We live a block from here and have been coming for years. Glad to see they recently freshened up the interior with new paint and furniture. It's brighter and more welcoming while still keeping its neighborhood charm. Solid, comforting Vietnamese food with generous portions and classic flavors done right. The beef pho hits the spot with a clear, aromatic broth that's not too sweet, and generous portions of tender beef. Exactly what you want when you're craving something warm and satisfying. The grilled pork chops had a nice depth of flavor from the fish sauce marinade, though they were a bit overcooked and slightly dry. The shrimp and pork plate, however, was spot on. The shrimp were juicy with a nice snap, and the pork was thinly sliced with good flavor. The beef spring rolls were hearty, with a good meat-to-vermicelli ratio. I can only rate their Banh Mi take-out. We've been spoiled living in cities that have places that only serve Banh Mi. It's a staple for us so we're always looking to find new places. In Waikiki, we were initially pointed to Rock and Rolls. The Banh Mi are okay there, but very overpriced. I'm not sure how it took years to find Pho Minh Thu. The Banh Mi are still not the $5 sandwiches you'll often find on the mainland, but the price seems completely reasonable, if not cheap, for the area. ($11 at the time of writing this). They were fresh made and great. It's kind of a hole in the wall place and doesnt feel like a location I'd like to sit and eat at, but some people there said the pho was fantastic as well. The lemonade was DELICIOUS and homemade and you could taste how potent it was. I got the bbq chicken rolls and they were so flavorful. Served with their own house made sauce which was the perfect blend of savoriness. The portions were huge and enough to share with one another. The shrimp was huge! And seasoned beautifully. They updated the menu, reupholstered the chairs, added more lighting, and the inside paintings look nice. The inside is also very clean! The owner was quiet, polite, and professional. Workers were efficient and food only took about 15 minutes to come out. Food: #31 Spring Rolls and Sirloin Pork Vermicelli 5/5 ($16.75) Authentic and tasty dish. The Spring rolls were made in house and crispy. All the veggies were fresh and delicious complementing the Vermicelli noodles. Dipping sauce (NƯỚC CHẤM) was good. Pork Banh Mi 4/5 ($10) This was good. Ingredients inside were fresh and pork was flavorful. Bread could be warmer and less chewy. Not many options near the Waikiki area. It does fill that itch but a bit pricey as is most things in Hawaii. Fairly slow service. They did have lots of people but only one person working the front. Had to go orders as well. Ambiance is not romantic. There is parking out front. Food nothing crazy to rave about but again because not much viet food in the area. It does okay. 3.5 Stars if I could but I like yo round up. A bit of a hidden location the fact that they are on the street I live makes them a viable option. The restaurant is clean and bright, well-maintained in contrast to what you may think from the outside. The food is fresh and wholesome. We started with Summer Rolls,which are huge. Too much vermicelli noodles for my taste, but pairs nicely with their peanut sauce. We shared a Papaya Salad which was good but a little bland. Chicken bahn mit's are equally good but alsosomewhat bland. I've never seen tomatoes on a bahn mit before so I was surprised to find them on mine. Not terrible...just unexpected. My overall impression of the food is that the flavor level should be turned up a notch. To be fair, though, you can add your own condiments and get the food where you want it. Table service is efficient and courteous. I don't know that I would drive out of my way for this restaurant...as there are many great Vietnamese places in Honolulu...but having them so close to home means we will definitely be back. read more

This was our first visit to an Asian restaurant in Honolulu. The building outside isn't the greatest, it's your typical Asian restaurant. It looked clean enough. I had pho da biet, summer rolls, and a bahn mi to go. The food came out fast even though it looks like it's just the owners working here. The pho broth was full of flavor. I finished the whole bowl by myself. They didn't bring out any extra condiments like pepper and sugar, I didn't ask for it either. They did have the basil and bean sprouts. The bowl was smaller than you would typically get on the mainland, understandable because everything is expensive here. The summer rolls were fresh and just enough to satisfy your craving. I really wanted to like this place, given that it was well-located, super clean, and was family operated. However, it fell flat for me. My party of 2 stopped by after a long day at the beach, and we were immediately greeted and seated. When we arrived, there was only one other party, and they were on their way out. We had ample time to review the menu and place our order. It took a while for our food to be prepared (but that was okay since there were only about 3-4 workers!) I opted for a medium bowl of beef pho, and was disappointed with the taste. While the meat was nice and tender, the taste of the broth wasn't right. It didn't taste authentic, and felt watered down. I was also shocked they didn't offer onions on the side (just basil, bean sprouts, and the smallest sliver of lemon -- no jalepenos). The medium sized bowl was enough to fill someone who doesn't have much of an appetite or is looking for a lighter meal. For the pho and a can of coconut water, I paid $23 (with tax+tip) which is definitely overpriced (even by Hawaii standards). Based on taste and price point alone, I wouldn't come back here. read more

On our first night in Honolulu, we were all collectively tired from a long flight, as well as quite famished from the lack of food. We had originally intended to try the sushi joint nearby, but the place was packed at 7pm when we arrived, and had a long wait time. We noticed Pho Minh Thu just around the corner on our walk down, so we decided to stop in despite the dark exterior, and total hole-in-the-wall vibe. The place only had a few patrons dining inside, so we were basically able to get our choice of seating. Prices are definitely on the higher end here, at $15 for a large pho, and $14 for a medium bowl. We wound up ordering several bowls of pho, as well as a chicken lemon glass vermicelli. Despite the low level of patrons dining at the time, this place is definitely slow on the service. And it actually took quite a bit for our orders to come out, as well as trying to flag down the server/owner to get the check at the end so we could pay. While the prices here are on the higher end, and service is definitely on the slower/less attentive end, the food here thankfully came through, and the portion sizes were pretty generous. Coming from southern California where there are tons of Vietnamese restaurants, my wife and I have eaten our fair share of pho. This small eatery is situated in Waikiki and I can tell the locals in the neighborhood frequent for take out. Quite a few came in while we sat and ate. They were sadly all out of the spring rolls. But my wife and I got our other usual, the rare steak (eye of round--in this case). The broth was absolutely on point. The beef flavor was unmistakable and I could taste all of the steeped herb flavors. Someone put some love into that broth. The staff was very warm and welcoming. The food and the staff make up for the interior of the restaurant. This is the only reason they got a 4 instead of a 5 from me. The interior is quite run down and hasn't had any maintenance or renovations probably since the 80's, if not even further back. It could definitely use a good scrub and purging of stuff built up behind the register and in the kitchen over the years. They have obviously weathered the "pandemic " storm and have been there for years. Hopefully they get around to it. In the mean time, know they are great at serving up wonderful, filling food. If you are looking for fancy or nice interiors (or ambiance) this is not the place. But if you are in Waikiki and you're searching for a nice bowl of pho, they've got that. read more
