I graduated Penn State in 2010 and am well versed in the local pizzas. I spent a few years traveling the country and have eaten pizza in OH, OK, MD, WV, TN, AR, and VA. I recently returned to Centre County and can honestly say Hofbrau is the best pizza around. I've eaten at Hofbrau multiple times and each time was great. The crust is always baked perfect, just crunchy enough but not burnt. The sauce is also amazing. It's a sweeter sauce but pairs well with the cheese. Hofbrau does NOT cut corners when it comes to cheese. The pizzas are loaded with cheese. The restaurant is conveniently located with the only downfall being parking but there are normally spots available on the street. Bring quarters for the parking meter. Hofbrau gets busy so I would recommend showing up with extra time if you have plans after dinner. read more

First the food is always delicious and prices are very reasonable for the area. Pizza is top notch, and almost like a NYC slice, almost. The service, excellent staff! They make sure you get taking care of and are always accommodating and friendly. It's very much a local place. Friday night local crowd is worth going to just see, and the wait staff deserves something extra just for the Friday locals that come in. You'll want to get a few beers and take it all in while you enjoy some pizza, wings or even one of the great hoagies. The only thing I wish they'd do is add to the draft beer list. If you are in the area, this is a great place to go even it's just to people watch on Friday nights. You'll need a few beers or cocktails while you are there. read more

The regular prices are 4.35 per half and 7.40 per dozen, w/25 cent celery & bleu cheese or ranch dressing Try all of the different flavors (Mild, Hot, Butter Rum BBQ, Texas Ranch, Southwest Peppercorn, Italian Parmesan, but beware - the hot hot wings could melt the chrome off a trailer hitch. Drink Specials and Pizza Specials during the week. People - this is the best Pizza anywhere. These are not my favorite wings because they are more BBQ oriented than Buffalo sauce and are too wet and messy to eat without a frequent wipe with a napkin. Italian grinder is my go to. I LOVE their house dressing. If you want one of the best waitresses get Ruth, she never gets anything wrong and is super sweet. But all their staff is nice too. Their wings sauces are good. Only thing is the place is small but that's just a Bellefonte thing and it's a little dark. This is the place to go in Bellefonte for pizza! As with many restaurants in Bellefonte, parking is tricky as there are only a handful of spots so get there early. The place is dated inside but it adds to the charm- the seats are cracked, and every table that we ever ate at was wobbly... but that pizza! There's a disclaimer on the menu about the crust- it's thin and has char spots on the bottom due to how it's cooked, but it's intended, and it makes the pizza fantastic. The pies are big and thin with a crispy crust and the toppings are loaded on there. We always got the veggie and it was easily the best veggie pizza I've had. Down side is that the center sogged out quickly but who cares? That's what pizza does. If it's your first time going there, watch your step when walking in- there's a bit of a stoop that's easy to trip over. read more

Not bad. The parking isn't the easiest (hurts the rating) and there was construction which made it tougher. The service was very good and the food was out QUICK!!! We ordered pizza and it wasn't bad. I'm tough when it comes to pizza because "I like what I like". It was fresh and hot but FOR ME the dough wasn't spectacular and not as crispy as I like. Cheese and sauce were typical for the area. Hands down the best Buffalo chicken pizza in the region. Amazing. Pepperoni was great quality meat, and the pizza was delicious. A touch more cheese than what I like, so next time I'll ask to go light on the cheese. The wings were cooked to perfection. Crispy, not chewy. Disclaimer: this review is of a past experience quite some time ago. The food is greasy and the service is poor. I have never walked out on a restaurant because of poor service until I came here. Whoever waited on our table came off as homophobic and hostile while making remarks about my friends' personal appearance. This kind of behavior should not be acceptable in any service environment. I only came to the restaurant to have a warm group gathering with my friends. We were the only people in the restaurant, so we weren't too quiet. I'd understand if the server was annoyed and wanted us to calm down, but if that's all they wanted then they should have said so. Their remarks were personal attacks. Moving here from San Francisco, I am a die hard fan of East coast pizza...and have tried almost every place in State College and Bellefonte on a quest for good pizza. Hofbrau made my dreams come true. Found out all my neighbours are super fans too. My favourite is the pepperoni pizza as they use the small ones thar curl into little cups with crispy edges. Can't find that anywhere else anymore. You can also order thin crust which is very close to new York pizza. Have had other food on the menu as well and have never been disappointed. Great selection of draft beers too. Also they have different daily specials which us a nice treat. Place is super cute. Semi-round booths, Christmas light lighting, old photos framed, dim lighting, just a cute place to go and bring friends or a date. Nice atmosphere. I ve always found the wait staff to be very friendly too. Just wish they delivered! You won't be disappointed. Definitely my favourite pizza in the area! read more

