IYKYK - Hogfish is awesome. I came with high expectations, especially since they bill themselves as the best hogfish (sandwich) in Key West. Arriving to the location isn't the best start, as you go through some Stock Island neighborhoods with the smell of rotting sargasso pervades your last mile. But the place is cool, laid back old school Key West. Our waitress was quick, but not too friendly. I asked about the two local beers and she quickly replied that she doesn't drink draft. Not helpful. My beer arrived warm - maybe that's what she wanted to share. Anyway, I asked for the best hogfish dish. She suggested the most expensive option which came on top of a crab cake. I bit. Hook, Line and sinker-- but I got the hook. It wasn't good. Overcooked, not light and fluffy like hogfish should be. IMHO, I was served another fish. Others at my table had a better experience. But like the arrival to Stock Island- the experience kind of stunk. Hopefully you have a better time! read more

This was our second time here - the last time was in 2014 and it took some time to remember the name of this place, but we asked a local and made it back! My parents got fried Hogfish and said their meal was delicious. I got a cheeseburger, which was fantastic. Huge portion sizes and grilled with a nice char on the outside. Came with fries, which were also really good. Our waitress was wonderful! She said she'd worked there 25 years and she had such a great personality. It was hot and they're an open air type place, so while there is shade, there isn't air conditioning but it's such a fun, island vibe that you won't care. Eclectic seafood restaurant on stock island which claims to be a local spot, although IMO is tourist prices. Everything we ate here was just ok, nothing I'd rush back for. Tried the coconut fish bites, which were a unique dish & a good serving as an app. Also got the lobster bisque (eh), and tuna nachos (decent, although the kitchen had run out of some of the toppings and discounted my dish). Just ordered beers cuz the restaurant was slammed and I didnt feel like waiting for a cocktail. Stopped by as was in the area. The place has a nice dive feel and it is quite comfortable. Seating is covered so either sun nor rain are going to get you. So amazing we went twice in one day!! What a freaking cool little place. Amazing "island" vibe, tons of outdoor and open air seating, and the food! The food! Just amazing. Staff was extremely friendly and service was super fast. Meals were served on simple trays, but who needs fancy when the food is so good? We had the hogfish & chips and the hogfish tacos for lunch...switched up fries for onion rings for dinner. The hogfish was so, so good! Fish was so flavorful and juicy...didn't even need any tartar sauce. This was a tough one to score. Went here twice. Had EXCELLENT service the first time, and pretty good service the 2nd time. But on the 2nd visit a young lady who worked there kept throwing out snide remarks to us. I'm not sure what we did to upset her, but she really didn't like us. We had a wonderful time at Hogfish. We actually stumbled across this bar by happenstance. We were on our way to a different restaurant and this one looked so much better that we decided to stop in. It was quite busy for a Monday afternoon so we knew it had to be good. The service was quick and very, very friendly. There was lots of seating to choose from some right on the dock next to the water. And it was actually quite cool in the shaded / fan area that they have near the water. I loved the bang bang shrimp. I got that as my entrée because it was lunch and I didn't want to eat something too heavy. My husband got the lobster tacos and my son got the fish platter. We all enjoyed our food thoroughly that there was not a crumb left over the fish platter was quite a bit of food 8/10, and the lobster tacos were quite filling as well. The bang bang shrimp isn't quite what I envisioned. I envisioned a little less breading when I ordered it, but nonetheless, they were still good and actually kind of unique compared to other shrimp dishes that I have tried. The sauce on them is quite good, there just wasn't enough sauce. Maybe just there needs to be a side of it on the plate for other people to dip into if it's going to stay an appetizer dish. But maybe that was their point to not hide the seafood with a bunch of sauce. 7/10 My husband wishes he would've gotten the hog fish dish instead as the lobster tasted like chewy cut up shrimp. 6/10 Sadly, we don't get lobster where we are from in Washington State so he was excited to have some lobster for a change. I've had this restaurant on my list of go to's for quite some time and we were finally able to visit the Keys and the Hogfish Grill. It's quite a ways off of the beaten path but close to where our finned friends meet their demise. Had the excellent conch chowder, lobster bisque, hogfish and chips and hogfish tacos. In spite of all the hype, we found both food and service to be average. The server took a long time to greet us and we never saw her again until she dropped off the bill. I guess that's the bare minimum, but it would have been nice to ask how our food was or if we wanted anything else. The atmosphere was funky, but kind of dirty looking and the smell from what I assume was rotting seagrass was kind of annoying. The burger was very good, but the fries were limp and soggy. The hogfish fish sandwich was pretty average and the server said it was fresh even though Hogfish is out of season. Fast and courteous service, island vibes, full bar, great food... I ordered grilled snapper and scallops, house rice and fresh veg. It was all perfect! This is the very first time, in Key West, that I can say the fish was exactly as it should be. Everyone here seems to think it must be either cooked to a level of rubber or they use so much oil (or butter) that it is slimy. Not here, they grilled it to the point of perfection that will have me back on my next visit. Now, also there were scallops, and again it was out of the park! The fresh veg, was just that, fresh and crisp and nothing fancy. I am not a rice guy, but I did eat more of the rice than intended...light, fluffy and just seasoned. It was a great compliment to the fish and scallops, not an untalented back-up dancer trying to steal the show...it played its part well and deserves recognition! It's been a long time since my last visit. I got a front row parking and sat at the bar. I had food in front of me within 5 mins of my arrival. I started with the lobster bisque. Best I've had in a while. Full of lobster, sherry, and flavor. I then ordered the grouper fingers. I got the rice and beans with the fingers. As you can tell from the pictures, it was a ton of food. Holy cow, was that some good food. The service was quick and very good. The food was fantastic. This place is hard to find if you don't have GPS. You will wonder where this place is. The places is steeped with So Florida decor familiar in KW eateries. The l Immediate seating at 11:30 on a Monday. The waitress took our drink orders as we sat. I had a Brirria burger for lunch. A generous portion of meat served with lettuce, tomato and a side of brirria saiice. The accompanying fries were light. The Key Lime pie was a little off. We discovered this place on our last night in Key West, FL and couldn't believe it had been so close to our hotel the whole time. What a great find to end our trip. We ordered takeout and the food was outstanding. The hogfish sandwich was easily one of the best we've had -- fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. The fish taco plate was just as delicious, and the key lime pie was absolutely amazing... the perfect sweet and tangy finish to the meal. Our only regret is that we didn't dine in. The restaurant looked lively and full of great energy during dinner, and we wish we had experienced the full atmosphere instead of taking the food back to our hotel. Traveling with kids. I told them I wasn't driving to Florida to have Macdonalds so we made a compromise. Hogfush bar and grill is situated at the docks.
