Today I had a very frustrating experience at Hao Binh Supermarket. While waiting in line at the seafood section, there were only two employees working--one assisting a customer and the other cleaning fish. I approached the employee cleaning fish and let him know there were several people waiting to be helped so we could continue with our shopping. However, he repeatedly told me to "just stand there and wait" without giving any indication of how long it would take. When I asked for an estimated wait time, he continued repeating himself the same thing, telling me to wait, which made the situation even more frustrating. More customers kept coming to buy fish, but he showed no urgency or concern. The customer service was so poor that I felt compelled to report the issue to management. After this experience, I don't plan on supporting their business again. I also wasn't the only one upset--several other customers were frustrated with the same issue. Some people only needed their fish weighed, which is a simple service, yet it was handled very poorly. If they don't consider selling their fish to be important, then I'll be the first pto stop supporting their business. I went to the front desk to report the issue, and the employee--Linh, I believe, though I may be mistaken--didn't seem to see anything wrong. She insisted that he was working, even though that wasn't the issue. It felt like she was siding with him rather than addressing the concern. I'm not trying to make things difficult for anyone, but when I go grocery shopping, I expect the process to be convenient, quick, and straightforward. Younger supervisor lady that guards the front convenience counter gave my dad, a stroke patient with expressive aphasia, the hardest time when he was trying to buy ground coffee. For some reason they gatekeep it behind that counter and I guess you're supposed to ask the cashier to shout across to the supervisor if you want a bag of coffee, then they take it out of the vault. My dad was already in line at the register and, being that he has only a few vocabulary words, thought it would be easier if he just went to the counter himself. He managed to communicate to her that he would like a bag of coffee, but after handing it to him she started freaking tf out as if he was going to steal it. Remember, she handed it to him herself, he DID NOT reach in or go behind the counter. He couldn't verbally defend himself and it became a huge scene. I was actually coming out from the bathroom so I witnessed most of it from afar as I was walking to the front. I'm not sure if they're selling coffee with gold flakes or what, but it was obvious he was going to take it right back to the checkout line - not out the door. A cashier was literally ringing up his other items when this happened, I even heard the cashier say "He's from my register it's going to be for here". After one of the bagger uncles recognized that my dad was a regular, it was resolved, but damn was it embarrassing and unnecessary. The entire store stopped to watch all of it go down. Completely unapologetic, she just went back to her counter all stank face mocking my dad's disability. Mocking a disabled person is wicked and it confirms this was beyond a simple misunderstanding on her part. Makes this market's name super ironic. I amazon'd him a burr grinder that night. Came at this location for the first time and found out very few selection of items. Pomona location is better choice.

Saw one of the workers handling the raw fish and a fish dropped onto the floor. I watched him as he picked the fish off of the floor and threw it in with the other fish that were on the ice being someone that cares about food and quality control having worked in the food industry. I confronted him and told him that that was not right and he shouldn't have done that you started laughing and saying it was OK and I told him he should've thrown it in the trash and I spoke to a cashier the cashier started to laugh. The younger Vietnamese guy in the fish department ( there are two Vietnamese people) is extremely rude. His customer service is 0. He never smiles and when asked a question he does not answer. sometimes he makes you wait a longer time, then when it is your turn he just walks away. Today i had a very bad experience with him. I asked him to clean the fish and cut the head and tail. he did not scale the fish, when i asked him, he said i told him to cut the head and tail not scaling. But i assumed cleaning mean scaling also. and he yelled at me. Shopped there this weekend and Service was extremely horrible. The butchers were grumpy and rude. They didn't want to help and cranky. I went to purchase Tilapia and I was asked if I wanted mine fried. I Said yes "well fried". When I got home and start to eat my Tilapia, it was raw and there still had blood. I called to let the supervisor know how I had received my Tilapia and her respones was "if it was still raw and had blood just refry it and at home, we had alot of people today." I love coming to Hoa Binh Supermarket for all of my Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese cooking! They really have everything I've ever needed to look for (ingredients and tools) and even the more elusive sauces that even 99 Ranch market doesn't have. In general, the fruits and veggies here are priced well especially when they have sales going on and I feel that they have more variety compared to the more known 99 Ranch Market. This is a Vietnamese-based supermarket so if you're looking for Vietnamese ingredients/kitchen tools, this is the place to go. Compared to the other surrounding Vietnamese supermarkets here in Garden Grove, I think that Hoa Binh is a good balance between cheaper prices and having almost all goods that you may be looking for. This would be a great one-stop shop if you just want to get it all in one place and don't want to shop around for the best price/missing something that another smaller Vietnamese markets don't have. Produce and meats are fresh here for the most part - fresher than 99 Ranch market in my opinion and usually better than the other Vietnamese markets around here. I would definitely give this place a try, but keep in mind that it IS an asian supermarket so it does have an off-putting smell from a combination of sewage water, seafood, and pickled veggies all mixed in. And yes, this is not a clean-looking asian market like H-MART or some of the nicer 99 Ranch Markets, but they offer so many ingredients that I really don't mind... but if you're used to the clean markets, this place is not for you. read more

