But with a name like HK dim sum, you've got a lot to live up to. Ha Gaos are good and meaty, but wrapping always falls apart before it hits your mouth. Siu Mai is decent. I usually also order: curry squid, pan-fried turnip cake (don't get the steamed one), and "cheung fun". Good place to come though if you're craving dim sum at non-dim-sum hours of the day. read more

Oh how the mighty have fallen. I have been coming here ever since they have opened and have long considered this place as one of the best dim sum places in Houston. Lately (past 2-3 visits), I've noticed the quality of the food has dropped dramatically. From rotted bread (green colored) on my bbq bun To almost everything being uncooked or undercooked. I believe they served us almost raw chicken. This is unacceptable for ANY restaurant but the restaurant wasn't even busy. There was NO excuse for what was served. I went here on a Saturday around 10AM for the first time. LIke previous reviewers have mentioned, there are no cart systems here due to small space, but you get a paper checklist menu that you can select your dim sum from. And it is translated in English, Chinese, and Vietnamese! The checklist is divided into categories such as desserts, rice rolls, etc, so that you know if it is sweet or savory. I like not having to chase the carts down or waiting for a cart to come by. I want my food to come out fresh and at once! :) Went with my husband and baby. The waitresses were so nice. They even played and held him so we can eat! THey also brought us a hot water cup to warm up his bottle. And when we were leaving, they offered to put our leftover hot tea in a to go cup and even filled it up extra. Went above and beyond. My faves were the lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice with meat, anything that was tofu skin and stuffed, and the Shanghai dumplings. All were excellent as well as the usual suspects of har gow and rice rolls. :) This place is located next to Juice Box and Star Snow Ice. Stopped by here to try out my first Dim Sum on a random afternoon while we were in the area. No carts here, though, but it's still pretty good. It's a nice casual spot, but kind of crowded and the wait-staff wasn't too friendly. All of the dishes we tried were great, and I think I want to come back to try it again, but I felt it was just a little pricy for what you get. Overall, a very solid pick to temper dim sum cravings. Hell, I trust Chris Shepard's palate and HK Dim Sum is one of his favorites. There's a wait, but that's usually indicative of a quality restaurant. While it's definitely organized chaos when it comes to the list, it seems to work for them. After all, the restaurant is tiny and packed. Since it's dim sum, we sampled a wide variety of dishes to keep it interesting. The pork spare ribs were cooked without degrading into gummy territory, but were lacking a punch of flavor. Sticky Rice wrapped in Lotus was one of my husband's favorites, as usual. While the BBQ Pork Bun was soft and fluffy, the filling was a bit too sweet for my taste and a bit too lacking in filling-to-bun-ratio for my husband. Although I enjoyed the sauce of sweet curry, the Curry Cuttlefish had been cooked into complete rubber. Dumplings is where HK Dim Sum succeeds consistently. The Fried Shrimp Dumpling was piping hot with a crunchy outside and tender whole shrimp center. The servers talk to you when they're not busy and the tables are CLEAN when they're not running around during lunch.... If you're craving Dim Sum, I'd rate this place a 4/5 overall. This is one of the few places that will serve dim sum out of the normal hours. (After 1:00pm) It's small, but has enough room to suit a small crowd. Be early if you want to grab a table. It does get crowded during lunch and especially the weekends. Pictures of the food are provided and instead of the traditional push carts that roll around and point at dishes you want, you will have to order on paper. It doesn't bother me, but it can for others. At least you won't have to wait for a cart to come around. Some of those traditional carts don't even go to your table. Like I said, it's a small restaurant so a few dishes may come after another instead of all at once. I usually order the xiu-mai (pork and shrimp dumplings), ha-cao (shrimp dumplings), shrimp noodle looking things with sweet soy sauce, fried taro, fried crab balls, and broccoli. This place is a great alternative to Fungs. It can get very crowded mainly because they are in a very small space in the Dun Huang complex. However, the dimsum is great and the service acceptable. Because its so crowded, there arent any rolling carts in this place, which isnt a problem with me. Ive done the rolling cart thing in so many places. Now I just want to eat. They have really good dumplings and the chicken feet. I also like the Kangkong Belacan (from the main menu). Their steamed rice in lotus leaf is great as well. I'm from Seattle, came down to town to visit my parents and my husband and I wanted to find a dim sum place here. We could've went to the bigger restaurants that i had gone to when i used to live in houston, but with all the new restaurants popping up on bellaire, i figured we should try something new and with all the "good reviews" that I read on yelp, we decided to try it out.... We were disappointed. Even though when you order, and they serve it to you fresh and hot, it wasn't exactly true since a couple of items seemed a bit as if it was just sitting out for a while and it wasn't like it was busy during the time we went. Aside from that, I thought this place was expensive when we got our bill. The amount we ordered for 2 here that we normally order from Seattle at an actual pushing the cart around dim sum restaurant is so much more! Normally we pay between $28-35, which includes tip, but this place was like $50 not including tip. That's ridiculous!! The dim sum here is ok, but I wouldn't rave like crazy over it. Not to mention that while I had gone to wash my hands in the bathroom and taking my 2 toddlers to the potty, my husband was waiting for me and boxing the leftovers, the employees would keep coming up to him asking if he was ready to pay. The first couple of times they asked within minutes of each other, my husband told them in a minute since he was waiting for me to pay since I'm the one who normally takes care of the bill. By the 3rd time they came up to him, my husband just gave up and paid just as I got out my wallet to head to the counter from the restroom. this is my total pet peeve about Asian restaurants who feel the need to "harass" you about paying up, and even some Asian restaurants that i had been to, they even remind you to leave a tip just as they are about to hand me my bill... Last time I came here was 3 months ago the staff still remembers me. I just feel HK dim Sum are the best as in taste and flavoring tastes. The foods were ok,but terrible service. Rude staff. We were treated like" here your foods , hurry up eat and leave" . My bill was about $73.00 and I already put on the table $17 in cash for tips. As soon as the waiter bought the bill seeing on the table bill of one dollars, he reached for the receipt on the tray and told me that tips are 15%,. he probably thought that tip on the table was only a couple dollars. Tiny little shop that serves the best damn dim sum I've ever consumed ! Everything just tastes so freakin fresh! I love the fried shrimp puffs with the sweet mayo! If you're down for whatever, the chicken feet is bomb as well. Don't get me started on the BBQ pork buns... Moist and fluffy! The shrimp dumplings... Yum! They're not the typical push cart dim sum. That's probably why the food is fresh. You're getting it straight out the kitchen and serving time is pretty quick also. Dim Sum. Fun to say, fun to eat. The same can be said about HK Dim Sum in Chinatown. Now if your're okay with waiting on the weekends, this is a great place for you to get your "dim sum" fix. It's basically restaurant style in which you sit at a table and order what you want. The food comes out pretty quickly and will make your tummy growl for more (not because there's small portions... because it's so good!). There are some cons to this type of business though... not everyone can see the dim sum carts strolling around to see all types of food, which in my opinion can take away from the dim sum experience you go through at other places like Kim Son, Ocean Palace, and Lucky Dragon. BUT, if you know what you like and what you want, this is the place for you. I've been there in the afternoon one time when it was slow and just ordered all my favorite dim sum bites without any wait. It was awesome. I really like this place. I let my Malay co-worker just go crazy with the ordering - just easier for me to eat what comes and more of an adventure. Portion sizes are larger than most places I have been locally, and prices lower as well. 5 of us stuffed ourselves silly for $76 (before tip). BYOB. All food made to order and well prepared. It's not a bad place for dim-sum. I think they serve it throughout the day, so you could come here for dinner as well. It's very tiny, but I've never had any issues with getting a seat. Once you sit down, they give you a tiny piece of paper in which you write down what you want to order. For dim-sum, the taste and price is very average. The servings do run a bit on the smaller side though. I love their Lai Wong Bao though...and I'll usually order a few more to bring home. read more

