Some of the menu items are very good. Others ok. But I had something happen on my last visit which bothered me, a lot. I usually sit at the bar and order a beer while the restaurant completes my take out order. This last time I ordered prime rib and a pasta dish and was told that while the pasta dish would be packaged in the kitchen for take out the prime rib would not. They would bring that to me on a plate and I had to package it for take out myself. This despite packaging prior take orders for prime rib at the kitchen. read more

I too attended the the March AARP monthly luncheon at Hockers Family Restaurant and I must say that the meals that were served at our table were scrumptious. We had each of the three St. Patrick's Day offerings (Bangers and Mash, Corned Beef and Cabbage, as well as Fish and Chips) and everyone raved about their meal. Some folks took leftovers home because the serving size was more than enough to eat at one setting. There were 122 people in attendance and the staff worked tirelessly to serve the meals as quickly as possible with the 4 servers that were on duty. In fact, I was seated at the very last table to be served, and we used the wait time to socialize with our tablemates. The food arrived piping hot and was well worth the wait. Speaking with management after the luncheon, we discussed how we wished we could get everyone served a little faster. They agreed. There is good news and bad news about it. The bad news - the restaurant kitchen does not have food warmers, like banquet facilities, so they cannot pre prep hot food. The good news - food is coming out "hot off the grill". Know that the servers will rotate where they start serving each month so that the same table will not be the last one served. All attendees will be served their meal somewhere between 12 and 1. The sound system does have room for improvement, but it is a "wired" system and the wires cannot be placed across the floor to reach the middle of the room (tripping hazard). One contributing factor in people having a difficult time hearing is the number of audience members talking throughout the presentation. Perhaps a greater level of respect shown to the speakers would be helpful. Hockers staff has worked with the AARP organizers making changes as needed. I personally am grateful to the Hockers family for giving us the opportunity to accommodate a much larger audience than in our previous venue. I am looking forward to the upcoming luncheon/meetings and hope that the members exercise a little more patience. read more

Awful just awful experience today at an AARP monthly luncheon - the one and let me just write this again ONE server for 150+ members was ridiculous - meals were ordered in advance so it's a matter of dropping the right meal in front of the right color coded card - another server helped a bit in the end but was tasked with clearing dishes when not everyone was served yet including my table of 8 patiently waiting for their food - I simply could not believe it and my table mates voiced the same concern - another server came out for the dessert delivery but the damage was already done and it's hard to recover after that however it would have been nice if a manager would have gone to the mic, appoligized and promised to be better staffed next time and maybe throw in a gift card for a few bucks to each attendee Bottom line there should have been 8-10 servers all serving food at the same time The sound system needs to be improved with more than 2 speakers and a wireless mic should be added too If this restaurant wants to be a player in the area for hosting large events please regroup and plan for our return before next months meeting Painful just painful read more

Good food, good cocktails! Lively bar and atmosphere. However, the hostesses look sloppy in their attire. And the chairs are uncomfortable, but the booths are fine. read more

The 5 stars are for the staff, always wonderful, especially Emma, Dre, and Shawn....however, the menu changes are terribly disappointing and we will probably return for drinks and the staff, but not for the food. Drey and Ashley were 5 star on service and friendliness. Great bartenders. They have changed up the menu and it was a disappointment. The Caesar salad was bland, not sure if they changed dressing but was so much better with the pine nut. The "new" shrimp and grits was a huge disappointment. Service was horrible. We waited over an hour for our food and one of the meals wasn't even put in! Food was undercooked and not good at all. Crab legs barely had meat. Although we were comped 15%, it did not make up for the bad service and meals. Do not recommend at all! read more

Waitress was fine, but the food was burnt. I ordered a burger medium rare and it came out burnt to a crisp, basically unedible. Same with bacon on our dishes. Our son ordered grilled cheese and it was blackened. I like the ambience and the drinks were great but the food needs serious work. read more

