    One slice of pepp

State College, for being a large college town, struggles in the world of good pizza. There's not much to rave about but Benny's makes a good attempt at fixing that problem. They are a small shop on Fraser St. with limited indoor and outdoor seating. Parking would be on a side street or a nearby parking garage with a little walk to make it here. They make large pies (28") with slices advertised as one (1) being equal to a standard four (4) from national chains. I will say it was a big slice and one was all I needed for around $6. Their full pies are around $45-50 and I believe contain 8 slices. That's not cheap but per their logic that's about 4 - commercial chain 14" pizza's. Benny's is a fairly new establishment and it had a good line at lunchtime. From what I could tell they pre make their pies and add toppings per order for single slices. A fresh pie would definitely be better. My pepperoni slice came out piping hot (burned my mouth off). They have a good assortment of toppings and hot sauce for everyone's use. The pizza was crispy, which I love, and it was good. It had a good sweet sauce with some strong cheese. I love pizza, and I may be ranking this more globally, but locally it's a great stop.

This was my favorite pizza in college (chain in the VA/NC area), and it's a dream having one in State College. Cheese slices are massive and only $5, toppings $6, specialty (rotates monthly) $7 and one is more than enough per person. Everything comes out fresh, crispy, and hot. Inside is small, but there's enough seats for a quick meal. The food came out fast, the staff was friendly and helpful. We're finally getting a place to fill the pizza void that is State College and I can't wait to keep coming back.

This is a very small pizza shop that's brand new to State College. They serve 14" slices, cut from 28" pies at a very reasonable price. They call it a Virginia slice and claim it's 3-4 times the size of a regular slice, but really it's 1.5-2 times the size of a Brothers' pizza slice. Of course they offer both dine in and carry out, but they have very limited seating due to the shop size. There is countertop seating, but a lot of people waiting for their order will be using it. The crust is fantastic! It's a mix between NY-style and crispy, thin crust. It's like a NY-style slice with a flaky, slightly crispy bottom. So far I'm loving it. Their cheese is pretty good, which they claim is a custom blend. I do detect a variety of cheese in there, but it's difficult to place. There is a bit more tang than your normal Mozzarella blends. Perhaps some Provolone, brick cheese, and may be a hint of Fontina, Asiago, Parmesan/Romano? It's tough to tell, but it is unique and tasty. Unfortunately, I was really let down that their pepperoni wasn't 'cupping' pepperoni. On their web site they show photos with cupping pepperoni and tout all of their ingredient sources. Honestly, the pepperoni wasn't any better than prepackaged Hormel. But don't let that discourage you, as you absolutely have to try it just for the unique crust. And $5 for cheese and $6 for pepperoni or sausage slices are good deals.

I never leave one star reviews like this, but I can truly say that this place had the most burnt pizza l've ever tasted. It's actually unbelievable. When I tried to bite into the upper section of the pizza (not just crust) it was rock hard, so crunchy I couldn't even chew it! I shouldn't have been served something like this. It's unfortunate that I was served at all. The pizza wasn't even warm; practically inedible, it was very bad. I have a feeling that this place is good on certain nights, but tonight was not nice.

Came here for late night snack and got a single slice of pizza big enough to feed a family of four. Reall enjoyed it.

Ended up needing a late night food stop when we got in to town - hands down the best pizza we have had in State College! We will be back!

For an area with slim vegan pickings, this felt like a gold mine. We ended up trying a few menu items and they were all delicious and tasted quite fresh. My biggest gripe was that the risotto was made with a medium grain rice rather than a traditional Arborio, and that the prices for food were on the higher end given the portion sizes. The cider flight was delicious. There is plenty of seating, include extensive outdoor seating that looks out to the forests surrounding. Indoors is filled with spooky, eclectic industrial decor. The staff were friendly and thoughtful. It's a gem of a spot!

Our hostess, who we later found out was the owner, explained to us that if we wanted food, we could order it from outside where there was a traveling chef with a pizza oven. This was a big change from the usual menu and what we had expected. We decided to go with the flow, take a seat at the Ouija board table, place our drink orders, and go outside to order food. This week the chef had a woodfired pizza oven. Keep in mind, cider is the focus here. So, my husband's old fashioned was made with cider. Hearing this, I asked for my cider on the side rather than in my cosmo. We learned that the owner's background is movie set design and that she worked on movies like Harry Potter, so the decor was a combination of old industrial plant and haunted house. The bar had "potions" with smoke oozing out. There were also skeletons and skulls throughout the restaurant along with spooky photos that changed from normal to scary. She even allowed us to explore the different back rooms one of which she called the "swamp room." The pizza was good, and we enjoyed listening to the live music which wasn't overwhelmingly loud. Overall, everyone was kind and made us feel welcome. We later ordered the blueberry cobbler for dessert which was warm and tasty.

Due to this, they only had fans to keep cool while circulating the outdoor air. Since we had our pup with us, we were only able to sit in the patio area, but it's not like the "indoor" area was really indoors. Anyways, I wasn't in the mood for drinking, so just had some lunch here. There's two restaurants combined at the food counter (which used to be food trucks here). You can get pizza from pizza and subs from Flo Bros Pizza and wings, burgers and sandwiches from Marin Eats. I had the Crabcake Sandwich ($15) with Tots (+$2). The sandwich was solid and tots were crispy. It's a nice space to hang out with a group. There are pinball machines, cornhole, and games for entertainment. It's nicely situated next to a creek, so you get a bit of nature too.