I have only been here once, and with what I've experienced, I won't be coming back. When we came in, there were probably about 4 tables that were occupied. It wasn't too busy since it was a little after lunch on a Friday so we were seated fairly quickly. We were given a slip of paper to mark what we wanted to order. We ordered some ha cao, xiu mai, fried taro puff, fried pork dumplings, turnip cakes, curry squid, beef meatballs, shrimp rice rolls. and two bowls of congee. First off, the food took forever to come out, The xiu mai was pretty good. Probably the best out of what we ordered. The fried taro puff and fried pork dumplings were also pretty good, although a little more flavor would be preferred. The turnip cakes lacked a lot of flavor as well as the curry squid, so it wasn't the best in my opinion. The shrimp rice rolls weren't terrible, they just weren't the best I've ever had. As for the beef meat balls, we barely touched that since the color was off as well as the smell. So overall, the food wasn't completely terrible, but I gave this place two stars due to the following: First off, the two bowls of congee and the ha cao did not come out at all. We waited and waited. When we saw that some other tables who ordered ha cao and congee after us, got their food, we decided to ask about the whereabouts of ours. The waiter responded extremely rudely and told us that we did not order any of that. By now, I was pretty upset and asked to see the slip of paper I filled out which definitely showed that I did, indeed, order those items. A woman working in the back, quickly came out and apologized for the mistake and told us that the food would come out asap. Nope. 10 minutes later one bowl of congee came out. We then asked where the rest of our food was. At this point, the waiter had totally ignored us, so the old lady asked us what we ordered. We told her we still had two items left, another bowl of congee and ha cao. She said it will come right out. Again, 10 minutes later, another bowl of congee came out. Still, no ha cao. We asked her once again, where our ha cao was. She said she forgot and it will come out in 15 minutes. At this point, we were fed up with all of this. We cancelled our last order and asked for our check. What was worse was when the check came, low and behold, everything we ordered and cancelled were on the tab. So they could remember to charge us for everything, yet couldn't remember to bring the food items out. From what I saw, they also messed up the orders for the table next to us as well. Get it together people. It's okay if minor mistakes were made; I wouldn't be upset, but if you repeatedly make mistake after mistake, that's not okay in my book. I couldn't understand how they could mess up our order that much, a guy with us spoke to her in Cantonese after our orders kept failing thinking that it would help, obviously the problem wasn't a language barrier. With everything being said, I gave this place two stars instead of one, because the women did actually try. She didn't have our ordered and was flustered by the mistakes of the waiter. We were in China Town and stumbled upon this Dim Sum Place. Their food was fresh and piping hot when it came out. We got the food fairly fast and they have your typical dim sum fare. Try the crispy shrimp balls and the sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves. Our bill for 6 dishes came out about $26 with tip so it was fairly cheap. I would go back here again since the food was pretty decent and fast & efficient service. read more

The quality of the dim sum is clearly superior to that of Fung's and everything tastes fresh and flavorful. My husband and I had 7 items and the check came to be $35 plus tips so it's not cheap for dim sum but the portion is good. The curry octopus was very tender, and the steamed rice wrapper with BBQ pork melted in the mouth! We also liked the pan fried turnip cake very much. On top of that, the wait staff is pleasant and efficient despite how busy they are. read more
