Don't be fooled, do not base your judgement of the food by the exterior, the outside appearance is much better than the food inside. We did not see any smoke from a smoker so it is unknown how the meat is actually cooked. There were two customers at the order area in front of us but it still took about 15 minutes before they could take our order. Just taking orders was a very slow process although I saw at least 5 people behind the counter. They have pork that you can get sliced or chopped. We ordered chopped pork. The pork was "chopped" into 3/4" to 1" cubes. The meat was cold, chewy, and flavorless. Zero flavor. The bread served with the dinner is just plain white loaf bread, not Texas toast or some other type of bread. It was soft and fresh but not toasted, they just took it out of the package and laid it on the plate. The sweet tea tasted as if it were made with a little hint of mop water, it was pretty nasty. As I mentioned, the meat was cold but the beans were so hot (temperature wise) they I may have lost a layer of skin on my tongue. There were dirty spots all over the floor. There were drinks spilled on multiple tables but no one was cleaning up the tables. Everything is served in or on styrofoam so not very environmental friendly. I do not like writing bad reviews, but this one seemed to be well-deserved. The signage on the front says it was voted "Best in Phenix City" but there is no year, so maybe not so recent. If you have no taste buds, this may be okay for you, but next time we will continue on our way and drive right by. Hopefully management can use the honest review and improve their business. Ever on the hunt for BBQ for the drive between Atlanta and PCB, we stopped at Hog Rock on a recommendation. Super easy to get into from the main drag in Phenix City, the building is a bit oldish looking, but the interior was clean and neat with plenty of seating. Service is order at the counter; the ladies were pleasant and the order was correct. As is our rule when trying a new BBQ place, Hubs and I both got the pork sandwiches. You can pick sliced, chopped, or pulled. We went with chopped. The meat wasn't super smoked, but it was moist and otherwise well cooked. Their sauce is mustard based and comes regular and spicy. Hubs declared the spicy not spicy at all. I found the regular a bit thin and lacking any definitive flavor. 3 stars because it is convenient, service was pleasant, the food, while not memorable, is decent, and the prices were very good. We were on the road towing a 5th wheel and looking for someplace to stop for lunch with enough room to park the rig. Spotted a McDonalds next to a big empty parking lot and pulled in. Then I noticed Hog Rock on the other side of the parking lot. Should have gone to McDonalds. I had pulled pork - it was more like BBQ soup. It looked like the meat had been put into a blender with about 50% sauce. All I could taste was the sauce. My wife had Chopped (read cubed) pork - she said it had very little flavor. No tomato based sauce, just vinegar style and mustard style. Fries were cold and tasted like they had been cooked 15 or 20 minutes before. read more

With the 5 for $5 sandwiches advertised all the time, I hesitated to go in because how good could it be? The hubs wanted a barbecue sandwich so I gave in. The first thing you'll notice when you walk in is the over-the-top friendliness of the folks behind the counter. They greeted us warmly, made small talk and welcomed us, just as they did with each customer who came in while we were there. Pleasantly surprised at the variety offered and grateful not to be stuck with a barbecue sandwich,I ordered the junkyard dog, all the way. It's a scrambled dog with slaw and barbecue pork on it. Their chili is really good. It's reminiscent of old-fashioned hotdog chili without beans. The cole slaw was really good as well, adding just a touch of sweetness to the dish. We usually have a great experience here. On today as we ordered our food. The cashier complained about having to come in on her day off. There was no ice in the fountain machine. The diet Dr Pepper was out. When we had to tell them that. They never changed it. They said do they have anything else to complain about and laughed. Hope to have better service next time. I've been to Hog Rock BBQ twice. The first time I only got ribs and they weren't seasoned so I didn't care for them much. The second time they tasted better, but they're very greasy. The ribs aren't that great but sufficient enough that if I really wanted ribs I'd likely go there. Their BBQ sauce was watery... BBQ sauce is supposed to be thick, but it had the consistency of watered down BBQ sauce. Their potato salad is not great either, but their coleslaw is actually pretty good. The biggest reason I gave them 1 star is because they gave me bread that was expired. I bought a meal from them yesterday and thought it was weird that they were giving me a loaf of bread to go with it ((this could've been perfectly normal, I've just never gotten an entire loaf of bread with a country restaurant before)). Well I got home and my boyfriend said I bet you they gave you all that bread because it's expired, and sure enough, the date on the loaf of bread was January 6th, 2022 and the date of my purchase was January 11th, 2022. Now, I'm in school to be a dietitian, and I also am ServSafe certified. You are NOT supposed to serve food that has expired or has passed the Best Buy date. Although some people eat bread passed the Best Buy date, it goes against guidelines to provide outdated food in restaurants. This made me wonder what other foods they cooked or handed out that was old. That also tells me that the restaurant manager is not doing their job by ensuring food gets checked every night or day to ensure old food is getting thrown out and not served to customers. read more

