Unfortunately, the quality seems to have declined significantly compared to earlier this year. The chicken curry was especially disappointing. The broth tasted more like chicken soup with a light hint of curry powder rather than a flavorful curry. The chicken and carrots tasted as though they had been cooked separately and combined afterward, resulting in a dish that lacked depth and seasoning. The Vietnamese coffee was another letdown. It used to have the rich, bold, sweet flavor you'd expect, but this time it tasted overly harsh and bitter, as if it was made primarily with dark roast coffee and evaporated milk, with little to no condensed milk. Based on these two items, it feels like corners may be getting cut, whether in ingredients or preparation. I also purchased the braised catfish, sweet and sour soup, bitter melon soup, and braised ribs, but after this experience, I'm hesitant about what to expect. It's disappointing because this business showed a lot of promise and delivered much better quality in the past. For six dollars you can't ask for more heck you can't even get a burger for less than that nowadays and this meal is much healthier than anything I can think about for $6. They had a bunch of hot foods to go packaged up for about five dollars to seven dollars each depending on what you get. If you're eating here expect the full experience, there will be a lot of loud talking, cigarette smoke, and the occasional Viet homeless guy, but to me is this part of the charm. Errrrr. I would give this place a 1.5. It was bad but I appreciated the refund. I was in the area around 1pm on a Sunday and all nearby food shops seemed to be so busy. I really was just looking for a place to work from the laptop for a few hours and get a drink and a snack. Ended up at lac viet as the last choice. The line was out the door and it was going very slow. After 5 minutes of waiting I decided to just go over to the kiosk. I noticed they didn't have certain items on the kiosk and they charge for using a card. Thats not great. After ordering i sat down to wait and watched all the commotion at this store. It was busy and I wondered if it recently opened so they didn't have their systems down. I also watched them make my ube coffee and was disappointed that the coffee wasnt store made and came from a jug and only their cream seemed to be made in-store. This is why their coffee and food items are so low-priced because you're not paying for quality here. My order came out in about 10 minutes and I went outside to one of the tables to set up. I was disappointed again when I saw that my crab soup not only had chicken meat in it (which was not advertised anywhere on the menu) and it was cold as hell. They didn't even bother heating it up. Since I only eat seafood and not meat, I wrapped everything up and went back inside to get a refund. I explained the situation and although I was offered something else, I decided to go with the refund because they don't even heat up their soups! I appreciate the quick refund but I literally ended up driving down the street to freaking McDonald's to grab a drink and some fries instead. That's just sad. I understand that it's very busy (lines and customers coming in and out) and that they also sell food, but: 1) There were more than 6 workers and sometimes the workers either seem lost or wander aimlessly. 2) Their work efficiency seemed lacking and they seemed disorganized; I would recommend having at least one person at a designated station at all times. 3) Drinks are already pre-made, so it should not take more than 10 minutes for orders where one just pours or adds ice. I must say, I do enjoy their coffee and the price for it, but this experience makes me a bit hesitant to order here again. The prices are pretty competitive, but the food quality is in par with what you pay. I was excited to get a $5-6 banh mi heo quay sandwich, but it literally was ALL FAT. The pork belly was really just belly sadly. I'd avoid the sandwiches. They also are pre-made or batch made, the plus of that is you get your sandwich right away. I've been searching for places to get Vietnamese food to go since my normal take out spot - Kim Huong - is closed for a month (vacation). Lac Viet popped up on Yelp, so I decided to check them out early Sunday morning. Parking lot was half full - so I imagine it only gets worse later in the day, especially on the weekend. Only half of their prepared food dishes were available - when I asked about personal favorites like Thit Trung Kho, or Xoi Man - I was told that those dishes aren't ready until closer to Noon. Yea - not planning to come back here during that time to deal with the crowds. There's a kiosk that takes card (with a 3% fee if total is under $15) - but if you notice on the photo I took, half the items were grayed out (unavailable) - such as the spring rolls. In another photo I shared, you can see a full display of several types of spring rolls ready to order - so not sure how accurate the kiosk is. I waited in the relatively short line to order with a clerk. The space is clean, bright, and has shelves of fresh, prepared food. There is even a microwave for customers to reheat their food. Since my two favorites weren't available yet, I picked up a bowl of Mi Tron Heo Quay (Egg Noodles with Crisp Pork Belly - $8.45) - which comes with a separate container of soup. This was a good dish that I enjoyed later in the day - there is a good proportion of pork belly, two shrimps, half of an egg, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. I also picked up a bowl of Lagu Bo (Beef Stew with Veggies - $6.95). This dish comes with a side of french bread - perfect to dip in the thick red broth. There are three generous cuts of beef shank, perfectly soft carrots and potatoes. I liked this dish. It's a good ratio of protein to veggies to broth for the price. For breakfast, I ordered three spring rolls ($8.75) and a Cafe Sua Da ($3.50). The spring rolls were great - although much more pricier than the displayed price of $5.50. The clerk told me the lower price was for the Bi Cuon only. Since my order was over $30, the clerk said I also get two free cups of Nuoc Mia (Sugar Cane drink) - but after a few sips when I got home, I dumped both cups after my housemates didn't want either of them. I'll have to ask if I can sub those drinks for something else next time. While the prices are fair - some are a great value for some items, other items are more pricier (like the spring rolls) - what Lac Viet really gets right is the presentation. Everything is in very nice packaging (for Vietnamese takeout food) - the bowls are solid, with lids that actually prevent spillage on the drive home. Their bags remind me of the fancy totes that Vietnamese bakeries give out when you buy mooncakes. Their cups (at least for the nuoc mia) is well designed and also has a secure lid. I know they also have a spot over on Bolsa right next to Kang Lac bakery - but everyone knows that parking lot sucks over there - so I'm happy there is this spot here. My mom was telling me about Lac Viet Concepts on Bolsa near the Asian Garden Mall. I popped Lac Viet into my navigation and two different addresses appeared. I picked the one on Brookhurst since I knew the parking on Bolsa was probably crap. I guess this is their second location since my mom didn't even know about it. She had visited the other one due to a recommendation from my dad's friend. My husband and I stopped in during the lunch hours and ordered the banh mi. Apparently, they have a display with the food available that day. The sandwiches aren't in the display case but I asked if they had them and they did. I ordered two banh mi thit nuong to go with the pickled vegetables on the side and was handed two elegantly wrapped sandwiches. The vegetables were indeed separate as instructed. The two sandwiches were $10 plus tax. It was a decent deal and a good sandwich. The bread was nice and crispy on the outside while being chewy on the inside. The grilled pork was okay and my husband really enjoyed it. I think I would have gone with a different protein myself. Check them out before the food runs out. Came here on Friday afternoon to find out that the place was closed at 3:00 pm. So I tried again today, Saturday, and got there earlier. Fortunately, there was no one in line when I got there. Sticky rice with braised fish was good. I was afraid it would be fishy but it was not. I also had a few bites of sweet sticky rice and it was okay since it was cold and not chewy as I was hoping. I took it home and heated it up in the microwave later and it was so much better. Also shared the spring rolls with my sister and we thought they were good. The grilled pork one was full of chargrilled flavor but a bit fatty for me. I pulled all the fat out. The dipping sauce was excellent. I believe it was shrimp sauce. They mixed it well so it had a perfect taste. The soup, we took them home and heated it up, added some asparagus spears and that was very delicious. My sisters ordered the beef stew and curry chicken and have not eaten them yet so I'm not sure what they taste like. I did open the container for the beef stew to look and noticed it has mostly shank & fat and little lean meat. Definitely a return visit soon.
