pai gwut(spareribs). All 3 dishes in general were good.....the hargow could have used an extra minute or 2 in the steamer. The suimai was very good. I tasted every ingredient in this dish. Usually it is just a complete mix and you can't discern the different flavors. They tried something different with the cheongfun by adding pieces of Chinese donut to the roll. I personally think it didn't add much to the dish, taste or texture wise. I did like the pea shoots with shrimp. I think it is a good combo. All in all a good dimsum. I also noticed they did not charge us a tea service. The cost of the food is comparable with other restaurants at this level. 5 stars for food and service, but it's seriously SO difficult to dine here unless 1) you stop by in person to make a reservation 3-4 days in advance (they don't pick up the phone) or 2) someone happens to cancel and you are waiting at the restaurant when the hostess receives the phone call ...we dined via the second way. The service here is seriously unparalleled for any Chinese restaurant I've been to. Our waiter, Kobun, was so courteous, polite, helpful, and funny. We love Kobun!! Saw other tables BYOB and they will uncork (unsure of corkage fee, but diners should double check). One party brought a bottle of bubbly, which was promptly put in an ice bucket. Attention to detail is amazing. This was a mini dinner before our real dinner, so we only ordered a couple things: 1) pea sprouts with crab - simple, but very tasty. Plenty of crab!! 2) crispy pan-fried lo mein with seafood (两面黄) - waiter suggested we have the lo-mein and sauce served separately so the noodles wouldn't get soggy (great decision). The seafood (shrimp, scallop, squid) in the sauce was oh so tender, scallops were seriously so good (super tender, and a little sweet). Complimentary dessert soups of red bean (warm) or coconut sago (cold). We got 2 of each, and thought mixing one spoon each per bite was the way to go :) We did like the red bean more though. We came on a Saturday and still was able to be seated without a reservation. Plenty of tables available. I have many Chinese friends in Vancouver, and my last visit to Kirin Richmond was in July 2024. This time, it was my birthday, and my friends insisted on treating me to Kirin Richmond once again. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality. read more

I can say without exaggeration that this was the best dim sum I've ever had. My only regret was that I didn't have the stomach capacity to eat more. It's always busy. If you're looking to eat here, make a res or come before opening. I came by 15 minutes before opening and was the first one in line and I still had to wait and was told to eat under an hour. I heard dim sum in Richmond is like the Hunger Games, but with the elderly. At the time of this review a res for one isn't possible on their website. I came back a second time the other day and got turned down at the door at opening. Could be the post-Mother's Day Weekend crowd, could be a regular day for them, I'll never know. Ambiance as noted above can be pushy and crowded, but what dim sum place isn't? If you can suck it up, it's well worth it. Quality dishes all around. I get my regular items and they're all fantastic: Shrimp & Eggplant, Shrimp Rice Rolls, Har Gow, Siu Mai. Couldn't think of a better way to end our trip than with awesome relatives in an upscale restaurant. Note: the dimsum menu here changes every month and the items are more elevated versions of your typical dimsum dishes. I particularly enjoyed the thousand tier cake, braised goose web in abalone sauce and braised beef tripe and tendon with radishes. Also really enjoyed their lobster with rice cakes as well as their Alaskan king crab cooked 2 ways (garlic steamed legs and salt and pepper stir fried body). Kirin Seafood Restaurant is a fine dining Chinese restaurant. It is a large spacious restaurant with plenty seating. I have been here a few times over the years for the occasional celebration & Chinese new year festivities. Needless to say, the 50-item-dim-sum menu is very popular here on those grand occasions. There are 3 locations in Metro Vancouver & KSR first opened up in downtown Vancouver in 1987. KSR has won several outstanding restaurant awards over the years. I was here at the Richmond (opened in 1989) location a few weeks ago just to try out their duck. First off I need to point out that you will be paying about 30% more for duck here than at other Chinese restaurants - FYI. Now the duck itself was excellent & well prepared - great presentation. Service was top notch. I will keep going back. I would recommend KSR to groups & large families. After checking to see if our whole party was here they said they can seat us but we need to leave in one hour because they have the table for some else. Ordering is done with the waiter. Hot and large chunks of ingredient- pork, shrimp and shortage mushroom Chicken paw- 7.7/10 not extra meaty. Flavor comes from a higher amount of oil vs thick sauce. Lotus leaf rice- 6/10. Didn't taste dried scallops. Sauce is thick and bit bland. Mai Lai Go- 6/10. Has hints of ginger and orange/mandarin peel. Not the classic version that has strong pandan and molasses. I drove up to Richmond from Seattle just to try this place, and I'm so glad I did! I'm not a dim sum expert, but there were so many little things that I found better at Kirin than at the dim sum restaurants back home. In the sticky rice, you can clearly taste the separate grains of rice instead of it being mushed together. The shrimp in the har gow, siu mai, and shrimp and eggplant was very light and sweet. The cha siu bao buns didn't make my mouth dry. I've also never seen beef chow fun with a bed of spinach under it that absorbs a lot of the oil. Thoroughly enjoyed this authentic Cantonese dimsum experience in Vancouver! We went for lunch and it was full of local Cantonese families which made it feel very authentic. We ordered the staple dimsum, however it was missing turnip cake which was really surprising! All the dimsum was well done and authentic, however they did forget a dish and took a while before they even discovered the order was never put in. Loved that they had mango pudding dessert too! The food was delicious and the table service was friendly and quick. The major disappointment was the wait. Granted we did not call ahead for a reservation but the wait was still over two hours. The hostess was not receptive to any our request to be seated early despite the fact the entire party being there more than half an hour before our 1:30 seating time. We previously ordered takeout from this restaurant 2 years ago when my wife & I went on a road trip up from California to Canada. It was so good back then, that I've been recommending and raving about to my family since that last visit. Fast forward to July 2024. My family travelled to the Vancouver, BC area for a vacation, and made it point of interest stop for our trip to try the dim sum in person on July 24th. For this 2nd visit, we sat down and dined in the restaurant because we made reservations a month in advance. The restaurant itself was quite large with traditional Chinese decor all over. The food itself was superb once again. My favorite items were the sticky/glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaves, BBQ pork buns, shrimp har gow, and freshly steamed rice noodle with shrimp. I can honestly state that the dim sum quality here rivals the SGV (San Gabriel Valley in California) and even Hong Kong. It's a must try if you're in the Richmond/Vancouver area! read more

