Another return to one of my favorite places in Tuscaloosa. As usual, the service was good, the place was clean, and the food was awesome! I got my usual bowl, tonkotsu, but did try a new appetizer. The steamed buns were amazing! The dough had a great texture and was slightly sweet, and it paired wonderfully with the juicy pork mixture on the inside. I visited Fuku Ramen while in Tuscaloosa visiting my son at the university. We started with the Angry Edamame, which was perfectly spicy and absolutely delicious--my son is still talking about how much he loved them. He had the spicy miso ramen, which he thoroughly enjoyed. We also shared the pork gyoza, which were flavorful crispy. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive, but the atmosphere is just okay--nothing too remarkable. The reviews for this place made me have high expectations for the food but I have to say I was not impressed. Once we entered the restaurant the server or hostess who was across the room yelled " Two?!?!" and then pointed us to a table??? That was the tone of the service the entire time. Rushed! That was enough to make me want to get up and leave but I wanted to see if the ramen as good as my favorite place in West Palm Beach, it was not. The best thing about the meal were the dumplings. The black garlic was raved about in most of the reviews but mine fell flat for some reason. Maybe needed some salt?? The pork belly that I added was okay but not the best I ever had either! One of the best ramen places I have been to in Alabama. Definitely will return. Get that pork bun and I bet any ramen dish won't be bad. I felt so welcomed as soon as we walked in. The lady seating us was super kind and helped us with getting a table that would be good for our special needs child to stay in his wheel chair. All throughout the meal we had great on point service by multiple members of the service staff. The food - I had the pork bun and spicy miso ramen. Wow, I am very excited to share my experience at this restaurant. This Japanese restaurant isn't your typical hibachi style grill or run-of-the-mill sushi bar. instead this little gem specializes in serving authentic ramen bowls. There are some other entrees, but the ramen bowls are the main attraction. They offer ten different ramen bowls, and the menu is very detailed in describing the ingredients in each. They all sounded appealing to me. I ordered the Spicy Miso Bowl because I love the unique flavor of miso (fermented soy bean). I thought the broth was amazing. It was rich and creamy and had the perfect blend of saltiness and spiciness. The ingredients in this bowl include pork belly, corn, cabbage, bamboo shoots, hard boiled egg, and of course ramen noodles. The ingredients were fresh and tasty and a wonderful combination. This bowl was a home run! David L ordered the Kaisen Ramen. It featured a combination of seafood, and looked as appealing as mine. David said the broth was rich and delicious. We ordered two appetizers. The Pork Gyoza and the Tori Karaage. The gyoza were pretty typical dumplings, and they were good, but didn't wow me. The Tori Karaage did wow. Described as "Bite sized Japanese fried Chicken" I thought it was spectacular. The chicken pieces were battered and fried. The batter was different, and I really like the texture and flavor. The chicken was piping hot and came with a soy sauce dipping sauce. This dish was new to me, but will become a favorite. The service was very good on our visit. read more

I think this is one of the most CONSISTENT restaurants in all of Tuscaloosa. I have been here numerous times and have never been disappointed by the food or service. I have dined in, and ordered for pick up, multiple times and have yet to have a negative experience. While this annual pilgrimage to Tuscaloosa had a disappointing end, the beginning was memorable thanks to fellow Yelper, Paul C. It was our annual trek to the Coleman Coliseum to watch my Tigers take on the Tide. Paul suggested Fuku Ramen for an early dinner before the 6pm tip-off. Located in one the most vibrant sections of shops off McFarland Boulevard, this little gem is hidden in a back section of this outdoor mall. Parking is plentiful if you don't mind walking, but traffic can be a bit of a bear at peak times. Keep in mind they close between 3 and 4:30 on most days. There's no outdoor seating, but the interior is gorgeous. It's hard to describe, but it has a tropical contemporary feel with comfortable boots and tables. Every table had a pair of black chopsticks on a white napkin. There was a lot of "brown" with an inviting atmosphere. There's a small bar with a tv, but nothing loud or distracting so a quiet romantic meal could be enjoyed. When we arrived on a weekday afternoon, it was rather empty, but I could see this place packed on a weekend and hence get pretty boisterous. Ramen is a catch all term for a noodle soup. While the popular packet instant Ramen, enjoyed by college students around the world, comes with flavoring packets of Chicken, Shrimp, Beef, etc, traditional Ramen has just as many variations. With roots from Japan, Ramen is basically made with 2 main ingredients: wheat noodles and a broth. Everything else is just dressing for your palate. There are thousands of Ramen shops, restaurants and food stalls in Japan that serve just as many different types. It is a very versatile dish and if made at home, you can add whatever makes your heart sing. I don't claim to be an expert on Ramen, but I am an expert at eating it! The broth is traditionally a pork flavored broth made by boiling pork bones for hours. Other flavors as you can imagine are chicken, beef, seafood or even just vegetable broth. I would behoove you to take a few minutes to study the different descriptions of each dish where you will discover different "additions" with different broths. As their name implies, Ramen soup bowls are the hero of their menu, but Fuku also offers rice dishes, as any good asian restaurant would. All the more reason to return here to try some of these next time. The descriptions sound delicious and for the adventurous, there's the Unagi Don (D5) made with grilled eel! There's only one udon noodle dish, but there's a host of appetizers that could be the only reason you dine here... although that would be a travesty to ignore the rest of the menu. After 3 inquiring nagging visits by our servers to our table, Paul C and I finally decided on the popular Pork Gyoza (S8) and Tori Karaage (S10). Presentation was gorgeous. The pork dumplings were charred and blackened just right if you're into that sort of thing. The filling was flavorful and accompanying spicy soy sauce was spot on. The Tori Karaage can simple be described as fried chicken nuggets. The batter was fantastic. Just the right amount of saltiness and pepper sealing pieces of dark meat, fried to perfection. Paul C opted for the Spicy Miso Ramen (R4) while I requested the Kaisen Ramen (R6). The spicy miso is made in the traditional pork broth with pork chashu, corn, cabbage, bamboo shoot, then garnished with scallions, red ginger and of course the half boiled egg. I could tell Paul's dish had a little kick to it because his ramen kept making his nose run. My seafood ramen was also a pork broth with at least 3 Yuge shrimp, some scallops, some clams (still on the shell - nice touch), cabbage, corn, then garnished with scallions and my half boiled egg. The broth was dark and tasted like it had been simmering for days. Yom Yom Yom Yom! The wheat noodles were a perfect consistency, not too hard and not too soft. Making the perfect ramen is an art and adding the hot boiling broth to the semi cooked noodles at just the right time, must be served and enjoyed immediately or you're just missing out. In other words, you have a narrow window... like McDonald's fries. My bowl was perfection except for the corn. I have nothing against corn, but if given the the choice, I would leave it out to make more room for another half of the soft boiled egg. Service was outstanding. We were greeted immediately upon entering and shown a booth. One of our servers arrived almost instantaneously and took our drink orders. I keep mentioning servers because it seemed every time a different person arrived tableside. Or maybe it was because they were masked and I was just paying more attention to my delectable meal. Our food arrived in a timely manner and overall, I just had a great time. Great call on choosing Fuku Ramen, Paul C! Now if only they would build one in Birmingham! read more
