I loved their great array of wool items and jewelry and found their wooden gifts adorable! The store was just bursting with gifts and yet felt well organized and neat. Our service was friendly and kind and she wrapped my gift with a string bow - so cute. There are beautiful, punny fair trade cards that are recycled and the proceeds all go to a great cause. Such a beautiful shop!! I am obsessed with their selection of handmade goods. Beautiful table cloths and dish towels, and cute felted bouquets. Could easily spend hours in this store looking at the craftsmanship of all these pieces. Kind workers who were very friendly. I always like checking out Humankind in SLO. It's sandwiched between two other awesome shops (Boo Boo Records and Phoenix Books). There's a great variety of items imported from around the world with an eye to providing income to impoverished people around the world. As such, most of these products are items that are made by hand and unavailable elsewhere. Lots of clothing, jewelry, and home goods. There's also a great handmade card selection. I highly recommend coming in here if you need something for the home or are looking for a gift that you won't be able to find anywhere else. read more

Stumbled up on this place while searching for nearby places of interesting. Stopping in, I noted it reminded me a lot of Ten Thousand Villages. After talking a little with the clerk, I found out they buy from Ten Thousand Villages (small world!) Lots of unique fair trade items. I recently visited HumanKind while on a short weekend trip to SLO. There are so many wonderful stores in SLO but HumanKind is truly unique. There were tons of fun items to choose from - musical instruments, scarves, pottery, chocolate, handbags, gardening tools, books, children's' clothing, etc. And EVERYTHING is 100% Certified Fair Trade! The only hard part was deciding on what to buy - I ended up walking away with a thumb piano made from an old coffee can and some chocolate! read more

The best part of this store is knowing that the products you buy aren't mass produced by large corporations. The only reason I didn't give this store 5 stars was because one of the employees had given me a 2 minute speech on what fair-trade was/is. And even though I may not know the complete inner workings of fair-trade I didn't come to hear a lecture. And as my family and I walked throughout the store the same woman kept coming up to us and pointing out things that were in front of us. Generally just telling us things we could see with our own eyes. (Where the sale rack was, where the dressing room was, ect.) With every item we touched she would dive into the story behind it and how they acquired it. I know she was only trying to help us, but we never asked for any help. We just wanted to look around and enjoy our family time. read more

I purchased a gift here that I ended up not giving. I returned to the store to exchange it for something different. I could not find my receipt, but it was obvious that the item was purchased there as the tag was still attached and there were others like it in the store. I was told by the volunteer that I can't exchange it. Period. I do like the store a lot, and supporting fair trade, organic and local is important to me. It's a certainty that I would have spent more money in the store doing an exchange and I would have been a happy customer doing so. Instead because of my experience, I will probably not return to this store in the future and warn others there is no flexibility, even to exchange, without a receipt (even if tags are still attached) and outside a 30 day window. read more

I adore this place. Many fair trade shops are extremely overpriced (or at least seem to be), which is makes supporting such places difficult. Humankind somehow manages to not overprice their goods. Apparently all the employees (besides being some of the friendliest people on the planet) are volunteers; they are truly in the business of saving the world. stumbled upon this place today while strolling through the neighborhood. it's a great store for gifts for others or just a treat for yourself. the lady at the counter (not sure if she was the owner or not) was really nice and was happy to explain that all items in the store were fair trade products (and without making you feel like an idiot). it was nice to know that i bought something that was made from someone who got paid a fair wage (if not, i'd like a refund!). prices are definitely affordable. i was actually quite surprised they were as low as they were. i almost felt like they should be higher so the people that make/supply the items would get more money. maybe it just means that similar products sold elsewhere just get marked up really high with the profit going to the people that don't need it. great eclectic selection. highly recommended! read more

HumanKind is always getting in new things! Today I stopped in for tickets to the Eco-Fashion Show at Steynberg Gallery on 5/31 (6-9 PM and only $10!) and there was a whole shipment of new clothing items. HK is the first place I go when looking for a gift item. Coffee is great too! It is staffed by dedicated staff and mostly volunteers. It is no great to be able to support fair trade AND do fun shopping! read more
