The crusted tuna and the pot roast were delicious. Our waiter John and the chef worked with us to avoid certain food allergies and offered slight modifications to the menu that met everyone's needs. I wanted to enjoy this so much more. We live full-time near Bethany Beach, but just got around to trying Off the Hook for the first time last night. The highlights (and lowlights): The service was awful: We arrived at 5:17 and were seated at 5:22. Drinks took 26 minutes to deliver and the order was wrong. My FiL clearly asked for a Pinot Grigio, but a Sangria was delivered. Cody, the server*, politely repeated that he ordered the Sangria, but that did not happen (my FiL drinks only dry wines). We waited to toast my in-laws anniversary, but had to wait another 7-8 minutes for the correct glass of wine to be delivered. There is no attention to detail in the dining room. The staff are on island time. The first appetizer arrived at 6:08--46 minutes after we sat down! At 6:20, I bussed our table. (After dinner, I bussed our table a second time). Even trying to pay the check Cody was MIA. He came by the table perhaps six times from 5:22-6:45. *There seems to be a lot of summer hires here--folks that want to hang out at the beach, but need to work to pay the rent. The training has be to incredibly minimal. I would guess no family meal, no 5-minute daily wine pairing rundown...basically no front of the house training. When the customer has to stack dirty plates and get a busboy's attention to grab them TWICE...not good, especially for the prices at Off the Hook. The food was quite hit or miss. The good: the crab bisque was excellent...really amazing! The scallop appetizer was also delicious with a base of grits and bacon underneath. However... The bad: we wanted to share the scallop appetizer and asked Cody how many scallops came with that. He said "three". The app was delivered with TWO scallops (Yes...TWO scallops for $19). They were not huge scallops...so 16/20 count. Wholesale, $18 a pound, less than a dollar each. To charge $19 for an appetizer with TWO scallops? Wow! The dish cost perhaps $3.25. A bottle of wine that retails for $15 is $30 in a restaurant. I get it, but marking up TWO scallops with some grits to $19 is insane. I asked the manager about the missing scallop. He advised that the entree came with three scallops--the app two. The entree was $39!! $39 for three scallops! If these were U/8 or U/15 scallops, I maybe could see it, but two 16/20 scallops for $19 and three for $39 is nuts. The pappardelle (appetizer portion) was completely flavorless. It was not cooked with any salt and pepper. It tasted like buttered noodles you find on a kid's menu. Adding salt and pepper (at the table) did little to fix it. My wife's pappardelle entree was equally bland. She tried mine; I tried hers. She looked right at me and said "There is no seasoning on this!". My thought exactly. My FiL had the salmon. He reported that it was tasty. While it was cooked well, $35 for an approximately 5 oz portion is again nuts. As a local, I really wanted to enjoy this meal. It was an anniversary dinner for my in-laws. $260 for four people with bad service and hit-or-miss food and the portions described is not good. I'm not a tourist. Lastly, I cannot forget to mention the FLIES. This is an INSIDE, white tablecloth dining establishment with $30-40 entrees, NOT a beachfront bar. 3-4 houseflies, accompanied by a gnat, joined us for dinner. Crazy. Bethany Beach, Delaware has limited options for dining and cars lined up 100 deep on the main road into town. This can be the only explanation for Off the Hook being so busy, so often. Tourists from NYC and Philadelphia don't bat an eye at paying $39 for three scallops. I don't know what other explanation makes sense. read more

If I could leave ZERO stars I would. I have never had a restaurant made me feel more unwelcome. From the moment we walked inside we were treated by the manager and we asked if we could get a drink at the bar and he immediately asked us to wait outside in the pouring rain. We stood at the bar for 10 minutes until we were acknowledged. As soon as we paid for our drinks we were again asked to stand outside. Owner really wants you to have a good experience. Servers seem to care. Dinging one star because every time we're here the sequencing of food is off. In short, she simply loves the spot and "ordered the kung poa calamari, tuna tataki , her meemaw got a shrimp spaghetti in a vodka sauce and her mom got some salad. All was at minimum a 7.5/10. As you can see from my more than ten past reviews over 4 years and