on the plus side, the staff was friendly and helpful. The space is a windowless, industrial warehouse and the food matches the emptiness of the space. (it was their supermarket years ago before they took over the old Harris Teeter on Fred Hudson) Started with a ceasar salad with overcooked chicken, nothing worth ordering again. Then a caprese flatbread that was simply awful. It looked worse than it tasted, and it looked completely unappetizing Soggy crust, tasteless mozzarella and two leaves of basil. The food tasted like the hardware store employees came next door and worked as cooks. Owning a supermarket and hardware store doesn't translate to "lets open a restuarant". there are plenty of other restaurants in the area that are far better. Yes, the space is large and loud, but they told us that they are going to address that in the fall/winter. Big bar with five televisions. So would be a good place to watch sports. Our food came out quickly and we would come back. Caesar salad was fine, but cheese on top was so so. Dressing was thick and tasty. Had a special gazpacho soup which was very good. Crab cake was good but small, asparagus was fresh and a the smashed red potatoes were very good and a generous portion. Meatloaf sandwich was huge and very good as well as the coleslaw. Hush puppies were very good, not greasy but absent of corn kernels. Would return and try the fresh crabs. Chicken sandwich was a thin cutlet on a big roll. Would not get again. read more

The service and food were excellent. We tried the fried chicken dinner, a caprese, scallops, and the chowder. All were excellent.

Good-server was great bar was great clam app and oyster app good Not so good - cheesy bread. Plain loaf bread no flavor with slab of cheese on top. Meals mediocre at best. Hope it gets better. Four of us arrived around 4:45 for dinner. Waited about 5 to 8 minutes for someone to greet & seat us. Then we were shocked there was new menu. Some of the items from original menu were discountinued (such as cornbread) etc. and some of the prices for new things were quite high. There were only 3 other booths/tables filled so they were certainly not busy. Took a while to get our food. When the food came two of the four of us had cold food that we sent back. Told our server & instead of immediately going to kitchen to get the order fixed they stopped and took another parties order first which in turn made us wait longer for the rest of our food. Server never said they were sorry for the wait or food being cold and honestly was to busy talking instead of taking care of their table. We have been here several times and had good food and good service but it was far from good service tonight. Very disappointed. read more

I hope this review is constructive and helps. First, the restaurant is beautiful- This place could be something very special. However, the food is very average. There is not a chef in the kitchen and it shows in quality, presentation and taste. Also, both times I went they were extremely understaffed. This last time I was in Mr. and Mrs Hocker was there so they have to be aware of the issues. it was obvious there were no policies and procedures in place for serving food, quality service, etc. Our waiter was incredible, but he was doing everything from seating people to serving to bussing tables. After dinner, we went to get ice cream and it was a disappointment again quality issues with Hershey's ice cream. You might sell that in the summertime when everything else is packed, but if people have a choice, they're not gonna go here for a long. Again, I hope this helps you need a chef and a general manager, and you could have a big-time success. read more

If you're looking for a place that treats you like family, Hockers is it. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome and genuinely cared for. Even though the place was busy, there was no wait--which is almost unheard of these days. The service was excellent--friendly, attentive, and quick without feeling rushed. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. And the food? Absolutely delicious! The crabs were fresh, perfectly seasoned, and cooked just right--truly some of the best around. Went for lunch on a Saturday. I ordered the lobster roll. it arrived and it was cold and dry, sent it back and it was better but no real lobster chuncks, just chopped up.. Husband had a hot dog, again sent it back, cold roll. Better second time. read more

My mom and I met here for a New Year's Day lunch together and it was delicious as always. I'm a local but my mom isn't and it was her first time coming here. We had the crab and corn chowder for an appetizer which was absolutely chock full of huge pieces of crab meat- and no shells! The broth was absolutely delicious and perfectly seasoned. For our meals I had the pulled pork sliders and she had the crab cake sandwich. My pork sliders were so delicious that my mom ordered some to-go to take home to my dad in Clayton! She absolutely loved her crab cake sandwich as well. The crab cake was full of real crab meat and not a ton of filler and peppers like most other restaurants. Our server was Kathy (Cathy?) and she was wonderful. She was so friendly and attentive, it felt like we were eating lunch at a friend's house. Deanna at the front was so kind and friendly too! It was so nice to not only eat somewhere with such great quality food but where there are such friendly staff. My mom enjoyed the experience so much that she plans on bringing my disabled dad down to eat here sometime in the near future. Which is another thing, this restaurant is absolutely the place to bring people who are disabled or handicapped. The tables aren't packed closely together, they're actually fairly spread out and there are no stairs. People in wheelchairs, such as my dad, are able to maneuver through the restaurant without any problems. It is truly handicap friendly which seems to be rare for restaurants.
