We stopped in on the way to the beach. This is a local BBQ place. A few miles off the interstate. But not bad. The star of the show here is the service. Super cool, nice staff. The place has old school BBQ decor. The food was decent. I loved the bite sized pork. It was moist and yummy. I liked the sauce. My daughter got the chipped pork . It was dry even with sauce and not great., The slaw had the sauce on it. It was ok but very different. I really enjoyed the Brunswick stew. My boys got the nachos. They enjoyed them. I had lunch here with a longtime local, who said it was the only Q spot in town that he'd take a guest to. I ordered the nachos with chunked pork. They were outstanding! My friend ordered a pork plate with a side of the Brunswick stew. I tasted his stew and had to go buy a bowl of my own. It was the best Brunswick stew that I've ever had! They have fast and excellent customer service that quickly got through the line and to someone to take my order. This was my first time and without hesitation the person taking my order read through the menu and included recommendation as well as the prices. I felt I wasn't being pressured to order the most expensive item or to "make it a large". I ordered the bite size pork plate with pickles and coleslaw. Although I didn't like the coleslaw the pork was great and the BBQ sauce complimented it perfectly! Apparently the coleslaw is an acquired taste. The place also earned multiple 99s and 100s from The Georgia Department of Health. Which was a delight to see here in Columbus, GA. I'll be back and bring my family! Driving from Atlanta to Dothan we found this wonderful barbecue spot in Columbus Ga. it is worth the drive off I85 to visit. The store is clean, the service is great and the staff are friendly. They have a full menu that would meet anyone's expectations. They will chop the pork to your specifications and make the plate as you request. The Brunswick stew was spot on, the potato salad was very well seasoned. Baked beans were like my family used to make. Service was prompt and these folks exceeded expectations. We have driven by here many times but were finally able to stop in and try the BBQ. Quaint atmosphere. No nonsense. Super friendly. Simple but GREAT menu items. The BBQ was delicious and different from most other places in that it had a unique "pepper" flavor which I thoroughly enjoyed. The potato salad and baked beans were great as well. The Brunswick Stew had a nice flavor and was evenly portioned with BBQ and seasoning. Nothing was too overpowering. I need to thank Groupon again because without it I wouldn't have found this place without it either. I had the address and had Google map it out for me and I still missed it the first time through. There's a big sign up front but you have to go behind the building to see it. I'm glad I did because it was honestly some of the best barbecue I've had. The sauce is mustard based (which is something I love and can't get enough of.) My friends and I got here when the sign said OPEN and there was a a lady there with a ton of bread and a large tray. I ordered the Old Timer, spent the extra 90 cents to get the potato salad and got a medium drink. Total I spent on the meal after Groupon? 36 cents. I got the plate bite sized, it didn't matter because it tasted good enough no matter how it was cut. The slaw was also mustard based which was new to me but way better than any slaw I've had before. Way better. The potato salad, had a slight peppery kick to it, but was creamy and smooth. I don't know if it tasted homemade but it sure seemed like it and made me want more. The staff was incredibly friendly. You wouldn't know it from how they acted but they were about to close soon but they let us stay and hang out for as long as we wanted. Really good food! I like the chopped sandwich plate with slaw and sauce. Sometimes I get the bbq salad with ranch it's amazing. . Other times I'll get the bbq potato and this is the only place I've ever had either of these and it's amazing. It's more than you can eat but you want to keep eating because it's so good. Very southern and the staff is very friendly. I think it has potential. Had the chipped pork sandwich. The pork was good but overwhelmed my the mustard. I didn't care for the bread too much...it wasn't grilled and it wasn't soft. The Brunswick stew was not fit to eat. The "baked" beans had a nicely cooked bean but the flavor was a little off for my taste. The sweet tea was very good and not overly sweet. I came to Columbus for work with a colleague, and he mentioned seeing a local BBQ place just down the road from our meeting location. Noting it had good reviews (and the fact that I was jonesin' for some good 'que), we made our way to Smokey Pig. It was cute in a grungy sort of way, alright foodwise, and reasonably priced (two people ate for $17 with a lot of food left over). I'd recommend getting the bite-sized pork with the sauce on the side, read about why below. ---------- What. A. Quaint. Place. Like most BBQ places I've been, the walls were littered with memorabilia from the years Smokey Pig has had its doors open. It appeared that, despite the fact we were stopping in for a late lunch, regulars came and went steadily. Perhaps it was partly to do with the fact that they sell ribs on only a select few days of the week (Thursday and Friday? I can't recall). They do their pork three ways: chipped (chopped extra fine), bite-sized (loosely chopped), and sliced, and they serve it with white bread, pickles and coleslaw. I ordered my meal half chipped and half bite-sized. I would recommend bite-sized, as the chipped pork was dry and crunchy...the bite-sized was much better! Moist, flavorful, yum. The coleslaw was refreshing at first, because instead of the syrupy sweet, creamy slaw you see most often, it was very vinegary and tart. Additionally, the sauce that they slather over everything is mustard-based, so that is very tart as well. I would've enjoyed a little bit of contrast in the flavors, as halfway through my plate I started putting beans on my little sandwiches to cut the sharpness of the pickles/vinegary slaw/BBQ sauce combo. The presentation of the food was a little off-putting (I know BBQ has an art of it's own, but hear me out) because of the coleslaw and sauce, everything was an uncomfortable color of yellow. I know it's because of the mustard, but my knee-jerk reaction was that it looked like bile. Next time, I'd probably order it on the side for my sanity. Also ordered the fruit cup, which was like a marshmallow fruit salad (cherries, pineapple, coconut...yogurt...?); it was ok, but I think I've had better at church picnics. Overall, I'm glad I went and experienced this part of Columbus, but will probably leave it at that. If you don't like vinegar and expect a little bit more contrast in your BBQ flavors, you probably won't be satisfied, but it's a homespun place and has a lot of love from its town. read more