From what I understand Richmond Canada has one of the best dim sum restaurants in the world and it really shows. What's crazy is that this wasn't even the best dim sum restaurant in Canada... it's more like top 10. Think lunasia dim sum in California or elite restaurant.. Kirin is a little better than Lunasia or elite restaurant in the SGV. That really speaks volume on how good the dim sum is in Richmond Canada.. on the flip side it is pricier than LA prices I tell you that. You also cannot order a small size as everything comes in big orders. The pork siu mai was one of the best I've ever had in any dim sum restaurant. I've been told to get the truffle siu mai but I just wanted to stick to the og siu mai to kinda gauge how good a dim sum restaurant. It's like judging a Korean restaurant based off their kimchi or a pizza restaurant based off their cheese/Margherita pizza. 5/5 would order the siu mai again and probably go for the truffle this time. There were big ass pieces of shrimp/pork and it was super juicy. The outside of wrapper was cooked perfectly, not soggy, not too dry but just right. -Wasn't really a fan of the chicken feet -The Hargow skin and jumbo shrimp is so much better than anything I've had in Sgv. -The shrimp rice roll noodles were so fresh and silky.. a lot of times when you try to pick up shrimp noodles drenched in soy sauce it would usually pull apart. This one kept its shape -The egg yolk bun is one of my all time favorite dim sum dishes and this did not disappoint at all. They have 3 seatings for lunch 1030, 12n & 145pm, they will not deviate & kindly remind you that your eating time was almost over. I'm Chinese, have access to excellent dimsum in Honolulu where I live. Kirin was recommended by a local Canadian originally from Hong Kong. Food was a bit disappointing compared to what we get in Honolulu. We couldn't order roast duck, they only had Peking duck. The chicken feet were tough, not cooked long enough. Beef chow fun lacked flavor. Beef & shrimp cheong fun, siu mai & har gau were good. I would not come back here or recommend. read more