my last review in August 2025 this is now one of my top three happy hour restaurants during the off season. I will summarize my four most recent happy hour off season visits. We were first here at the bar with my six family and friends. Well finally the off season happy hour half price dinner entrees have finally returned here starting around mid October with pretty much the same entrees and menu as last year. They subsequently updated the half price entrees in early November. All items have pretty much returned here except for some new entrees. The good news is that at least two new half price happy hour dinner entrees were added including the surf and turf with espresso encrusted 4 ounce demi filet mignon with two skewered shrimps, yukon mash, tomato garnash with blue cheese in the middle of the tomato for $40 or half price for only $20. I never had espresso encrusted filet mignon, therefore I ordered and enjoyed mine medium rare. I could barely taste the encrusted espresso. I ended my dinner with my favorite Fiddlehead's draft honey porter for $6. My total bill was $111 with half price discount of $36.50 so my final bill was $77. On my second return I enjoyed my ahi tuna rice bowl with broccoli, ginger fried house rice, sprouts and ginger vinaigrette for $36 or half price for $18. My total bill was $72 excluding gratuity. On my third return I again enjoyed the espresso encrusted 4 ounce demi filet mignon, which I had ordered medium rare, but was over cooked to medium. I did not complain about returning my filet for a replacement, however I did show it to bartender Dennis. Next time I will order my filet rare. On my fourth return I enjoyed my usual cosmos and my ahi tuna rice bowl which was always properly cooked ahi style. Bartender Dennis always remembers I prefer a little extra spice, without me even asking for my Sriracha. Dennis recommended both of the above entrees. See my most recent pic of the new menu. Chef Cowan waved to me at the bar. Bartender Dennis served us very well supported by our usual excellent recommendations and conversations. Chandra and Cameron also said hello. The staff here are very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. On Black Friday I purchased another $1k in gift cards for the off season from Off The Hook and Hooked in OC. One of several hook restaurants . We started with a beet and arugula salad. Fresh ingredients with a nice vinaigrette got us off to a good start. Complementary bread slices and seasoned olive oil accompanied the salad spoke to the generosity of the restaurant. Speaking about largess, the restaurant started its buy one entree, get a lesser priced one free on Tuesday through Thursday. This deal is off season only. October through May. I had the halibut. It was cooked perfectly leaving it moist and tender. It was a humus for texture, wild mushrooms and onions that popped. My wife had scallops over polenta and corn chutney. The latter was great, and the halibut was excellent (i am allergic ) according to my wife. Both of our entrees had generous port Alas, too full for dessert, but it should be obvious. We went for our first time on a "50% off entrees" Tuesday evening recently. We had a short wait, unfortunately they weren't serving outside due to lack of servers. Everyone there is very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious - I got the maple salmon, my husband got the shrimp and grits. Both dishes were delicious and beautifully presented. The only negative was that due to the place being fully booked, it was extremely loud in there, with each table talking louder over the next to be heard. Spinach salad, and wings.. let me tell you as a previous server for 20 years, I've handled a lot of salads and wings over the years and these were top-notch. The pictures will show that these were to go items that could be plated right up at the restaurant and served just as they looked. You know when you see a commercial burger that looks perfect but it never looks like that when you get it, not the case here. I met a friend in Bethany for lunch today. Off season, there are fewer places open. Neither one of us had dined at Off the Hook before, but it was a home run--I'm so glad we found it! We shared the calamari appetizer. It was really tasty and just the right amount of crunchy. I ordered the fish sandwich. It came on a really nice brioche bun. The fish was hot & the coating was very tasty. They serve pesto fries, which I was not sure about, but they were wonderful! The place has a nice bar and the decorations are very stylish. The food at Off The Hook is very good. The hummus