This review is coming a little late. On the day of my graduation, I mosied over to Hobbs with my famz for lunch. Now, as a local student, Hobbs is well known and a big deal for certain circles. Namely, circles that can afford to pay ridiculous prices for mediocre food, slow service and an ambience of spoiled rich kids. There were three orders placed (two of my folks split a dish). It took forty minutes to get the meals, all of which were some variation of eggs, toast and maybe meat; I believe all of these really basic breakfast-y kinds of things cost at least 8$ a pop. Drinks came out only after ten minutes. The food was filling but certainly not better than a diner's. As someone who works in a cafe, I really do understand that things don't happen magically in three seconds, but uh there's a Dunkin Donuts across the street. It's better than Hobbs. read more

Good coffee, interesting brunch menu. My BFF who goes to Swat thinks they have weird hours, but I wouldn't really know. We went at about 11am on a Saturday and they were open. I had french toast, she had an omelette. I wish they hadn't put syrup on the french toast, since they had smothered it in brown sugar. It was just too damn sweet. Also, they probably should have used a sturdier bread than what looked like sliced whole wheat sandwich bread from the co-op. And Reddi-Whip? I might just be a snobby New Yorker, but come on guys. I've been to this cafe twice and had an overall good experience! I'm a Chai Tea Latter lover, and their Chai Tea Latter is pretty good. They also have a good selection of bagel sandwiches for good prices. Of course, the cafe is seems to be filled with college students since it's right across Swarthmore college, but it's a great atmosphere. I only give it a 4 because I think staff could work on being more friendly (just a little bit more). read more

Stopped by here to pick up breakfast this morning on the way to Swarthmore. LOCATION: Right by the SEPTA tracks/on the corner. Ample amounts of metered street parking. MENU: I like the idea of $4 prix fixe bagel combo's--e.g. my sister had the smoked salmon cream cheese and I had nutella banana, but I can see how the same six options can get old if you come here a lot. Coffee is OK, better than Dunkin across the street I suppose. DECOR: Interesting local artists' work hanging around that you can peruse/purchase, and some comics are available for browsing if you're into that. Solid five stars because today was my first time here. I'm a bit picky about my lattes as I think many often just taste like milk. I ordered a large vanilla soy latte. It was 1. Beautiful (leaf art in the foam) and 2. Smooth, rich and perfectly portioned 3. Affordable vs. starbucks ; just $4.25. I started coming here a few weeks ago and sort of got hooked. Fairly standard interior but spacious. Typical coffee shop decor with local artists works hanging on the walls. I saw another reviewer mention the interior being "shabby". I didn't get that impression but perhaps I have lower expectations (although I didn't sit on the couch). Good coffee and Lattes, nice free/discounted refill policy I think my second coffee was free and a second Latte was a dollar off. Decent food for a coffee shop. I frequently have a breakfast sandwich which typically is overstuffed (that's a good thing). The lunch menu seems to change daily but the Chicken salad sandwich I had was very good (but a little pricey). I was also here on a friday evening when they had a grill fired up outside for burgers and dogs. I typically come here for a change of scenery while working. Free wifi of course and the staff seems friendly enough that you don't get the impression you have worn out your welcome after a couple hours. The Coffee shop I used to frequent in Ridley Park closed so I was glad to discover that Hobbs was here. Oh I almost forgot... they close at 6PM so keep that in mind. Snow shut down our town and my eggs were expired and my Canadian Bacon looked scary. So I had two choices to eat - Dunkins Donuts for microwave crap or Hobbes. I picked the latter and I'm happy I did. Huge portion of scrambled eggs and cheese, crispy bacon, toast and a nice blend of dark roasted coffee. Fantastic crew working. Eggplant, mozzarella and pesto sandwich=awesome. They do, however, need someone to teach them what to do with an eggplant. That is, something (anything) other than just sticking it in the oven as-is. I really like this place, but the service is kind of messed up - slow, on the rare occasion rude. The guys who run it are really nice, though, so I'm hoping it all gets under control soon and that they stay open. Later hours would be a godsend to Swatties, though; it really is ridiculous how there is nothing available for hungry college students to eat after midnight. Hobbs is a roll of the dice. Do not expect your sandwich to taste just as good as the last one, because it may taste great one day, then be really dry the next. They have reliably good waffles, but only on weekends and Mondays. Service is a mix of what look to be college students that are not fast, but manage, and are friendly. They have forgotten parts of my order, and messed up drinks, but are very apologetic and fix things promptly. I work in Swarthmore and frequently find myself in Hobbs. If you're looking for a good lunch spot go to the Co-op they have consistently great sandwiches and soups, I just prefer not to go to the same place more than twice a week so I'm stuck with Hobbs. read more