When in Richmond BC, you need to hit up a dim sum spot at least once. During this visit, we visited Kirin. It's probably been a very long time since I've been here. The atmosphere is nice and packed with people. The quality of the dim sum here is great and there were unique items that I haven't seen before. The service is top notch and attentive. I liked that they offer two sets of chopsticks, one use for getting food from the center of the table and the other for personal use. They also order two tea pots (one with extra hot water). Restaurant is clean with modern Chinese feel and it's one staple restaurant for weddings and birthdays. Free parking for 2 hours for lunch, however it seems like there's no time restriction for dinner. Park and register vehicle info with the restaurant. One of the more high end Chinese restaurants in Richmond and so I have higher expectations. But I was quite disappointed. *Chef's Special Appetizer: Smoked Salmon / Seaweed / Pan Fried Minced Fish Patties in Spicy Thai Sauce - fish patties were shaped like SPAM slices but texture is mushy. The smoked salmon, fish patty and seaweed did not go together. There was no cohesive taste that binds this dish together. *Dried Scallop, Crab Meat and Fish Maw Soup: this soup is just ok, ingredients were sparse although taste is not bad. *Whole Abalone Braised with Goose Web, Fish Maw and Chinese Mushroom Served with Peatip in Oyster Sauce: quite bland and mushroom lacks aroma, goose web tasteless, abalone texture was good but lacks the marriage with the sauce. Pea-tip might be the only redeeming factor of this dish. *Live Chick Lobster Steamed with Chopped Garlic: only half a lobster per person. This dish is not bad. *Stewed E-Fu Noodle in Abalone Sauce: not bad as well In summary, dishes lacked the umami goodness. Went back for dim sum again during our recent trip to Vancouver. Had the opportunity to try several dim sum places, and Kirin was still the best. April was tax season and most of the other restaurants were not too crowded, except for Kirin. We arrived 5 minutes after they opened on a Wednesday, and were told they were full for the day and through the weekend! We had to make a reservation for the following week. We ordered shrimp dumplings, chive and shrimp dumplings, steamed rice rolls with beef and Chinese donut 鬼馬牛肉腸粉, pork liver Siu Mai 豬膶燒賣, supreme broth dumplings with abalone and fish maw 鮑魚花膠灌湯餃, baby bok choy with bean curd skin in fish broth, Kirin special chow mein, and egg tart. Everything was absolutely delicious! Their food was just a level better than the other places we tried, it's more refined. Some of the dishes, like the pork liver Siu Mai and soup dumpling with abalone and fish maw are not usually found in other restaurants. The Chinese donut added to the beef rice rolls made it a lot more interesting. The ambience was nice and spacious. Service was really attentive. Tea and XO sauce were provided with no extra charge. Very classy! Their staff was really well-trained. On our way out, everyone we came across said "thank you". Overall, a solid 5-star experience! read more

We ended up at this restaurant as another one nearby had a long wait. Here they told us it would be a 30 minute wait but it was more like 10 minutes for dim sum shortly after 11 am on a holiday. I'm glad we came here as we enjoyed our experience. The table was beautifully set with each person getting 2 sets of chopsticks wrapped in paper. We reviewed the menu and order 6 or 7 dishes to share amongst the 4 of us. We order staples such as sticky rice, rice roll, har gow, and shumai, but also a few items that we don't typically get at home. All the food was delicious. All of the food didn't arrive at the same time, and there were a few longer waits. The service was excellent. Our server took away dirty plates and steamers promptly and also came to replace our plates. They keep the tea topped up and checked up on us. I was impressed with how attentive they were. They offer up to 2 hours of free parking in the parking lot, and there's an elevator from the parkade. Otherwise, there are a few sets of stairs to get to the restaurant. read more