appetizer was really tasty, it had olive oil, an olive caponata. and tomato tabbouleh like sides that really hyped the flavor up. The And Chips is Buttermilk Fried Cod with fries that never disappoints with good portion sizes, tasty cocktail and tartar sauce, and side of Cole Slaw which had red onions in it, not my favorite. It also had fries with pesto that was excellent. The Crispy Flounder sandwich with tomato, and lettuce was great,as it had just the right amount of crunch. It also had the delicious pesto fries. Have been here many times on each trip to Bethany area. Off the hook always a good option. Latest trip was maybe not quite as smooth, menu seems to have narrowed and have less choices. We sat in the the dining room and one of my boys wanted something off the other menu which they made difficult. Then I ordered the grilled wahoo, they brought me the tiniest bit of fish I kind of laughed. I'm not someone who needs a huge portion to be happy but it was about the size of 2 thumbs. I saw someone else nearby had one twice the size. I didn't really want to make a fuss as was there with my mum for a nice meal, made a quick remark to the waitress and she was very snarky. It's full of octopuses inside. Atmosphere was cute. Didn't hear the music, but not too loud with everyone talking. Happy hour was great until six at the high tops. Drinks were good. The espresso martini didn't have real espresso only cold brew in it, but it was still good. my sister asked for no bacon in her linguine with clams and she got bacon in it, but we were able to send it back for another one. Off the hook has a really cool vibe and an amazing selection to choose from we started with the hummus, the Greek salad and the fish salad. I don't know the seasoning on the pita bread, but it was a little strong. Everything else was flavorful and exceptionally prepared I ordered the muscles Diablo and I must say, it was pretty spicy but good. Crab court chowder was excellent. My family also ordered the fish and chips and said it was a nice hardy piece of fish. We had excellent service. I definitely would go back and recommend you try this place. Great meal. We had the fish dip, lobster linguine m, and crab cakes. Everything was great as was the service.

We have dined here several times, and each time, there is a very annoying sickening sweet smell that lays heavy in the air, and makes it very difficult to taste your meal. Everything tastes like the heavy scent in the air...At first I thought it was from a cheap scented candle, however it was determined that it comes from air fresheners that they use in the bathrooms. The smell fills the dining area and is overpowering. I am sure that there are code required fans in the restrooms, and that the air fresheners are not necessary, however when the management was questioned regarding it, they took an attitude, like, Of course we have air fresheners in the bathroom.... Our ability to taste is directly tied to our ability to smell. Pinch your nose, and try to experience the taste of something...you can't. When I tell you this heavy smell is disruptive to dining, I am dead serious. It permeates every part of the dining room. If you stay too long, it gives you a headache...one of those headaches that starts with a mild burn in the sinuses. Also, just another observation, the bus girl who cleans the tables, goes around the restaurant between tightly spaced tables, with a spray bottle with a blue liquid in it, spraying clouds of chemicals into the air, while the rest of us are still trying to enjoy a drink and our food. (She uses the same towel that she cleans the seats off with, to clean the table tops...) We had to ask her to please not spray as the mist was wafting over onto our plates. Again, it is difficult to discern taste, when there are so many chemicals in the air. It is very unhealthy, and despite having some decent meals, we are not coming back. Heavy fragranced cleaners and air fresheners are known carcinogens, and totally unnecessary in a nice restaurant. It isn't a gas station or a rest stop...it is a cozy restaurant. Unless you want to eat your dinner while being fumigated with carcinogens, I would suggest you choose another place to eat. The management seemed unwilling to acknowledge or change the situation. read more

Weds was 1/2 off entree night - not to be missed!! My shrimp & grits was wonderful- grits were creamy & the shrimp was delightful. Lots of flavor! My husband got the pork chop w sweet potato whip & it was a little disappointing in that it was more of tenderloin than a chop & they were little light on the whip.
