Yum! This was a fabulous treat on a hot summer evening. I got the Hawaiian combo flavor (I can't remember the name, nor do I know what the fruit flavors were) and it was excellent! The size is very large, as they mound up the ice way over the cone, so you may consider getting a smaller size. One cute touch were the picnic tables with holes cut out to fit the cones! I loved their shave ice! I've been waiting to have some good shave ice since I was back in New Orleans or Hawaii. Glad that time finally came! :D The consistency is just like snow and melts in your mouth. I love all the different flavor combos as well as the classic flavors you would expect to see at a shave ice stand, they aren't overly sweet either. The li hing mui or condensed milk on top was super yummy! It's right near the college so a hang out spot around campus, plenty of parking as well as seating and I like all the string lights hanging around, super cute! Also, another thing I thought was neat that I have yet to see at a Shave Ice place, was the cool cut outs in the table so you can set your shave ice cup down. As far as shave ice on the Mainland, this is pretty great. I came here with my kids so much last summer that my husband said I had overspent any reasonable shave ice budget (which we didn't have anyway) and he put an end to the merriment. I've only dared to go twice so far this year, but it has been great both times. I usually get vanilla ice cream on the bottom, a few flavors of syrup, and a double snow cap (sweetened condensed milk). It's always delicious. read more

Shave ice is an art form, and the folks down at Hokulia are truly making cold, delicious little works of art. Actually, these puppies are anything BUT little. $2.75 gets you the smallest size- which is roughly the size of a toddler's head. I can't imagine wanting to eat a bigger one, but perhaps great for sharing. Especially since you can choose multiple flavors. You also have the option of ice cream or sweetened condensed milk, and about a million flavors, many of which I have never seen elsewhere. Try the cinnamon! I have had plenty of shave ice, but the texture of the ice here is UNREAL. You can't call it ice. It's like little baby penguins in Antarctica took freshly fallen snow into an igloo and put it in a magical machine and out came Hokulia's shave ice. And who doesn't love baby penguins? read more

The best Shave Ice around! We found this place down in Provo and ever since have had a hard time finding any kind of shave ice that compares. Finally, there are locations closer to our house in Riverton and Sandy. My kids can spot them a mile away and we love going there. The coconut and macadamia nut ice cream are our favorite add-ins but we also love the white cap (sweetened condensed milk). While there isn't a kid size on the menu, they do have one if you just ask. The short board (the smallest on the menu for $3) is plenty big and we could definitely have shared with the kids although they love choosing their own flavors. Definitely worth the drive to find one if you want a cold treat on a hot day (just hope the line isn't too long!). read more

The original Hokulia location and the best shave ice in town. No matter what flavors you get, you absolutely need to get ice cream in the middle. The snow cap (condensed milk on top) is okay, but that coconut ice cream is to die for! My favorite flavors are tiger's blood and blue raspberry, but if you need recommendations (there are so many options!) just ask the people working the booth and they will give help you figure out exactly what you want. I am from Hawaii and worked at a well-known shaved ice place for almost 4 years. On the islands we were considered the best. Now that I have moved to Provo, I've passed this place a few times and didn't really notice it until a friend took me to try it out. It was a bright sunny afternoon and, I'll be honest, I was a little skeptical because, let's be honest, finding a good authentic shaved ice is hard to find on the mainland. I don't remember what flavors I got but this is by far the BEST shaved ice that I have tried that comes close to the real thing back home, and I know why. They had the same shaved ice machines as we did back on the islands and the flavors they buy are the same ones my boss would buy and make himslef. If you are looking for authentic shaved ice, not the chunky icy crap, HOKULIA IS THE PLACE TO GO!!! If you don't know what to get ask the cashiers what they suggest. I love real Hawaiian shaved ice. Hokulia is the real deal, in fact it is the best in the world. These great ladies have the ice down and the flavors are mostly from Hawaii. Perfect syrups with the best flavors, served by very nice people. I know the best spots on 3 of the Islands and my favorite is in Maui in Lahaina (Ululani's). I'm thoroughly unimpressed with the service and speed of the place. I came having been told it's the best shaved ice in Provo. There were 6 people in the snow shack, none of which seemed to have any urgency, and we sat in the sun waiting for 35 minutes for two snow cones. When we arrived there were NO people in front of us and 20 people waiting without snow cones on the benches. From what I can gather they are putting out 1 snow cone from 6 people every 4-5 minutes. Really unimpressed and disappointed - not to mention the new person training almost charged me $15 for two snow cones because she double entered our order. It's a mixture of different colada flavors. And you can get a kid's size for $2--which is perfect for our 3 kids that insist on having their own. One word - Awesome! I have been searching for a true Hawaiian-style shaved ice ever since I came back from the North Shore in January, and finally found it here. I would recommend getting the 'snow cap' option, which is basically adding sweetened and condensed milk to an already amazing shaved ice, making it even better. Definitely worth the extra $.50. It is a little more expensive than your average snow shack, but a short board (there version of the small) is larger than any other snow cone I've ever had in the states, and you can easily share that with someone. Tip: They only accept cash or check. Personally, I haven't ever liked shaved ice. Or slushies, or icees--any ice-based frozen treats of the like. But Hokulia changed my mind today. I have been driving by this place for a few years and have never been drawn in, until one of my friends told me that I NEEDED to go--how right they were! This place is AMAZING. The ice is so fluffy and good, unlike anything I have ever had before. They have at least 40 flavors, and you can get multiple with each order. The small ($2.75) is HUGE--my husband and I shared it--and we got mango and cake batter with ice cream (free when you show that you checked-in). Both were great, but the mango was fantastic. We loved it so much that we got back in line and bought another :) This time, we got mango, passionfruit, and cherry with the condensed milk. All of the flavors were great! I would say that it really depends on the flavors that you get and whether they work with the condensed milk. In this case, we could have done without. Don't forget to use their punch card--might as well get something back because you'll be frequenting the place once you try it! Also, be sure to check in for a free cap (sweetened condensed milk) or ice cream scoop. The ice cream was nice, but the vanilla flavor sometimes overran the flavors of the shaved ice. Also, like I said before, it really depends on what flavors you get and whether or not they go with sweetened condensed milk. What are you waiting for?! Go now, today! We usually have a good experience here but tonight we went home empty-handed because their card reader would not read our card. Apparently my 1 year old debit card (which had plenty of money on it) was too "used" to be read. The girl said "sorry" and that was that. She also said no free topping with check in which is misleading because a little coupon pops up on yelp when you check in that says "free ice cream topping". I am very disappointed and will not be going back. As a tip-bring cash or multiple cards. Bad service. read more