To be told to "be quick" and then glared at the entire time after being seated in a closet is insane. The food isn't anything special either. TLDR: A couple dishes not found in Bay Area. Overall good dim sum. MAKE A RESERVATION. We were about 15 minutes late to our reservation, which was for 1:15p. We still had to wait about 10-15 minutes. One unfortunate guy tried to walk-in, and was turned away. So make a reservation, but still expect to wait. Since this is dim sum, we ordered a wide variety of stuff. Naturally we only finished about half of it. Once again, I'm going to be comparing quite a bit with the Bay Area, seeing that's where I'm from. There's quite a bit to go through, so let's goooo! BBQ Pork Puff - Super Flaky, and super glazed. The glaze stuck to my teeth, so I tried eating them upside down. That worked well! Better than US. Peanut and Pork Porridge - Tastes good, but my wife still thinks HK is better. Doesn't even exist in US. Fried donut wrapped in Rice Crepe - Actually it was soggy. But the rice wrapper was thin, which is good. Worse than US. Chicken Feet - Good. Pretty flavorful. Same as US. Lotus wrapped sticky rice - One of my go-to dim sum. If you love mushrooms (which I don't), you'll love this. Filled with a lot of mushrooms. I had a devil of a time picking them all out. Parts of the rice still stuck on the wrap. My theory is, the better the rice, the less is stuck to the leaf. About same as US. Siu Mai - If you love shrimp, you'll love this. Not densely packed. Better than US. Sesame Pudding - Light and jiggly, while not being too sweet. Better than US. Deep Fried Egg Chip - Very light... texture kinda reminds me of those egg rolls you buy in a tin. The snack, not the deep-fried spring roll. You definitely need to use the coconut and syrup, otherwise not much flavor. Not in US. I would give this place 4 stars, because overall it's good, but the taste is pretty similar to Bay Area. Super elegant dimsum restaurant that we were initially unable to eat at on our first Sunday in Vancouver, as we hadn't realized that we needed to make a reservation and the place was understandably already booked out for the weekend. Luckily we inquired as to whether there was availability Tuesday morning and were told there was a table available right at open, so we were still able to slot Kirin into our schedule after all. We arrived right at open and there was already a large group of people waiting at the entrance ready to go in when 10AM hit. We were led to our table in the banquet hall shortly and began perusing the menus to figure out what we wanted to order. Everything is made to order and there are no carts, so you can trust that your food is super fresh and hasn't been sitting out for hours, which is nice. The one downside to having a more limited dimsum menu however is that there aren't as many accommodations that can be made for those with dietary restrictions; the one member of our party that is allergic to all seafood and shellfish consequently couldn't enjoy the siumai because the restaurant only has a pork and shrimp version of it, not one with just pork. Same with the pork and century egg congee, which comes with dried oyster in it - delicious, but an allergy flag for sure. I was also pretty sad that turnip cake wasn't on the menu, and others in our party were hoping for ham sui gok and only were able to find the fried taro version of that dish. But on to the things that we loved! The shrimp hargow was some of the best we've ever had, as was the aforementioned siumai and the spare ribs, which were succulent and flavorful and tender. Charsiu buns were soft and had a great ratio of bun to filling, and the eggplant shrimp was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Eggplant wasn't too mushy or too hard, and the shrimp was moist and flavorful. No one at our table really loved the standard chicken feet offering; maybe we should've ordered the chef's special version. I quite enjoyed the beef flat noodles because it was lighter and less oily than I normally expect, but others in our group didn't care for it for the exact same reason. I always love congee so I enjoyed Kirin's version but some thought it was pretty skimpy on the amount of century egg and didn't love the cut of pork used in the soup. Desserts were all hits; my husband and I love durian so the durian mochi was perfect for us, and the egg tarts were super flaky. Salted egg yolk buns were very visually cool as well as tasty. This is the first dim sum restaurant that I made reservation for ever in my life. In California, dim sum restaurants is first come first serve. Get there at opening to avoid the crowd. I love that in Vancouver you can make resy for any restaurants. But we are only allow 1.5 hours which is enough time to enjoy dim sum. You have to place the order with the server. There is no cart system. We ordered the following to share between 6 people: Eggplant stuffed with minced prawns in black bean sauce Deep fried chicken joint cartilage Golden Fried tofu Chicken feet Har Gow Siu Mai Braised beef tripe & tendon with Chinese radish Chinese donut wrapped in rice noodle Steam beef and Chinese donut rice roll Durian mochi Thousand tier cake Everything was delicious as expected of Chinese food in Vancouver. I loved the eggplant stuffed with minced shrimp. It was delicious. The best I have had thus far. The Steam beef and Chinese donut rice roll was something I haven't tried before. Normally the beef rice roll is just with beef and doesn't include crispy Chinese donut. It was quite yummy. The other dishes were comparable and similar to the ones in California. The durian mochi was decadent. Mochi was soft and chewy and filled with good amount of durian. The thousand tier cake was something I have not had before. Came here on a Monday afternoon. Overall, the place is okay. Con: the steamed beef rice roll, almost came with no meat. Very disappointed. Some classic dishes were not available (turnip cake, white tripe, and haam kok - deep fried minced pork dumpling). Pro: the food came extremely fast. The other dishes seem fine. Parking lot outside was free. Ordering by paper. They do not push the carts. read more

**Make sure to get a reservation before hand.** We made the mistake of trying to come here without one and we're turned away because they were fully booked for lunch. We also tried to make a reservation the day before and weren't able to get a table. Luckily we tried calling the next day and they had a cancelation and we were able to get a seat. The staff is super friendly and efficient. We were promptly seated and brought tea. We ordered the dim sum and it did not disappoint. A lot better than what we would get from California. The skins on the Har gow were thin but not mushy. The chicken feet were braised just right where it falls apart but sill gives a little resistance. The shu mai were seasoned perfectly without the need to dip in soy sauce. Everything we had was good, even the one we ordered by mistake (the unlabeled picture). Overall we left satisfied and with a full belly. Wish there was a spot in California that was this good. read more

This place is legit! One of the best dim sum meals I've had and, for reference, I'm Chinese and I've had dim sum in NYC, San Fran, Hong Kong, Guangdong, etc. Reservations are a must. And yes, they only give you 1.5 hours to eat, which wasn't a problem. We had pork cheong fun, shrimp cheong fun, pork ribs, chicken feet, ha gow, you tiu wrapped with cheong fun, siu mai, deep fried squid legs, salted duck yolk buns, eggplant stuff with shrimp, sticky rice stuffed with pork. Casual, no frill, great food Chinese restaurant in the heart of Waikiki! Highly recommend the Peking Duck, it was traditional style and fantastic. Generous portion as well. The dim sum sampler was also fantastic, especially the shrimp dumplings. Cucumber salad added some great freshness and crunch to our meal. Service was great. Prices were fair.