And that's when it started the first thing that came out of the cashiers mouth was they are tourist you take the order Then the food the ribs tasted like they were boiled then BBQ no flavor the chicken sandwich was slaped between two Pieces of bread its was dry no flavor it ranks up there with McDonalds chicken sandwich that's cost $1.00 the potato salad tasted like everything else crap. The only thing that was good was the baked beans. Today was the first time i've eaten from Smokey Pig in Columbus, GA and i was so disappointed. The potato salad tasted like bad store bought, the brunswick stew tasted like it was burnt, the loaded potato tasted like the potato was cooked to long or sitting out to long because it was so dry. My friend had chicken but instead of it being a piece of chicken on the bone it was cut up in little cubes (i've never seen cubed chicken from a barbecue place). We both work down the street but we will NEVER go back and eat from them. Very disappointed and a waste of money. read more

Was good. Not amazing, but decent. I wish they hadn't overly soaked my bbq plate with their very very vinegary bbq sauce. Meat was a bit dry. I noticed it was sitting unwrapped in a cool bbq pit oven behind the counter. The fruit salad was kind of a chopped dessert type, with what seemed to be marshmallow cream. The plate came with vinegar bbq sauce soaked cabbage slaw, pickles, and two pieces of pleasantly plain white bread. (They kind of helped soak up some of the vinegar sauce) read more

I went out for a pulled pork sandwich tonight in my hometown (of the past 7 years), Los Angeles. The bbq joint I go to now is run by a bunch of Carolina boys doing really nice work with a pit and a grill...But it ain't nothing like Smokey Pig. My meal was tasty, but it just made me jones for a chipped sandwich and some Lay's. I almost got on a plane. As a matter of fact, since my meal of a pulled pork sandwich with a side of collards and a tea costed $22, plus the 6.50 I paid to park, I probably could afford a plane ticket and come out ahead by just going to the best, Smokey's, the next time I get a craving. The perfect BBQ. To the Nay Sayers who are criticizing the "Cole" slaw, let it be known, that it is NOT cole slaw, it is BBQ Slaw, meant to eat ON your BBQ sandwich. BBQ is a sacred food in the South and Southwest. Every region has their idea of what animal to use (pork or, God forbid, beef) and how they like their sauces. Smokey Pig uses a mustard based sauce, it is what we like in our region. We have many local BBQ places in Columbus, GA. There is one chain that is horrible, but busy as it is frequented by Yankees and tourists due to its location. You know it's gonna be bad when the wall murals are the What? Grand Tetons.