The parking lot of this supermarket is tiny and completely jammed pack. Don't try to come here on the weekends as you will fight many people trying to back out of your parking space and shopping carts everywhere in the parking lot. Beyond the parking lot, the store currently offers lots of fresh fruits that are hard to find at your normal grocery store as rambuton, lychee, logan, jackfruit, mangosteen, cherimoya, and the list goes on. The seafood department also offers live and fresh assortment of clams, snails, fish, oysters, and more. This area is very smelly and I've been to many other Asian supermarkets. I was searching for hard liquor and found that they didn't offer any. I noticed that the food pricing was decent and comparable to other markets in the area. While in the store, I got shoved and pushed by two different employees who were trying to squeeze by in their rush to wherever. At that time, I decided to leave. I totally agree with the last review about the fish department at this place. Went to this place the other day for the first time & when I passed by the fish department, I heard these 2 dudes talking in Spanish loudly. I later saw these loudmouths help some of the ladies & overheard them talk crap about the ladies they just helped in Spanish (don't want to mention it here) after she thanked them & walked away. I thought they were rude, obnoxious morons that lacked manners & professionalism, and I wondered why a place as nice as that would hire these 2 assholes that had no manners & no customer service skills. The Asian guys there were a lot more well-mannered, professional, & customer-oriented - they didn't let those 2 live speakerphones distract them & were focusing on helping me and others. Looks like HR didn't do a good job in hiring people with customer service skills. This is a nice place to shop at but the next time I stop by, I do not want these racists to help me with my fish purchases. I hope management reads these bad reviews b/c it would be unwise to lose customers to these morons, especially more and more people nowadays would prefer to come back to a place with good customer service than one with poor customer service. ***Everyone PLEASE BE AWARE and WATCH YOUR FOOD BEING MADE*** What a major scam meat butchering is here. My family and I were in the butcher area and wanted a specific meat we chose from the window to be cut. And while they were cutting the meat we saw there was still extra meat that we specifically chose still leftover next to the cutter. Why you ask did they not cut our meat? Oh I'll tell you why: It's because they were cutting some other meat scraps first before cutting our own meat we wanted cut. Unbelievable. We thought it was even more strange that another worker came in while he was cutting and was positioned in front of the cutter, conveniently trying to block our view. We called them out on it. The butcher manager and worker quickly redid the meat. They could not hide their guilt at all. I definite don't want these guys cooking my meat ever again, but I'd sure like to play poker with them. The guilt on their faces was easier to read than The Three Little Pigs. Who knows what kind of meat they were cutting up before ours. It could have been old meat scraps sitting there for God knows how long. Watch your meat being cut like a hawk. For all you know you could be eating liver and organs. read more

This review is about the seafood counter employee, especially this guy who talked a lot and loud. I asked for a live Dungeness crab. He grabbed me one, but given the opaque glasses, I could not see well whether or not he grabbed one from the water tank. I noticed the crab was not "fighting" for release, or not so "live". I asked whether or not it is still alive. He touched the legs and they moved a little, and shouted at me saying that they are all alive. Okay! $24 dollars and one hour later, I put the crab in my kitchen sink, filled with water. Immediately some yellow pus came out from the crab belly. And it is not moving. I knew immediately he gave me a crab that almost died and is probably infected with germs since the yellow pus is the decomposing organs. Thanks, Hoa Binh! Well, it's the holiday season, and if you have never had roasted chestnuts--although these won't be "roasting on an open fire"--here's a simple way to do so: 1. Prepare the chestnuts by carefully slicing the top rounded part of each nut. Use a sharp bread knife. You want the side-to-side cut to slice through the shell, but not through the nut. The cut should run the length of the top of the nut. 2. Once they are all prepped, place them in a pot of cold water. Add salt. Heat them to a simmer, and then drain. 3. Place the nuts in a roasting pan, and roast at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. 4. Place into a bowl and cover with a towel; let them steam for a bit.
