Disappointing First-Time Experience…read more I got my husband a gift card to Hammer & Nails for Christmas since it looked like a great place to treat himself and enjoy a premium barbershop experience. As a first-time guest, he was supposed to receive a complimentary $60 upgrade that included a haircut, shampoo, conditioning scalp massage, razor outline, aftershave massage, and hot towel. Unfortunately, the experience fell short in almost every way. His barber (a tall redhead) seemed rushed from the start. The session, which was supposed to be around 45 minutes, barely lasted 20 minutes. He had to ask for the shampoo and conditioning--which were supposed to be part of the package--and the scalp massage was quick and not relaxing at all. The razor outline never happened, the neck shave isn't even included, and even the hot towel had to be requested. For a "premium" service, the attention to detail and pampering were just not there. My husband left saying he could've gotten a better cut and experience at Supercuts in 15 minutes. I was glad I didn't load too much money onto his gift card because if the next visit isn't better, he definitely won't be going back. Hammer & Nails has a great concept, but the execution today was mediocre at best. Probably skip unless it's a gift card.

I've been going to Corey for at least 4 years so this review is long overdue. I found Corey by…read moregoogling "Asian men's hair" and he appeared on the bottom of the first page. At the time, he was close to where I lived. Since that time, he is now far from where I live and his availability and my work hours on occasion make it difficult to schedule...but he is worth it. Three things make him stand out better to me than any other person that has cut my hair: 1. I usually try to get a haircut every 5 weeks. I can give myself a fade on the sides (or at least, he is kind enough to not give me his real opinion!) But due to life and work, getting a regularly scheduled haircut isn't always the case. However, I feel like I can go a few weeks longer without my hair going native on me. It just keeps its shape. 2. Having straight, black, Asian hair, I've always had to use product to get it to lay down especially on certain mornings. As my hair got longer and more unruly, I would feel like I would have to use more product. Corey's haircuts almost require no need for product in my hair. Sometimes, I just use a leave-in conditioner to hold things in place or I've even just left the house with nothing in my hair on occasion. For me, this is unheard of since 7th grade. 3. I've always characterized the time after a haircut as occurring in 3 phases. The immediate phase when the hair is shortest, the "sweet spot" phase when the haircut looks sharp, and the end when the hair is too long and you need a hair cut. The "sweet spot" is the period where you enjoy the haircut. Where you look in the mirror and gleam at the high and tight fade. Where your hair is manageable and you don't have to think about your hair amongst the myriad of other things you have to worry about in your life. Corey's haircuts have the longest "sweet spot" period out of all the haircuts I've ever had. By far. Other than that, Corey is just a really good dude. He is easy to talk to and time just easily passes between us.
