I can understand why this place has such high ratings. The customer service is incredibly helpful and pleasant. The main and pretty much only server is very friendly and it's evident that he genuinely cares about the business and its customers. This made me think he might be the owner but when I asked, he clarified that he's not and that the owner is a woman. He said he simply loves his job. The restaurant is a bit outdated but has a cozy, family-owned charm to it. The menu is extensive but unfortunately, it lacks vegetarian and pescatarian-friendly options. I appreciate the staff's transparency, as I was informed that the shrimp sticks in the Chao Tom dish contain pork fat and all the soup broths are made with meat despite having tofu options as protein topping. Despite the lack of vegetarian options, I enjoyed my visit to this lovely family-owned restaurant. I like that as soon as you sit down, they give you complimentary shrimp chips and after your meal, they offer a delightful complimentary creamy tapioca dessert. It was delicious and not overly sweet. I could easily have finished two bowls. Overall, if you're a carnivore, I highly recommend making a visit and experiencing their great food and exceptional service. Great reviews and curiosity led me to try this place for lunch meeting. The place is very clean and feels new on the inside despite a little bit of a rough exterior. The service was quick and friendly, offering to move the table or booth if we needed more space. Right after ordering, some sort of shrimp chips hit the table so we had something to munch on as we waited for our food. This huge delicious bowl of seafood noodle soup for less than $15 was a winner. They checked on us to see if everything was good, refilled the drinks, and then surprise dessert at the end. The person I was meeting for lunch said that it was one of the best Vietnamese places he's tried in the area. read more

Food was delicious, hot, and fresh. I ordered the grilled beef wrapped in betel leaf and bánh xèo, along with sugar cane with kumquat drink. The bánh xèo was especially crispy, which is the best kind. Both dishes came with plenty of herbs and lettuce to make your own lettuce wrap. The sugar cane drink was not too sweet. The staff were friendly and fast with service. I visited this restaurant while traveling after researching Viet food in Houston and I'm very glad I stopped in. I highly recommend! read more

My pregnant cousin and I came in for breakfast this morning, and we were honestly impressed. Right off the bat, they gave us complimentary shrimp chips to snack on while we waited for our food, which was such a nice little touch and got us excited for the rest of the meal. First thing that came out was the Hu Tieu Ap Chao, and wow--it was cooked to crispy perfection. The sauce had a nice thickness to it, and it came with a solid mix of protein and veggies. Everything was well balanced, not too oily or heavy. Then we got the tasty Pha Lau, which we let cool off while we started on the Bun Dau Mam Tom that came out at the same time. The proteins and greens on that plate were super fresh, and the blood sausage and cha were extra crispy--exactly how I like them. After all that, they even gave us some complimentary Che, which was such a nice surprise to end on a sweet note. The owner and chef checked on us more than once throughout our visit, and you can tell they really care about the experience. Yeah, the restaurant itself is small and looks a little run-down--but honestly, those are usually the best spots. You can tell the focus here is all about the food. This mom & pop restaurant is on our list for one of the best Bun Rieu & Mì Bò Kho we've had in Houston. The Bún rieu has a lot of huyết & gặt & the bò kho meat is very tender which is a very important for a great edible bò kho. The host was very attentive & concerned when we didn't finish the egg rolls & wanted to know why . We had to explain to him that we were stuffed & taking it to go. The complimentary shrimp chips was very appreciative & yummy. The warm complimentary Taro/ Tapioca dessert was also a very nice treat. Not too sweet but just perfectly sweet & yummy. Their appetizers were excellent, as it took the cook a few minutes to bring out the fresh bánh xèo to get their outstanding crunchiness/flavor. Service was excellent. "doodle while I order my noodle" I rarely give out 5 stars for a restaurant, but Hoang Gia really surpassed my expectations in a fantastic way. I've always drove past this place and always had an itch to visit, but was too afraid this place was going to be a " Point at picture to order place". However, I was able to come with a few friends (also with a wife that spoke Vietnamese) and all of a sudden it wasn't too scary. For a mom and pop shop, Hoang Gia is remarkedly clean and well kept. You'll have the errant young kid doing his homework in the corner table but there's nothing like growing up in the restaurant. Food ranges from noodle soup, appetizers, vermicelli, rice dishes, party trays and chef specials. They give you crab chips when you sit down as an appetizer. You'll also notice that the tables are covered with paper, which is perfect for my toddler to doodle while I order my noodles! :) . I ended up getting the Bun Rieu Dac Biet which came out with chili peppers, veggies to enhance my bowl of noodles. Halfway through, there was a lady that asked me if I needed more broth for my soup, which I kindly and expressed appreciation denied the ever-so kind gesture. They also gave a complimentary home made yogurt to my toddler! Towards the end they gave us some sweet taro soup to top off our taste buds for free. 1) I loved how mom and pop recognizes mom/dad needs with toddler. 2) I love how this place was a hidden gem that I finally got to try 3) Price for food was very reasonable for the amount of food you get 4) The Perks of crab chips, butcher paper counter tops for toddler to draw on, lady offering extra broth, yogurt AND dessert soup. This was an unsuspecting little restaurant that has a big heart. We went here because we had a friend who wanted some Bánh Hỏi, the Vietnamese woven noodles. The restaurant was clean, and pretty kid friendly. They had butcher paper covering the tables, which to me is great because then my kid could draw on the table and it wouldn't be frowned upon! The owner brought out shrimp chips as an appetizer, and I got the Banh canh soup, which was a huge portion. It was pretty good and my baby loved it. My husband got the Bun Riêu and really enjoyed it as well. It was a decent price. The owner also gave some Che for dessert, which was so sweet of him. I think my favorite part was just how aware and accommodating he was with us having a baby. He brought out an extra bowl when he heard I was planning on sharing my soup with my daughter, along with a pair of scissors. He even offered to have the onions and garnish on the side. When putting stuff down on the table he made sure to put it away from her too so that she didn't burn herself. That level of awareness is next level service and I truly appreciated it! read more

My family and I came here for dinner because we wanted their fish cooked in the oven (cá nướng). It takes 30 minutes for it to be cooked, so I recommend either calling them before arriving or waiting around for the fish to be cooked. They choose really fresh fish to cook. It seems like the fish was fried prior to cooking in the oven to get the extra crispiness, but it was super delicious to put it in spring roll. I am not one to order wonton crisp, but my family wanted it, and it was really crispy and filling with a nice dipping sauce. Their bò lá lốt was decent, but the meat was pretty dry. The owner was super friendly and had time to talk to us personally, so it was overall a great time. The ambiance is nice, nothing formal. Would come here again for their cá nướng. Of note, there are multiple numbers to their restaurant online. One of the numbers doesn't work, but another one does, but sadly I forgot which. read more

I tried one of the top 5 and it was a combo (there were too many options, I didn't know which one to try so I just picked from top 5). I got the thick broth and it was delicious! My first time having thick broth with banh canh too. The portions are a good size. I had leftovers even after splitting my bowl in two. We stop by here for dinner on a Sunday night, we ordered the Bò Lá Lốt and it was delicious . My only suggestion would be to add just a tad of beef fat to the BLL so it would not be too dry.
