After we were seated, I told our waitress that I was gluten-free and that we had called ahead about the menu. Instead of letting us know right away that there was an issue, she went to speak with the manager, and we spent about 10 minutes looking over the menu and deciding what to order. When the manager finally came to our table, she told us they actually did not have any gluten-free options. I explained that we had specifically called ahead and were told the ramen was gluten-free with rice noodles. She clarified that only the plain rice noodles themselves were gluten-free--not the ramen or broth. That is very different from what we were told over the phone. I then asked whether I could order a poke bowl with white or brown rice. She said the rice was not gluten-free because it was prepared with sugar and vinegar. Since sugar and vinegar are typically gluten-free ingredients, I asked for clarification, but she simply repeated that she does not make any of the rice gluten-free and was unwilling to help identify anything on the menu that I could safely eat. I do appreciate that she refused to serve me something if she believed it wasn't safe. As someone with a gluten allergy, I'd much rather be told "no" than end up having an allergic reaction.
