The last several times we have ordered take out from here we always order the filet and they have not given us it. They switch it out for regular steak. which is cheaper then the filet. the only reason we come here is for the filet and it sucks ordering over $100 worth of food and not getting what you ordered. this has happened at least 5 times with our take out. read more

We came here yesterday at 4:30pm for a birthday dinner. There was a huge line of people just waiting to come inside and dine here! I have never seen anything like it. I heard it was popular, but wow! The inside is gorgeous. There are so many Hibachi tables and also regular tables near the sushi bar. We sat at the hibachi table. Our waitress was exceptional and catered to all of our needs. I got a cosmopolitan to drink, and it was so fruity. My kind of drink for sure! they started us off with mushroom soup and a salad with a ginger dressing. The enjoyed both the soup and the salad. I usually don't like ginger, but the ginger dressing was so good! A lot different from other ginger dressings. I ordered the filet mignon at the hibachi table. Our chef John was amazing. Very entertaining and personable. He even gave me some shrimp, and it was delicious! I should have ordered the combo of filet and shrimp. I loved the fried rice, and my filet was cooked to perfection! They do not skimp on their portions here! I had enough to take home for two more meals! The grilled vegetables were amazing too with the zucchini being the biggest surprise. Ethan and I raved about how good they were. The brought out a fried ice cream plate for our birthday girl Kim. Hokkaido had always been a go to of mine. The sushi is fresh, and the sushi sashimi combination is a great deal and quality. Mackerel is always a good test on the quality of the sushi, and theirs doesn't disappoint. The service is great, and the tables are just far apart that you don't hear the other conversations happening all around you. It's a simple decor, but the atmosphere is good. read more

Passing through from Carolina's vacation from Louisiana and decided to try this place having read decent reviews. Atmosphere is nice and restaurant appears clean. Sat at hibachi grill promptly. Waiter/server, Shelby, was very nice. Chef was kind and prepared meal quickly. Salad was cold, crisp w/ great tasting ginger dressing. Mgr came by to ask how all was going twd beginning of food prep, which was nice. Fried rice was tasty, however, very small amt of egg prepared in it. Filet steak smelled and tasted somewhat strong however I noted it to be red in color when being seared... I decided to eat anyway thinking it was just d/t being med cooked as ordered. Experienced stomach upset soon afterwards. My adult dgtr also c/o GI upset after her filet steak/ckn hibachi meal cooked well done. Ugh!! So wanted to write an excellent review. read more

Hi! I am a Professional Softball player visiting Tuscaloosa for a tournament. I play professionally in Japan. When I saw the name Hokkaido I was super excited. Hokkaido has THE BEST sushi in the WORLD! This was not Hokkaido quality lol. The quality of fish was definitely lacking but probably the best you will find in Alabama. The fried sushi was good! The crunch on the Hokkaido Special was great. The cut was inconsistent and the flavor was bland unless you had some soy sauce and ginger. I had the fried pork dumplings. I could tell they went from frozen into the deep fryer because of the hot water I got when I bit into it. The flavor was mediocre, but edible. The edamame was great. The salmon nigiri was the best thing I had on the menu although the rice had too much water in it and was mushy. Also the fish to rice ratio was not good in the nigiri. The wasabi wasn't fresh and didn't have that kick to it. Almost like having an old avocado. The service was GREAT! I sat at the bar and Annie was a gem. She was attentive and so cute. Probably a nice date night if you know nothing about sushi and love fried rolls with cream cheese, or you're in high school. Glad to be leaving tomorrow back to Japan for real food art. read more

We had a great meal. We were seated at the hibachi table within minutes of arrival. The server promptly took our drink order and returned for put food order. Four of us ordered chicken and one had scallops. All of the food was cooked well and was tasty. However our chef was pretty much silent. He talked a little, made the tiny volcano, spun an egg and caught it in his hat and that was it. It was the most boring hibachi experience I've watched. The people beside us thought the same thing. So if you are going for the fun/show of hibachi this was not it. If you're going for the food and atmosphere, sit on the other side and have an amazing meal . read more