First visit to Hog Rock. I got the "big boy" plate and my buddy got the "old timer" plate. The pork was tasty, and the portions were good for the price. The place stayed busy the whole time we were there. service was pretty quick and everyone was friendly. The BBQ sauces were mustard based. They have a "mild" and a "hot" sauce. I tried both, tasty, but not spectacular. The Brunswick stew was probably the best thing I had. I also got the BBQ slaw, which was very mustardy, but overall good. The prices are hard to beat, but unless I am in the neighborhood I would not go out of the way for their BBQ. read more

I grew up in PC and have had all of the BBQ in town. Personally I do not think that any of it's bad. Basically it comes down to personal preference and your mood. 5 chipped sandwiches for 5 bucks is a great deal by me. The onion rings are ok, lacking onion really. I'm very disappointed. This used to be the best place around to get wings but now the prices have gone up and the service has gone down. They chat with each other while they take my call in order, then finish their conversation with eachother before coming to ring me up. The girl taking my payment stopped to go answer her phone in the middle of running my card. They had to repeat my order several times, and then I get home and part of it is missing...AGAIN. This is my 'go-to' BBQ restaurant. Not because of the BBQ... But because if you order right, you can get a lot for cheap. Like the 5 for $5 BBQ sandwhiches. Not the best tasting, but 5 BBQ sandwhiches for $5... In my opinion you just can't beat that. Also they have good wings for a reasonable price. I usually get the 25 wings for $12.99 I believe. Everywhere else around the area are higher on the price for not so many wings. The BBQ is good if you get a platter or plate of some sort and the chicken is tasteful. This is a good place to eat if you have no teeth. The "pulled" pork is a pile of amorphous mush that looks like a meat milkshake. If it had more texture, it would be like potted meat. A positive note is that the meat mush is inexpensive. There is no tomato based BBQ sauce--only a poor attempt at mustard based sauce. The fries are the frozen crinkle variety. I usually root for local businesses, but in this case, somebody should call PETA because the lives of pigs are clearly not being valued. Why would somebody do this to perfectly good pork??? I really wanted to like this place. It's a local mom and pop BBQ, that has a very nice size menu. The problem for me was pretty much everything. First of all, if you like mustard based sauces, this may be your place. That's a Carolina thing to me however and there was no choice of a tomato based sauce to be had. Even the Brunswick stew had that mustard based sauce in it which gave it an odd taste. The pork had a weird mouth feel as it was (I think) par-boiled and then smoked. It essentially tasted like boiled meat with a slight smoky taste. The fries were very bland and the coleslaw was very heavy on the mayo. The best thing was the banana pudding which was Authentic, Granny made (as we call it), and very good. My biggest issue however, and this was probably a fluke, was that we had to wait 25 minutes for our food because they simply forgot about our order. Visiting from California, decided to try something local instead of a chain. Can't say we were sorry with our decision! Tried one of their reasonably priced daily specials, a bbq sandwich and fries. It was delicious! Moist, tender meat, a soft bun, and some slaw and pickles for tang. Loved it! Only possible complaint was the tables were all a little sticky, but we did hit them right at lunch rush time and they were hopping, so can't say it's always like that, they might have just not been caught up yet.
