Update--I originally posted that I was pretty disappointed in the customer service. My dad went in and wanted some recommendations on a reel and the guy seemed pretty disinterested. I almost immediately received a message from the owner--wanting to know about my experience and promising to look into it. There are always going to be "off days" when an employee doesn't provide the best service but it is really encouraging to see an engaged owner that is setting the right tone. I'm definitely going back and hope that this turns into my favorite local tackle shop. read more

DON'T SHOP HERE IF YOU'RE NEW TO FISHING. Even though my first visit to this tackle shop was mostly a positive experience, my second and third visit were enough to make me never shop there again. Being new to fishing in this area, i was interested in learning about it. During my first visit, i was given some solid advice by one of the younger staff members. However, my second and third visit were the complete opposite. An older gentlemen working there asked me if I needed anything specific. I was simply there for some bait and wanted to learn more about fishing. His tone toward me was very condescending. Something I shrugged off until my third visit when his tone went from condescending to flat out patronizing. It was as if someone told him his customer service was awful, to which he would then make a point to be a better salesman this time around. It was simply unpleasant and unprofessional. I've always believed places like this were meant to encourage newcomers to fish. It is very unfortunate that the complete opposite was achieved by an employee of Hogan's Bait & Tackle. My advice, ask one of the younger employees for help. They seem to be less judgmental. read more

Hogan's Bait & Tackle - Local whoo - Sporting Goods Near Me - Dana Point, California

I was looking for some tackle to match an Okuma Cedros 10' two-piece surf rod and Lexa 300 to give as a gift to my dad for his 80th birthday. Problem was that I am in Phoenix, on a short timeline for mailing and wasn't be able to stop by the shop before heading to the island...I needed stuff drop shipped. The jig manufacturer's website listed a lot of SoCal dealers and I didn't have experience with any of them. I didn't know which store to contact, but I saw the 44 five star Yelp reviews for Hogan's and decided to give them a try. I was put in touch with Josh who helped dial in a mix of jigs, swimbaits, fluoro leader, etc. that would match the rod, reel and location (shore fishing from the backside of Catalina Island). I had done a fair amount of internet research on jig heads, colors, brands, etc. and found that Josh and I were very much on the same page when it came to tackle ideas. He confirmed my internet research knowledge with his real world experience. I could tell he knew exactly what I was trying to achieve with weights, sizes, colors, etc. He was very patient with a couple of phone calls back and forth to get the details correct... So, overall, as the previous reviews indicate, this was a great buying experience and I will be back to Hogan's when I need to restock. Two thumbs up! read more

