Kind of reminds me of the ole Woolworths, but not as diverse. More crafts & household odds and ends, than Hobby stuff, but it still useful for some items, like doormats. For some odd reason, they typically have many types of doormats and various other "thing-a-ma-gigs", like analog wall clocks. It is best to go when they have a 50% off sale, and then you can save. They do serve a diverse crowd, and one can see Cal Poly students of all types, including international students. The younger crowd goes mostly for dorm furnishings, while the older locals go for fabric, plastic flowers, and crafts. The service here is really nice at checkouts, but you can feel kind of neglected in store...but not as forgotten as in many Big Box or discount stores. As far as where one wants to shop, it is not like Amazon has moral superiority, over here. At the very least, HL does let you touch the items that one contemplate getting. This is more important when one wants to hang a clock in ones living area for example. Many clocks and other items have deceptively rendered near-fake pictures on Amazon for many items, not to mention fake reviews. It is kind of fun to stop in here for targeted missions that could also include World Market, Nordstroms, and off course Sprouts. If one is on a discount mission, then the nearby Ross's, Five Below, and a short drive to the nearby TJX, Home Goods, Dollar Tree, & Grocery Outlet can take up a whole weekend of time. read more

The bathroom has been like this for months (not sure how long but at least 5 months). I have a stroller with me so the first time months ago I just didn't go but the second time recently I had to pull the stroller as close to the toilet as possible in a small stall and leave the door open to use to bathroom. No hobbies in the lobby! There was lots of small scale, inexpensive furniture arranged in thematic displays on the way into the store. I was expecting an art supply type store, but this is more of a discount store. Think one step down from K Mart and one step up from the Dollar Store. It is, however, the only store left in town that has fabric on bolts. Gone are the days of rifling through piles of remnants at Beverly's and walking away with supplies for diverse projects from upholstery to costumes. Michael's still has sewing notions, yarn and thread, but no fabric. The staff was friendly enough, and in my granny top with lace trim, my hair in a bun, and my rimless "granny glasses," I fit right in with the mostly North County crowd of customers. read more

Seasons come and go, so some times shelves lack but before Christmas shelves are full for months prior. Each store has a difference in atmosphere and stock. I've visited twice now, having traveled through California from a different state that had no Hobby Lobby nearby. Prior had preferred Joann's but I have to drive half hour away. For Yarn Crafts, this store is better than Michael's by far! Michaels Online lost my big order for a group of people learning in a class. Went in to find stained glass that was advertised and couldn't find. After searching for 10 minutes walk around saying out loud "anyone work here" crickets. Had to ask the only cashier on duty and got the short, curt answer, "in the back of the store". Look around the entire back of the store and nothing. On the way out, walking down an aisle in the middle of the store, not in the back, found to glass section, looked and no advertised item. Never going back there again. I love that we have one in San Luis now! I went after a doctor's appointment & it was 40% off fabrics & I made a haul! It was so fun. My treat to myself. Feeling I had nowhere I had to be, I just hung out with me & had the best time! Some days you just have to do that, ya know? My only complaint was that there's not one in Paso yet! After driving past too many times, I finally decided to check it out. For some reason, I thought it had something to do with hobbies, like woodworking or crafts, for people who had time to craft. But I was amazed by the many spectacular interesting "projects" that would actually be fun to do. But more than that, I realized, they have an extraordinary array of silk plants and flowers that actually look real. I've yet to explore the rest of the store because the faux garden shop got my intention. The quality is exceptional and the pieces I selected are well-made and actually look real. This will be my new "hobby" seeking new things to do that give me great peace and joy. Oh, and also just want to add that they had an incredible sale on the Luminara candles (Wickless) that really look beautiful in my home. read more

I am so very disappointed with this place. First they have a 90 return policy even if package is untouched and you have a receipt! Forget getting a refund or exchange. But the main reason was my fabric purchase. I purchased 3 different materials. One of the materials I inquired about what looked like a seem in the fabric cuz it had a pucker. The employee who was handling and cutting the fabric assured me it was a fold. When I took it home to use it the fabric was sewn together on the bolt. I was upset because I asked. When I tried to get an exchange the manager said she needs to find the original bolt to assure I purchased the material there, she accused me of cutting, sewing it back together and then try to get an exchange! How insulting!!! I assured her I purchased the material that way and why would I waste my time for $6.99 piece of fabric. read more

I would give negative stars if I could. My girlfriend and I went into the store in San Luis Obispo to find stuff for my art and and toattooing. We're were looking around that art supplies when someone over the loudspeaker called for a security check to where we were because I have tattoos all over my bodies and face and because I'm mostly Portuguese they automatically assumed I was stealing. An employee there approached me and asked if he could help me with anything. I dropped the hand full of items I had on floor In front of him and I said , " yea you can help me by putting those things away for me cause I'm not giving you guys any business. " quick note , I happened to be dressed , at the time of the incident, in True Religion designer clothes head to toe . About a $700 outfit ; so why would one think I need to steal 32 dollars of art suppplies. They are racist , judgmental , close minded bigots im my opinion. I will never shop at a hobby lobby again.