The food was great the service and management were awful! We arrived at 5:30 and told 20 minute wait, that turned into closer to an hour. We were then seated and our orders were taken. The table in the same room had just left when we sat down. We were served our soup and salad and our drinks. We were finishing those when the other table was filled with customers. They were served their soup and salads and then the chef came out to prepare the meal but he had the new table not us. They were served their food ate it and left before our chef arrived it is now about 7:15. I had gone out to use the restroom and our waitress was just standing texting on her phone. I complained about the wait and she said she went to check on it but never came and told us anything. After a while I went out to check again and again she is just texting in her phone. She never came to check on us. I asked to speak to someone in charge and the owner I guess came in and offered everyone their drinks for free except for me because I had wine. Everyone else had tea or soft drinks. These drinks cost the restaurant about a nickel each. I was given three dollars off my glass of wine. Terrible compensation and we told her we were not happy. Great food and great service always!! Their ginger salad dressing is heavenly. The wait staff is always very kind as well.

We usually dine in but this time we ordered online. The process was easy and the staff super helpful when we arrived. We had the steak and shrimp, roll tide roll, coconut shrimp, and spring rolls. It was ready when we arrived and everything was delicious! It's a little pricey but the food is really good! We will keep going back! read more

Have you ever had a place you wanted not to like. I dunno what it is... but something just doesn't speak to me. I can't find anything to hate. ‍ ( Except a manager from the first visit. My son accidentally knocked soy sauce off the table and it broke. And dude made a HUGE deal out of it. So much so that he made my son cry and want to leave. Even tho before it hit the floor my son was apologizing and immediately wanted to help clean it up. Mind you, he was 7. We asked for paper towels and cleaned it up ourselves but the manager made a scene... as if he had pitched it across the room. I've not seen him again, hopefully they punted his ass to the curb!) I've tried sushi. Bento lunch box. And a few appetizers. My favorite is their soup. It's basically broth.... but I could literally live on it. Have been going to Hokkaido for years since they were still at the old location before the tornado. I've never had a bad meal in all of my trips. I went for lunch and got the Makki lunch which is a ginger salad along with 4 pieces of salmon roll, cucumber roll, and California roll. It was prepared quickly and brought to me. I did have to ask the waiter to bring me my salad which he said he had forgotten about. This is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. The sushi tasted fresh and had a great flavor. read more

Waited about 20 minutes for a regular table because we thought we'd be in and out quicker. Had a long day driving and we were starving. Finally sat down, took awhile for our waitress to take our order. She brought out our soup and salad, and then immediately brought our or appetizers (steamed dumplings) and our meals. She never brought out the appetizer shrimp that are supposed to come with the entrees, but we never said anything because we just wanted to finish and leave. Whether they cook in front or not, it's the same price. As for the food... soup, salad and dumplings were ok. We had steak and shrimp and a chicken and shrimp. it is Friday night so they are busy. we waited 15 mins to sit at the bar that had not been bused. we had to ask the cashier to take our order as the bartender was too busy being friendly with the guys next to us and answering the phone for to go orders. what is more important to go orders or the people in front of you? As we sat here 2 people got up and left as they were never acknowledged after 20 mins of being seated. One of the better if not the best in Alabama that I have been to in years. My last trip was with a party of 10. They wait staff was quick and responsive to us all and the 3 children with us. All the meals were great the steaks cooked correctly and the seafood as well. The cook/chef was engaging, funny and entertaining throughout the meal. The owner of the venue came by on multiple occasions to check in and make sure all was well. The sushi was great along with the soup and ginger salad. My daughter eat everything she ordered and was very happy throughout the evening. They do a great Job, need to get there early for the hibachi side they do full up quick.