Pizza is best I've ever had. Anywhere. We go all the time on Thursday for the $10 large pizza special and get pepperoni. The meat lovers is even better. Wings are best I've had anywhere and the consistency is on point. Can't tell you how many times I've had good wings from a restaurant then the next time they absolutely suck. These are crispy AF with not even one having flabby skin or weird taste from bad oil. Get the Tim's sauce on wings you won't be sorry. The staff here is great and extremely friendly! read more

Wow! I can't believe it! DAMN GOOD pizza does exist in Central Pennsylvania. The place deserves five stars by default -- it is that far above its competition. This review isn't one of those stereotypical "I'm from New York and we have the best pizza blah blah blah" BUT I am from the NYC Metro area and have been on the hunt for decent pizza since I moved to the State College area. Tried many of the Brother's locations in the area (no, they aren't all related), Corrinado's, Hi-Way, Pizza Mia, Mamma Lucrezia's, Canyon, so on and so forth. I guess I'm a local pizza veteran. Hell, I even gave Weis pizza a try, but I digress... Hofbrau takes the cake. The crust is unique: solidly crispy and bubbly. The sauce is nice, you can tell its fresh. Same goes for the cheese, and they give you a very healthy serving. The only complaint I have is that the pizza does flop a bit toward the end of the slice. If they cooked a smidge longer (which I believe you can request), it would be perfecto. Nevetheless, its probably (highly likely) the best pizza joint in Centre County. Prices are reasonable too. $12.50 for a large (I guess PA calls it xtra-large or 16") plain pie. You won't be disappointed. read more

I've been living in the State College area for a few months and decided to give Hofbrau a try last week with a friend of mine. I think for the Bellefonte/State College area, Hofbrau is definately some of the best pizza you can get, but if you're connoisseur and hail from a region known for good pizza, you won't be blown away by Haufbrau's offerings. For dinner we dined on a traditional large cheese pie and a dozen wings. We ordered half a dozen wings, which were priced above what most places will charge for a full order of 12. Considering the price, and after reading the description on the menu about "signature sauces" and "Jumbo" wing sizes that "required two hands to eat", I was expecting to have some of the best wings of my life. The wings were average, nothing extraordinary, and definitely not worth ordering again at the price paid. We ordered Texas Ranch sauce, which really did not pop with any kind of flavor. I sampled their hot sauce on the side with my pizza and can tell you that it was much more flavorful and enjoyable. Ultimately, I can say that I've had much better wings from side street Bars than at Hofbrau so I suggest passing on them if you find yourself eating there. The large size Pizza came out extremely fast (just shortly after the wings arrived) and was more than enough for the both of us. The pizza was composed of smaller slices, around 12 or more if I remember correctly, so it would be great for groups of 3 or more. The best part about Hofbrau's pizza was the dough - it was thicker than average yet light and airy. Although the dough was great, there wasn't much sauce on the pizza, which resulted in a sort of bland taste. I think if you're going to have a thicker crust pie you need to compensate for it by applying more sauce, otherwise you're just tasting dough and cheese....but that's my opinion. Overall, Hofbrau's "famous" pizza was OK. When I dined there the place was just starting to fill up with locals (it's a small dining room so you're lucky to get a seat on weekends). While the locals may swear by this stuff, I'll pass. read more

Chose this joint based on the reviews and was not disappointed. Although the restaurant foyer was a little uninviting, I walked in to a cozy, darkly lit pizza place with wrap around booths. My waiter was very attentive, and the pepperoni pizza I ordered was de-lish. The pepperoni was the little round kind that gets cupped around the edges and bakes nice and crispy. I also ordered a small house salad which was tasty and had all the fixin's. I would love to come back here on a bitter cold wintery night for some more hot pizza. My kinda place. read more

I have been here twice and I will only now order pizza from here. Very dive-y and has a homey feel. Not great for large groups as it's a smaller place but I would recommend this place hands down. The first time I ordered a pizza with fresh tomatoes and ricotta cheese. I'm never going back to not having ricotta on my pizza. I also had their wings on a Tuesday, which were half priced. Not the best wings I've had but still very good. They are average size and they have a variety of sauces for the wings. The second time, I did a pizza with ricotta (duh) and sweet roasted peppers. I'm not sure what was better, tomatoes or the sweet peppers. Both were probably some of the best pizza I've ever had. Cheesy (even beyond the ricotta), chewy crust, and cooked to perfection. Even better the next day! The second time I went the large pizzas were $10 verses $13 (it was a Thursday). Would recommend and will be going back sooner rather than later! read more

Probably the Best Pizza anywhere, They use quality ingredients and serve a hearty Pizza that is very tasty and satisfying. Have ate here quite a few times and always get a ground beef pizza . Tonight was the same buy the lady gave us meatball instead of ground beef . I nicely told her we got meatball instead of ground beef she looked at me like I was nuts and told me the meatball is the ground beef and vice versa. Didn't feel like arguing with her because the waitstaff is usually rude unless your a regular to the place .