It has been a while since the last time I was here to see Stephanie and Breck... only because I moved the boat to Newport Beach... and have been refitting our new boat in Pompano Beach, Florida for the last two months... Now that I am home... the work doesn't stop.. I need gear and I need to see someone knowledgeable in Eastcoast fishing techniques... something most So Cal anglers struggle with including myself....I had to come and see them... The store has dramatically changed.. it is now much larger and is stocked to the gills with everything you may need, covering a wide selection for any angler...any style, any technique... Im a tough critic... and I needed to get big game gear quick... fishing an area that most shops would not have a clue on what to do.... but Breck knew what to do and spoke the same language of big game fishing in the Caribbean and the coast of Venezuela... I would say... Breck has the most knowledge of fishing the kite and trolling dredges than anyone in the So Cal region.. Now for the best part... almost everything I needed was in stock.... This is why I love this place!!! Not to mention... everyone here is extremely nice and genuinely friendly...always a smile and can remember your name... even after many years... So as my cousin recently said on social media... To all owners and CEO's with boats and the means.... Go buy a boat or a bigger boat, hire crew, put a team together and go fishing!!! I have been here a lot past couple of weeks and have only received the best service. I bought a fishing rod and reel here two weeks ago. I noticed that my drag broke so I took it in today. Instead of making me buy a new reel or me paying them to fix it. They told me to come in and they'd check it out. They gave me a brand new reel and put my line on it all in 10 minutes. I got into ocean fishing a couple years ago. I live close so I popped in to Hogan's. I found that every person working there has a great attitude. They are all friendly and willing to walk around with you until you find what you need. The shop has everything including used consignment rods/reels/etc. The staff know what they are doing - they know what the fish are biting and they know what you need for the best chance to not just fish but catch. First came into Hogan's about 3 weeks ago and have probably been back about 4 times since then.Every time I go in I am always greeted with a hello and a friendly smile. Also, there always ready and eager to help you with any questions you have. Today I was trying on some of the deck boots for an upcoming trip and the gentleman working there (didn't get his name) went outside and brought a chair in so I could sit while trying on different sizes. After reading great reviews from this shop I decided to make the drive and check them out, cool place with lots of variety. I came in looking for items that I need for my local fishing (which they had) but the reason I'm giving this place a one star and never my business again. The reason? It was the the way I was profiled when I walked in. I was not greeted at all, but other non minority customers that walked in were greeted right away and approached by employees to see if they needed help, I ignored that and walked to the iron jigs rack and began to pick my selection, one of the young employees hovered near the reels which are next to the irons jigs and starred at me as if I was going to pocket some items. He kept an eye on me until I grabbed some items and walked to the counter, the entire time I was there, I was not approached by any of the two employees to see if I need help, instead I got looks as if I was a shoplifter. So I started fishing this year without any experience, a true new beginner. But I did my research into fishing by reading what's online and watch what's on Youtube. What's funny about this whole ordeal is that there is a place next door called "Bubba Kahuna's" which I've been going to for a long time (and even Yelped about) but never paid any attention to this gem of gold that sits right next door to it. Hogan's is absolutely awesome! This is truly a great find! I can honestly say first-hand that as a newbie fisherman that this place makes what can be considered a very overwhelming experience, into a digestible, informative experience. This is my third time coming here in the past month and a half. They are extremely professional and have a local welcome vibe feel to the place. One of the guy's that works there is named Mike. Consider yourself lucky if you run into him because he knows the 'ins' and 'outs' of every product they sell. There's also Stephanie, who knows quite a bit too but we didn't have a chance to speak with her as she was busy with another customer. Obviously, it's a sale based business and so he'll give you options and give his personal recommendations -if you ask. But what I find very attractive is that the workers there don't pressure you into buying anything. You know that uncomfortable and annoying feeling when you go into a car lot shopping for options from the car sales guy. Well forget about that here! Come stay as long as you like... Ask questions... Ask more questions... Very family friendly. Not very many reviews placed up here since I figure that fisherman might not be Yelpers or something... You'd be surprised how this business maintains a steady flow of returning and satisfied customers. My recommendation is to come in here and allow them to help you. You can help them by: 1. Telling them your experience level in fishing 2. Knowing what you want to catch. If you just want to catch fish, like me, tell them that and they'll let you know what types of seasonal fish are biting 3. Tell them whether you will be fishing off a pier, at a beach, or deep-sea fishing off a boat, or even hunting for lobster. The gear and bait you use play a vital role in helping to attract fish. True, at it's core fishing is about throwing a line with a hook and some bait and catching a fish but I contend you increase the mathematical probability of catching more fish or specific fish if you seek professional advice. THIS is what they specialize in. Lastly, if you're a newbie like me -someone who hasn't set foot in a tackle shop for an entire lifetime until last month. Try not to be overwhelmed either by the products they sell, the photos of anglers and 'ginormous' catches both locally and around the world. But be overwhelmed by the service. I am so happy I wondered into this fishing store. I ultimately wanted a new fishing rod and reel. I went into a place in Anaheim this morning to buy some hooks and maybe a rod and reel of the price was right. I wasn't greeted, wasn't asked if I needed anything, etc. I didn't buy anything because I had no help from the staff. I came into Hogans- what a world of difference. I was greeted professionally, asked if I need anything. The guy who helped me was patient with me and was overly helpful! I am an avid fisherman but I was out of my element going for larger game so I needed lots of guidance. I ended up buying hooks, an iron lure, reel and rod! Great tackle store in a great location. They have all the right gear you're looking for and are friendly and helpful. Stephanie even knew my name despite me only stopping by every couple months. You don't find that at the bigger tackle stores to the north or south. Big bonus is they carry lugworms which every fish in the harbor and surf eats. Showed up after a loong drive only to find that they were closed. I was fortunate to run into one of the proprietors who told me to come on in. She told me to take my time and was super sweet but I really didn't want to overstay my welcome so I got what I was there for and quickly eyeballed their selection on my way to the counter. Prices are VERY competitive and their selection of saltwater terminal tackle is excellent (That's what I was looking for) It's clear to me that the folks here really go out of their way to help out their customers and I will be back shortly to pick up some more gear when they're not getting ready to go grab lunch or something.