Went to Hobbs with a friend who lives in Swarthmore. Our intention was to have beverage and catch-up. We waited ten minutes for our latte and tea. Fortunately they were served in "to go" cups. Rock music at a high volume cemented our exit as we were unable to communicate. Competition across street may be a better option next visit. read more

Hobbs is my go-to place for a latte . . . The people who work there are very friendly and the food is really good too - when I have time, I love to stop and have a piece of quiche, that comes with a yummy arugula salad. It can get crowded, especially on the weekends, but it is worth the wait . . . They have a small menu but the sandwiches, bagels, and pastries are all delicious. The coffee is a five star by far. The food? A bit more hot and miss, and they could up the appeal factor a bunch by decluttering the counter and working on presentation. In a tiny hamlet next to Swarthmore College, though, they have a kind of captive audience and it's heavily patronized by students and faculty so it doesn't incentivize much need to up their game. Awesome little local coffee and eating joint. Apple and brie sandwich on bagel was great, along with other brunch items. Service is great, and of course, coffee is hearty and fresh. Came here on a Wednesday morning for coffee and breakfast. I had a mocha which was much too chocolatey for my taste. I also had a bagel w eggs and cheese. The eggs were scrambled, but pretty runny, making it difficult to eat. Their pastry selection was fairly minimal as well. On a positive note, they did have a nice amount of seating and I did enjoy the local art. read more

Food is good. Coffee is good. It has a hipster-y atmosphere which makes it a fun place to go to. I've been there a few times where there's been bad service. Also the quality of the food can be inconsistent. Hobbs is a much better choice than the Dunkin donuts across the street. It's one of the better restaurants in Swarthmore. read more

Since I've been back and forth between my apartment in Philadelphia and my parents in Delco, I've been visiting Hobbs pretty frequently this week. Highlights included a really satisfying iced chai tea latte, a tasty and filling brunch dish called the blue moon special (generous portions of eggs, home fries, bacon, toast, and coffee), and enough iced coffee to give me the energy of a thousand suns. Coffee choices in town (swarthmore) is among the best. Fresh brew in dark or regular roast and a good variety of espresso based drinks as well as tea. Friendly and courteous staff and relatively fast service. Can get crowded from time to time but you can't hold that against a place. I walked to this charming coffee shop early this sunny and chilly morning with church bells chiming in the background. Since I discovered this place sometime last year, I've become a regular. This is a coffee shop that offers a menu of various freshly cooked foods. Some foods are the same each day and others change according to the preferences of the chef. I always get an egg sandwich with sausage, egg, and cheese on a bagel, and it is consistently the best egg sandwich I get anywhere. The shop offers a comfortable environment with plenty of tables, a couch, and art on the walls. It is an independent family owned business with an individualized touch. Hobbs has been around a year now and the young owner seems to have ironed out most of the kinks, service is friendly and the shop has a mellow feel to it. The coffee from the Chestnut Hill coffee company is excellent. The food service is not super fast, but it's worth the wait as the owner/chef prepares everything from scratch and uses unusual and interesting ingredients (especially on the Fri - Sun brunch menu). I love having a friendly coffee shop so close to where I'm staying. But -- and it's a big one -- the coffee is lousy. It's all caramel middle tones and little of the bite and depth you get from a good espresso. Sorry, but this is the whole point of a good coffee shop. Good coffee! read more
