Gave it one more shot. It's gone to hell now. The bbq cook guy prepares food (sandwiches, plates) with his bare ungloved hands. He wipes his hands on his apron. He went to the bathroom and there is no way he washed his hands. The female counter workers are odd. One will stare at you when you walk up to the counter with a kind of "what the hell do you want" look and there is no greeting. Flies are a huge problem in this place. I went here for the first time this past week, after living in the area for almost 14 years. Still trying to find the perfect barbecue place here. I ordered the chipped pork (they only have pork, not beef, which I found a little odd; I would have preferred beef, but oh well) and it was pretty good. Ordered the Brunswick Stew for my husband and he seemed to like it. I asked about baby back ribs, as I didn't see them on the menu. I was told they didn't have them (bummer), but that they had St. Louis style ribs, and had I ever had those? I said "no, I hadn't." So the owner(?)/person in charge gave me two to take home and try! I really appreciated that. (They were decent for non-baby back ribs.) So, food was good, service was outstanding, and personally, as long as the place is clean, which it seemed to be, I like the charm of the 70s-style interior. My family is from Columbus. military generations. We live in Atlanta now. my mom makes an effort to come back to Columbus JUST for Macon Rd BBQ. 2 hour trip. However I was in Columbus today for work and figured I'd stop and get some BBQ to take back to her! she's was thrilled. I've personally only been there IN PERSON a handful of times. but I've eaten it my whole life. always good BBQ. the staff wasnt friendly however. at ALL. and that's disheartening. This is a landmark spot. I was in to get take out to bring back to Atlanta and I felt very unwelcome. I'm not sure why. I was courteous , polite, obviously blue collar and I tipped 20% on take out. but no one even said hello. (it was NOT busy whatsoever at this time of day) just a woman with a stern face saying 'what do you want?' I ordered my moms request and then added in a simple sandwhich for myself. I asked if it came with sides and she simply said 'no'. she didn't offer a suggestion on what to order that might come with sides. I don't know who she is. if she's an owner or not. but at that point i felt like an inconvenience and I just wanted to get my basic order and leave. i regret tipping 20%. read more

I went today and the older man and the young man working there talked to me as if it was 1956 after I asked if they give veterans and retirees a military discount and told me no and the young man said that the reason was because of President Biden and that really offended me because I'm a 24 year Retirees and served my country for his freedom when he was still in shxx pampers with honor and dignity for the President and all appointed over me then they both said when Trump becomes President again they will give a discount and that he is going to change things. Recommended by friends, so stopped by on my first visit to Columbus. I guess I didn't realize that this is pig only. I planned to order brisket. Oops. Columbus is not one of those places that you happen upon accidentally. It is far enough off the beaten path of I-85 that you have to have some good and logical reason to end up there or you're passing through before enrolling at Auburn. Places like that are usually the kind of places that have the most wonderful barbeque shacks that you can find. Make no mistake, Macon Road barbeque is a shack. There are no cute dancing pigs on the menu. Hell, there's no menu, just a couple of those signs with press on plastic letters on the wall. The tables are bare and you grab your own Coke out of the cooler. What Macon Road is is one great kick ass small town barbeque shack. They serve chicken, ribs and a boneless pork shoulder that they cook slowly in a chimney style smoker that you first get a whiff of a quarter mile or so down the road. The pork is wonderfully smoky and fragrant served with a spicy sauce with a hint of mustard. The house made Georgia style Brunswick Stew (sweet tomato based with remnants of smoked pork, potatoes and corn) is so good that you'll seriously consider slapping your mom over the last spoonful. If they ever change the ten commandments to add an 11th, I absolutely believe that the 11th should be, "Thou Shalt Eat at Macon Road Barbeque Once In Your Life" It is well worth a trip off of the beaten path. read more

Macon Road is a great example of what barbecue should be - focused, simple, and regional. Focused: you're probably going to get the brisket, either chopped or sliced. Not that 'sliced' is a particularly accurate way of describing it - 'minced' and 'chopped' might be more accurate, as the latter is sort of like burnt ends, except it's not just the ends. Simple: If you order any other protein, it's on you. Regional: It doesn't take long to get your 'cue, and since it's hard to mess up barbecue that's cut this thinly, it's pretty good. Sure, if you cut that brisket in a manner that's consistent with the barbecue of other states, you might find it a little dry, but in this case, it's not bad, and there's always plenty of that fine mustard-based sauce to help things along if you need it. PLUS, there's a spicy version of it available on request, because it's kept warm. The spice is completely from black pepper, and there's a lot of it, but it's a nice change of pace. The Brunswick stew owed quite a bit of thickening to potatoes, and along with the corn is was thick and hearty for the small serving I received. The fries, on the other hand, were fresh cut and surprisingly crispy, not something I was expecting to receive, nor something I saw elsewhere as I continued to eat my way around the city. As soon as we got off the plane we made a beeline for Macon Road, and I don't regret the choice. This is a big barbecue city, and Macon Road is at least a very good example of the stuff, if not among the best. read more

Having had BBQ across the US, perhaps my expectations were too high. But the truth is, I just didn't enjoy this. I got the 'sliced' pork, fries, and the Brunswick. The Brunswick was good, by far the best thing and if it has been all I had I'd probably give this place 3 stars on the food. The fries were average. The pork however had this really gross vinegars mustard thrown all over it, but it isn't seem like it was cooked in it. Maybe I would have liked it if they had the sauce on the side. And if a friend tells me I messed up by not telling them to not put it on, I'd maybe even go back (skip the fries and just order two side of Brunswick). The service was great and friendly though and the food was affordable and properly portion, which bumps this place from 2 to 3 stars. I'm sure others will like this more than I did. Was talking to my wife about my travels and the best Q I've eaten and Macon has to be it. From their stew to their brisket to their ribs it was simplicity at its finest & the flavors were through the roof fantastic. Don't let their old building and dated interior fool you, because it's not about the looks here, they're all about the food & flavor. With all the rich aeromatic smoke filling the local tree tops, you'll easily find your way here. I came back on four different occasions and it was the same every time. My favorite is their Brunswick Stew & minced/sliced brisket. I wish we had a location like this in California. I was in town on business on 9/23/10, and read the Yelp review on Macon Rd BBQ. Looked good, so I tried it out. Ratty looking place. Ordered mild wings plus a Half-Chicken plate. The waitress delivered the wings & some fries. Wings were okay. Waitress asked after 20 minutes if I had ordered anything else! They then brought a half chicken with 2 sides on the smallest plate possible. Chicken was covered with a nasty gravy looking sauce. Perhaps the specialty at this place is the chopped pork, because the chicken was extremely dry. They don't volunteer a knife (plastic fork), so it was hard to eat anyway. Part of the chicken was so dry it wasn't edible. One of the sides was brunswick stew - but it wasn't like any brunswick stew I had had anywhere else - just chopped pork in sauce - no shredded chicken, corn, lima beans. I found the owner and complained. Since you pay when you leave, he said there would be no charge, and he was sorry for my experience. read more
